Movers in Hoboken, NJ

Sterling Oakbridge helps Hoboken households and businesses pack, carry and move their belongings. We plan the shipment, loading space and route through both properties together, whether you need a local move, interstate delivery, packing or storage between dates. Send your addresses and date constraints to request an estimate.

01 /

Plan the rooms, the curb and the receiving address

A Hoboken move starts with three connected decisions: what is going, where the truck can load, and when someone can receive the shipment. A short journey does not make a long staircase, shared elevator or unfinished packing disappear. Tell us about the complete job at both ends, including storage rooms, bicycles, roof-deck furniture and anything being left behind.

For a public-street loading position, the Hoboken Parking Utility's temporary no-parking program reserves specific curb space. It does not book your building's elevator or grant access to a private driveway. Identify the entrance the crew will actually use before choosing the reservation location; the front door on a listing may not be the authorized moving entrance.

Give us the exact pickup and delivery addresses, not just a neighborhood name or ZIP code. Hoboken is its own municipality: a nearby Jersey City or Weehawken address follows that jurisdiction's arrangements. If you are still choosing a home, keep that decision separate from booking the move; an expected lease or closing date is not yet permission to unload.

Choose the work you want completed

Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.

Moving helpWhat we can includeWhat to send
Local residential movingLoading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassemblyBoth addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property
Interstate movingPickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when neededDestination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment
Commercial movingOffice and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictionsBusiness type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect
Packing and unpackingSelected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpackingWhat you will pack and what you want us to prepare
Storage and staged deliveryStorage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery planExpected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage
Designer and hotel furniture receivingReceiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed planExpected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site

You can ask for a complete household move or a defined part of the work. Explain who will pack, which furniture needs preparation, and whether delivery should finish with boxes placed by room or with separately agreed box unpacking. This makes two estimates comparable: the same addresses and room count can describe very different amounts of work.

For a gap between homes, describe the expected storage period, receiving contact and things you will need during the gap. Keep travel documents, medication, keys and first-night essentials with you. Storage, access to stored contents and later delivery need an agreed plan; do not assume that a storage enquiry has reserved space.

Business moves with clear handoffs

We move office and business furniture, equipment and agreed inventory. Start with what must remain operating, the last working period at the old premises and the first usable period at the new one. A small office above a shop can involve several owners of the schedule: the tenant, both property managers, IT support and the person accepting the delivery.

Mark released items separately from retained stock, customer property and records that must stay with authorized staff. Agree the loading and receiving routes, elevator or dock bookings, certificate requirements and any union labor conditions before committing to a phase. An evening plan still needs municipal vehicle permission and building approval; after-hours service is not permission to leave a truck on the street overnight.

Your IT provider owns backups, the approved shutdown plan, reconnection and system startup. Describe large equipment by model and dimensions, including doors, turns and the receiving location. A delivery appointment for visitors is not evidence that a freight vehicle can use the same entrance.

IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.

We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

04 /

Follow every door, turn and elevator

Measure the narrowest usable opening along the whole carry route: outside gate, stoop, vestibule, internal doors, staircase turns, elevator door and cab. Include the trip from the truck to the entrance and any second elevator after a lobby or garage transfer. A sofa that fits the apartment door may still fail at a stair landing; photographs should show the approach and turns, not only the empty doorway.

For a managed building, send the written moving instructions and management contact. Sterling can coordinate its COI from each property's requirements. Agree who requests the elevator or loading appointment, then verify management acceptance and the actual booking. A certificate sent by email is not the same as approved access. Identify deposits, protection requirements, permitted hours and the person who releases the elevator.

If the permitted carrying window is short, consider delivering materials or completing packing earlier, but only with permission for that separate access. The pickup and delivery windows need to work in sequence, with travel and unloading between them; they do not need to be identical.

Example: an elevator slot shorter than the whole job

Imagine moving a household into a Hoboken apartment with an afternoon elevator booking. The useful plan is to finish approved preparation first, sequence the load by destination room and confirm who will operate or release the elevator. Before loading, the coordinator checks whether the receiving slot still covers unloading. If the slot is withdrawn, management must approve another one or the customer and Sterling must agree a different delivery stage and its costs. Keeping a loaded truck nearby is not a substitute for that decision.

We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.

