Establish the building's actual collection arrangement, regular day, set-out point and bin storage with the property contact. The City's 2026 collection calendar and newsletter explains the residential program and commercial opt-in arrangements, including some larger multifamily and mixed-use buildings. Building size alone is not proof of which contract a particular property uses.
For ordinary City-program collection, the weekly limit is six containers or bags, each no larger than 32 gallons and no heavier than 30 pounds. One oversized item substitutes for two containers, leaving four that week. Set out after 6 p.m. the evening before and by 5 a.m. on collection day, then remove containers by 8 p.m. Store them in the agreed side or rear location rather than leave them in front or on the porch. Check the dated calendar and current notices for holiday or weather changes.
The City collection page lists furniture, sofas and a mattress-and-box-spring set among oversized items, subject to the lifting limit. It treats large appliances separately: the monthly white-goods program requires a $15 tag from Treasury at 39 W. Chestnut Street. The 2026 calendar normally uses the third Friday, with a June exception. Have the hotline confirm the actual item, preparation and accepted date if the remaining collection opportunities do not fit the move.
Flatten empty moving cartons and separate materials appropriately. The City Recycling Drop-Off Center at 850 New Holland Avenue accepts corrugated cardboard and sorted paper. Its dedicated page and 2026 newsletter list weekdays 7 a.m.–4 p.m. and the third Saturday 7–11 a.m.; the general waste page lists an earlier weekday close. Use 717-291-4744 to resolve the intended visit before loading a late trip. The general page's 2025 quarterly rate is not a verified current charge.
Electronics and household hazardous waste need a different destination. LCSWMA's HHW facility, 1299 Harrisburg Pike, serves Lancaster County residents and excludes businesses. It lists accepted electronics with a ten-item daily limit and free resident HHW delivery; not every electrical appliance qualifies. Microwaves, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners are among the exclusions from HHW. Read the exact item list, keep batteries out of ordinary trash and recycling, and remove personal data from electronics before drop-off.
Yard waste belongs in paper bags or allowed bundles on the green-marked collection dates, not in mixed trash. The newsletter gives a 30-pound limit and four-foot bundle length, and directs residents to separate winter disposal options. Do not push leaves from a private yard into the street. For a missed pickup, call the Solid Waste Hotline; do not assume the next day is automatically an extra collection.
