Movers in Lowell, MA
Moving into a converted mill, leaving a duplex or relocating a Lowell business? Sterling Oakbridge provides household and commercial moving, packing and storage. Start with the contents, the full route through each building and a workable place for the truck; we will review those details for your estimate.
01 /
Plan the move around your Lowell address
A brick condominium above downtown storefronts and a house with upstairs bedrooms can need very different moving plans. In a mill conversion, the difficult part may be the route from the street through a shared entrance and elevator. In a smaller home, it may be a porch turn, an internal staircase or furniture that was assembled upstairs. Tell us how the contents will reach the truck at pickup and their final rooms at delivery.
Lowell's built environment includes industrial conversions and a broad range of older house forms. The City's architectural guide describes that variety; the National Park Service documents the conversion of mill buildings into homes. Those histories help explain the different settings. They do not tell us whether your particular property has a freight entrance, a working elevator or permission to use either.
Use these hypothetical planning scenarios to prepare the first useful information for your move.
| If your move looks like this | Prepare this first | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| A downtown condominium with a shared elevator | The manager's moving instructions, the actual elevator and entrance route, reservation window and curb arrangement | The crew and loading sequence must fit both the building window and the truck position |
| A side-by-side home with bedrooms upstairs | Photos of the stair turns and landing, dimensions of large pieces, and what needs dismantling | Furniture preparation can be planned before the carry begins |
| A move between a sale closing and a later handover | The person who can confirm keys, the latest decision time and any items you need during a gap | Storage or a changed delivery date needs an agreed receiving plan before the original plan fails |
For a short local move, the work at the two addresses can matter more than the drive. For a longer move, include the destination's restrictions from the start. A Lowell-to-New Hampshire move crosses a state line even when the towns are close together.
02 /
Choose the moving help you need
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |
| Interstate moving | Pickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when needed | Destination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment |
| Commercial moving | Office and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictions | Business type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect |
| Packing and unpacking | Selected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpacking | What you will pack and what you want us to prepare |
| Storage and staged delivery | Storage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery plan | Expected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage |
| Designer and hotel furniture receiving | Receiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed plan | Expected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site |
You can ask for the complete move or identify the part you want help with: selected rooms, furniture transport, packing fragile contents or delivery after storage. Make the division clear. If you are packing the kitchen but want us to prepare the mirrors and furniture, list both responsibilities so the estimate includes the right work and materials.
For an apartment, describe the contents and actual access rather than relying on the bedroom count. An open mill apartment with large furniture can require a different method from a similarly sized home with several small rooms. Photographs of the largest pieces and the route are more useful than guessing a carton total from floor area.
03 /
Move a Lowell office or small business
A business move starts with what must keep working and who can release each part of the premises. Separate desks and storage furniture from stock, confidential files, screens and equipment that needs technical preparation. Name one person who can approve the inventory and room plan, and a receiving contact who can identify the final locations at the new site.
For premises above or beside active shops, send the shared-entrance rules and the hours when customers, tenants or deliveries need access. A workable sequence might move packed back-office contents first and leave essential workstations until their agreed shutdown. That sequence must match the actual building permission and the people available to disconnect and restart systems; it is not an automatic after-hours booking.
Lowell's published commercial loading-zone rules concern vehicles serving local businesses and include a 30-minute limit. A loading zone does not by itself provide the space or duration for an entire office move. Include the proposed truck position and work window in the access review.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.
04 /
Check the whole route through each property
Check the path from the intended truck position to the final room, including every change of level. An elevator somewhere in the building does not establish that the furniture can reach it. The route may include an entrance step, a narrow vestibule, a passenger lift, a second corridor and another turn before the apartment door.
Send clear photographs or a continuous walkthrough of that route. For the largest pieces, provide the item dimensions and the clear openings at the restrictive points, including the elevator door and usable cab space when relevant. Include protruding rails, door closers and the space needed to turn. We review whether the item can be carried as it stands, needs approved disassembly or requires a different method. Do not dismantle a built-in or remove a door without the owner's permission and an agreed plan.
