Movers in Jersey City, NJ

Sterling Oakbridge provides moving, packing and storage help for Jersey City homes and businesses. We plan the work around your belongings, the loading space and the route through both properties. Tell us whether you are moving within New Jersey or across a state line, along with your dates and the help you need.

01 /

Start with both addresses and the work you need

A move between two Jersey City apartments can involve more handling than a longer drive between homes with easy access. The useful starting point is the complete job: belongings, preparation, stairs or elevators, loading position and the person who can open each property. Include a storage unit or any additional pickup in the first conversation so it is part of the plan.

For a home with an entrance above the sidewalk, show the outside steps as well as the interior staircase. For an elevator building, show the route from the loading entrance through any intermediate doors to the elevator and apartment. An elevator that reaches your floor does not by itself establish that a large piece will fit or that it is available for the move.

Jersey City's Historic Preservation page identifies Hamilton Park, Harsimus Cove, Paulus Hook, Van Vorst Park and West Bergen–East Lincoln Park as local historic districts. For a property with historic entrance details, agree on protection and a suitable carrying route. Do not assume that removing a railing or altering a doorway is part of ordinary moving work; any proposed alteration needs separate review with the property owner and the responsible city office.

If you are still choosing an address, keep the moving requirements with the housing questions. A lower floor can still have a difficult entrance, while a larger building may have a usable loading dock with limited hours. Ask for the actual moving instructions before committing to a date that depends on that access.

Choose the moving help that fits your situation

Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.

Moving helpWhat we can includeWhat to send
Local residential movingLoading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassemblyBoth addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property
Interstate movingPickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when neededDestination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment
Commercial movingOffice and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictionsBusiness type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect
Packing and unpackingSelected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpackingWhat you will pack and what you want us to prepare
Storage and staged deliveryStorage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery planExpected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage
Designer and hotel furniture receivingReceiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed planExpected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site

You can request transport and furniture handling while packing your own boxes, help with selected fragile items, or a fuller packing plan. Identify the division of work explicitly. For example, if you pack books and clothes but want us to pack the kitchen, say which cabinets, glassware and small appliances are included. This gives the estimate a defined task rather than an uncertain instruction to finish whatever remains.

Moves within a building are also possible. Tell us which rooms or floors are involved, whether furniture must be taken apart and whether a truck is needed at all. For a storage stage, separate the things going into storage from the things you need at your temporary address. Arrange the receiving location and later delivery before treating storage as a confirmed fallback.

03 /

Keep a business move separate from reopening the business

For an office or other commercial space, start with the work that must continue and the deadline for vacating the old premises. Mark furniture and boxes by their destination room or workstation, identify the person approving access, and provide the equipment list. Moving equipment into a room and having it ready for business are different milestones.

We can plan phased, evening or weekend work when the arrangements are agreed and the building permits access. A quieter period for your business is only useful if loading, elevators, receiving staff and any required building labor are available then. Put those confirmations into the schedule rather than relying on a general statement that the building is open.

For IT equipment, agree on shutdown and disconnection responsibilities before packing. Arrange reconnection, network checks and system startup with your IT team. For restaurant or other specialist equipment, provide dimensions, weight or model information and the required operation. Transport does not automatically include every technical service needed at the destination.

IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.

We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

04 /

Check the full route through each building

Measure the narrow points that control the move: the entrance door, vestibule, stair turns, landings, elevator opening and corridor corners. Send photographs of the approach and measurements for large pieces. The useful question is whether the item can travel through the whole route in a manageable orientation, including any agreed disassembly.

For a managed building, obtain its moving instructions and management contact. Confirm the permitted entrance, elevator or loading-dock reservation, required insurance paperwork, protective covering, any building charges and who will unlock the space. These are requirements of the actual property; another building's rules do not establish yours.

We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.

The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

A short elevator window may require packing and preparation beforehand. That works only when earlier access is permitted. Confirm where prepared boxes can remain without blocking a corridor and when the actual carrying may begin. If there are two elevators on the route, or a separate service lift, establish access to both rather than booking just the one nearest the apartment.

Fit the two properties into a realistic sequence. Delivery access must allow for loading, travel and unloading; pickup and delivery windows do not need to be identical. Ask each manager who can authorize an extension if a delay occurs. A request that has been submitted but not accepted remains an open item.

Arrange the truck space before moving day

For street loading, start with the Jersey City Parking Division. Its current page lists 356 Martin Luther King Drive, second floor, and 201-547-5538. Use those current contact details; the older linked form prints a different office address.

