Movers in Chester, PA
Plan your Chester move around the belongings, both properties and a lawful place to load. Sterling Oakbridge provides moving, packing and storage with an agreed scope, practical access planning and written estimates.
01 /
Plan the work around both addresses
Sterling Oakbridge provides household and business moving, packing, storage and individually reviewed specialist help. For a Chester move, start with the property you are leaving and the one receiving the shipment. The usable entrance, lawful truck position and person able to open each property matter as much as the room count.
This page covers the City of Chester in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Give the full street address rather than relying on the name Chester: municipal parking instructions must match the actual property. A local move within Pennsylvania, a move into Delaware or another state, and a shipment going into storage also need different written arrangements.
Begin with the furniture and packed contents, any basement or upper-floor rooms, and the tasks you want to keep or hand over. A small shipment with a difficult stair turn may need more preparation than a larger one with direct, level access. Share photographs of the route and your largest pieces; the planning team can then recommend an item-list review, video review or visit.

Choose the help your move needs
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |
| Interstate moving | Pickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when needed | Destination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment |
| Commercial moving | Office and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictions | Business type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect |
| Packing and unpacking | Selected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpacking | What you will pack and what you want us to prepare |
| Storage and staged delivery | Storage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery plan | Expected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage |
| Designer and hotel furniture receiving | Receiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed plan | Expected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site |
You can ask for a complete household move or a defined part of the work. If you are packing yourself, identify what will be sealed and ready before the crew arrives and what still needs protection. If you need full packing, include cupboards, closets, books, fragile contents and anything stored outside the main rooms. A separate packing visit can be useful when the property allows early access and the carrying day has a short window.
For a staged move, separate what goes to the next home, what goes into storage and what must stay with you. Medication, keys, identity documents and essential personal items should remain accessible. Describe any belongings you need back during storage before choosing the arrangement; retrieval access and delivery dates belong in the agreed plan.
03 /
Keep business access and restart responsibilities clear
For an office, shop or other business move, define what must remain usable until the last working day and what can be packed earlier. List desks, storage units, displays, equipment and files by destination. Give the crew a simple room or department labeling system and name the person who can answer placement questions at delivery.
The property manager controls building access; your business controls its equipment, records and operating priorities. Arrange any loading bay, service entrance, lift reservation, certificate of insurance and permitted hours before dispatch. A building appointment does not authorize a truck to block the public street. Include every intermediate route, such as a corridor between the loading entrance and a second lift, when describing access.
For technology, identify what is being transported and what needs disconnection. Keep a separate restart plan with your IT provider, including backups and the person authorized to reconnect equipment. Moving equipment to its new room does not establish that the business is ready to reopen.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.
04 /
Trace the complete carrying route
Walk from each item to the proposed truck position, then repeat the walk in reverse at the destination. Record the clear width and height of doors, the opening with the door leaf in place, stair width, headroom, landing depth and tight turns. Photograph the largest sofa, cabinet or bed beside those constraints. Include exterior steps, changes in ground level, shared passages and any gate that must remain open.
For an apartment, ask which entrance and lifts movers may use and whether a reservation provides exclusive use. Check the size of the lift door and interior, its load limit, the distance to the unit and the availability of every lift in the chain. A wide lobby does not compensate for a tight service door. Tell us about long carries and shared lifts so the estimate reflects the actual handling route.
For a house, identify who can authorize driveway use, whether the surface and approach suit the proposed vehicle, and how the truck will enter and leave. Do not assume an alley or a neighbor’s drive is available. If an item cannot pass normally, stop the plan at that point: the team must review disassembly or a different feasible method before arrival. Crane work is outside the service scope.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Resolve the Chester curb before the truck arrives
Use a lawful curb position or an owner-approved private loading area that works for the actual vehicle and carrying route. Chester’s parking code, Article III, prohibits double parking and parking on sidewalks. Its roadway-clearance provision requires at least 15 feet to remain available for traffic; the temporary exception there concerns passengers, not household-goods loading. Keep driveways, hydrants, crosswalks and posted restricted spaces clear.
Backing a vehicle against the curb to load merchandise or materials has its own special-permit provision in §528-20. It is not the same as ordinary parallel curb parking. Send the intended position, vehicle dimensions, loading direction, date and working hours to the City when asking which permission applies. The City’s parking page is the starting point for local parking arrangements. A resident permit or payment at a meter does not by itself reserve an exclusive moving space.
The code also restricts commercial-vehicle parking near residential property between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., with an exception for actual loading or unloading in the usual course of business with occupants. Do not treat that exception as permission to leave a loaded truck overnight. If loading will extend into the evening, resolve both the lawful position and the building’s allowed hours in advance.
Before the move, obtain a specific answer about any requested restriction, temporary signs, approval or traffic arrangements, including who submits it and who pays. The reviewed public material does not establish a universal moving-space application, fee or lead time. Allow time for the City to determine the correct process. If the preferred space is unavailable, an alternative carry or delivery stage needs review and authorization before the crew is dispatched.