For a short elevator reservation, ask the manager which preparation can happen before the slot. Materials can arrive and furniture can be prepared early only in places and at times the property permits. The truck, crew, protected route and ready contents then need to meet at the start of the carry window. A booking email alone does not establish that the entrance is open or the loading position available.
If a doorway or shared landing cannot accommodate the item safely, stop that part of the carry. The next choice is an approved alternative route, suitable disassembly or a revised item plan. An open window is not a substitute for a reviewed method; crane work is outside our service scope. Keep the route usable for residents and emergency access throughout the move.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Arrange suitable truck space in Lowell
For metered curb space, Lowell offers temporary meter bags or orange no-parking signs for moving vans. The City's pay-by-plate page and Parking FAQ list a rental charge of $14 per space per day. Start with the actual address, date, work window and the space needed for the chosen vehicle and loading operation. One ordinary parking bay may not accommodate the whole working position.
The City's deposit instructions conflict. The FAQ says no deposit; the rental form linked by that FAQ calls for a $50 deposit per space and two checks. The separate permit-information page also mentions a deposit. Before budgeting or collecting the signs, ask the Parking Office at 978-674-4014 for the current deposit, payment, return and collection instructions. The current pay-by-plate page and FAQ list 75 John Street, while the permit-information text says 85 John Street; confirm where you should go.
Ask how far ahead the request and posting must happen, who installs and removes the signs, and what to do if another vehicle occupies the reserved area. Keep the actual confirmation and instructions with the move plan. An application or a paid rental is not a guarantee that the curb will be empty when the truck arrives, nor permission to block a sidewalk, entrance or traffic lane.
Paying for ordinary metered parking is a different arrangement. The FAQ says parking is generally limited to two hours and cannot be extended all day through repeated app or kiosk payments. Check the posted restrictions for the actual position. A nearby loading zone also has its own permitted use and time limit; neither option should be treated as an all-day household-move reservation.
A container left in the public right-of-way follows a separate dumpster and POD permit process, with review requirements and an additional meter-bag charge if it uses metered space. A proposed street or sidewalk closure belongs with Engineering's occupancy review. These are different operations from an ordinary van load. Describe the actual obstruction to the responsible office; do not apply a construction permit's dates or notice period to every household move.
If the intended position cannot be approved, settle the alternative before dispatch: a different permitted position with its longer carry included in the estimate, a revised time, or another reviewed vehicle and loading plan. The building manager must approve private-property access, and the relevant authority must approve use of public space. Do not send the truck to wait in an unconfirmed driveway, garage or travel lane.

Packing, furniture preparation and special items
For full packing, identify the rooms and contents you want us to prepare. For partial packing, mark the selected items and leave the remaining responsibilities explicit. Keep identification, medicines, keys, chargers and documents you need during the move in a separate bag that travels with you. If delivery may be delayed, add the clothes and household essentials you will need during that gap.
Photograph fragile and high-value pieces before packing and describe their construction, dimensions and any existing damage. A glass cabinet, stone top or large artwork may need preparation beyond ordinary furniture wrapping. The route matters too: protection adds bulk, and dismantling a piece may change how it can pass a stair turn. Send that information before materials and labor are settled.
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

Understand the estimate and possible extra work
Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total
Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.
A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.
Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price
For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.
The useful comparison is the complete scope at both properties. Include the inventory, packing responsibilities, furniture preparation, stairs and elevator route, distance from the truck, building window and delivery arrangements. Ask the written estimate to identify the treatment of travel time, waiting, extra stops, storage and any municipal or building charges that apply. A smaller inventory does not remove a difficult access route.