The city's linked parking notice and sign-request form distinguish two deadlines: contact Parking at least 72 hours before the required date, and post the signs at least 48 hours beforehand. Keep dated and timed photographs if you post them yourself. Confirm the applicable property category, number of spaces, period and fee when arranging the request.

The sign-request form waives the Traffic & Engineering permit attachment for a one-day move. That is not permission to close a travel lane or obstruct a sidewalk. For an operation requiring roadway or sidewalk occupancy, the Traffic Engineering application requests a complete submission at least two weeks ahead. Describe the proposed operation to the responsible division so the correct process is used.

Before requesting space, agree on the actual loading entrance and truck position. Include room for the loading operation, not just the parked vehicle. A reservation by the front door will not solve access if management requires delivery through another entrance. A resident parking permit is a separate matter and does not reserve a moving truck's loading space.

If the intended position is occupied on moving day, contact the coordinator and Parking before changing the operation. Confirm a lawful alternative, the carry distance and any effect on the building window. Do not start unloading on the assumption that the space will clear shortly or that a nearby corner is an acceptable substitute.

Decide what will be packed before the crew arrives

Agree on full or partial packing early enough to include the work in the schedule. Keep the items you will carry personally separate: keys, medicines, essential documents, valuables and the things needed for the first night. Mark boxes by destination room and identify fragile contents so they can be handled and placed appropriately.

Furniture preparation depends on the piece and its route. Tell us about large wardrobes, beds, sofas and wall-mounted items during the survey. Basic furniture disassembly is different from specialist work on a complex item; a plan to take something apart must account for its construction and reassembly at the other end.

Labor, materials and optional work

Item or taskHow it is charged
Basic furniture disassembly and reassemblyPart of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee
Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tapeNo separate charge for these basic protection materials
Boxes supplied for your moveCharged separately
PackingCharged for working time; boxes are separate
Unwrapping furniturePart of delivery
Unpacking the contents of boxesOptional work, charged for working time
Packaging and waste removalCharged separately
Complex furniture and other specialist workIndividually quoted after review

Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.

Specialist services by individual quote

What needs attentionWork available for review
Complex furnitureBunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly
Heavy itemsPianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables
Art and collectionsFine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification
Hanging and installationPictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately
Business equipmentOffice furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route

Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

If you are packing yourself, tell the coordinator before moving day if the agreed packing will not be finished. Additional packing takes labor and materials and may affect the carrying window. Reviewing that change while there is still time to adjust the plan is more useful than discovering it when the elevator booking begins.

Understand the estimate for your route

For a household move entirely within New Jersey, the Division of Consumer Affairs requires an on-site or virtual survey, a written estimate and the consumer notice. The normal advance paperwork timetable is at least 24 hours; limited short-notice provisions do not make every last-minute request eligible. Show all the belongings and explain both properties, packing and any storage stage.

A binding estimate is a different arrangement from a non-binding estimate. Read which one is being offered, what belongings and services it describes and how changes will be handled. The NJ consumer FAQ explains the distinction; do not treat a number given at the start of planning as a binding contract.

Jersey City to New York is an interstate move. The pricing models below describe the company’s hourly work and long-distance work quoted at an agreed flat rate. The written estimate for your route establishes which arrangement applies.

Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

Confirm travel, waiting, boxes, specialist work and applicable third-party charges in the written terms. For an agreed flat-rate interstate move, a longer journey alone does not change the price; another stop or other added work needs a written scope and price review before that work.

Plan pickup, delivery and protection together

Direct and consolidated long-distance moving

Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.

For a direct delivery, identify who will receive the shipment and how that person will obtain entry. For a consolidated shipment, the receiving plan must accommodate the agreed wider delivery window. If the destination permits moves only during particular hours, provide those restrictions before selecting the delivery arrangement.

For an NJ intrastate household move, the state consumer FAQ describes basic liability generally at $1 per pound per article, with limitations, including self-packed goods. This is not the same as replacement-value protection. Review the available higher protection, price and actual terms before the move, particularly for valuable belongings.

Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

At delivery, direct boxes and furniture to the intended rooms while there is room to work. Inspect the belongings and record any observed issue with the crew; retain the moving documents and follow the applicable claim process. Unwrapping furniture is part of delivery. Optional box unpacking and removal of packaging should already be included in the agreed scope if you want them completed then.

09 /

Choose dates around access and preparation

Begin with the dates on which you can legally enter and leave each property. Lease dates, a closing appointment and the actual handover of keys may differ. Add the building's allowed hours and the lead time for truck-space arrangements, then choose a move date that fits those constraints.

