New York / City relocation guide

Moving to Kerhonkson

Kerhonkson is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place of about 1,700 in Ulster County’s Rondout valley. A Kerhonkson mailing address can cover a wider area. This guide helps you inspect the actual home, confirm the property’s town and account responsibilities, check school registration and transport, and prepare the move itself.

Start with the decision in front of you

If you are still choosing an address, read orientation, the address checks and housing first. Confirm the property’s town, actual systems, costs and access. With children, move next to school registration before the first attendance day. If you already have a closing or key date, use arrival to work backwards through accounts, disposal and the vehicle plan.

When the address is settled and the move itself needs planning — dates, inventory, access and the estimate — the Kerhonkson moving page covers that work.

Understand Kerhonkson before comparing addresses

Kerhonkson is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place in Ulster County’s Rondout valley. Its Census map describes a statistical place, not every Kerhonkson postal address or a service boundary. Check the actual property’s town before using Rochester or Wawarsing procedures.

The ACS 2024 five-year profile estimates 1,677 people. Owner occupancy is 58.9% with a 12.8-point margin, single-unit housing 84.0% with a 7.0-point margin, and vacancy 20.9% with a 9.7-point margin. These are sampled community figures, not current listings, an explanation of weekend homes or a mapped distinction between family streets and cabins. Route 209 is a practical transport reference: UCAT Route E lists a Kerhonkson stop at Stewart’s.

Check the address before committing

Use these five checks to investigate the address you are considering: town responsibility, school registration, the actual home, disposal eligibility and utility accounts. They do not describe named residential neighborhoods or establish school zones, service boundaries or loading permission.

The town-and-address check

Rochester and Wawarsing departments have separate responsibilities; confirm the actual property’s town.

A Kerhonkson postal address is not the CDP map or a municipal service boundary.
Daily travel
Check the real destinations and vehicle position; Route 209 is a reference, not a commute promise.
Before choosing
Use the appropriate town office for account, road and disposal questions.

The school-registration check

Rondout Valley Central Registration confirms the current process for the actual address.

Compare the whole property, not just the price

Compare the actual rooms, costs and condition rather than infer a house type from the street. The ACS 2024 five-year profile gives a median owner-occupied value of $236,000 with a $16,621 margin and household income of $78,459 with a $6,808 margin. Neither is a current asking price or an affordability assessment for your household.

Confirm whether water and wastewater are public connections or private systems. Where a well or septic system exists, review the relevant records and inspection questions before purchase. Where public service applies, ask about the account and handover. Inspect the real approach, surface, slope and turnaround for daily access and moving day; show any outbuilding included in the inventory.

Test the trip and the bus return

Kerhonkson has county bus service. UCAT Route E connects the Route 209 stop at Stewart’s with Ellenville, SUNY Ulster and Kingston; the route index lists Monday–Saturday operation and fare-free fixed-route service. Check the latest outward and return timetable, any connection and the actual walk to the stop. Service on a route does not establish access from every home or at every hour.

If you drive, test your real destination at your expected hours and consider the return journey and weather. The ACS community mean is 25.9 minutes with a 16-minute margin; it is not a Kingston or ridge-employer journey time. For work from home, verify service availability and installation at the actual address before relying on it.

Start registration before the first school day

Contact Rondout Valley Central Registration about the new address, current placement and intended start. The current district is discussing grade-level configuration, so an old federal school-directory grade list is not the current assignment for your child. The registrar is at 122 Kyserike Road, Accord, Third Street entrance, Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m.; call 845-687-2400 extension 4814.

Choose online registration or the appropriate paper packet. The online instructions ask for residency evidence, parent/guardian photo ID, proof of age and applicable custody documentation. A lease/deed is one route; alternatives are listed when those are unavailable. Save completed forms before uploading legible documents. The initial registration need not wait for physical/immunization records, but confirm the child’s health and other requirements before attendance. Linked packet forms should be checked for the current situation.

Arrange school transportation separately. Current 2026–27 routes are linked, but the district or operator must confirm the child’s actual bus/stop. Ask before the first day; the hamlet map and a school’s presence do not assign a stop.

07 /

Confirm public or private systems at the address

Kerhonkson has a public water/sewer district maintained by the Town of Wawarsing department, 845-647-7800. That does not prove every property is connected. Ask the owner and department about the actual connection, account responsibility and handover; arrange appropriate checks for a private well or septic system where one exists.

Before the key handover, agree which water/wastewater accounts or maintenance responsibilities move to you and on what date. For electric, heating and internet, verify the actual provider, available service and any installation with the owner and provider; do not assume coverage from the hamlet name. The department’s 2025 overdue-account notice is historical, so check current billing instructions for your own account. Trash arrangements are separate — see waste.

08 /

Choose the eligible station before loading

First confirm the property’s town and your chosen facility’s eligibility. Rochester’s station at 100 Airport Road, Accord, lists Tuesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday 7:30 a.m.–3:45 p.m. and restricts permitted residential users and vehicles. Its guide also lists nonresident/day fees, so call 845-626-5273 to resolve eligibility before travel. Permits/punch cards can be bought there by check or credit, no cash. For Wawarsing, confirm current arrangements with its station at 101 George Young Boulevard, 845-879-2603. Free Exchange donation acceptance requires a volunteer present.

Rochester requires a permit for each trip, including recycling or exchange pickup, and does not take commercial waste. Its vehicle limit is no larger than a pickup or equivalent car-and-trailer combination; household construction/demolition waste has a two-cubic-yard limit and may be refused for capacity. Confirm the actual load before travel rather than send the moving crew’s truck.

