Moving help for the rooms you are leaving and receiving

Sterling Oakbridge provides household and office moving in Trenton, with full or selected packing and additional work agreed for your shipment. We can help prepare the belongings, move the furniture and place it in the receiving rooms. Start with the result you need: a usable bedroom on arrival, a kitchen packed in stages, one person’s belongings separated from a shared house, or an office moved around an agreed work schedule.

Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.

This page covers Trenton city in Mercer County. Hamilton, Ewing and Lawrence are separate municipalities; a Trenton postal address can require a closer look at the actual jurisdiction. Send both complete street addresses and units, including any stop in Pennsylvania. The pickup municipality, building instructions and route belong in the same plan.

The city contains more than one housing pattern. The 2020–2024 Census estimates count 34,513 housing units, including 14,968 in attached single-unit homes, 5,588 in detached single-unit homes, 5,083 in two- to four-unit structures and 5,508 in structures with at least 20 units. These are units, not numbers of buildings or moving jobs. They support reviewing a rowhouse, a divided house and an apartment on their own terms.

You do not have to buy every service to get help with the difficult part. Tell us what you will prepare, what should remain in use and which pieces need the crew’s attention. The written scope can then identify the packing, furniture work, access coordination and receiving work included.

Follow the whole carrying path, including the front steps

In a brick rowhouse, the front door may sit above the sidewalk while the largest piece starts another floor up. Review the route in order: the room doorway, landing, stair turn, hall, front threshold, porch or stoop, steps and proposed truck position. At delivery, continue through the receiving entrance to the intended room. A wide living room does not establish clearance on the stair below it.

SettingWhat to show before the move
Attached house with a raised entranceThe full stair, handrails, upper landing, open door and turn into the hall; show the largest furniture in context.
One unit in a divided houseThe correct unit and floor, shared hall, actual stair and any basement or rear entrance included in the shipment.
Apartment in a converted buildingThe approved service entrance and every change of level. Exposed beams or an open living room do not prove elevator access.
Managed apartment or officeThe property’s crew, vehicle, elevator, protection and document instructions, together with the actual carrying route.

Send a continuous video or a short sequence of photographs rather than one close-up of the door. Include useful measurements for a tight opening and unusual furniture, but let the survey establish the preparation. Measurements cannot by themselves promise that a long rigid piece will make a turn.

We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.

The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

We can coordinate agreed building documents and elevator arrangements. The property still needs to accept the actual date, crew and vehicle where required. Keep that acceptance with the move plan so the crew arrives for the approved arrangement.

Agree a lawful working position and a usable time window

The nearest curb is useful only if the selected vehicle can lawfully work there for the required time. Send the posted signs, the side of the street, nearby driveways and the full entrance-to-curb connection. A space in a photograph can disappear before arrival; a resident’s permit does not reserve it for the truck.

Trenton’s traffic code treats residential permits, loading zones and restricted truck parking separately. Section 14-2.15 limits a residential or visitor permit to its issued purpose and authorized user or vehicle. Do not plan around borrowing someone else’s resident pass as general truck authorization. Under §14-3.19, designated loading zones have scheduled locations and hours; their permitted loading use is not an exclusive booking for the whole move.

There is also an overnight condition worth resolving before an early arrival or key delay. Section 14-2.13 restricts covered trucks over 6,000 pounds registered gross weight, and specified branded or equipped vehicles, on residential streets within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Its temporary service exception requires prompt Police Department notification and a legible windshield notice identifying the serviced property address. It does not reserve a bay or waive unrelated restrictions.

We can help with parking-permit coordination within the agreed scope. The City Traffic and Transportation Division, 609-989-3612, is the public owner for traffic and parking-permit questions. Confirm the arrangement for the actual street and vehicle, including any temporary restriction. Keep driveways, pedestrian movement and neighboring entrances available under that arrangement.

Choose a window that leaves time for the approved access, preparation and loading. If the receiving address becomes unavailable, tell the planning team promptly; an unattended street overnight is not the default storage plan.