If you have flexibility, offer more than one date, including a mid-month or weekday alternative where practical. This creates options for scheduling; it is not a promise of lower prices or an available crew. For a summer move involving children, consider school and childcare arrangements alongside the packing work and where the family will stay that night.

For a winter move, assign responsibility for making the entrance, steps and carry route usable. For rain, agree where wet footwear and protective materials can be managed without obstructing the building. Recheck current city notices and property access before the move; an older street closure or seasonal announcement does not establish today's restriction.

10 /

Have a specific fallback for a delay

If keys are not available by the agreed decision time, the person responsible for the property should confirm whether access will be granted in time. The coordinator can then review a later delivery or an agreed storage stage before the truck is loaded for a destination it cannot enter. Confirm the place, receiving hours, capacity and charges. A warehouse phone number alone is not a storage booking.

If an elevator fails, establish whether another approved route is usable. Moving a few boxes by stairs does not prove that the largest furniture can follow. Review the revised handling and timing before proceeding. If there is no safe route, agree on a new access arrangement or date rather than improvising around the obstruction.

Keep responsibility clear: management approves building access, the customer or authorized representative confirms changes to the order, and the coordinator reviews the moving plan. Decide where people, pets, medicines and overnight essentials will go if belongings arrive later. Record what must be confirmed before work resumes and notify the receiving property of the revised plan.

Send the details you have; we will organize the next step

Send both addresses, preferred dates and any flexibility, an inventory, floors and access details, and the packing or storage help you want. Add photographs of large items, tight turns and the loading approach. Share any building instructions already available, including who manages elevator and insurance requests.

Household moves within New Jersey need a survey

You do not need every measurement before contacting us. The move-planning team will identify what needs further review. For an NJ intrastate household move, an item list starts that conversation; it does not replace the required on-site or video survey. The person preparing the estimate is not necessarily on the moving crew.

This requirement applies even to a small, straightforward household move within the state. We will arrange the on-site or virtual survey before the written estimate; sending photographs or an inventory is a first step, not a substitute.

General intake for other service requests

The general process below applies to other requests only where the rules for that service and route allow an estimate without a survey. For the New Jersey household moves described above, the survey remains required regardless of the item count.

Let the scope determine the survey

A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.

Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.

The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.

Before booking, review the shipment, services, price basis, payment method and access responsibilities together. Keep changes in writing so the plan used on moving day reflects what you actually need.

Questions before you move

Can I book a move entirely within Jersey City?

Yes. Sterling Oakbridge provides local household moving in Jersey City, including moves between apartments and homes. Send both addresses, the inventory and access details. A household move that stays within New Jersey follows the NJ survey and written-estimate process.

Does a one-day move need a separate Traffic & Engineering permit?

The city's sign-request form waives that attachment for a one-day move. This does not authorize a lane or sidewalk closure. If the operation would obstruct either, describe it to Traffic Engineering before relying on the sign-request exemption.

Can you help with a building COI and elevator booking?

Yes. We can coordinate the building's insurance paperwork and elevator arrangements. Send management's instructions, contact details and required dates. The property must still approve the documents and access; tell us about any deposit, fee or union-labor requirement so it can be addressed in the plan.

Can I send photographs instead of arranging a survey?

Photographs help us prepare. For an NJ intrastate household move, the estimate still requires an on-site or virtual survey. Show the belongings and the difficult parts of the handling route, including outside steps, landings, elevator access and the truck position.

Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?

Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.

Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?

Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.

Is a move from Jersey City to Manhattan considered local?

It crosses a state line and is an interstate move, even though the addresses may be close. We plan the shipment and documents accordingly, including access at the New York destination. Provide both buildings' moving rules before selecting the pickup and delivery schedule.

Does an hourly estimate cap the final bill?

No. Estimated hours help plan the work; the final charge follows the written hourly terms and work performed. Confirm minimum hours and separately charged items. If you want a binding arrangement, ask whether one can be offered for the specific shipment and review its written scope rather than assuming the estimate is a fixed total.

What if I cannot get access to the new apartment on time?

Contact the person who can confirm access and the moving coordinator before loading or dispatch commits the shipment to an unavailable destination. Review a revised delivery or specifically booked storage, its charges and the conditions for resuming. Keep overnight essentials with you and make a separate plan for the people who cannot enter the home.

What if a large sofa will not fit through the stairs?

Send its dimensions and photographs of the narrow points before the move. We can assess specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly where appropriate, or review another permitted route. Do not assume a window lift or crane is available: crane work is outside our service scope. Confirm a feasible method before committing to move the piece.
