New York / City relocation guide
A practical guide to moving to Chappaqua, New York
Choose a home by the daily routine and property systems you will actually use. Check the address behind the Chappaqua name, then connect possession, accounts, school plans and transport before arrival.

01 /
Choose the address behind the Chappaqua name
Start by separating the place you are comparing from the authorities that serve the property. The map below outlines Chappaqua CDP, Census GEOID 3613805. It does not outline all of New Castle or the full Chappaqua postal area. The Town’s planning site describes New Castle as a larger northern Westchester community with two hamlets. Do not use its town-wide population or facilities as CDP-only statistics.
For each candidate home, record the full address, unit and parcel reference; confirm the municipality, school district, utility connections and the road owner separately. New Castle’s Assessor maintains Town tax maps and property records. A listing’s place name, school marketing or map pin is a starting point for those checks. Keep the replies with the property documents so the same verified address follows through registration, billing and your moving estimate.

Test the lifestyle you expect to have
Decide what is bringing you to Chappaqua: a rail commute, more usable rooms, a different daily pace, proximity to family or a home that works as needs change. Translate that motive into a normal weekday. Test the home-to-station trip, school or childcare handoff, groceries and the return after dark at the times you expect to use them.
A station-area location may put more of the daily route within walking distance, but the exact crossing, grade and sidewalk matter. A property farther from the center may suit your space needs while requiring more driving and maintenance. Compare the practical routine rather than assuming every Chappaqua address offers the same walk, commute or services. For someone with limited stair tolerance, inspect internal level changes and the location of the main bedroom and bathroom before concentrating on floor area.
04 /
Compare usable rooms, records and ongoing costs
Tour the house with the furniture and people who will use it in mind. Check room dimensions, stair turns, storage, workspace privacy, lighting and circulation. Look at basement dampness, drainage, the driveway and exterior steps with the appropriate inspector. An attractive extra room is less useful if a desk or bed cannot reach it or if permitted use is unresolved.
The Building Division lists permits for additions, alterations and other work, plus completion and occupancy documents. Ask about records for the specific finished basement, addition or converted space you intend to use; this guide does not establish its approval. If renting, confirm the lease, owner responsibilities, maintenance contact, utility charges, permitted occupants and the property’s move instructions.
Build a household budget beyond the advertised price: actual tax records, insurance quotes, heating fuel, electric use, water or private-system maintenance, refuse options, parking, commuting and repairs. Request recent bills and service records for the property. The seller’s expenditure and your future usage can differ, so keep estimates distinct from confirmed recurring charges.

05 /
Time the complete rail journey
MTA’s Chappaqua station page places the station on the Metro-North Harlem Line and identifies accessible facilities including elevators. Use TrainTime and current service notices for the train you need. The station description does not establish that an elevator is working on your travel day or that every proposed connection fits your schedule.
Measure the complete journey from your front door to your destination: walking or driving to the station, finding a legal place to park, reaching the platform, the selected train, and travel after the arrival station. Repeat it for the evening return and the days you work later. Keep a fallback for service disruption or an unavailable car.
The station page links to Bee-Line connections. Check the current operator route and stop information before depending on a bus for school, shopping or the station. A station’s transit link is not proof of a frequent bus at your home. No fixed door-to-door commute time is promised here.

