Syracuse's signature rental is the two-flat: a house divided into upper and lower apartments, with a front porch, a narrow staircase and often a second entrance at the back. The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which City or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

If the truck needs street space, Syracuse runs that through a right-of-way permit from the Central Permit Office. The permit types cover parking and other activity in the city right-of-way — roads, sidewalks and metered spaces — and the fee schedule effective April 1, 2025 prices street parking at $18 per day per parking space, one-day minimum, excluding Sundays and holidays. Fees are due at the time of application.

Apply through the Central Permit Office — online through the city's application portal or at One Park Place, 300 South State Street (entrance on East Onondaga Street), 315-448-4754. The city publishes no processing lead time, so submit as early as you can, confirm the permit was issued before moving day, and agree inside the household who owns that task. Keep a copy of the permit with the moving papers.

Two cautions. A permit reserves space; it does not override winter rules — signed blocks keep their odd/even restrictions, and a vehicle in the way of a plow can still be ticketed and towed. And where the property offers a driveway, lot or loading dock, use it: private loading beats a street permit, but get the property's instructions in writing. Packing is where most Syracuse moves are won or lost: pre-war apartments hold full lives in small rooms, and two-flat stairs punish loose, overpacked or unsealed boxes. Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

Locally, the practical cost drivers in Syracuse are access and volume. An upper-floor duplex apartment with a porch staircase takes longer than a ground-floor unit with a driveway at the door. A permitted, legal curb position shortens every carry; a truck forced around the corner lengthens all of them. Winter dates can add time for clearing and staging. Packing level, furniture disassembly and any disposal or storage stage change the total as well. Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Syracuse's winter is the season that can reshape a moving day. The city is among the snowiest in the country — about 127 inches a year on the 1991–2020 normals for the Hancock airport station, with November through March the core — and the city's response touches movers directly. Signed blocks carry odd/even parking restrictions; in parts of downtown they run November 1 through April 1, overnight between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Vehicles that block plows on snow-priority streets are ticketed and towed. In the final week: confirm the right-of-way permit was issued, confirm elevator and access windows at both buildings, finish packing except daily essentials, and set aside documents, medications and chargers that travel with you. If snow is forecast, check the odd/even side for the block the evening before and again in the morning.

Walk the route the crew will take — from the truck position to the entrance and up to the room — and remove what blocks it: cars from the driveway, mats and bikes from the porch, snow and ice from the steps. Syracuse property owners (or their occupants) must clear abutting sidewalks by 6 p.m. the day after a snowfall, so agree with the landlord who handles that at both addresses.
