Maine / City relocation guide

Moving to Scarborough

A move to Scarborough might put you nearer family, give you space to work or make a regular beach walk possible. Test those reasons against the particular home and the routines you would follow there.

Start with the decision in front of you

If you are still comparing homes, begin with housing, transport and the places below. If you have an address, move on to school registration, utilities and collection. When the handover date is close, use the access and arrival sections.

Keep a short list of what you want the move to improve. That could be a shorter trip to work, room for a relative, space for a hobby or fewer maintenance tasks. Take the list on a second visit and try an ordinary day rather than judging the town only on a weekend outing.

02 /

Locate the address within the town

Scarborough is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, with its own municipal government. The map uses its Census county-subdivision boundary; a postal address, school assignment and utility connection require their own checks. Use the specific property address when asking a local office which procedure applies.

Use Route 1, The Downs and the named beach destinations to organize a visit, then follow the roads you would actually use. A short distance on the map does not tell you how easy a crossing, entrance or return journey will be. The area notes below are starting points for those visits, not an exhaustive division of the town.

Find the area that fits your routine

Use these places to organize visits and compare your routines. The notes identify documented destinations without ranking neighborhoods or treating their names as service boundaries.

The Downs

The town describes a 525-acre development project in its geographic center, with a planned downtown component.

Look beyond the room count

The 2024 five-year ACS profile estimates about 77% of occupied homes are owner-occupied and about 79% of housing units are single-unit structures. These are town-wide survey figures, not a description of every street or a current listing inventory. Compare actual available homes and their obligations rather than reading a town average as a promise about an address.

Walk the entrance and internal changes of level with your household in mind. Consider groceries, a stroller, a bicycle, a mobility aid or a visitor staying overnight. A useful room at the foot of a narrow stair may need a different furniture plan from the same-sized room beside the entrance.

Include the garage and workshop in the comparison. Check what can be stored there, whether access remains usable with a vehicle inside and which fixtures or equipment stay. Ask about maintenance records, drainage, heating and any shared-drive responsibilities. For a property near water, review the address-specific flood and storm information with the relevant professionals.

Put running costs beside the rent or purchase price: property or association charges, heating, household services, internet and exterior maintenance. For new construction, establish the actual completion and possession conditions before fixing delivery appointments.

Try the whole journey

As checked on September 29, 2026, Greater Portland METRO schedules Route 25 to launch on October 4 between Exit 42 Park and Ride and downtown Portland, through The Downs and Route 1. Confirm its operating schedule before relying on a particular trip.

METRO also describes connections through Gallery Boulevard using Routes 24A/24B and Metro Connect. Check the service zone, operating hours and return connection for your address. A nearby destination on a route map is not enough if you cannot reach the stop comfortably or get home at the time you need.

For a drive, try the journey at the hour you expect to travel and include parking at the destination. For a mixed drive-and-bus commute, include the first leg and the transfer. If you work from home, test internet availability and the errands you still need to make during the week. Different households can reach different conclusions about the same location.

Begin enrollment before the move is finished

The district’s registration page provides the online New Student Enrollment Form and school contacts. It lists Blue Point, Eight Corners and Pleasant Hill primary schools, followed by Wentworth, the middle school and the high school. Confirm the school and any transport arrangement for the actual address with the district.

For the 2026–27 kindergarten cycle, the page specifies age five by October 15, 2026 and a paperwork appointment that includes residency notarization. Other grades have their own contacts and enrollment steps. Use the current instructions for your child’s entry year rather than treating this year’s dates as permanent.

Tell the school if your handover date is uncertain, and ask which documents can be prepared before possession. Keep school records and any information the receiving staff requests accessible during the move. Check the daily travel and after-school arrangements while you still have time to organize them.

07 /

Confirm the systems serving this property

Ask the seller, landlord or manager for the actual providers and account arrangements. Establish who pays each bill, which services need a new account and when access is needed for an appointment. Keep the start-date confirmations with your handover documents.

Portland Water District’s service form includes Scarborough; that does not establish a connection at every address. The town also has a Sanitary District. Confirm water supply and wastewater separately. If the property uses a private well or septic system, obtain its records and understand the maintenance responsibilities.

Unitil lists Scarborough for natural gas. Availability still needs an address check. Confirm the electricity provider, heating equipment and fuel arrangement as well. For internet, verify the exact premises and installation timing, especially if your first workday follows delivery closely.

In a managed building, distinguish services included in rent or association charges from accounts you open yourself. If possession shifts, update the appointments so a technician does not arrive before someone can provide access.

08 /

Separate collection from a house clearance

The town’s household-waste instructions say carts should be out by 7 a.m. Since July 1, 2026, Garbage to Garden has handled the contracted trash and recycling service with the existing routes and days. The page also describes optional curbside composting and a public compost bin at Public Works, 20 Washington Avenue.

Use the street list to establish your pickup day and read holiday or storm updates. Ask the property manager how collection works if bins or storage areas are shared. Keep enough space around carts for collection and avoid blocking the moving route.