Check the truck route before choosing a Delaware crossing

A short route on a passenger-car map can include a bridge unsuitable for the moving vehicle. Give the planning team both addresses, any intermediate stop and the proposed time window. The route review needs the chosen vehicle’s rating, dimensions and load conditions, along with current restrictions.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission’s current bridge-limit table lists Lower Trenton, the “Trenton Makes” bridge, at 5 tons with a posted 10-foot vertical clearance. Calhoun Street is listed at 3 tons with a posted 8-foot vertical clearance. The operator explicitly bases its weight restrictions on gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR. An empty truck is not automatically eligible because its actual load is light.

City bridges have separate rules. Trenton’s §14-4 lists the South Clinton Avenue bridge over AMTRAK at 15 tons gross load and the North Clinton Avenue “Old Stone” bridge over CONRAIL at 5 tons gross load. Those city provisions concern total vehicle and load; do not substitute that test for the river operator’s GVWR rule. Listed emergency or utility exceptions do not establish a moving-company exemption.

This is a reason to plan the route, not a request for you to choose a truck or certify a crossing. The moving plan should use a suitable route for the actual vehicle and current postings. Check dated construction alerts for the moving day rather than turning a temporary closure into an assumed permanent delay.

For a destination across the river, provide the Pennsylvania address at the outset. FMCSA explains interstate movement by the shipment’s route, rather than mileage alone. Applicable requirements and the company’s quoted service category need their own review; crossing a nearby state line does not by itself promise a particular price or delivery window.

Make ownership and destinations clear in a shared house

When only one household or one roommate is moving, label the shipment before packing begins. Walk through closets, basement storage, the porch and any shared room. Identify the landlord’s furniture and other occupants’ belongings, even if similar items sit beside the things leaving.

Use simple destination groups: new apartment, another named recipient, agreed storage and stays here. Keep personal documents, medication, keys, valuables and the essentials you are carrying yourself separate. A door label and a written inventory are more useful than expecting the crew to infer ownership from the room.

If several people will give instructions, name one person who can resolve a question at pickup and one authorized receiver at each destination. Decide who can approve a change to the written scope. An additional stop or newly added furniture needs review before it is loaded.

06 /

Pack in an order that leaves the home usable

Begin with what can leave daily use, then agree when to pack the kitchen, bedding and work equipment. Keep a small final-night and first-morning group out of the shipment until you are ready: medication, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, keys and the dishes you will still use. Identify it clearly so selected packing does not sweep it into ordinary cartons.

For fragile contents, show the actual open cabinets and storage during the review. The amount and type of contents determine the preparation, not just the number of cabinet doors. Books, dishes, framed items and mixed drawer contents need suitable containers and a plan for what stays together. Do not overfill a carton to reduce the count.

Labor, materials and optional work

Item or taskHow it is charged
Basic furniture disassembly and reassemblyPart of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee
Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tapeNo separate charge for these basic protection materials
Boxes supplied for your moveCharged separately
PackingCharged for working time; boxes are separate
Unwrapping furniturePart of delivery
Unpacking the contents of boxesOptional work, charged for working time
Packaging and waste removalCharged separately
Complex furniture and other specialist workIndividually quoted after review

Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.

If you pack ordinary contents yourself, agree what should be ready for the crew and which fragile or awkward groups they will handle. Mark the receiving room and any separate destination. Keep the approach to the work clear; cartons staged across the shared hall can interfere with both the move and other occupants.

At delivery, choose the result you want from unpacking. Opening cartons, placing contents, arranging cupboards and removing empty materials are distinct pieces of work. Include the requested work in the scope and identify the receiving storage so the crew can work in a useful sequence.

07 /

Prepare furniture according to its construction

Show large furniture from more than one side, including the back, feet, joins and any loose shelves or glass. A cabinet that looks like one piece may separate safely; another may have fixed joinery that should stay together. Tell the surveyor about repairs, unstable parts, wall attachment or a manufacturer’s instruction that affects handling.

