Movers in Arlington, VA
Plan an Arlington move around the belongings, the carrying route and the time you can actually use at each property. Sterling Oakbridge provides household and commercial moving, packing and storage, with the work and access reviewed before the crew is scheduled. Send both addresses and your building instructions to start an estimate.
01 /
Make the whole route part of the move
A short drive can still involve a long carry. A garden apartment may have a raised entry and another flight inside; a managed building may require a separate service entrance; a house can have basement belongings that cannot follow the easiest front-door route. Describe where the furniture starts, how it reaches the truck and where it needs to finish.
For an Arlington County move, use the full street address, unit and state in your request, including the destination. A move across the river to Washington, DC crosses a jurisdictional boundary even when the driving distance is small. A move staying wholly within Virginia needs a different regulatory review from an interstate shipment.
Start with the rooms and contents, then add dates, floors, stairs, elevator arrangements, parking and the help you want. If you are still choosing an apartment or waiting for closing, identify which details remain provisional. We can review the likely work before you have every measurement; the final schedule needs usable access at both ends.

Choose the work you need
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |
| Interstate moving | Pickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when needed | Destination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment |
| Commercial moving | Office and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictions | Business type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect |
| Packing and unpacking | Selected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpacking | What you will pack and what you want us to prepare |
| Storage and staged delivery | Storage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery plan | Expected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage |
| Designer and hotel furniture receiving | Receiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed plan | Expected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site |
You can request a complete household move or help with a defined part of it. For a small apartment, that might mean furniture protection, carrying, transport and placement while you pack ordinary contents yourself. For a furnished house, it may include packing rooms in advance, basic furniture work and a planned delivery order. Loading or unloading only should identify the vehicle or container, who supplies it and when it can be accessed.
Storage is a separate stage to plan, not an automatic solution to a late key handover. Tell us what must go into storage, what you will need back first, and the expected receiving date. The estimate should distinguish pickup, storage and later delivery so you can see the agreed work and charges for each stage.
Avoid using the number of bedrooms as the whole inventory. Include balcony furniture, basement shelves, bicycles, a storage cage and belongings already at another address. Identify items that are staying, being donated or needing a separate removal quote. Clear labels on these groups help prevent an unwanted item entering the shipment.
03 /
Moving an office or business
For an office move, start with the working areas and the deadline for making the receiving space usable. List desks, chairs, file storage, equipment and any items that require a different handling method. Share both properties' access instructions, the permitted working window and the person who can make decisions on the day.
A useful plan identifies which furniture is going to each room and how files and equipment will be grouped. If staff are packing their own workstations, agree a labeling scheme and a readiness deadline before the crew arrives. Have a receiving contact available to resolve a misplaced room label without stopping the entire delivery.
Tell us about specialist equipment before treating it as ordinary office furniture. Give its make or model, dimensions where known, connection requirements and the route through each property. A loading dock, garage or freight elevator is only useful if the chosen vehicle, load and working time are approved for it. A lease or staff parking space does not establish moving-truck permission.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.
04 /
Apartments, houses and the complete carrying path
For a managed apartment or condo, request the move instructions from management before fixing the crew's arrival. A Ballston or Rosslyn address does not tell us which entrance or elevator your particular property permits. Ask which entrance to use, whether the elevator is reserved or shared, how long the carrying window lasts and what paperwork must be approved. Send the actual instructions to the planning team rather than a summary such as “there is an elevator.”
Show the route from the legal truck position through the entrance, lobby, elevator or stairs and into the unit. Include tight turns and intermediate doors. An elevator car may fit a cabinet while its doorway or the turn outside does not. Photographs of the full opening and adjoining floor space are more useful than a close-up of one narrow point. The team can recommend any measurements needed for a particular piece.
For a house, include lower floors, rear rooms and secondary doors. Identify steps between rooms as well as exterior stairs. Check that the proposed route is available on moving day: a path used for the estimate may later be blocked by a contractor, parked car or landscaping delivery. Keep children, pets and loose belongings out of the working route.
Do not count on a garage entrance without checking its clearance and permitted use. If the truck must remain farther away, have the carrying distance and method reviewed before dispatch. Oversized pieces need a specific handling assessment; a photograph of an open window does not establish a lifting method or permission.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

