Rochester's signature rental is the double: two stacked units in a wood-frame house built before the war, reached by porch stairs and a narrow staircase with turns at the landing. A sofa that fits the room may not fit the stairs; measure the large pieces against the actual route, including porch steps and any low turns.

The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which City or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Rochester has no single moving-truck reservation system; the right instrument depends on the street. In metered areas — downtown and the Center City — the Bureau of Parking bags parking meters to reserve space: $20 per space per day, requested through an online form. The written Meter Bagging Policy requires at least 72 hours' notice and names construction sites, buses and oversized vehicles among approved uses; state that you are reserving for a moving truck when you apply, and confirm the request was approved — a request by itself is not an approval.

On unmetered residential streets there is nothing to reserve: any vehicle may stand up to 12 hours where parking is otherwise legal, which usually covers a same-day load. If the truck or a moving container must occupy the street or sidewalk longer, the Department of Environmental Services issues right-of-way permits for obstructions and barricades — $50 a day on the 2025 fee schedule. When the city declares a plowing-day restriction, alternate-side rules take effect across residential areas; a snow emergency clears Snow Emergency Routes; a parking emergency clears 65 posted narrow streets from curb to curb. A December-to-March date needs a storm backup plan, covered below. Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

Locally, the practical cost drivers in Rochester are access and volume. A third-floor double with no elevator takes longer than a ground-floor unit with a driveway at the door. A bagged meter space or a legal curb position shortens every carry; a truck forced a block away lengthens all of them. Packing level, furniture disassembly and any disposal or storage stage change the total as well. Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Rochester's winter is the one season that can rewrite a moving day. The area averages about 100 inches of snow a year on the 1991–2020 normals for the airport station, with December through March the core. In the final week: confirm the meter-bagging request or right-of-way permit is approved, confirm elevator and access windows at both buildings, finish packing except daily essentials, and set aside documents, medications and chargers that travel with you. If it is winter, check for declared plowing-day, snow-emergency or parking-emergency plans the evening before and again in the morning — announcements go out through local media.

Walk the route the crew will take — from the truck position to the entrance and up to the room — and remove what blocks it: cars from the driveway, mats and bikes from the porch, snow and ice from the steps. Agree with the landlord who handles clearing at both addresses before the crew arrives.

Anything you are not taking needs a plan before the truck arrives. Rochester collects bulk items — furniture, bedding and mattresses, large appliances — at the curb on your normal refuse day, so time the clear-out to the collection day or book the city's On Demand special pickup; the set-out rules prohibit material placed in front of anyone else's property.
