New York / City relocation guide

A practical guide to moving to Peru, New York

Choose a property by how it supports your actual week. Check the address, household costs, school arrangements, journey and essential services before setting the move date.

01 /

Use the right Peru and the right boundary

The Census TIGER/Line place record identifies Peru CDP, GEOID 3657364, in New York. The Town of Peru identifies the local community in Clinton County and its hamlet resources. This guide and map use the census-designated place for orientation; the surrounding town is a different geographic object. A Peru mailing address or ZIP 12972 does not establish that a property lies inside the CDP.

Write down the full street address, unit, parcel reference where available, and owner or landlord. Confirm municipal jurisdiction with the town, school enrollment with the district and utility service with the responsible supplier. The map is a boundary reference, not a property survey, school assignment, flood map or truck route.

Compare the property with the life you plan

Visit the home at a useful time of day and trace the route to work, school, shopping and care. Compare a rental or purchase by recurring cost and usable space, not just the advertised number of rooms. List the furniture you intend to retain, workspace needs, parking, pets and anyone who needs step-free access.

For a rental, have the lease identify utilities, waste service, maintenance, parking and responsibility for snow or grounds. For a purchase, request condition and maintenance information and arrange the appropriate inspections. Confirm which fixtures and appliances stay. These are checks for the specific property, not claims that all Peru homes share an age or condition.

04 /

Build a household budget beyond the move

Put rent or mortgage, property-related charges, insurance, heating, electricity, water and sewer where applicable, internet, transport and waste into separate lines. Ask for recent bills and the period they cover rather than guessing usage from a photograph. Identify deposits, activation work, repairs and move charges that fall due before the first month settles down.

Ask the town assessor or Clinton County Real Property Office about the property record and the relevant assessment documents. Current ownership, exemptions and your future bill require their own checks. Keep a reserve for a delayed handover or an essential repair.

05 /

Check condition, alterations and lawful occupancy

Walk through the roof, drainage, basement or crawlspace if present, heating, electrical system and other systems with the appropriate professionals. Look at the entrance you will use every day, including lighting, threshold and surfaces in wet or icy weather. Furniture clearance is a separate measurement from structural condition.

The Town Code Enforcement Office advises on building, zoning and subdivision questions. Its published procedure calls for plan review before permits are issued and inspections before a Certificate of Occupancy after permitted work. Discuss your proposed alterations or change of use before starting work; do not read this as a requirement for a new permit on every ordinary move into an existing home.

06 /

Establish the actual water and sewer arrangements

The Town Water/Sewer Department publishes billing access, hookup forms and a contact at 518-643-8125. The 2024 water-district report describes a public supply serving multiple districts and an out-of-district area. That service scope is different from the CDP boundary and does not confirm a connection at an unknown address.

Ask the owner and department whether the specific property has public water and sewer, what accounts or readings must transfer, and whether any hookup work is needed. If it uses a private well or septic system, obtain the relevant records and arrange qualified checks. The historical report is not a current property test or a guarantee about private plumbing.

07 /

Use the address for drainage and flood questions

Inspect where roof runoff and surface water go, and ask for any known water entry, repairs and drainage agreements. Use the full address with the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and ask the responsible local office about the map and requirements that apply. Consider insurance needs with your provider before committing to the property.

This guide has not run a parcel-specific flood search. Neither the CDP map nor proximity to a trail or river determines the risk, insurability or required protection of an individual building.

08 /

Start school registration before the move date

The Peru Central School District registration page lists two proofs of residency, a birth certificate, parent or guardian ID, the registration packet, relevant custody documents and current medical, physical and immunization records. Online pre-registration begins the process; the page says only the birth certificate can be uploaded there and other documents are needed at the meeting.

Contact the registrar at 518-643-6011 with the exact address, grade, intended start and any records or support needs. The linked district packet asks families unable to email the materials to arrange an appointment before arrival. Published hours differ between the page and packet, so confirm an appointment rather than relying on a walk-in time. The packet also explains immediate enrollment support for children not in permanent housing through the district liaison. Ask for that help if relevant; do not delay contact because usual documents are missing.

09 /

Confirm the school journey separately

School registration does not by itself settle the pickup point or first bus day. Use the district transportation page and the transportation procedures to discuss the address, grade, arrival date and any permitted alternate arrangements. Agree which adult receives a younger child and how a changed plan is communicated.

Confirm the current school placement and transport with the district. The CDP boundary and a property listing cannot assign a school, bus route or start time.

10 /

Test the full journey, including the return

For driving, test your actual destinations at the times you expect to travel, find authorized parking and plan a backup when a vehicle is unavailable. Do not convert straight-line distance or a regional moving-services link into a commute time.

Clinton County Public Transit describes regular-route deviations and Rural Zone/Dial-A-Ride service, with dispatch at 518-561-1452. Its current fare page lists Rural Zone at $10 and a covered-fare arrangement for eligible seniors who complete the required process. The linked rural-service map says $10 each way and advance booking. Confirm your address, service day, destination, return pickup, accessibility, fare and holiday changes with dispatch. Older linked material may differ; do not plan from the historic Peru route in a 2011 study.

Check walking access to the actual pickup point and what you can carry. The published grocery guidance requires belongings to stay clear of the aisle and emergency exits. A shopping trip and a daily work shift may need different arrangements.

11 /

Check parking and maintenance responsibilities

For the home itself, confirm who may use each parking space, visitor access, restrictions in a lease or association rules, and who clears the area in winter. Test how your own vehicles enter and leave without relying on the delivery-truck plan. Ask about shared driveways, gates and any maintenance agreement that affects regular access.