05 /
Plan truck space before the arrival window
An open curb is not a confirmed loading arrangement. First distinguish private building space from a public street, identify the responsible owner and check that the actual vehicle can use the proposed position without blocking the onward route. The building's approval and the public-street process address different spaces.
Arlington County's published Moving Van/Container Permit procedure calls for an application at least five business days before the preferred start, or seven when a County-observed holiday falls in that period. It normally limits moving trucks to two consecutive days and containers to thirty days. Fees must be paid before issuance. Confirm the current instructions and address eligibility with the County before scheduling.
The application needs dates, the address, equipment dimensions, affected meter numbers and an image of the proposed street position. Temporary signage must not be installed earlier than forty-eight hours before the start. Placement must preserve travel, hydrants, driveways and intersection clearance. Confirm the issued conditions and sign arrangements with the responsible applicant; a submitted request does not reserve an unapproved space.
If the approved space is occupied when the permit becomes active and signs are correctly installed, the published procedure directs applicants to Police Non-Emergency at 703-558-2222. The crew should wait for a lawful usable position rather than improvise double parking. For a private loading bay, contact the building's authorized manager instead.
Before dispatch, agree who checks the space, who contacts the County or management, and when that person must report a problem. If the intended position cannot be used, confirm an approved alternative and have the changed carry or vehicle plan reviewed. If neither is available, discuss rescheduling or a separately agreed storage stage before loading begins.

Packing and furniture preparation
Choose between packing everything, selected rooms or only difficult items. The estimate needs to distinguish contents packing from furniture protection. Tell us about kitchen cupboards, framed pieces, lamps, books and fragile collections that need preparation. If you pack ordinary contents yourself, agree what must be finished before the carrying window opens.
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
Use manageable cartons and label the destination room. Keep paperwork, medication, keys, chargers and immediate personal supplies with you. Mark furniture and boxes that are staying; do not mix them into the working route. Point out fragile or unusual items even when they are already packed so their condition and handling needs can be reviewed.
For furniture, describe both the construction and the work required. A simple bed frame differs from a large wardrobe fitted to a room. Provide photographs of the assembled piece and its route; the planning team can identify whether basic work is sufficient or a specialist quote is needed. Decide final room positions before delivery where possible, especially for pieces that will be reassembled there.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

Understand the estimate and final charges
Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total
Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.
A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.
Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price
For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.
The address-specific plan explains why two similar inventories can require different time. A reserved service elevator and nearby legal bay create a different working arrangement from shared elevator access and a longer carry. Include preparation, separate pickup points, waiting risks and receiving restrictions when you request the estimate.
For a wholly Virginia household-goods move, review the applicable written estimate and tariff terms. Virginia's estimate law distinguishes an ordinary estimate from a binding estimate. An ordinary estimate is not a guaranteed ceiling. A binding estimate can still involve destination accessorial tariff charges that could not be known until the delivery sight survey. A written estimate must also be accompanied by a DMV-approved information booklet.
The Virginia DMV household-goods carrier guidance states that deliveries over thirty miles must use the rates in the carrier's filed tariff. This is a regulatory condition, not a published Sterling Oakbridge price list or a rule that every short move has one universal rate. Have the route, charging basis, included work and any separately charged services identified in your own documents.
Review a change before the affected work begins. Added boxes, newly discovered basement furniture, a different delivery address or a missed building window can change the plan. Keep the revised inventory and agreed arrangements in writing, and ask what happens to the schedule and charges if the receiving property is unavailable.

Transport, delivery and protection
Direct and consolidated long-distance moving
Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.
For a local delivery, identify who has the keys and who can direct placement. If you are leaving a Courthouse apartment for an Arlington house, for example, the origin elevator window still needs to fit the loading, drive and receiving access; the short journey does not remove either property's constraints. For a longer route, include the earliest usable receiving date and any building window at the destination. A requested arrival time needs confirmation with the shipment plan; a short road distance or a tentative lease date does not establish it.
Give each room a clear name and use that name on cartons and your furniture plan. Keep the receiving entrance and circulation space available while items are placed. Furniture can then go to its intended position without repeatedly moving boxes out of the way. Check the rooms with the crew before completion and raise visible concerns while the relevant item is still accessible.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

09 /
Work within the day's access conditions
Plan around the hours approved for the actual property. A weekday office move, a weekend household move and a building with a shared service elevator can need different preparation. Ask when packing materials may enter, when carrying can begin and when the loading area must be cleared. Build the schedule from confirmed permissions rather than a hoped-for quiet time on the road.
Rain, heat, ice or temporary works can change the usable route. Check the entrance, steps and approved vehicle position before the crew is dispatched. Report a closure or slippery approach early so the team can review a safe method and timing. Do not assume an exterior shortcut is a suitable substitute for the agreed route.
If other contractors will be present, identify their working areas and access needs. A painter's equipment in a hall or a scheduled appliance delivery can occupy the same route the moving crew needs. Have the customer or building contact resolve that conflict before the carrying window, and keep a contact reachable during the work.
10 /
A practical moving-day fallback
Name one customer contact who can authorize a change and one person who can unlock the receiving property. Before dispatch, that contact should confirm the keys, building access and vehicle position. If access is uncertain, notify the planning team before the truck is loaded; the useful decision point comes before the shipment is committed to an unavailable destination.
For example, if a closing is delayed, ask when the property will actually be released and whether a confirmed later window is available. Review a revised direct delivery, rescheduling or an agreed storage stage. Establish the available capacity, handling stages, earliest redelivery, charges and who approves them. Storage is not confirmed merely because it appears in the service menu.
Keep the household's immediate needs outside the shipment. Arrange where people and pets will stay, how they will travel, and who keeps medication, documents and overnight supplies. Do not make access to those essentials depend on an unconfirmed storage retrieval.
Resume delivery only after the authorized receiving contact confirms the keys, usable route and agreed arrival window, and the planning team confirms the revised service arrangement. Put the resulting plan in writing so the customer, building and crew are working from the same instructions.