06 /
Set up commuter parking before the first workday
New Castle’s parking page gives a June 15, 2026–June 14, 2027 permit year. During the enforced weekday period, non-permit parking is limited to specifically signed spaces in Lot D; Lots A, B and C require permits. Look for the actual space sign rather than assuming any metered-looking space accepts a non-permit car.
The detailed permit and rules page distinguishes resident, non-resident, metered, senior and merchant applications. Electronic applications can take up to three business days to process, and the permit is not valid until payment is processed. It requires current license and registration cards for the listed vehicles. Check the correct category and current fee before applying; a Chappaqua postal address does not answer Town residency for you.
The detailed page also describes free weekends, specified holidays and evening hours, while overnight use has separate designated-area and valid-permit conditions. Read those current conditions for your date. Commuter privileges do not reserve a moving vehicle’s loading place.
07 /
Confirm eligibility and the actual start plan
Chappaqua Central School District’s registrar page says the child and parent or guardian must reside in the district. It provides an electronic registration process, separate instructions for new and existing families, and an option to obtain assistance in person. Select the correct school year and application; existing families use their Infinite Campus account.
Give the registrar the full proposed address, move date and your household situation before relying on a listing’s school label. Ask which school the child would attend and what must be complete before the first day. The page groups residency and household documents separately from medical and educational documents, which must be supplied before attendance. Obtain the current detailed checklist from the registrar instead of using an old paper form found in search.
Registration help is available at 914-238-7200 extension 10007 or registrar@chappaquaschools.org. Discuss transfer records, medical documentation, transport and any support needs with the relevant district contact. A submitted application, pending home purchase or nearby school building does not itself establish enrollment or assignment.
08 /
Identify each connection and account owner
Ask the seller or landlord which services are connected: electricity, heating fuel, water, sewer or septic, internet and any alarm or access system. Obtain provider names, account responsibility, meter locations and service dates. A neighboring home’s connection cannot establish the system at your property.
Con Edison’s service-management page provides start, move, stop and account-owner choices. Its moving workflow asks for both addresses and dates and limits the online move-in date to no more than 30 days ahead. Use the exact address to verify eligibility and the right procedure; the company’s Westchester territory does not mean every home has its gas connection. For business accounts the page directs customers to call.
Confirm activation with the responsible provider before the receiving day. Ask how heating is supplied and serviced, and whether a fuel delivery or account transfer is needed. For internet, check service at the unit and arrange equipment or installation dates. A booking request is different from working heat, water or connectivity in the home.
09 /
Carry water and wastewater information through the handover
The Town Water Unit directs final meter reads and water billing questions to 914-238-3968. Its distribution FAQ says a moving household should arrange a final reading; it lists quarterly billing and landlord responsibility for a tenant’s water bill. Ask the billing unit how those conditions apply to the account and coordinate the final reading with the outgoing owner.
Confirm whether the property is actually connected to that public water system, a different provider or a private well. Separately establish whether wastewater goes to sewer or septic. Request the sewer account or septic location, inspection and maintenance records from the owner, then verify questions with the relevant department or qualified inspector. Public water is not proof of sewer service. The Town Water Unit’s link to septic information is useful direction, not evidence that a particular home has a septic tank.
Record who pays, who reports a fault and where shutoffs and meters can be reached. Renters should clarify charges in the lease even when the provider’s account remains the owner’s responsibility.
10 /
Choose a disposal route for each material
New Castle’s refuse instructions describe weekly street collection, household garbage out by 7 a.m. on collection day and no overnight curbside placement. Use the current street-specific calendar and holiday changes rather than copying a neighbor’s day. Confirm eligibility and arrangements for the property; managed buildings may have their own container location and instructions.
Before move-out, separate usable furniture, bulky unwanted items, packing materials and renovation debris. The Town page directs paid special-pickup arrangements for bulky household items and construction debris to SaniPro at 800-273-9394. These items should not be assumed to fit normal collection.
Curbside recycling rules require broken-down cardboard no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet and loose unbagged container recyclables. They list exclusions including plastic bags, Styrofoam and ceramics. Identify the actual material when asking where it goes: a clean carton, cushioning foam and a drinking glass are different streams. Keep cartons dry and clear of the walking route until the agreed collection or removal.
11 /
Make the home workable beyond moving day
For everyday access, test the ordinary route with groceries, a stroller or mobility equipment as appropriate to your household. Check handrails, thresholds, door swing, internal level changes and the route to the main rooms. Consider where deliveries can be received without blocking a shared entrance. Ask who clears snow and maintains steps and lighting.
For an apartment, condominium or rental, obtain the manager’s written instructions for deliveries, use of common space, elevator booking, visitor access and moving work. Verify which parts you are responsible for and who can authorize exceptions. For the shipment itself, the Chappaqua moving page covers inventory, packing, carrying routes and coordinated delivery. Keep household setup and the actual move scope connected without assuming one permission covers both.
12 /
Plan the vehicle route separately from commuting
NYSDOT’s parkway restrictions guidance excludes commercial vehicles from state parkways. Your passenger-car trip can therefore be unsuitable for a moving truck. Send the final street address and access information to the moving team and have the commercial route reviewed, including restrictions and the last approach.
For the standing place, check private permission, ground condition, turning space and exit. If loading would use public space, identify the responsible road authority and ask about the exact vehicle, duration and date. New Castle’s Highway Unit says it does not maintain state and county roads. Ask the appropriate owner rather than assuming a Town-road contact covers every approach. A commuter permit, a neighbor’s parking habit and a large map outline do not establish loading permission.
13 /
Check the property in the conditions you will use it
Inspect drainage and the lower rooms after wet weather when possible, and ask about prior water entry and repairs. Use FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center to search the exact address for the current official flood information. A CDP outline and a hill in the neighborhood do not establish the parcel’s flood status or insurance requirements. Discuss property-specific concerns with the inspector and insurance provider.
For winter, establish who clears the driveway, steps and walkway and how that work is arranged when you are away. Keep the receiving route safe and the essential systems working before delivery. Check current Town weather notices and signs for parking restrictions when a storm is forecast. Archived storm dates or past overnight notices should not be treated as the coming season’s schedule.
For a home left empty between visits, arrange a responsible local contact, essential maintenance and provider procedures. Decide what travels now and what will remain; an unattended property needs a receiving plan as well as a list of furniture.

