Philadelphia has a real instrument: the Streets Department's Temporary No Parking (TNP) permit, issued explicitly for moving trucks. The cost is $50 per 40 feet of space per day in Center City and University City, and $25 elsewhere; a moving container is $50 for up to five days. Apply with the address and the length you need, and confirm the permit is issued before the day.

Two adjacent rules: a residential parking permit is a separate program for personal cars and does nothing for a truck; and a permitted space still loses to a snow emergency or emergency work. Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

Locally, the practical cost drivers in Philadelphia are access and volume. A third-floor rowhouse walk-up takes longer than a ground-floor unit with a driveway at the door. A permitted curb position shortens every carry; a truck forced around the corner lengthens all of them. Packing level, furniture disassembly and any disposal or storage stage change the total as well. The estimate reflects the work you describe — accurate addresses, floors and inventory make it accurate.

For long-distance shipments, the agreed price holds while the shipment and service scope stay as agreed; changes to either reopen the price. The TNP permit fee is a city charge, separate from the moving estimate.

Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Philadelphia's winters are moderate by regional standards but real: a declared snow emergency changes street priorities, and a permitted curb position can still lose to one. In the final week: confirm the TNP permit is issued and the signs are up, confirm elevator and access windows at both buildings, finish packing except daily essentials, and set aside documents, medications and chargers that travel with you. Walk the route the crew will take — from the truck position to the entrance and up to the room — and remove what blocks it: cars from the driveway, mats from the stoop, snow and ice from the steps.

Anything you are not taking needs a plan before the truck arrives: Philadelphia picks up bulky household items by scheduled special collection — furniture, appliances with doors removed — so book it before move-out week; a curb pile on moving day is not an option.
