Movers in Charleston, WV
Plan your Charleston move around the shipment, the buildings and the work you need. Sterling Oakbridge offers residential and commercial moving, packing, storage and specialist services. Share both addresses, possible dates and the full carrying route so the estimate reflects your actual move.
01 /
Start with the Charleston address and its approach
A Charleston move can begin on a fairly level Kanawha City block and end at a hillside house, a downtown apartment or a raised East End porch. The distance between addresses tells only part of the story. Identify where the vehicle can stand, how the crew reaches the entrance and which stairs, turns or shared spaces lie between it and the final room.
Confirm that the property is inside Charleston, West Virginia. South Charleston is a separate municipality, and a Charleston mailing address alone does not settle the owner of the street or the service rules. The City’s neighborhood planning material gives useful local context; permission still belongs to the authority and property responsible for the actual address.
List the household rooms, basement, garage, outside storage and specialist pieces. Explain whether the shipment goes straight to the new home or needs a separate storage stage. Keep preferred dates distinct from confirmed possession and receiving access, especially when more than one property contact must coordinate the move.
02 /
Choose the work you need
Choose services by the work to be performed, not by assuming everything is included in a truck booking. The inventory, access review and estimate establish what is handled, what is prepared in advance and which additional arrangements are needed.
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |
| Interstate moving | Pickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when needed | Destination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment |
| Commercial moving | Office and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictions | Business type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect |
| Packing and unpacking | Selected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpacking | What you will pack and what you want us to prepare |
| Storage and staged delivery | Storage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery plan | Expected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage |
| Designer and hotel furniture receiving | Receiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed plan | Expected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site |
For a staged move, identify what travels now, what remains accessible and what needs a later delivery. A storage option is useful only after its intake, access and onward delivery have been agreed.

Keep the business handoff practical
For an office, studio or shop, nominate one person to approve the move and another, if needed, to release the destination for use. List workstations, shelving, stock, equipment and records by room or department. Identify the first area that must reopen and the items that support it.
Confirm landlord rules, freight access, alarm contacts and any contractor requirements before fixing the sequence. A delivery does not itself reconnect networks, commission equipment or make a workspace operational. Assign those tasks to the responsible providers and allow time to test them.
If customers or staff still use the premises, agree a clear work area and a route that preserves exits. Explain any limits on downtime, staged pickup or the order of unloading in the estimate request.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.
04 /
Trace the route from vehicle to room
Send photographs or a walkthrough of the actual entrance, not just the front of the building. Include curb-to-door distance, porch steps, door widths, tight turns, stair landings and the path to each room. At the receiving address, check the same route with the largest pieces in mind.
An older house may have a generous room behind a narrow vestibule. A ground-floor apartment may still have a raised threshold or several outside steps. Measure the limiting opening and note whether a door can be removed with permission. Do not assume furniture can travel through a window or across a neighbor’s property.
For a shared building, confirm the service entrance, every elevator involved, the reservation window and who releases the elevator. Identify deposits or access charges and who collects them. If the slot is short, ask what protected preparation may happen beforehand and keep the actual carrying work inside the authorized period.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which City or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Choose the correct Charleston curb arrangement
Charleston’s currently linked bagged-meter form explicitly includes moving furniture. It lists $15 per space per day and says bagging happens only after payment. Requests made with less than 24 hours’ notice cannot guarantee that parked vehicles will vacate; use that warning to allow time, not as a promise that a one-day application is sufficient.
If the setup closes a street or sidewalk, use the separate Traffic, Parking and Transportation application. It asks for the location, dimensions, dates, hours and a traffic-control plan, and says to allow seven days for processing and approval. A bagged meter does not authorize a blocked travel lane or pedestrian route.
A loading-zone vehicle permit serves another purpose: active loading and unloading for up to 30 minutes, with extended use considered separately. Ask the mover which permission fits the actual operation. Read the Charleston street-access sequence before selecting a position or treating an ordinary meter payment as a reservation.