The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Reserve the right length of curb in time

For an ordinary residential move at a nonmetered location, or a metered location that also permits residential parking, Hoboken Code §190-12.1 requires purchase ten days in advance, with HPU posting seven days ahead. Meter-only locations have a separate 24-hour purchase and four-hour posting rule. A meter beside the building does not by itself establish that the shorter rule applies.

Use HPU Online through the city's TNP instructions, or arrange the customer-service appointment described there. Provide street addresses bracketing the desired curb, the date and time, and the vehicle information HPU requires. There is a two-sign minimum; each sign covers about 15 feet. Choose sufficient space for the actual truck and a usable loading approach rather than treating two signs as suitable for every vehicle. HPU posts the signs; purchasers must not move them to a more convenient position.

Set aside a separate HPU fee based on reservation duration and sign count. The current pricing graphic and the code's base amounts differ, so use HPU's charge for your actual reservation rather than treating an older schedule as the final bill. For a personal or rental vehicle, obtain HPU's approval and register the required vehicle details rather than assuming automatic eligibility.

Call HPU dispatch at 201-420-2000, extension 1465 if reserved space is occupied or signs are damaged. Give the obstruction's plate or the damaged location. HPU or police handle enforcement; no immediate clearance time is guaranteed. The customer and move coordinator must decide whether an authorized alternative loading position still makes the job workable.

Private-property permission comes from its owner; city TNP signs cannot reserve it. A 24-hour reservation also does not establish overnight truck permission: §190-5 restricts trucks and specified commercial vehicles on municipal streets from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Review the actual vehicle and approved arrangements before planning overnight staging. Purchasers must remove the signs when the work is complete, or by two hours after the posted reservation expires, whichever comes sooner.

Example: a late residential booking

Suppose the move is eight days away and the proposed curb also allows residential parking. The ten-day purchase requirement has already been missed. Do not relabel that curb as meter-only or print substitute signs. Before dispatch, the coordinator can investigate an authorized private loading position or ask HPU about a genuinely applicable alternative. If neither is confirmed, revise the date or delivery arrangement and agree the consequences with both properties.

An empty curb is a proposed position; confirm the reservation and the complete approach before dispatch.

Prepare for the carry and the first night

Choose full packing, fragile-item packing or a split in which you pack ordinary belongings and we prepare selected pieces. Identify what must remain available until departure: bedding, a small kitchen set, children's essentials, medication and work equipment. Label cartons with destination rooms and separate anything that must not be loaded.

In a walk-up, keep finished cartons inside the apartment until the agreed carrying period rather than filling stairs or a shared landing. In an elevator building, make the packing plan fit the loading sequence. Tell us about unfinished packing before moving day so the estimate and crew plan can reflect the extra work.

Specialist services by individual quote

What needs attentionWork available for review
Complex furnitureBunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly
Heavy itemsPianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables
Art and collectionsFine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification
Hanging and installationPictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately
Business equipmentOffice furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route

Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

If a large piece will not pass the assessed route, review suitable disassembly or a different authorized entrance before the move. Basic furniture work and specialist preparation are different scopes. Crane work is outside Sterling's service scope, and a window lift must not be assumed from a photograph of a difficult staircase.

Compare the complete written scope

Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

For a household-goods move within New Jersey, an item list starts the conversation but does not replace the required on-site or video survey. The New Jersey consumer notice distinguishes binding and non-binding estimates. Under the ordinary process, the written estimate and Order for Service are provided at least 24 hours before the move; the regulated short-notice exception is limited, not a way to make every late request eligible.

Ask which estimate type you are receiving and compare the same inventory, packing responsibilities, access and receiving conditions. For an hourly job, extra carrying, a shared elevator, waiting for keys or added packing can change actual working time. A minimum number of hours is a billing condition, not a promise that the household will be finished within it.

Keep HPU charges, building charges, cartons, storage stages and separately quoted specialist or removal work visible in the plan. A move to Manhattan is interstate despite the short distance across the river. Provide the actual origin and destination so the applicable documents, protection choices and delivery terms follow the job.

08 /

Confirm the delivery and protection choices

Direct and consolidated long-distance moving

Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.

At delivery, identify who can accept the shipment, the authorized entrance, room placements and the separately agreed work to finish. Unwrapping furniture is part of delivery; unpacking carton contents or taking packaging away is a different task. Report changed access before the crew arrives so the plan can be reviewed.

