New York / City relocation guide
Moving to Cambridge
Cambridge is a village of about 2,300 in the Battenkill valley, Washington County: older porched houses, a DPW with seasonal pickups, Liberty Utilities water, the Cambridge Central schools, and a calendar of local events. This guide helps you compare its areas, set up the practical basics and prepare the move itself.

01 /
Start with the decision in front of you
Three reading routes through this guide, depending on where you stand. If you are still choosing an address, read orientation, the area comparison and housing first — compare the Main Street setting with the actual access and layout of each property. If you have children, go next to schools — the Cambridge ladder, both schools in the village. If you already hold keys or a closing date, go to arrival and work backwards: the Liberty account, the hauler arrangement, and the truck plan.
When the address is settled and the move itself needs planning — dates, inventory, access and the estimate — the Cambridge moving page is the working document.

Understand Cambridge before comparing addresses
Cambridge is an incorporated village in Washington County, in the Battenkill valley between Glens Falls and Bennington. The Village of Cambridge owns the procedures: the DPW's street and sidewalk work (the village clears snow from village sidewalks, too), the clerk's office (518-677-2622). The ACS2024 five-year estimates describe housing across the village, with sampling uncertainty: about 74% of households own, 64% of the stock is single-unit, the median owner value is $193,800, and the mean commute is about 33 minutes (ACS 2024 5-year).
Daily life organizes around Main Street — the shops, the library, the commons — with the valley towns carrying the bigger errands. Confirm the property’s water, electricity, internet and refuse arrangements before setting service dates.

Compare the whole property, not just the price
Compare the actual building and its rooms. The ACS2024 five-year village estimates show a median owner-occupied value of $193,800 against a median household income of $72,600 (ACS 2024 5-year, via Census Reporter). The building's age and condition decide the move logistics as much as the price.
The due-diligence list follows the type. In houses: the roof and systems' ages on the older stock, the basement, and the water account — Liberty Utilities runs the system, so the account's status is a closing item. On the edge roads: the well and septic where they apply. In rentals: the landlord's written move rules.

05 /
The valley commute — test yours anyway
The ACS2024 five-year estimate puts mean travel time to work at about 33 minutes for workers who did not work at home. It does not identify your destination or establish a particular journey time. Test your real route at your real hours, in the season you will actually keep.
The county transportation directory lists regional bus and rail links; check the stop, schedule and last connection for your journey. Its county-wide list does not promise a Cambridge village stop. County programs for older residents require eligibility and advance registration; ask about availability for medical visits and errands. If anyone works from home, verify internet service at the address before closing.

The Cambridge ladder, both schools in the village
Cambridge Elementary and Cambridge Jr./Sr. High School share the school building at 24 South Park Street. The district’s registration page starts with online pre-registration and registrar follow-up. Contact Kris Eastman at 518-677-8527, ext. 1416 to confirm the address, grade, required records and first attendance date before arrival.
Prepare residency and prior school/health records with the district; ask about the process if permanent housing or documents are not ready. Transportation handles stops and routes at 518-677-2653, ext. 1012. Arrange the school-day trip and an alternative until the receiving arrangements are confirmed.
07 /
Liberty water, and per-address accounts
The Cambridge water system is operated by Liberty Utilities, a private company. Customer care is 877-426-6999; water emergencies are handled 24/7. Use the start/transfer service process to confirm the supply, account responsibility and service date for your property.
For electricity, heating fuel and internet, ask the owner or landlord about the installed systems and confirm availability, installation timing and responsibilities with the actual provider. Coordinate meter readings and start dates with possession; keep a temporary internet plan if installation is later than arrival. Confirm the property’s sewer or septic arrangement and any maintenance obligations. See waste for refuse and cleanout planning.
08 /
Your hauler, plus the DPW's seasonal pickups
Confirm the address’s refuse and recycling service with the owner or landlord, including who pays, pickup day and accepted materials. Book furniture and appliance disposal before moving week; do not assume a yard pickup will take them.
The village DPW separates brush pickup in spring and late September to mid-October from leaf collection in mid-October through early December. Its published rules exclude furniture, appliances and tires. Ask DPW at 518-677-3252 about the current schedule and eligibility before setting material out. Leave the street, sidewalk and moving route clear.
09 /
The curb plan on village blocks
The truck position is planned from photos of the street, driveway and carrying route. Photos help the survey; they do not reserve the curb or authorize a stop. The village’s published parking regulations address posted restrictions and removal during snow emergencies. Check the current signs and any loading or reservation requirements with the village clerk (518-677-2622) before the date; obtain property permission for a driveway.
The village maintains its streets and sidewalks in winter. Confirm who will prepare your private entry and carrying route; a plowed street does not establish private access. The moving page’s parking section turns the agreed position into the delivery plan.
10 /
Walk the full route before moving day
Village-house access here means the usual pinch points: the porch, the older front door, the narrow stair with a landing turn, the basement stair. Measure the largest pieces against the real route, and photograph the stairs and the parking situation for the estimate.
Outside, watch older sidewalk slabs and porch boards for the edges that eat dolly wheels. In rentals, the landlord's written rules come before the day.
11 /
A Main Street, the commons, and the festival calendar
Main Street offers everyday anchors: the Cambridge Public Library at 21 West Main Street and the Cambridge Valley Farmers Market at Owlkill Commons, 17 West Main Street by the green footbridge. The market lists Sunday 10–1 hours through October 25, 2026; check its current notice for another season. Hubbard Hall and the Freight Yard campus at East Main and Washington Streets offer classes and cultural visits; check the activity and access you need.
Test the weekly loop at morning and evening hours: school, work, groceries and the pharmacy you actually use. Arrange medical-record transfers and the next appointments before a gap in care; confirm that a chosen practice is accepting your household. Keep essentials available while accounts and deliveries settle. The library and market are useful first-week visits, with their own hours.