06 /
Prepare the contents for the route
Decide which rooms you will pack and which need packing help. Keep keys, identification, medication, chargers and the first-night essentials with the person who needs them. Mark cartons by destination room and identify fragile contents without exposing private information on the outside.
Books belong in small book cartons; a large box filled with books becomes a different handling problem. Empty items that require it, separate parts carefully and tell the estimator about valuable or unusually fragile pieces. Discuss preparation of furniture and specialist items before the crew arrives.
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

Give the estimate the details that change the work
Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total
Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.
A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.
Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price
For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.
The useful comparison is the agreed scope. Share the inventory, packing requirements, stair and elevator routes, carrying distance and any separate destinations. Include a garage, basement, storage locker or another pickup even if it is close to the main address.
Ask which charges belong to the moving scope and which come from the building, parking authority or another provider. A City meter bag is not a moving-company price. A building reservation is not proof that the public curb will be available.
If a decision is still open, identify it clearly: an extra room, an uncertain closing date, unconfirmed access or a possible storage stage. Update the estimate when the shipment or service changes so both sides are planning the same work.

Agree the delivery and protection arrangements
Dedicated long-distance moving
Our dedicated long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and delivery, with the same moving crew at pickup and drop-off. Confirm the pickup, delivery and any storage stages in your move plan. The survey and move-planning team performs a separate role from the crew carrying out the move.
Plan the two addresses in sequence. Pickup and delivery windows need to be compatible with loading, travel and unloading; they do not need to be identical. Name the people who release each property and can answer an access question while the move is underway.
For an interstate move, review the written documents and the FMCSA consumer guidance. Keep the inventory and agreed services together with the access confirmations. Raise a change while there is still time to adjust the plan.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

Make slopes and cleared access part of the plan
The City’s planning material identifies steep slopes and narrow rights-of-way in parts of the hills. Inspect the actual driveway grade, turning area, steps and landing. A photograph from the street should show both the entrance and the transition from vehicle to carrying route.
Charleston’s snow and ice rule assigns clearance duties to the specified occupants and owners. Arrange who will clear the adjoining sidewalk and the private approach, then check them again before the crew arrives. Street treatment does not establish that a porch flight, shaded walk or driveway is ready.
The company’s practical scheduling experience includes heavier work in summer and around the end and beginning of the month, with a further mid-month rise. This is not a measured Charleston demand forecast or a fixed-price promise. Offer workable dates and allow time for street review, building reservations and possession changes.
10 /
Keep decisions and the carrying route clear
Before loading, confirm that the destination is available, the person with keys is reachable and the receiving window still works. Walk the planned route with the crew, identify items that stay and keep children, pets and visitors away from the work area.
If the reserved curb is occupied, an elevator fails or possession is delayed, pause the affected step and contact the named decision-maker. Set the decision time before losing another option. The alternative might be a separately approved position, a revised delivery window or confirmed storage; it needs permission, capacity, access and agreed costs.
Include the people in that fallback plan. Keep medication, documents and essentials accessible, decide where the household can wait and specify what confirmation allows the move to resume. Do not treat an unconfirmed storage phone number or an improvised street position as a ready alternative.

Request an estimate with the open questions visible
Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
Send the pickup and delivery addresses, preferred and alternative dates, inventory and services needed. Add access photos, stairs, elevator reservations, long carries and any separate stops. State what is confirmed and what still depends on a landlord, closing, City approval or another provider.
For neighborhood, school, utility and disposal preparation, use the Charleston arrival guide. You can request an estimate while resolving those details; make the uncertainties visible so the plan can be reviewed before they become moving-day surprises.

Questions before you move
Can you plan a move involving stairs or an upstairs apartment?
Include every outside and inside flight, narrow landing, doorway and long carry in the access review. Photos and measurements help identify the limiting part of the route and the preparation needed.
Does paying a meter reserve space for the moving truck?
Ordinary meter payment does not create an exclusive reservation. Ask Parking Operations about the bagged-meter process, payment and the actual spaces, and confirm any street or sidewalk closure separately.
Can a loading-zone permit cover a whole moving day?
The published vehicle permit allows active loading and unloading for up to 30 minutes. Extended use needs separate consideration by the Parking Director. A moving job may instead need rented meter spaces and a closure approval for its particular setup.
Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
What if my closing or elevator reservation changes?
Tell us before pickup when possible. Confirm who can approve a revised receiving window and whether an alternative destination or storage has actual availability, access and agreed charges.
Can you help with a business move?
Describe the inventory, premises, working hours and reopening priorities. Separate the moving work from equipment commissioning, network reconnection and other tasks assigned to your providers.
What should I send first?
Send both addresses, dates, inventory and required services, with access photos and known restrictions. Include the details still awaiting confirmation so the estimate can reflect the real scope.