Protection follows the route and documents. For a New Jersey intrastate household move, the state notice describes a basic liability option generally limited to $1 per pound and alternatives for increased valuation or separate insurance. Do not use the interstate 60-cent rule as the default for a move within New Jersey. The selected option, charges, exclusions and claims procedure belong in the actual moving documents.

For interstate household-goods moves, FMCSA explains Full Value Protection and the written Released Value choice. Valuation is the mover's liability arrangement; a COI for building access is not a policy insuring all of your belongings. Disclose high-value items and obtain the applicable written terms before loading.

09 /

Choose dates around real dependencies

Offer more than one date when your lease, closing or household schedule allows it. Compare the date on which you must leave with the date and time you can actually enter the new home. If a month-end lease, school transition or summer departure fixes one date, plan the packing, key handover and receiving appointment around it. A different day is useful only if the household and both properties can accommodate it.

Start early enough to satisfy the applicable HPU lead time and each building's document deadline. If the carrying window is tight, a separate permitted packing day may help; it adds a stage that must be priced and scheduled. The planning team can review alternatives, but a preferred date is only booked when the actual arrangements are confirmed.

Before a forecast of heavy rain or winter weather, review the authorized route, entrance condition and any current municipal restrictions. Do not send people or a loaded vehicle into an inaccessible receiving address. Agree who will make the go-or-change decision, when the alternative must be secured and where the household and its essential belongings will be if the move changes.

10 /

Leave a usable home, not an unsorted curb

Before dispatch, confirm keys, both contacts, the truck position, the carrying route, the accepted documents and the receiving window. Keep excluded items visibly separate, with clear instructions for the crew. Walk through the old premises after loading and the new premises after placement; record missing items or visible damage in the delivery documents.

If keys or elevator access are delayed, stop before the last workable alternative disappears. The customer or property representative confirms access; the Sterling coordinator reviews the crew, truck and shipment plan. Continue only with a confirmed receiving slot or an agreed alternative such as a later delivery or accepted storage stage. Set out the additional transport, waiting, storage and redelivery charges, and keep the family's accommodation and essential items separate from the shipment decision.

Example: cartons left after a downtown unpack

Imagine unpacking on Saturday at an address in Hoboken's Limited Business Area. The ordinary citywide Thursday paper schedule is not the whole answer for that address. The city's collection instructions give that area additional cardboard evenings, with set-out after 9 p.m. and no Saturday collection. Arrange a permitted holding place with management or include separately priced packaging removal; do not block the sidewalk while waiting.

Elsewhere in the city, paper and flattened, secured cardboard go out Thursday evening after 7:30 p.m. and must stay dry. Non-metal furniture and mattresses follow the Sunday, Wednesday and Friday garbage evenings; metal furniture and appliances have a different Thursday route. An upholstered sofa with metal parts still follows the non-metal rule. Construction debris and hazardous materials do not belong in ordinary curbside collection. Decide what will leave before the move and who is responsible for each accepted removal route.

Send a useful Hoboken move brief

Start with both addresses, your preferred dates and the inventory. Add floors, elevator or stair details, the proposed truck positions, your packing split and large or fragile pieces. Send the written building instructions, management contacts and any known HPU reservation details. Photos of entrances, landings and furniture help identify what needs closer review.

For a New Jersey intrastate household move, we arrange the required on-site or video survey before the estimate. You do not need to solve every measurement before contacting us; the planning team can identify the next information needed. The surveyor and moving crew perform different roles.

Tell us what remains uncertain, especially keys, closing, incomplete packing or a receiving date. We can then review a workable scope and the conditions that must be confirmed before moving day, rather than build the estimate around an access arrangement that does not exist.

Questions before you move

Can you move us within Hoboken or to another New Jersey town?

Yes. Sterling provides local household moving, with loading, transport, delivery and the agreed preparation. Send both addresses, the inventory, dates and access details. For a household move within New Jersey, the estimate follows the required on-site or video survey; a list alone does not replace that survey.

How early should I reserve curb space for a residential move?

For nonmetered curb or metered curb that also permits residential parking, buy TNP signs at least ten days ahead so HPU can post them seven days before the reservation. Meter-only curb has a different rule. Establish the actual parking zone first; the presence of a meter does not automatically qualify the location for the shorter timetable.

Can I arrange a move tomorrow?

