Movers in White Plains, NY
Sterling Oakbridge movers help White Plains homes and businesses with local and interstate moves, packing, storage and specialist services. Share your addresses, dates and inventory so we can review the work and prepare your estimate.
01 /
Start with the route and the work you need
White Plains moves come in two recognizable shapes. Downtown, the county seat's towers mean managed buildings: elevator reservations, certificates of insurance and set moving windows. In the neighborhoods — Battle Hill, Fisher Hill, Gedney Farms, North Broadway, Soundview — moves mean single-family houses, driveways and hills. Tell us which shape yours is at both ends, with dates, and we will plan the work around it.
The address tells us a lot before we ask. White Plains is almost evenly split between owners and renters — 51% and 49% of occupied homes (ACS 2024 5-year) — and about 37% of its housing sits in buildings of 50 units or more, while roughly 30% was built before 1940. A move here might involve a freight elevator and a loading dock, a steep driveway and a finished basement, or one of each. We plan for the buildings you actually have.
Many White Plains moves are short hops within the city or to a neighboring Westchester town; others run the full corridor to or from New York City or out of state. Local and interstate work is planned and priced differently, so say early which yours is.

Choose the moving help you need
Most White Plains households book a local move with some level of packing help. A smaller number need storage between a sale and a closing, specialist care for fragile or high-value pieces, or a long-distance shipment with a single agreed price for an unchanged scope. Each is a different scope of work, so the estimate starts from what you actually need rather than a package.
Local moving covers White Plains and the surrounding Westchester municipalities. Long-distance moving covers interstate shipments. If your move combines both — for example, a White Plains house into storage, then delivery to another state — say so at the start so the stages are priced and scheduled together.
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |

Plan a White Plains business move around access and operations
We provide commercial moving for offices, shops, studios and practices with equipment that needs individual review. As the Westchester county seat, White Plains concentrates courts, county government, law firms and corporate offices in managed downtown towers, where freight elevators, certificates of insurance and reserved loading are standard; outside the core, many businesses occupy converted houses and low-rise professional buildings with their own access limits. Send a furniture and equipment list, the pickup and delivery instructions, and the date or work period you need to protect.
Identify the last working day at the old location, the first required use of the new one and the person authorized to receive the shipment. If the move needs separate preparation or delivery stages, we can plan those around the access the property permits. One local caution: the city does not permit downtown street and sidewalk closures from November 1 through New Year's Day except in extenuating circumstances, so a business move that needs a crane, a lane or a POD downtown should avoid the holiday season or clear it with the city's Code Enforcement office first. The guide's building-access section explains how to collect property rules before committing to a date.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

Plan the carry from the truck to the room
In downtown White Plains and the larger apartment buildings, access means paperwork and timing. Co-op and condo buildings run moves through the managing agent: expect a certificate of insurance requested from the mover, a reserved service elevator, fixed moving windows and sometimes a deposit or fee. Ask for the written moving rules at both ends as soon as the date is set — buildings commonly require days of lead time for the elevator booking and the COI, and neither is something a crew can fix at the door.
In the residential neighborhoods, access means terrain. Streets in Battle Hill, Fisher Hill and parts of Soundview slope; driveways can be short, narrow or shared, and roughly 30% of the city's housing predates 1940, with the porch steps, narrow halls and tight stair turns of its era. A sofa that fits the room may not fit the staircase; measure the largest pieces against the actual route, and tell us the floor, the stairs, the door widths and where a truck can legally stop.
For each address we need the same five answers: floor and elevator situation, the truck's legal standing position, the carry distance from that position to the entrance, any shared or managed segments, and the building's written rules if it has them. The guide's building-access checklist lists the questions in full.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which City or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Make the curb arrangement part of the move
White Plains does not run a moving-truck reservation program — but it has a clear legal chain, and knowing it changes how you plan. The starting point is a useful carve-out: city code § 7-3-93 requires no street-obstruction permit for loading or unloading goods across a sidewalk to or from a truck standing at the curb, provided the work is prompt and otherwise lawful. A moving truck that stands legally at the curb while the crew loads or unloads needs no city permit. The Commissioner of Public Works may set specified hours for such work.
The truck must still follow parking law while it stands there. The city's meter rules apply Monday through Saturday — 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. downtown, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. elsewhere — and most on-street spaces carry a one-hour limit that is enforced even when the meter is paid. On-street parking is free on Sundays and six listed holidays. For a full-day downtown move, feeding a metered space is a fragile plan; discuss the building's own loading options and the timing with us early.
When the job needs more than prompt loading — a reserved stretch of curb, a lane partially blocked, a crane, or a POD or dumpster left on city land — the instrument is a street-obstruction permit from the Department of Public Works' Code Enforcement office (914-422-1208), under code § 7-3-86. Fees start at $150 in residential districts and $300 elsewhere, with short-term options of $30 for one day or $60 for two; a deposit applies. The Code Enforcement page confirms the office handles exactly these cases — including "storing a dumpster or 'pod' on city land" — and notes the November 1 to New Year's Day moratorium on downtown street and sidewalk closures.
The step-by-step White Plains curb section walks through the decision path, the phone numbers and the garage alternatives.