12 /
The valley calendar: festivals, leaf windows, storms
Check current village event notices before fixing the truck date; a past festival or July2026 celebration does not establish the next season’s closure. The DPW calendar has distinct brush and leaf windows. Winter conditions can affect both the street and private approach; confirm clearing responsibilities and the usable route.
Book the date early, hold an agreed backup, and plan cleanout with the service that will accept the material. The moving page converts those checks into a date-and-backup plan.

13 /
Turn the closing date into an arrival plan
Work backwards from the day you get keys. As soon as the possession date is credible: confirm the water start/transfer process, electric and internet installation, and refuse arrangement, and book the move through the Cambridge moving page. One week out: confirm the truck plan and the backup date, plan the cleanout on the hauler's day, and set aside what travels with you. Before the first school day, start district registration and confirm attendance and transport; do not defer this to the first days after arrival. Check vehicle and voter record requirements with the New York agencies for your circumstances, and learn the current market day.
Keep a Plan B for the failures that matter here: a storm date (the backup moving day, agreed in advance) and a slipped closing (which items go to storage, which travel with you). The guide's sections hold the details; the moving page holds the estimate.

Questions before you arrive
What kind of municipality is Cambridge?
An incorporated village in Washington County, New York — about 2,300 people in the Battenkill valley between Glens Falls and Bennington. This is Cambridge, New York — not the Massachusetts namesake. The village clerk (518-677-2622) owns the local procedures; the DPW runs the streets and the seasonal pickups.
How long is the commute from Cambridge?
The ACS2024 five-year estimate is about 33 minutes for workers who did not work at home. It is not a journey time to Glens Falls or Albany. Test your actual route; confirm regional connections and any eligibility-based transport before relying on them.
Where do Cambridge children go to school?
Cambridge Elementary and the Jr./Sr. High School are at 24 South Park Street. Begin with district registration before the first school day; confirm eligibility, documents and placement with the registrar. Ask transportation about the actual stop and route. A village map does not establish assignment.
Who provides water in Cambridge?
Liberty Utilities operates the Cambridge water system. Customer care is 877-426-6999; the emergency number is available 24/7. Use the provider’s start/transfer process to confirm service at your address and the agreed date. Confirm electricity, heating, internet and sewer/septic at the property.
How does trash work in Cambridge?
Confirm refuse and recycling at the address. The DPW has separate brush and leaf collection windows and excludes furniture, appliances and tires. Book the appropriate cleanout service before moving week.
What should I know about the village's calendar?
Check current village event notices and the market’s current season before choosing a date. The published DPW calendar distinguishes brush pickup from fall leaf collection; confirm the accepted material and schedule for your address.
How do I arrange the moving estimate?
Use the Cambridge moving page to request an estimate: both addresses, dates plus an alternative, a room-by-room inventory (basement, barn and workshop included), and photos of the entry and the curb. The more concrete the request, the more accurate the plan and price.