Suitable preparation can reduce the carried size, protect vulnerable surfaces and keep hardware with the correct item. The decision needs to fit the actual piece and the route at both addresses. Avoid taking apart a fixed structure merely because the doorway looks narrow in a photograph.

Specialist services by individual quote

What needs attentionWork available for review
Complex furnitureBunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly
Heavy itemsPianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables
Art and collectionsFine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification
Hanging and installationPictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately
Business equipmentOffice furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route

Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use moving time without a separate basic-assembly surcharge. Show work beyond that basic scope early. Wall-mounted items, unusual furniture, mounting surfaces and a separate handyman task need their own agreement. A window exit or crane should never be assumed when an indoor route has not been established.

Tell us the final room for each large piece. Placement works best when the room and doorway are ready before unloading, with access to the position agreed for that item. If the intended room changes, review the new path before carrying the piece there.

Sequence an office move around access and restart

For a small office or business premises, divide the inventory into furniture, workstations, ordinary cartons and equipment needing separate handling instructions. Name the people who release each group and receive it. The building’s loading entrance, permitted hours, elevator and protection requirements should reach the planning team before the work window is confirmed.

After-hours or phased work can be reviewed for the job. A useful sequence might keep a small working area available until the final phase, then place the receiving desks and equipment in the order your team needs them. The schedule must account for actual access and labor; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted business operation.

Agreed IT disconnection can be reviewed as moving work. Your designated IT provider handles reconnection, testing and system startup. Label equipment and identify receiving workstations before the move so the IT team gets a usable layout. Do not treat delivery of a computer as confirmation that it is operational.

If you need a special records-handling, confidential-archive or regulated-material service, raise that requirement before including it in the shipment. Ordinary office moving does not by itself establish special custody, scanning, shredding or compliance procedures.

09 /

Review the contents and access before estimating the price

Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

A short distance can still involve several floors, a long carry or substantial packing. Show the complete inventory, both access routes, the building windows, intermediate stops and the receiving work requested. Identify an uncertain key release or a destination not yet ready. These details affect how the shipment should be planned and quoted.

For a household move within New Jersey, the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs requires an on-site or virtual survey of the goods before the written estimate, including small shipments. An initial list and photographs help begin the conversation; they do not replace that required review. The surveyor is not necessarily a member of the moving crew.

Local work is usually hourly under the company’s policy. Estimated or minimum hours do not establish a fixed total or a completion deadline. Long-distance flat pricing applies to the same agreed shipment and scope; adding contents, stops or services needs a revised agreement. A nearby Pennsylvania destination should be quoted on its actual route and work, rather than an assumed mileage rule.

Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Record the selected level, cost, limits and claims process in the moving documents. Show artwork and other high-value belongings early so declared values and special handling can be reviewed.

Valuation describes the mover’s liability and differs from a separate insurance policy. For an interstate household shipment, review the FMCSA explanation of Full Value Protection and Released Value with the requirements and written terms applicable to your actual move. Confirm the selection before the work begins.

Read the written estimate and service documents together. Check the included work, separately charged cartons, requested options and any unresolved access condition. Ask the planning team to clarify an omission before the moving day rather than relying on a caption, an online example or the size of the home.

10 /

Set the receiving plan before the truck is loaded

Confirm who has the keys, who can admit the crew and when the receiving rooms will be available. The person receiving the shipment should know the room labels, any items intended for another destination and the work included after unloading. A closing date alone does not establish the hour of usable access.

Direct and consolidated long-distance moving

Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.

If keys or property approval are uncertain, review the alternative before pickup. Depending on the actual circumstances and agreed scope, that might mean storage with accepted terms, a revised loading date while the origin remains available, or a separately agreed receiving arrangement. Identify the contact who can make the decision. Do not assume the crew, vehicle or street can wait indefinitely.