14 /
Build a routine outside the house
Chappaqua Library’s card page connects eligibility to living, working, attending school or owning property in the Chappaqua School District. It offers online registration or an in-person visit with photo identification and proof of address; caregivers are asked to bring children for in-person registration. Verify the applicable situation before applying. Library eligibility and municipal residence are separate checks.
The library website provides current events, borrowing and service information. Use it to find a practical first visit or activity that fits your household; programs can require registration. Test your normal grocery, pharmacy and other essential errands from the actual home, including opening times and delivery options, instead of assuming the station-area shops cover every need.
New Castle’s parks page lists facility information and group-use permit requirements. Town facilities extend beyond the CDP; check the destination, current program eligibility and reservation conditions before planning organized use. A family walk and a reserved group event require different arrangements.

15 /
Make the first week manageable
Before possession, keep a compact address file: property contacts and keys, utilities and activation dates, school correspondence, commuter parking status, disposal schedule and the agreed shipment scope. Bring first-night essentials yourself. Confirm the receiving person, lighting and clear walking route before the load is dispatched.
On arrival, check the condition of the home and essential services, retain the handover and moving documents and report problems through the appropriate owner. Register for local updates and establish the maintenance contact. New Castle Police’s contact page lists 911 for emergencies and 914-238-4422 for non-emergency matters requiring police attention; those numbers are not a promise of a loading reservation.
During the first week, test the commute, resolve missing account transfers, finish school follow-ups and choose an unpacking sequence that leaves essential rooms usable. If something remains unconfirmed, keep it as an open task with its responsible contact instead of letting a submitted form stand in for the result.

Questions before you arrive
Is Chappaqua the same as New Castle?
The Chappaqua CDP is a Census place inside the wider Town of New Castle. A postal address, Town boundary and school district answer different questions. Confirm the authorities and service connections for the specific property.
Can I assume the school from a listing?
Give the full address and household situation to the registrar, then confirm residency, assignment, required documents and the start plan. An application or pending purchase alone is not enrollment.
Is every station space open to visitors?
The Town distinguishes permit areas and specifically signed non-permit spaces in Lot D during enforcement. Check current signs, the permit category and payment status; overnight parking has separate conditions.
Will public water mean the home has sewer?
Check the water and wastewater connections separately. Request provider, account and maintenance records for the actual property. A public-water connection does not identify the wastewater system.
How should I compare the commute?
Time the journey from the home through parking or walking, platform access, the selected train and the final destination. Test the evening return and a fallback; no fixed home-to-work duration is established here.
Can I leave unwanted furniture with ordinary garbage?
The Town directs special paid arrangements for bulky household items not normally collected. Check the street schedule, exact materials and collection method before putting anything out.