Presort accepted recyclables and ask the attendant where items go. The station can sell permits, punch cards and disposal payments by check or credit; the guide lists a $3 credit transaction fee. No cash is accepted. For Free Exchange donations, call ahead because a volunteer must be present; pickup and donation rules differ. Wawarsing’s page links a 2025 fee sheet, so confirm its current fees, hours and item acceptance by phone. Keep usable donations, recyclable material and paid disposal separate before moving week.

09 /

Confirm permission and the actual vehicle route

Agree a vehicle position for the specific property, date and truck. Check the owner’s permission, approach, clearance, usable surface, exit and carrying distance. A driveway is a possible option where it is suitable; the hamlet name does not prove that every home has one or that a street position is allowed.

For a road or right-of-way question, identify whether Town, County or State is responsible. Rochester Highway can answer Town-road questions at 845-626-7221; its driveway-installation procedure is distinct from permission to park a moving vehicle. If a problem cannot be resolved with the owner, contact the appropriate town department before the date. Keep a disposal trip separate from loading access. The moving page carries this into the actual job plan.

10 /

Walk the full route before moving day

Walk the full route from the proposed vehicle position through the entry, stairs and turns. Photograph and measure the actual openings with the largest items in mind. An older home, rental, workshop or cabin may have different access; inspect the chosen property rather than assume every valley home has a narrow stair.

Check gravel, grass and other changes in the carrying surface. Locate a well or septic installation where one exists before proposing a truck path; confirm permission with the owner or landlord. Resolve written building access rules and clear the agreed route before moving day.

11 /

A crossroads, the rail trail, and the ridge

Build your weekly loop around actual destinations and hours: groceries, school, work and appointments. Test the route from the home you are considering, including the bus stop and return schedule where that is useful. A postal address or regional description does not establish that every errand is nearby.

The O&W Rail Trail is a local recreation option to investigate. The project owner’s July 2024 report describes completed improvements on a 3.2-mile section between Accord and Kerhonkson. That report does not confirm today’s surface, entrances or closures, or a continuous trail to Kingston. Check the chosen access point and current notices before a visit rather than treat all ridge climbing, swimming and trailheads as one daily routine.

12 /

Plan for weather and the facility calendar

Review the actual approach and forecast before the date. Rain, snow, ice or thaw can matter on a particular surface, but a valley address alone does not establish a days-long delay. Agree who will clear the route and how you will confirm a safe assigned vehicle position if conditions change.

For Rochester disposal, use the Tuesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday schedule and check the station’s current holiday notices. Call 845-626-5273 in inclement weather before loading. Keep a backup for access or a delayed closing, and confirm any revised moving date and storage stage. The moving page covers the job’s date-and-backup plan.

Review the approach and clear the agreed carrying route.

13 /

Turn the closing date into an arrival plan

Work backwards from the key handover. Before arrival, confirm the property’s town, actual water/wastewater systems and account responsibilities, arrange electric/heating/internet as needed, and start school registration when relevant. Choose a cleanout option and confirm eligibility, vehicle size and item acceptance before buying cards or loading a station trip.

In the week before the move, confirm the truck position, carrying route and backup date. Inspect the approach after a relevant weather change and set aside documents, medication, chargers and first-night essentials. Use the Kerhonkson moving page for the actual dates, inventory, access and estimate.

After arrival, complete the appointments and account steps you agreed, confirm attendance and transportation, and check current official procedures for any vehicle, license or voter-record changes that apply. This planning sequence is not a legal deadline. Keep a Plan B for an unusable approach or slipped closing: which goods may need storage, which travel with you, and who confirms the new dates.

Questions before you arrive

What kind of place is Kerhonkson?

Kerhonkson is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place in Ulster County’s Rondout valley. Its Census polygon is a statistical place boundary; a Kerhonkson mailing address and each town’s utility, road or disposal responsibility are different questions. Confirm the property’s town before choosing a procedure.

How long is the commute from Kerhonkson?

Test your actual outward and return journeys. UCAT Route E serves Route 209 at Stewart’s Monday–Saturday; check the current timetable, connection and walk to the stop. The ACS 2024 five-year community mean is 25.9 minutes with a 16-minute margin, not a measured journey to Kingston, Ellenville or a particular employer.

Where do Kerhonkson children go to school?

Use Rondout Valley Central Registration to confirm the actual address, current school placement and first attendance day. Online or paper registration is available; the office is at 122 Kyserike Road, Accord, Third Street entrance, Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m., 845-687-2400 extension 4814. Prepare residency evidence, parent/guardian photo ID, proof of age and applicable custody documentation. Ask separately about transportation and health records before the child starts.

How does trash work in Kerhonkson?

Does Kerhonkson have public water and sewer?

Kerhonkson has a public water/sewer district maintained by the Town of Wawarsing department, 845-647-7800. That does not prove every property is connected. Ask the owner and department about the actual connection, account responsibility and handover; arrange appropriate checks for a private well or septic system where one exists.

What should I know about a valley move here?

Inspect the chosen property’s approach, surface, clearance and carrying route. Confirm a suitable vehicle position and the owner or road authority’s permission. Locate private utility installations where they exist, include any actual outbuilding inventory, and keep a backup for weather or a delayed key handover. No blanket driveway or busy-fall scheduling assumption replaces that check.

How do I arrange the moving estimate?

Use the Kerhonkson moving page to request an estimate: both addresses, dates plus an alternative, a room-by-room inventory (shed and workshop included), the driveway's length and surface, and photos of the entry. The more concrete the request, the more accurate the plan and price.