If public space is involved, identify the responsible town, county or state road owner and verify current signs and instructions for the proposed use. The town department directory provides a starting highway contact. This guide has not established a blanket parking exemption or a moving-truck permit process for every road.

12 /

Prepare power, heat and connectivity by address

Ask the owner for each supplier, account responsibility, fuel type and any equipment that requires service before occupancy. Confirm start dates and meter readings, and keep heat and essential power available during a winter handover. Where the home relies on a delivered fuel, clarify tank ownership, current level and delivery access.

For internet, use the exact unit with providers to confirm orderability, installation lead time, equipment and performance suited to your work. Test mobile coverage where you will use it and plan a temporary connection. No unknown property is assigned an electric, gas or broadband supplier here.

13 /

Make the first week work without a full unpack

Map the grocery, pharmacy, healthcare, work and household errands you actually need, then check current hours, appointment availability and whether providers can accept you. Arrange prescription and medical-record transfers directly with the relevant professionals. Keep a small list of urgent contacts accessible with your own documents.

The Peru Free Library is at 3024 N Main Street, with contact 518-643-8618. Its services page lists borrowing, public computers and Wi-Fi, plus printing, copying and faxing for a small fee. Ask about membership, current hours and the service you need. Public Wi-Fi can help with an occasional task; it does not replace confirming your home connection.

14 /

Separate household service from drop-off disposal

Have the landlord or owner identify household collection, account responsibility, collection day and container placement for your address. A county drop-off list does not establish curbside pickup. Sort reusable items and disposal materials before move day, and agree any company waste-removal service separately.

The county brochure, effective January 1, 2026 lists the Peru drop-off at 526 Barney Downs Road, 518-643-2127, Tuesday and Saturday 1–4 p.m. It separates accepted recyclable categories and says electronics are accepted only at the county landfill and Mooers Transfer Station. Confirm your material, preparation, current hours, fees and vehicle requirements before loading. The county web page contains conflicting general exclusions; use the facility contact for an item-specific answer instead of assuming that everything can go to Peru.

The county recycling page directs residents to remove contamination and flatten cardboard. Keep material-specific rules separate from donation acceptance and from any charge for company packaging removal.

15 /

Try the local resources you expect to use

The town website describes the Little Ausable River Trail from Heyworth/Mason Park off Mason Hill Road to Sullivan Park on Route 22, and links trail rules. Visit the route and review the current conditions and rules for the activity you have in mind. A recreational path is not a substitute for checking your daily walking commute or an accessible entrance.

Use the town recreation contacts for programs, dates and registration. Confirm suitability and places before shaping childcare or weekly routines around a program. Published resources can support your choice of address without inventing residential districts.

16 /

Prepare the property for a weather-sensitive arrival

Before a winter delivery, assign responsibility for clearing the authorized standing place, steps and carrying route. Check lighting, traction, drainage and heat at the receiving property. Ask who will be available if weather changes the handover time. Keep essential travel and overnight supplies outside the shipment.

For a public-road arrangement, verify current signs and instructions with the responsible road owner; the Town Highway Department can help identify town-road responsibilities. This guide has not established a town-wide moving permit or parking exception. Reassess actual conditions and the delivery plan rather than treating a seasonal illustration as a forecast.

17 /

Fit the plan to your reason for moving

A family move may put school records and transport first. Remote work depends on a tested connection, workspace and backup. Downsizing calls for decisions about retained furniture and disposal before packing. If accessibility or regular care matters, check the full route into the home and the actual appointments and journeys needed.

For a business or home-based activity, discuss the proposed use with code enforcement and set up your operational requirements separately. None of these motives is inferred from Census statistics or claimed as a pattern of company customers.

18 /

Use a short arrival sequence

Before handover:
  • Confirm keys, contacts, accounts and essential systems.
  • Resolve school appointments and passenger journeys.
  • Agree truck access, carry route and a delayed-key plan.
On arrival:
  • Record the property condition and meter readings as appropriate.
  • Make beds, bathroom, food and essential documents usable first.
  • Keep exits and the daily route clear while unpacking.
During the first week:
  • Check that services started and records reached their owners.
  • Test the real weekly journeys and adjust the backup plan.
  • Confirm disposal arrangements before taking remaining materials anywhere.

Use the Peru moving-services page for the shipment and estimate, then keep this guide for address and household preparation.

Questions before you arrive

Is the CDP the whole Town of Peru?

No. The Census place GEOID 3657364 is Peru CDP. Town jurisdiction, postal geography, school district and utility districts have separate boundaries.

Does a Peru mailing address confirm public water and sewer?

Confirm connections and accounts with the owner and Town Water/Sewer Department. A mailing address and the CDP map do not establish service at a particular property.

What should I do before school registration?

Contact the registrar with the exact address, grade and start date. Review the district documents and appointment process; online pre-registration is a beginning, not the whole enrollment process.

What if my child is not in permanent housing?

The district registration packet explains immediate enrollment and assistance through its liaison for children not in permanent housing. Contact the registrar promptly rather than waiting for ordinary residency documents.

Can Rural Zone serve my work commute?

Ask dispatch about your address, service days, destination, earliest arrival and last return. Advance booking and a listed destination do not establish that your work shift fits the service.

May I take electronics to the Peru drop-off?

The 2026 county brochure directs electronics to the county landfill or Mooers Transfer Station. Call the facility to confirm the exact item, eligibility, hours and any fee before travelling.

Can the map establish flood risk or truck access?

It depicts only the CDP boundary. Use the exact property with FEMA and local officials for risk, and the road owner and moving team for delivery access.

Which home internet company should I use?

Confirm orderability and installation for the exact unit with providers, then test the connection required for your work. This guide does not assign a supplier to an unknown address.
