Albany's signature housing is the 19th-century brick rowhouse: a raised stoop, a narrow front hall, staircases with tight turns, and rooms stacked over three or four floors. If the truck needs street space, Albany's instrument is the Emergency No Parking Sign, issued by the Albany Police Department's Traffic Engineering Division to residents and businesses reserving on-street spaces when off-street loading is not large enough. You apply by phone at (518) 434-5791 — an online portal is under construction — and requests must be submitted at least four business days before the first day the space is needed.

Fees are published: $25 for one to three non-metered spaces, $50 for four to nine, $100 for ten or more, plus $15 per day for requests of three days or longer. If the spaces are metered, the Albany Parking Authority bills those fees separately once the request is approved. Approval is discretionary — the police can deny or modify any request — and the signs are installed after approval. Tell them whether your truck has a ramp or a lift; both need more space. Two cautions. A residential parking permit for a household car is a separate City Clerk program and does nothing for a moving truck. And during a declared snow emergency, normal parking rules are suspended citywide and temporary signs give way to the emergency side-of-street rules — winter dates need a storm backup plan, covered below.

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

Locally, the practical cost drivers in Albany are access and volume. A third-floor rowhouse apartment up a narrow stair takes longer than a ground-floor unit with a driveway at the door. A legal, reserved curb position shortens every carry; a truck forced around the block on a one-way street lengthens all of them. Packing level, furniture disassembly and any disposal or storage stage change the total as well. Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Albany's winter is the one season that can rewrite a moving day. If snow is forecast, check the emergency status the evening before and again in the morning.

Walk the route the crew will take — from the truck position to the stoop and up to the room — and remove what blocks it: cars from the driveway, bikes from the hall, snow and ice from the steps. Albany property owners must clear abutting sidewalks within 24 hours after a storm ends, so agree with the landlord who handles that at both addresses.