For furniture, appliances or a large clear-out, use the town’s separate bulky-waste guidance. It lists Casella at 594 County Road in Westbrook and Riverside Recycling at 910 Riverside Street in Portland, with fees for bulky waste. Call the facility with the actual items before travelling. Do not treat the ordinary cart schedule as a booking for their removal.

Arrange donation, sale or disposal while there is time to complete it. After delivery, flatten cartons for the appropriate recycling arrangement and agree any moving-company packaging removal separately.

09 /

Check the vehicle, location and time together

The Traffic Ordinance, sections 1 and 25 distinguishes active loading from parking. It restricts vehicles over 23 feet on residentially zoned public ways, with specified delivery and loading exceptions. Other location-specific rules still need review.

The general overnight restriction is 2–6 a.m. Designated spaces on Scarborough Downs Road, Frontrunner Road, Pacer Way and Hackamore Avenue have a stated exception. Emergency bans and street-specific restrictions also appear in the ordinance; check the current arrangement with Scarborough Police for the intended vehicle and address.

Record where the vehicle may stand, who controls that space and any time limit. Check the route into it as well as the space itself. If an association or landlord manages the property, obtain its instructions and pass them to the move planner. A visitor parking arrangement does not by itself settle commercial loading access.

10 /

Test how the home will work on arrival

Walk from the likely stopping place to the rooms you need first. Check thresholds, lighting, handrails and the turns that a larger item must negotiate. If step-free access matters to your household, follow the entire route rather than stopping at a level front path.

At a property with a cellar, look at both the internal stairs and any external bulkhead. Measure the usable openings and landings instead of assuming one route is better. Ask the mover to review unusual weight or dimensions before arranging delivery.

For a rental, obtain the owner’s instructions on common areas, protection and any fixture changes. For an unoccupied property, confirm who will open it and check essential services before arrival. A spare entrance is only a useful alternative when access, permission and dimensions have all been established.

11 /

Make room for the routines you want

The town beach page covers Ferry, Higgins and Pine Point/Hurd Park. Town-lot season passes are obtained in person with vehicle documentation; they do not cover Scarborough Beach State Park. Review the current season’s rules before a visit.

For dog walks, the town beaches have seasonal hours: from May 15 through Labor Day, dogs are excluded from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with different rules at other times. Check the current rules and protected areas for the particular walk.

Try the ordinary destinations too: food shopping, a pharmacy, the library, recreation or a place to meet someone. Visit at the hours you would actually use them. Someone returning late from work may value an evening errand more than proximity to a destination that closes early.

Keep your own reasons for moving in the comparison. Space for visiting family, easier access to a hobby and a comfortable home-working routine can matter even when they never appear in a moving checklist.

12 /

Plan for the home between visits

For winter, arrange clearing and treatment from the vehicle position to the entrance. Scarborough’s snow provisions prohibit obstructing plowing and require snow placed temporarily on a public street during private clearing to be removed immediately. Agree where cleared snow can go while preserving the working route.

A wet-weather visit can reveal a different approach from a sunny showing. Look at drainage, slippery steps and the route from outside storage. Ask who maintains shared surfaces and who will check the property if it is empty before you arrive.

Near the moving date, review current weather and town notices. Tell the planner if access changes and agree what happens if delivery cannot proceed as planned. Keep an independent overnight kit while waiting, rescheduling or storage is being resolved.

13 /

Put the first days in a useful order

  1. Once you choose the address: confirm the handover terms, begin any school paperwork and establish the household-service arrangements.
  2. Before delivery: confirm possession, working essential services and the agreed route into the property. Obtain the manager’s instructions where needed.
  3. At the walkthrough: identify room names and furniture positions, and point out any changed access.
  4. During the first week: finish address changes, confirm collection and try the daily journeys you planned.

Keep medication, documents, chargers, basic toiletries and bedding reachable independently of the shipment. If the handover slips, contact the planner early to agree the revised arrangement. Questions before you arrive

Is Scarborough a Portland neighborhood?

No. Scarborough is a separate town in Cumberland County. Check municipal procedures and property services for the actual address.

Can I use transit for a Portland commute?

Compare the current METRO routes and service zone with your departure and return times. Route 25 has a scheduled October 4, 2026 launch; confirm operation before relying on it.

Which school will serve my address?

Confirm it with Scarborough Public Schools. Its registration page provides school contacts and the enrollment process; a neighborhood name does not establish an assignment.

Will the home have public water and sewer?

Confirm each system separately for the property. A town appearing in a provider’s service area does not establish a connection for every home.

Can I put an unwanted sofa out with the regular trash?

Arrange an accepted collection or disposal route first. Confirm the item, appointment and charges with the provider rather than relying on the cart schedule.

Does a town beach pass include the state park?

The town says its pass does not include Scarborough Beach State Park. Check the operator and current conditions for the destination you intend to use.

What should I check if I may rent the home out?

The town’s short-term rental information describes annual registration for paid stays shorter than 28 consecutive days, with zoning requirements that differ by location and owner occupancy. Check those rules and the property’s own restrictions before relying on rental use.

What happens if I cannot receive the shipment on the agreed day?

Tell the move planner as soon as the delay is known. Agree a revised access time or discuss waiting, storage or rescheduling, and keep immediate essentials with you.