For a household move wholly within Massachusetts, the Department of Public Utilities' moving guide explains operating authority, filed tariffs, written estimates and the bill of lading. Check the mover's applicable authority and tariff, show all the goods being moved and read the moving documents before signing. The guide explains that an estimate is not a fixed total and that working time, packing and additional services affect the charge; compare the tariff treatment of travel time as well as the labor estimate.
A Lowell pickup going to Manchester, New Hampshire is an interstate move. Use the written interstate shipment, service and delivery terms for that route. Our Manchester moving page can help you prepare the destination details.
If the contents or access change after the estimate, send the change before the work begins. An extra storage stop, unprepared kitchen or lost elevator slot can alter the required work. Ask for the revised scope and charges to be explained before authorizing additional work.

From the first inventory to delivery
Direct and consolidated long-distance moving
Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.
- Describe the shipment. Send both addresses, a room-by-room inventory or clear photos, preferred dates and any fixed lease or closing deadline. Flag heavy, fragile and complex items.
- Resolve access and scope. Share building instructions, the complete route and truck-space requirements. Identify who obtains each permission and who can confirm it. Agree the packing work and any storage or specialist preparation.
- Review the written plan. Read the estimate, service scope, charges and pickup and delivery arrangements. For a Massachusetts intrastate household move, the DPU guide says you should receive the bill of lading before loading; read its front and back and keep your copy.
- Prepare for pickup. Separate personal essentials and items staying behind. Keep an authorized contact available to answer inventory or access questions before the affected work proceeds.
- Receive and check the delivery. Give the crew the room plan, identify items needing reassembly or agreed unpacking, and record any concern promptly under the written reporting instructions. Keep the estimate and delivery documents together.
Choose protection from the actual written options before the move. Identify high-value items separately and ask how the applicable terms treat them. Interstate valuation rules are different from the rules for a move wholly within one state; proximity to the border does not make those documents interchangeable.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

09 /
Pick dates with a workable weather and access plan
Start with the dates you cannot move: the lease ending, building reservation, closing and access to keys. Then compare the pickup and delivery options that remain. If your dates are flexible, send a range, including a middle-of-month option if practical. That gives more planning choices without assuming a quieter date or a lower price.
For winter moves, monitor Lowell's Snow Operations notices. During a declared snow emergency, the City prohibits parking on City streets and City parking lots; vehicles obstructing snow removal can be ticketed or towed. An earlier moving-space arrangement should not be treated as an exemption. Resolve the legal truck position and safe access again if a declaration changes the conditions.
Ask the property contact who will clear the permitted path and steps before the crew arrives. Wet or icy surfaces can affect the carrying method even after the street is plowed. If the route or truck position is unsafe or unavailable, the planning contact and the person controlling the property need to decide on a confirmed alternative or changed schedule before the crew commits to the affected work. A public parking garage is not an assumed place to hold or unload a moving truck.
For summer or a school-year deadline, work backward from the actual occupancy date and the time needed for packing. Keep essential rooms usable until their agreed preparation time. Do not postpone unresolved access or packing decisions until the truck is outside.
10 /
Moving day, unwanted items and a usable Plan B
Have one person available at pickup and one at delivery who can identify what moves, where it goes and which decisions need approval. Keep the written building instructions and parking confirmation accessible. Walk the route together before starting the affected carry; mark items staying behind and keep children, pets and loose belongings out of the working path.
Arrange unwanted-item collection separately from loading the shipment. Lowell's waste FAQ directs unusable bulky items to WM booking at 1-800-972-4545, and mattresses and box springs to UTEC recycling booking. Establish whether your address uses that service or a private building collector, which items and quantities are accepted, the collection date and any charge before leaving anything out. Recycling, removal and the move are separate scopes; do not assume the crew or the City will take everything remaining on the day.
If keys or the delivery route are not ready
Use a decision time early enough to retain an alternative. For example, if the agent cannot confirm keys by the agreed check-in before dispatch, the customer or other named decision-maker should contact the moving planner and the receiving property contact then. Do not wait until loading is finished to discover that there is nowhere authorized to receive the shipment.