Not with a newly purchased ordinary residential curb reservation: that requires ten days of advance notice. A next-day move may be workable with an authorized private loading position or a genuinely applicable meter-only arrangement, approved building access, a receiving plan and an available crew. New Jersey household-goods documents must also meet the ordinary timetable or the regulated short-notice conditions. None of these alternatives is an automatic exception for a late request.

How much curb should I reserve?

HPU requires at least two signs, each covering about 15 feet. The useful length depends on the truck and safe loading approach, including the door or ramp clearance. Review the actual vehicle with the move coordinator before selecting the sign count; the minimum purchase is not proof that every truck will fit.

Do you arrange COIs, elevator bookings and truck permits?

Yes, Sterling can coordinate its COI, elevator scheduling and moving-truck permit arrangements. Send each building’s written requirements and management contact. Agree who submits each request and pays the applicable charges, then verify management acceptance, the actual booking and the municipal reservation. An application or emailed certificate alone does not establish access.

What if a car occupies the reserved loading space?

Call HPU dispatch at 201-420-2000, extension 1465, with the vehicle’s plate and the reservation location. HPU or police handle enforcement. Tell the move coordinator immediately so an authorized alternative or changed timing can be assessed. Do not move the signs or assume the space will be cleared in a fixed number of minutes.

Can the moving truck stay overnight under a 24-hour reservation?

A 24-hour TNP reservation alone does not authorize overnight truck parking. Hoboken restricts trucks and specified commercial vehicles on municipal streets from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Confirm the actual vehicle and an approved parking or storage arrangement before relying on overnight staging.

Can a rental truck or personal vehicle use TNP space?

Use HPU’s approval process for the actual vehicle. The city FAQ requires approval for non-commercial vehicles, and the code requires personal-vehicle details including make, model and plate at purchase. Do not assume every rental registration qualifies as commercial. Send the vehicle details to HPU before treating the reservation as usable.

Does a city reservation cover a private driveway or loading dock?

No. TNP signs reserve public curb space, not private property. The owner or property manager must authorize a private driveway, dock or garage, and confirm the vehicle dimensions, access hours and carrying entrance. A separate public-street reservation may still be needed for the agreed approach.

Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?

Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.

Can you pack only the kitchen or fragile items?

Yes. Selected-item packing can be agreed separately from full packing. Identify the dishes, glass, artwork or other pieces you want prepared and the things you will pack yourself. Packing uses working time, company cartons are charged separately, and specialist crating needs its own review and quote.

What if the sofa does not fit the stairs or elevator?

Have the complete route reviewed before moving day. Suitable disassembly or a different authorized entrance may solve the problem, but the furniture’s construction and every turn matter. Basic assembly and specialist sofa work are different scopes. Crane work is outside Sterling’s services, and a window lift is not an assumed alternative.

Is a move from Hoboken to Manhattan interstate?

Yes. It crosses the New Jersey–New York state boundary even though the two addresses may be close. Provide the actual route endpoints, shipment and receiving conditions so the interstate documents, delivery terms and protection choices apply to the job.

Is the hourly estimate a final price cap?

No. Estimated hours help plan the crew and work; actual time can change with inventory, unfinished packing, access, waiting or travel. Review whether the written estimate is binding or non-binding and what it includes. A long-distance flat rate applies to the agreed shipment and services; added work or changed conditions need a reviewed written scope and price.

What protection applies to a move within New Jersey?

New Jersey intrastate household moving has its own consumer notice and liability choices. The notice describes a basic option generally limited to $1 per pound, increased valuation and separate insurance possibilities. The interstate 60-cent option is not the default for a move within New Jersey. Record the actual selected terms, price and exclusions before loading; a building COI is not full-value protection for your goods.

Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?

Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.

When can I put moving boxes and an old sofa out for collection?

For the ordinary citywide schedule, put dry, flattened and secured cardboard out Thursday evening after 7:30 p.m. Non-metal furniture and mattresses follow Sunday, Wednesday and Friday garbage evenings, including upholstered furniture with metal parts. The Limited Business Area has additional evenings and a 9 p.m. set-out time. Use the address’s applicable schedule and management’s holding arrangements, rather than leaving items at the curb immediately after delivery.

What if the new apartment is not ready for delivery?

Tell the coordinator before dispatch or loading whenever possible. The customer or property representative must confirm a receiving slot; Sterling then reviews a later delivery or an accepted storage stage, staffing and additional charges. Arrange where the household will stay and keep essential items with you. Continue only when the alternative destination, access and costs are agreed; a warehouse contact alone is not a reservation.
