Moving to Lehighton

Lehighton is a Carbon County borough on the Lehigh River, with municipal electric, garbage, sewer and water billed together and a $5 moving-in/out permit. Compare the actual property and journeys, arrange accounts and school registration, and prepare the move before key day.

Start with the decision in front of you

Three reading routes through this guide, depending on where you stand. If you are still choosing an address, read orientation, the address comparisons and housing first — compare the full property, street access and daily journeys. If you have children, go next to schools for current registration and address-specific assignment checks. If you already hold keys or a lease date, go to arrival and work backwards: the utility account, the $5 permit, and the truck plan.

When the address is settled and the move itself needs planning — dates, inventory, access and the estimate — the Lehighton moving page is the working document.

Understand Lehighton before comparing addresses

Lehighton is an incorporated borough in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, on the Lehigh River. Jim Thorpe is the county seat. The Borough of Lehighton handles its local procedures, with the office at 1 Constitution Avenue (610-377-4002). Confirm whether the actual property lies inside the borough; a Lehighton mailing address alone does not establish its municipality.

The borough supplies municipal electric, garbage, sewer and water on one monthly bill, and requires a $5 moving permit for moves in or out. The ACS 2024 five-year profile estimates about 5, 300 people and roughly half of occupied homes rented. These are whole-borough survey estimates, not descriptions of individual blocks or company customers.

Find the area that fits your routine

Use these practical comparisons to inspect an address. They do not define official neighborhoods or assign a school, utility provider or authorized truck position. Confirm the municipality first; the borough boundary map is an orientation aid.

The borough-office errand

Borough administration is at 1 Constitution Avenue; the municipal utility office handles account questions and the $5 moving permit.

Compare the whole property, not just the price

The ACS 2024 five-year borough profile estimates a median owner-occupied value of $213, 600 (margin of error $21, 437) and median household income of $64, 651 (margin of error $23, 488). These survey figures are not current listings or a household budget. The estimated 14.4% vacancy rate has an 8.1 percentage-point margin of error and includes more than homes offered for rent or sale.

The due-diligence list follows the type. In houses: check roof and systems' ages, basement conditions, the carrying route and the accounts that apply to the address. In rentals: obtain the landlord's written move rules, verify included utilities and arrange the $5 borough moving permit when applicable. Confirm account start/end dates around the actual handover.

Test the drive and the actual transit service

The ACS mean travel time to work is about 25 minutes (margin of error 5.6 minutes), across surveyed borough workers who did not work from home. It is not a journey time to Allentown. Drive your real route at your real hours, in the season you will actually keep. If anyone works from home, verify internet service at the address before signing.

Carbon Transit 701 and 703 run Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with Lehighton downtown, Walmart and Carbon Plaza among listed stops. Flex 752 offers weekday reservation trips within its Palmerton–Lehighton–Weissport–Jim Thorpe area. Arrange a trip at least a day ahead through 888-253-8333; confirm both endpoints, the stop or pickup point, return journey and current timing.

Use the August 24, 2026 service update: route 702 was cancelled, so do not plan around an old timetable. Check the service days against work, school or appointment hours before choosing the address.

Arrange school registration before attendance

Lehighton Area School District lists an Elementary Center, Middle School and High School. Confirm the school assignment and bus arrangements for your new address with the district at 610-377-4490 before attendance; nearby school names or a postal address do not settle that question.

The current 2026–27 new-student registration uses PowerSchool. Prepare student and parent identification, immunization records, and two accepted residency documents dated within the last six weeks. The district also asks for a moving permit and current special-education or custody documents where applicable. Start early for a fall arrival or mid-year move; ask the district for help if you cannot use the portal.

One bill: electric, garbage, sewer, water

Lehighton is a municipal-utility borough: the Utilities office (610-377-4004, Monday–Friday 8: 30–4: 00) bills electric, garbage, sewer and water together, monthly — and also bills water customers in Weissport, Franklin and Mahoning townships. Electric service signs up at the utility office with ID; online and credit-card payments run. The municipal Light & Power department maintains the lines — outages 610-377-4005 in business hours, 570-325-9111 after hours, weekends and holidays.

One quirk that matters at moving time: the borough requires a moving permit, $5, when moving in or out — ask the office how to arrange the permit and the appropriate account start/end dates; confirm the documents and applicable electrical-service deposit before visiting.

08 /

Garbage on the municipal bill

Garbage comes on the borough's monthly bill with electric, sewer and water. For your actual address, confirm the collection day, accepted materials, recycling instructions and bulky-item arrangements with the utility office (610-377-4004). Ask about charges and set-out limits before a move-out cleanout; billing alone does not establish what may be discarded.

Public Works starts leaf collection in November, weather permitting: leaves at the curb line on the street, no parking on piles and no set-out before rain that could wash them into drains. Sweeping runs Wednesdays on First Street and Bankway, March–November; other streets use posted orange-sign dates. Keep the carrying path and drains clear.

09 /

The curb plan, the sweeping, and the permit

Photographs help assess a curb or driveway position, clearance and the carrying route. Check the actual signs and restrictions, and obtain permission for private access. Ask the borough at 610-377-4002 about any street-space arrangement that needs clarification before the date. The $5 resident moving-in/out permit does not reserve a loading space.

On First Street and Bankway, Wednesday sweeping runs March through November; check posted restriction hours. Other streets use orange no-parking signs on designated dates. The moving page's parking section turns this into the truck plan.

10 /

Walk the full route before moving day

At a house, inspect possible pinch points: the porch, the older front door, the narrow stair with a landing turn, the basement stair. For an apartment, inspect the shared entry, stairs or lift and booking requirements. Measure the largest pieces against the real route, and photograph the stairs and the parking situation for the estimate.

Outside, watch older sidewalk slabs and porch boards for the edges that eat dolly wheels. In rentals, the landlord's written rules come before the day.

11 /

Test the weekly errands from the address

Make a weekly destination list from the address: groceries, pharmacy, medical appointments, school and work. One confirmed community stop is the Lehighton Area Memorial Library, 124 North Street (610-377-2750); check its current hours before visiting. Borough account questions go to the office at 1 Constitution Avenue. County-seat errands belong in Jim Thorpe, so confirm the actual county department and appointment.

Test the routine at morning and evening hours. Check crossings, the continuity of a walking route, and how a missed bus or unavailable car affects the return journey. A riverside scene does not establish an accessible path from the property you choose.

The valley calendar: leaves, sweeping, storms

Lehighton's calendar has three beats. The busy seasons: summer brings the busier moving weeks — book the date early, hold a backup. The fall beat: November's leaf collection is weather-dependent. And the storm dates: winter weather moves any date on the calendar — check the borough's current notices, posted snow routes and automated calls before planning street access.

The steady discipline wins here: book the date early, hold a backup, and settle the permit and the utility transfer ahead of the day. The moving page converts the calendar into a date-and-backup plan.

Follow current borough instructions and keep the carrying route clear.

13 /

Turn the date into an arrival plan

Work backwards from the day you get keys. Before fixing the date, arrange the $5 moving permit and utility account dates with the office, verify internet service, and book the move through the Lehighton moving page. With children, start district registration before attendance and gather the recent residency documents. As the date approaches, confirm truck access and a backup date, collection arrangements and the essentials that travel with you. After arrival, check current Pennsylvania vehicle and voter-registration requirements for your situation and learn the posted street calendar.

Keep a Plan B for the failures that matter here: a storm date (the backup moving day, agreed in advance) and a slipped lease or closing (which items go to storage, which travel with you). The guide's sections hold the details; the moving page holds the estimate.