The alternatives are a confirmed later delivery window, agreed storage with a subsequent delivery, or a revised moving date. Before choosing, establish that the receiving location or storage arrangement can actually accept the shipment, when access is available, who will be present and what additional handling, storage, waiting or redelivery costs apply. Put the chosen option and who authorizes its charges in writing. Keep essential belongings with you if they will be inaccessible in storage.
Resume delivery only when the keys, legal truck position, permitted route and receiving person are confirmed for the new time. A verbal hope that a closing will finish, an unbooked storage space or an unauthorized curb position is not a working alternative. The same decision pattern applies if a snow ban or lost elevator slot prevents the original plan.

Send the details for your Lowell estimate
Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
Include both addresses and unit numbers, your preferred date or range, the inventory and photographs of the largest or unusual items. Add floors, stairs, elevator details and the actual path from the truck at both ends. For a building-managed move, attach its written requirements and contact information; for metered curb space, include the reservation status and any unresolved Parking Office instructions.
Tell us what you will pack, what you want us to pack, and whether you need storage, unpacking or separate removal work. Identify the person receiving the shipment and any deadline that cannot move. We can then review a complete scope and explain the next step for the estimate, rather than treating a bedroom count or a proposed parking space as a finished moving plan.

Questions before you move
Do you handle moves into Lowell mill apartments and condominiums?
Yes. Household moving can include loading, transport, delivery and agreed furniture preparation. For a mill apartment, send the manager's moving instructions and the entire route from the truck to the unit. A shared elevator, courtyard or attractive front entrance does not establish the permitted furniture route or available moving window.
Can you move a smaller home or only a full house?
You can request a smaller shipment or selected rooms as well as a full-home move. List the actual pieces, cartons and work you need at each end. The size of the home alone does not show the labor required, particularly when a few large pieces must pass stairs or a restrictive entrance.
How do I reserve metered space for a moving van in Lowell?
Use the City's temporary meter-bag or orange no-parking-sign arrangement for moving vans. The published rental is $14 per space per day. Give the Parking Office the address, date and required working position, then obtain its current application, posting, collection and enforcement instructions. Ordinary payment at a meter does not reserve the curb for the move.
Is there a deposit for Lowell meter bags?
The City's published instructions disagree: the Parking FAQ says no deposit, while its linked rental form requires $50 per space and two checks; the permit-information page also mentions a deposit. Confirm the current deposit, payment method and return terms with the Parking Office at 978-674-4014 before budgeting or collecting the materials.
Can the truck use a loading zone for the whole move?
Do not plan on it. Lowell's published commercial loading zones serve local businesses, require commercial plates and have a 30-minute limit. Other loading and metered spaces have their own conditions. A household or office move needs a suitable legal working position for its actual duration, agreed before dispatch.
Does a POD on the street use the same permission as a moving van?
No. A POD or dumpster in the public right-of-way follows Engineering's separate permit process; metered space also has a meter-bag charge. Describe where the container will stand and for how long. Do not treat a temporary van-loading arrangement as approval to leave a container, or copy construction-permit deadlines to every moving van.
What if another vehicle occupies the reserved space?
Use the Parking Office's instructions for an occupied reserved area and contact the moving planner before work starts. The practical options are another permitted position with the changed carry reviewed, an approved change of loading plan or a revised time. Do not assume the truck can double-park or block a sidewalk while the space is resolved.
What access information do you need for stairs or an elevator?
Send the full route at both addresses: street or driveway, entrance, every stair or lift, corridors and final room. Add photos and the restrictive clear openings for large furniture, including the elevator door and usable cab. Also send the permitted hours and reservation terms; an elevator listing alone does not show that the furniture will fit or that the lift is available.
Can you coordinate a COI or a building's moving requirements?
Yes. We can coordinate a certificate of insurance, truck-permit and elevator requirements, including union requirements where applicable. Send the written instructions and building contact early. Agree who applies, who grants approval and which fees apply. Coordination or an application does not itself confirm access or reserve the moving window.
