New Haven's housing is old and stacked: nearly 40% of the city's homes were built before 1940, and two-to-four-unit wood-frame buildings are the most common form after single-family houses. New Haven splits its curb between two bodies: the Parking Authority runs garages and lots, while on-street meters and parking rules belong to the city's Department of Transportation, Traffic & Parking (TTP). Meter enforcement runs Monday through Saturday until 9 p.m., so a moving truck that simply takes a metered space is a ticket risk on most days.

Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

Locally, the practical cost drivers in New Haven are access and volume. A third-floor apartment with no elevator takes longer than a ground-floor unit with a driveway at the door. A reserved, legal curb position shortens every carry; a truck forced a block away lengthens all of them. Packing level, furniture disassembly and any disposal or storage stage change the total as well. For long-distance shipments, the agreed price holds while the shipment and service scope stay as agreed; changes to either reopen the price. City fees — meter-bag rental or bulky-waste charges — are separate from the moving estimate.

The review starts with your two addresses, dates and inventory. We recommend the right level of estimate for the work — a detailed list for a straightforward apartment, a closer review for a full house, a business or specialist items. Before moving day we confirm the scope in writing: what is packed by whom, the access plan at both ends, the curb arrangement and the timing windows.

Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

Winter is the season that can cancel a New Haven moving day. The city may declare snow parking bans by zone: downtown (Zone A) bans parking on both sides, posted snow-emergency routes (Zone B) close, and in residential areas (Zone C) parking is allowed on the even side only. Violations during a ban can be ticketed and towed, so a truck has no legal curb at all while a ban runs. In the final week: confirm the meter bags are in place or the application is accepted, confirm elevator and access windows at both buildings, finish packing except daily essentials, and set aside documents, medications and chargers that travel with you. If snow is forecast, check the city's snow line — (203) 946-7669 — the evening before and again in the morning for a ban declaration.

Walk the route the crew will take — from the truck position to the entrance and up to the room — and remove what blocks it: cars from the driveway, mats and bikes from the porch, snow and ice from the steps. New Haven requires sidewalks to be cleared within 24 hours after a storm ends, so agree with the landlord who handles that at both addresses.

Anything you are not taking needs a plan before the truck arrives: the city collects bulky items by appointment only, scheduled in person at 34 Middletown Avenue, so a curb pile on moving day is not an option. If disposal belongs in the moving scope, raise it during the estimate rather than on the day.