On arrival, point out the first rooms to prepare and the places to keep clear. A bedroom, essential cartons and the main walking route may matter more immediately than opening every box. Include unpacking or empty-material removal when that is part of the result you want.

11 /

Arrange unwanted furniture before handover

Decide what will travel, stay with permission or leave through an agreed removal route. Do this before packing so unwanted furniture does not occupy the truck or get mixed with a recipient’s belongings. Removal, donation transport and municipal pickup are different arrangements; confirm the actual service rather than marking every unwanted item “dispose.”

Trenton’s Solid Waste Management Division requires a special-pickup appointment for large furniture and appliances; its public number is 609-989-3175. The City’s 2026 collection flyer, page 2, limits large bulk pickup to five items at one time and requires mattresses to be bagged. Arrange the applicable date and preparation before the property handover. A household collection option does not automatically authorize a moving company’s commercial drop-off.

Keep the selected shipment separate from the pickup group, with the entrance and shared route clear. Follow the collector’s instructions for set-out and eligibility. If the City date does not fit the move, review another accepted arrangement before leaving the property.

After unpacking, ask for empty-material removal if you want it included. Retained cartons, used packing paper and other waste may follow different routes. Leave only the materials and work actually agreed with the crew or collector; completed delivery alone does not include a general property cleanout.

12 /

Send the details that make the move workable

Start with both full addresses and unit numbers, your date or date range, and a clear list of what is leaving. Include the floors, stairs or elevators, the open storage and any unusual furniture. Show the entrance-to-curb path and provide actual building instructions, with a contact for access questions.

Tell us the division of work you want: furniture moving, full or selected packing, agreed unpacking, furniture preparation, storage or an additional destination. Identify belongings staying behind and the essentials you will carry yourself. For a business move, include the work window and the people responsible for release, receiving and IT restart.

The planning team can then arrange the appropriate survey, review the vehicle route and coordinate the agreed access requirements. The written scope should leave you knowing what will happen at pickup, what should be ready at delivery and which decisions still need an answer before moving day.

13 /

Questions before you move

Can I book help with only part of my Trenton move?

Yes. Tell us which furniture or contents are moving and which work you want the crew to do. Selected packing, furniture moving and additional agreed services can be scoped around the rest of your preparation. Identify excluded belongings and separate destinations before the survey.

Does a Trenton mailing address establish the municipality?

No. This page covers Trenton city. Hamilton, Ewing and Lawrence are separate municipalities, and a postal name alone is insufficient. Send the complete street address and unit at both ends so the plan uses the correct public rules and property instructions.

What should I show for a rowhouse with front steps?

Show the furniture in its starting room, the whole indoor stair and turns, the open front doorway, landing, handrails, steps and route to the proposed truck position. Include useful measurements and known repairs or fixed joinery. The survey can then establish preparation for the actual path.

Can you coordinate an elevator or building documents?

Yes, within the agreed scope. Send the property’s actual instructions and contact so parking or elevator coordination and a building certificate of insurance or other agreed documents can be reviewed. The property must accept the relevant date, crew and vehicle; sending a document alone does not establish that acceptance.

Can the truck use my residential parking permit?

Do not assume so. Trenton limits residential and visitor permits to their issued purpose and authorized user or vehicle. A resident pass also does not reserve a curb position or override other traffic rules. Review the actual vehicle, street and working period with the planning team.

Can a residential street be used for an overnight truck wait?

Do not use that as the default plan. Trenton’s overnight restriction covers specified heavy, branded or equipped vehicles near occupied dwellings from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The temporary service exception has Police Department notification and property-address windshield-notice conditions. It does not create an indefinite parking or storage arrangement.

Does a loading zone give us the space for the whole move?

No exclusive space is established by a loading-zone sign. Trenton designates locations and hours for loading and unloading. Review the posted conditions, the selected vehicle and the full work duration; resolve a suitable lawful arrangement before dispatch if the job needs more than the available use allows.

