Moving Storage and Redelivery in Poughkeepsie NY
If the old home must be empty before the new one is available, the belongings need somewhere to go. Sterling Oakbridge can review moving, storage and later delivery as a connected plan.

The first decision is the size and certainty of the gap: one known night is a different problem from a renovation with no reliable finish date.
Check whether you need storage at all
Ask whether the old property can hold agreed items a little longer, whether a receiving garage can be used with permission or whether building management can offer a different work window. Get authorized access settled before the load is moved. A seller's friendly suggestion is not the same as an agreed occupancy arrangement.
An illustrative local example: a family leaves a city apartment on Friday, but receives a Town of Poughkeepsie house on Monday. The new garage could remove the need for warehouse storage if access is authorized, the garage is suitable and the receiving plan is agreed. It might still require a later internal furniture move. Compare that cost with the storage sequence instead of treating either as free.
For student belongings, use the current college housing rules. Vassar's residential FAQ says it does not provide storage outside a student's room. That makes the gap between permitted occupancy periods a real planning question, rather than an assumption that belongings can remain on campus. Vassar residential life FAQ.
Overnight truck hold or warehouse storage?
An agreed overnight hold keeps the shipment on the truck for a short, confirmed interval. Sterling Oakbridge's additional charge for one overnight is $250 for a small truck or $300 for a large truck, per truck. This is added to the moving charges. Confirm the truck size, hold arrangement and next delivery window; it is not a general daily storage rate or a promise that a truck can wait indefinitely.
A longer or uncertain gap may need storage. Ask where the shipment will be held, what conditions apply, how access works, what notice is required for delivery and which protection terms cover each stage. Do not assume that warehouse storage means walk-in self-storage access, or that a climate requirement is satisfied merely because the goods are indoors.

The storage charge is only one part
The full sequence includes pickup and packing where selected, travel to storage, unloading, storage charges, later reloading, travel to the receiving address and final unloading. Each handling stage uses labor. A short stay does not remove the work of unloading and reloading the shipment.
Ask for those stages to be itemized. Add any retrieval visit, split delivery, specialist packaging or changed address before comparing alternatives. Local hourly estimates help plan the staffing and time; they are not a fixed total or completion cap.
You can reduce unnecessary handling by setting a reliable receiving date, keeping the shipment smaller and delivering in one planned release when practical. If a contractor, landlord or another party is involved in the delay, ask about reimbursement or approval beforehand and keep written scope and receipts. We cannot decide liability from the delay alone.

Pack for the gap as well as the final home
Keep daily clothes, medicines, documents, chargers, work equipment and children's immediate needs outside the stored load. Make the list with the length of the gap in mind. A bag that covers one night may not cover three weeks.
For the stored contents, record what belongs together and where it should go at delivery. Tell us if you will need a particular item earlier. The warehouse arrangement may make a single-item retrieval an additional handling job. At the final home, have someone available to confirm placement and inventory.
Questions about moving storage
Can I access one box while everything is stored?
Ask before booking. Access depends on the storage arrangement and the shipment's layout. Retrieval may require notice and additional labor.
Is an overnight truck hold always cheaper?
Compare the complete agreed sequence. One known night may avoid warehouse handling, but a changed receiving date or multiple trucks can change the comparison.
What if the delivery date changes?
Tell the planning team as soon as you know. Confirm revised storage, notice and delivery terms in writing rather than assuming the original crew or slot remains available.