Can packing happen before a short elevator slot?
Yes, preparation can be planned ahead of the carry window where the property permits it. Agree when materials may arrive, where preparation can happen and when the route must be ready. Packing during a restricted carry slot uses some of that slot; do not assume an unauthorized hallway can serve as the staging area.
Do you offer partial packing?
Yes. You can pack most belongings and ask us to prepare selected fragile items, furniture or rooms. Identify those items before the estimate and keep your packing responsibilities explicit. Boxes are charged separately, packing uses working time, and unusual protection or complex items require their own reviewed scope.
Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
Can you move a piano, safe or large artwork?
These items are available for individual review and quote. Send photographs, dimensions, weight if known, construction or model details, and the complete route at both properties. The method and preparation must suit the item and access; availability of a specialist service does not establish that every item can pass a particular stair or doorway.
How is a local Lowell moving estimate calculated?
Local moving is based on working time and the agreed services. The inventory, packing, furniture preparation, stairs, elevators and truck-to-door distance help determine the estimated work. Ask how travel time, waiting and other applicable charges are treated in writing. Estimated or minimum hours are not a cap on the final charge.
Is a written estimate a fixed total for a move within Massachusetts?
No. The Massachusetts DPU guide explains that the estimate is not a fixed total and that time, packing and additional work affect charges. Show the complete inventory, check the applicable tariff and read the moving documents before signing. Keep the estimate and the bill of lading; the latter should be provided before loading.
Is a move from Lowell to New Hampshire interstate?
Yes. Crossing from Massachusetts into New Hampshire makes it an interstate move even over a short distance. Review the written shipment, price, delivery and valuation terms for that route. Massachusetts-only moving guidance should not be substituted for the interstate arrangements simply because the destination is nearby.
Can I choose direct delivery or a smaller consolidated shipment?
Direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same pickup and delivery crew. For a smaller shipment, you can ask about consolidated service with a wider agreed delivery window. Send the destination and dates that cannot change so the available arrangement, receiving contact and any storage can be settled in writing.
What happens if my closing or keys are delayed?
Choose a confirmed revised delivery, agreed storage and redelivery, or a changed moving date before the original plan becomes unusable. Set a check-in time with the moving planner and the person controlling access. Confirm acceptance, timing, people and additional costs for the alternative; storage capacity or indefinite truck waiting should never be assumed.
Can a Lowell snow emergency affect the move?
Yes. A declared snow emergency prohibits parking on City streets and City lots, and obstructing vehicles can be ticketed or towed. Reconfirm the truck position and cleared property route if a declaration changes the plan. A previous curb arrangement is not an assumed exemption; agree a legal alternative or changed schedule before proceeding.
Will the City collect furniture or a mattress left after my move?
Collection needs a separate arrangement. The City directs unusable bulky items to WM booking and mattresses and box springs to UTEC recycling booking. First establish whether your address uses that service or a private collector, then confirm accepted items, quantity, date and charges. Leaving an item outside does not book collection, and the moving shipment does not include unagreed disposal.
Can you relocate an office and reconnect its computers?
We can move business furniture and equipment and provide IT transport and disconnection. Arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Include workstation and stock inventories, shutdown priorities, building access and a receiving room plan so the moving work and technical work have clear owners.
Is moving valuation the same as buying an insurance policy?
No. Valuation concerns the carrier's liability for the shipment; a separate insurance policy is a different product. For interstate household goods, Full Value Protection applies unless you choose Released Value through the required signed statement. Read the actual terms, charges and high-value-item conditions before choosing; do not apply interstate options automatically to a wholly intrastate move.
What should I send to request an estimate?
Send both addresses, the contents, preferred dates, floors and the complete access route. Add building instructions, parking status, large-item photos and the packing or storage work you want. If the job is complex, the planning team may recommend video or an in-person survey before completing the estimate.