Can a moving truck cross Trenton Makes or Calhoun Street?

The actual vehicle must be checked. The bridge operator lists Lower Trenton at 5 tons and 10 feet posted clearance, and Calhoun Street at 3 tons and 8 feet. Its weight test is GVWR. A passenger-car route or a lightly loaded truck does not establish eligibility; the planning team should choose a suitable current route.

Are the Clinton Avenue bridge limits the same as the river limits?

They use separate provisions. Trenton lists the South Clinton Avenue bridge over AMTRAK at 15 tons gross load and the North Clinton Avenue Old Stone bridge over CONRAIL at 5 tons gross load, meaning vehicle and load. The river operator uses GVWR. Apply the correct test to the actual bridge and vehicle.

Is a short move to Pennsylvania automatically priced as local work?

Distance alone does not decide the quoted service category. Give both complete addresses, intermediate stops, contents and access details. The shipment’s route and applicable requirements need review, while the company’s pricing model applies to the agreed work. Do not assume an hourly or flat total solely because the destination is nearby or across the state line.

Can you give a written NJ household-moving estimate from room count alone?

Room count alone is insufficient. For a household move within New Jersey, the state requires an on-site or virtual survey of the goods before the written estimate, including a small shipment. An initial list and access photographs help arrange that review. Show the contents, both paths and the requested work.

Are the quoted hours a guaranteed finishing time?

No. Estimated or minimum hours do not turn hourly work into a fixed total or a completion cap. The contents, preparation, access and receiving conditions affect the work. Read the agreed rate, minimum, included services and estimate together, and clarify changes with the planning team.

How do I separate my belongings from a shared household?

Identify the moving group room by room, including shared storage. Mark other occupants’ and the landlord’s belongings as excluded, name each destination and keep the items you carry yourself separate. Choose one person who can resolve ownership questions at pickup and an authorized receiver at each stop.

Can I keep the kitchen and bedroom usable until the last night?

Yes, plan the packing order around that need. Start with contents no longer in daily use and identify the final-night and first-morning essentials that stay out. Tell the crew which kitchen group, bedding and personal items are excluded until you release them, and keep that group clearly separate.

Are basic protective materials and company cartons charged alike?

No. Basic moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape do not carry a separate basic-material charge under the company’s policy. Company cartons are charged separately, and packing or unpacking work uses agreed work time. Include the requested contents and materials in the written scope.

Will a large cabinet always be taken apart?

No. Preparation depends on its actual construction, condition and route. Show joins, loose parts, glass and repairs during the survey. Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use moving time without a separate basic-assembly surcharge; unusual work or a mounting task needs its own review. Do not assume fixed joinery should be dismantled.

Does unpacking include arranging cupboards and removing every empty carton?

Those are separate pieces of work to agree. Opening a carton and placing contents does not automatically include final cupboard arrangement, customer-directed organizing or empty-material removal. Tell the planning team the receiving storage and the finished result you want so the scope and sequence are clear.

What happens if the receiving keys are delayed?

Tell the planning team before loading whenever possible. Review an accepted storage arrangement, a revised pickup while the origin remains available or another agreed receiving option. Confirm the decision and responsible contact in writing. Availability and price need review; the street or vehicle is not an automatic indefinite waiting place.

Can you move an office and restart its computers?

Office furniture, workstations and agreed equipment can be planned around an accepted access window, including phased or after-hours work where agreed. IT disconnection may be reviewed case by case. Your designated IT provider handles reconnection, testing and system startup. Schedule that receiving work before promising staff a restart time.

How should I handle furniture or mattresses I do not want to move?

Arrange the removal route before handover. Trenton requires a special-pickup appointment for large furniture and appliances at 609-989-3175; its 2026 flyer limits large bulk pickup to five items at one time and requires mattresses to be bagged. Follow actual eligibility and preparation instructions. A separate moving-company removal service must be agreed; municipal pickup is not a general commercial drop-off authorization.