Choose packing, furniture preparation and specialist care
Packing decides most White Plains moves. Pre-war houses and garden apartments hold full lives in rooms that were never sized for modern volume, and tower buildings add a hard constraint: everything must fit the reserved elevator window, so boxes and furniture need to be ready when it opens. Decide early whether you pack, we pack, or a mix — typically we pack the kitchen, books and fragile items while you pack clothing and personal papers. Art, mirrors, instruments and other sensitive pieces get individual preparation with materials fitted to the item.
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

What affects your White Plains moving cost
Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total
Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.
A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.
Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price
For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.
Locally, the practical cost drivers in White Plains are access and volume. A downtown apartment with a reserved elevator and a loading dock moves faster than a walk-up with street parking a block away; a house with a steep driveway and three finished levels takes longer than a ranch with the truck at the door. The curb arrangement matters directly — a truck standing legally at the curb shortens every carry, and a street-obstruction permit or garage alternative is a real planning cost, not an afterthought. Packing level, furniture disassembly and any disposal or storage stage change the total as well. The estimate reflects the work you describe — accurate addresses, floors and inventory make it accurate.
For long-distance shipments, the agreed price holds while the shipment and service scope stay as agreed; changes to either reopen the price. City fees — a street-obstruction permit, meter time, a garage permit — are separate from the moving estimate.

From the first conversation to placement
Dedicated long-distance moving
Our dedicated long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and delivery, with the same moving crew at pickup and drop-off. Confirm the pickup, delivery and any storage stages in your move plan. The survey and move-planning team performs a separate role from the crew carrying out the move.
The review starts with your two addresses, dates and inventory. We recommend the right level of estimate for the work — a detailed list for a straightforward apartment, a closer review for a full house, a business or specialist items. Before moving day we confirm the scope in writing: what is packed by whom, the access plan at both ends, the curb arrangement and the timing windows — including the building's elevator reservation and COI, where those apply.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

Plan around the holiday moratorium and the snow months
Two White Plains calendar facts shape moving dates. From November 1 through New Year's Day, the city does not permit street and sidewalk closures in the downtown area during the holiday shopping season unless the Commissioner of Public Works grants an exception — so a downtown move that needs a crane, a closed lane or a POD placement should be scheduled outside that window or cleared with Code Enforcement first. Ordinary truck loading at a legal curb position is a different matter, but the season is still the busiest for downtown deliveries.
Winter is the other planning season. The airport weather station's record shows measurable snow from roughly November through April, with December through March the core and a long-term average on the order of 30-plus inches a year — our computation from the station's data, not an official forecast. Snow does not cancel most moves, but it changes the preparation: after a snowfall, the abutting owner or occupant must clear the sidewalk within two hours in business districts and ten hours in residential ones, so both addresses need a shoveling plan before the crew arrives. We watch the forecast with you in the final week and agree how a storm day would be handled.
Families with children add one more date: the school district's kindergarten choice window runs in January and February for the following school year, so a spring or summer move that involves kindergarten benefits from decisions made months earlier. Late-August turnover around the area's colleges exists but is modest in White Plains — end-of-month dates at that time book out first; that is our own workload observation, not a city statistic.

Prepare for the day you actually booked
In the final week: confirm the elevator reservation and certificate of insurance at both buildings, confirm the truck's standing plan — legal curb position for prompt loading, an approved street-obstruction permit, or the building's own dock or lot — finish packing except daily essentials, and set aside documents, medications and chargers that travel with you. If snow is forecast, confirm who clears the sidewalk at each address and when; the city's deadlines run two hours in business districts and ten in residential ones after the snow stops.
Walk the route the crew will take — from the truck position to the entrance and up to the room — and remove what blocks it: cars from the driveway, mats from the porch, snow and ice from steps and walks. In managed buildings, meet the staff contact named on the moving rules and keep the reservation confirmation with the moving papers.
Anything you are not taking needs a plan before the truck arrives: White Plains collects bulky household items at the curb on the second garbage day of your week — mattresses only if wrapped in plastic and taped — and metal items and electronics by appointment. A curb pile on moving day itself is not a legal disposal route. If disposal belongs in the moving scope, raise it during the estimate rather than on the day.

Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
The more concrete the request, the more useful the answer: both addresses, preferred dates plus an alternative, the inventory or a room-by-room outline, floors and access at both ends, the building rules if it is a managed property, packing expectations, and anything fragile or oversized. Photos of the largest pieces, the stairwells and the curb position help us price the actual work. For an interstate shipment, ask for the carrier's legal operating name and written terms; the federal Protect Your Move checklist explains what interstate movers must provide.

Questions before you move
Can I book a move entirely within White Plains?
Yes. We provide local moving within White Plains and the surrounding Westchester municipalities. Send both addresses, your dates, inventory and access details so we can plan the crew and work required.
Do I need a permit for the moving truck in White Plains?
Usually not. City code § 7-3-93 exempts prompt loading and unloading across a sidewalk from a truck standing legally at the curb. Meter and posted-limit rules still apply while it stands. If the job needs a reserved stretch of curb, a blocked lane, a crane or a POD on city land, that is a street-obstruction permit from DPW Code Enforcement (914-422-1208) — apply early; fees start at $150–$300, with $30–$60 short-term options.
My building is a co-op. What will they ask for?
Expect the managing agent to require a certificate of insurance from the mover, a reserved service elevator and a fixed moving window, sometimes with a deposit or fee. Ask for the written moving rules at both ends as soon as your date is set and share them with us; we plan the crew and timing around the window you are given.
Do you move offices and businesses in White Plains?
Yes. Send the equipment and furniture list, building instructions at both ends and the dates to protect. Downtown buildings usually require certificates of insurance and reserved freight windows, and the city restricts downtown street and sidewalk closures from November 1 through New Year's Day.
How is the price of a White Plains move set?
Local moves are planned against the work described: volume, access, packing and any extra stages. Long-distance shipments receive an agreed price that holds while the agreed scope stays unchanged. We do not quote fixed prices without reviewing the work.
Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
Can you dispose of the furniture I am not taking?
Disposal is not part of a standard moving scope. White Plains picks up bulky household items at the curb on the second garbage day of your week — mattresses must be wrapped in plastic and taped — and metal or electronics by appointment. If you want disposal discussed as part of the job, raise it during the estimate.