Separate protection, packing and unpacking
Choose full packing, selected fragile items or a self-packed shipment. Books need small manageable cartons; delicate household contents need appropriate cushioning and a carton that can close without pressure on the contents. Mark boxes by the receiving room and describe fragile or unusually valuable items before they are packed. Do not hide heavy loose items in furniture or leave the packing decision until the truck is waiting.
Basic furniture preparation and protecting a piece for transport are different from taking apart a complex wardrobe, Murphy bed or specialist sofa. Send dimensions, photographs and make or model when relevant. The team can then identify the work, method and any separate specialist quote. For fine art, explain the object, frame, value and handling requirements so the protective method is matched to the item.
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

Understand the estimate for your actual route
Moves within Pennsylvania
For household goods moved between Pennsylvania points, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission describes tariff-based charges: hourly for a distance of 40 miles or less, and by weight and mileage for more than 40 miles. Ask for the basis applying to your route and written details of packing, boxes, access and other agreed services. A room count or online distance is not a complete estimate.
Under 52 Pa. Code §31.122, the written estimate must be provided at least 48 hours before the move unless you agree in writing to a shorter period. A late request does not remove that requirement. Keep the estimate and the applicable Information for Shippers with your moving documents.
On an hourly move, estimated hours help plan staffing and whether the work can fit the day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise of completion within a minimum. Shared lifts, unfinished packing, longer carries or changed contents can change the work. Report changes early, and have the effect on the written scope explained before the affected stage begins.
Interstate and other long-distance arrangements
Crossing into Delaware or another state changes the route category even when the destination is nearby. For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the same agreed shipment and work keep the agreed price. Added belongings, extra packing, changed access or different delivery requirements need review and a revised written scope and price. Do not apply Pennsylvania’s intrastate mileage threshold to an interstate shipment.

Agree the transport and delivery stages
Direct and consolidated long-distance moving
Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.
Write down the pickup arrangement, the receiving window and who will be present at each address. If possession of the next home depends on closing or a landlord handing over keys, describe that uncertainty before booking. Delivery needs actual access; an expected key handover is not enough to dispatch a truck toward a locked property.
For a direct delivery, prepare the receiving rooms and decide where large furniture will stand before unloading. For consolidation, make sure the wider delivery window works for the household and that the receiving contact can meet it. If storage is required, agree its start, expected duration, access needs and the separate release and delivery arrangements.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.
For a move wholly within Pennsylvania, use the applicable state documents for liability and claims. The interstate explanation above applies to interstate household goods; it does not replace Pennsylvania terms. Record damage or missing items on delivery paperwork, retain the documents and follow the claims procedure for your actual move.
09 /
Choose a date that leaves room for preparation
Start with your lease or closing date and the allowed hours at both properties. Offer more than one workable date if you have flexibility. Summer, the start or end of a month and a school-year transition can affect your own schedule, but they do not establish a lower price or an available crew. Obtain the actual service date and building windows before treating the plan as booked.
Ask whether packing can happen earlier and whether the old property remains available if the new one is delayed. For rain or winter conditions, identify who will clear and maintain the exterior approach, steps and loading area. Wet floors, ice and a blocked path require a practical response before carrying begins. Weather can change the feasible sequence; it does not authorize use of a restricted curb or bypass a building rule.
Separate household travel from freight delivery. Keep a personal overnight kit and arrange accommodation that will remain usable if delivery changes. People, pets and essential documents need their own plan while the shipment is in transit or storage.
10 /
Use a clear check-in and a workable Plan B
At pickup, walk through the agreed inventory with the crew, point out items staying behind and show the full route. Keep shared passages usable and children and pets away from the work. Before leaving, check cupboards, closets and storage areas, and confirm how keys will be returned. At delivery, have the receiving contact show room labels and furniture positions, then inspect the delivered shipment and retain the paperwork.
If keys, the curb or the lift are unavailable
Set a decision deadline with the planning team before dispatch, or before losing the confirmed alternative. The trigger might be an unconfirmed key handover, a refused loading position or a lift taken out of service. The customer and the property’s authorized manager must resolve access; the planning team reviews the effect on the moving operation. A neighbor or an unattended reception desk cannot grant every permission.
Agree one usable alternative in advance: a permitted different entrance and reviewed longer carry, a revised delivery appointment, or confirmed storage with a later delivery. Name the person able to authorize the change and the person receiving the shipment. Record the availability, access, charges and any extra handling or travel before relying on it. A storage company’s contact details are not a storage booking.
Keep people and essentials in suitable accommodation while goods remain under the agreed secure arrangement. Resume delivery only when access, the receiving contact, the vehicle position and the revised cost and timing are confirmed. If no feasible alternative has been accepted, stop and resolve it with the planning team rather than leaving belongings on the sidewalk.

Send one useful starting packet
Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
Send both full addresses, your preferred and alternate dates, a room-by-room inventory, photographs of large or specialist pieces and the work you want us to do. Include the floor, all stairs and lifts, the proposed vehicle position, the carry to each entrance and the management contact. Explain any deadline to vacate and any uncertainty about possession of the next property.
Tell us what you already know and what still needs confirmation. We can help organize the next steps, but a quotation request is not a confirmed date, a municipal approval or a reserved lift. Before the move, keep the agreed inventory, pricing basis, packing responsibilities, access arrangements and receiving plan together so everyone is working from the same scope.

Questions before you move
What moving services can I request in Chester?
You can request household or business moving, full or selected-item packing, storage and staged delivery, with specialist items reviewed individually. Start with both addresses, your inventory and dates. The written scope identifies the work, route and access arrangements for your move; a request does not confirm a service date.
Is this the Chester in Delaware County?
Yes. This page concerns the City of Chester, Pennsylvania, in Delaware County. Send the full address so the planning team uses the correct municipality and property rules. A Chester mailing address alone should not be used to select a parking procedure.
Can the moving truck double park while we load?
No. Chester’s parking code prohibits double parking. Plan a lawful curb position or an owner-approved private loading area. If the intended operation requires a restriction, traffic arrangement or backing against the curb, obtain the applicable City answer and approval before relying on that position.
Does my resident parking permit reserve a space for the movers?
No. A resident permit does not create an exclusive moving-truck space. The vehicle and the loading position still have to meet the applicable restrictions. Give the City the exact frontage, date, hours and vehicle plan when asking what arrangement is available.
Can a loaded moving truck remain outside overnight?
Do not plan on street storage overnight. Chester restricts commercial parking near residential property from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.; its exception concerns actual loading or unloading in the ordinary course of business with occupants. If delivery cannot finish, arrange an authorized alternative with the planning team, including secure goods storage, access and costs.
How is a move within Pennsylvania priced?
Pennsylvania’s PUC describes household-goods tariff charges as hourly for distances of 40 miles or less, and by weight and mileage for more than 40 miles. Packing, boxes and other agreed work also belong in the estimate. Estimated hourly time is a planning figure, not a fixed final total. An interstate move uses its own applicable terms.
How far in advance must I receive the Pennsylvania estimate?
For a household-goods move governed by Pennsylvania’s estimate rule, the carrier must provide the written estimate at least 48 hours before the move unless you agree in writing to a shorter period. Ask for the estimate and Information for Shippers before signing your agreement; a short-notice request does not automatically waive the rule.
Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
What if a sofa will not turn on the stairs?
Have the route reviewed before moving day. Send sofa dimensions and photographs of the doorway, stair, headroom and landing. Basic or specialist disassembly may provide a feasible method after review; it is not guaranteed to solve every obstruction. Crane work is outside the service scope, so an unresolved fit needs another accepted plan before dispatch.
Can packing happen before the moving day?
Yes, preparation on an earlier day can be included when the property allows access and the arrangement is agreed. Specify what should be packed, what must stay usable overnight, where packed items may stand and who will open the property. Packing labor is charged for time and company-supplied boxes are separate.
What happens if I do not receive the new keys on time?
Use the agreed contingency before the dispatch or decision deadline. The planning team and authorized property contact need to confirm a revised delivery or available storage, the person receiving the goods and the added charges. Keep personal essentials and accommodation separate. Delivery resumes when access and the revised plan are confirmed; a hoped-for key handover is not sufficient.
Will the same crew deliver an interstate move?
For the direct long-distance service, a dedicated truck and the same moving crew handle pickup and delivery. A suitable small shipment may instead use consolidation with a wider agreed delivery window. Have the selected service, dates and receiving arrangements recorded in the move plan. The person preparing your estimate has a separate role.
Does a building approval also cover the street?
No. Management can authorize its entrance, lift and private loading area, while the public curb remains subject to the applicable street rules. Resolve both parts of the route. Give the planning team the management instructions and City response so the work can be scheduled around actual approvals.