Start your Arlington estimate
Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
Send both full addresses, preferred dates, an item list or room photographs, floors and access instructions. Add the packing, storage, specialist handling or removal work you want considered. Mention any provisional closing, lease or elevator booking so the team can identify the next decision that needs confirmation.
Useful access photographs show the legal vehicle position, the complete entrance, stairs or elevator openings, tight turns and the onward route to the room. You do not need a polished survey packet. Start with what you know, and we will recommend the appropriate next review for your belongings and properties.

Questions before you move
Do you move households in Arlington, Virginia?
Yes. You can request household moving, packing and storage for an Arlington, VA address. Provide both full addresses, dates, belongings and access instructions so we can review the actual work and schedule. This page concerns Arlington County, Virginia.
Can you move only a few pieces or help with loading?
Yes. Identify each item, both carrying routes and whether you need transport or loading or unloading only. For a customer-arranged vehicle or container, include its type, access and available time. The written scope should identify who supplies the transport and what work our crew will perform.
Can I arrange full packing before moving day?
Yes. Request full packing or selected rooms and list fragile or specialist items. Where preparation needs a separate day, we review that schedule and the property's access permission. Packing uses working time, and company-supplied boxes used for the job are charged separately.
Are blankets and basic furniture work charged separately?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Will you unpack at the new property?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
What should I send for an apartment or condo estimate?
Send the unit and floor, inventory, management instructions, permitted moving hours, approved entrance, elevator arrangements and proposed truck position. Include photographs of tight turns and the whole route. The planning team can request measurements or a video review for a particular piece rather than making you measure everything first.
Does having an elevator mean the move is straightforward?
It helps only if the opening, car, approach and onward route suit the belongings and its use is approved for the required time. Confirm whether it is reserved or shared, who controls it and what happens if it becomes unavailable. Send the building's actual instructions before final scheduling.
Can a truck use my building's garage?
Only after its use and clearance are checked for the actual vehicle. Send the garage instructions and any height or turning restrictions. If the truck must stay outside, the legal position and changed carrying route need review before dispatch; a resident parking space does not establish moving-truck access.
Do I need an Arlington street permit?
For temporary public-street placement of a moving van or container, use Arlington County's permit process and confirm its application and issued conditions for your address. Private loading space needs the property owner's approval. Decide who submits and confirms each request before setting the arrival plan.
What if the agreed loading space is occupied?
Tell the designated customer or building contact immediately and keep the crew out of an unlawful position. For a public reserved space, follow the County's instructions; for a private bay, use management's contact. Confirm an approved alternative and review the changed carry, or agree a revised schedule before loading.
Is a local estimate a fixed price?
Usually not. Most local work is hourly, and estimated or minimum hours do not cap the total or promise completion within that time. Review the charging basis and separately charged work in your documents. Changes in inventory, readiness, access or waiting can affect the time and plan.
What should I check for a move staying in Virginia?
Check the applicable estimate, tariff terms and moving documents for your route. Virginia distinguishes ordinary and binding estimates, and permits specified destination accessorial tariff charges under a binding estimate. Ask which terms apply to your shipment; do not treat a sample tariff or an estimated number of hours as your final total.
Is a move from Arlington to Washington, DC interstate?
Yes. The route crosses from Virginia into the District of Columbia even if it is a short trip. Include both addresses so the shipment and paperwork are reviewed under the appropriate terms. Road distance alone does not determine whether the move stays within one jurisdiction.
Can I choose direct long-distance delivery?
Yes. Direct service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. Give the destination's usable receiving date and access window. For a suitable small shipment with more flexible arrival dates, ask about consolidated delivery and its agreed wider window.
Can you store my belongings if my new home is delayed?
Yes, storage can be included in an agreed plan. Confirm availability, pickup and storage handling, access needs, charges and later delivery arrangements before relying on it. If a delay occurs, notify the planning team before dispatch or loading and arrange immediate supplies and accommodation outside the shipment.
Do you move offices and business equipment?
Yes. Share the inventory, working window, building instructions and receiving-room plan. Specialist equipment needs a review of its construction, connections and access. IT transport and disconnection are available; have your IT team arrange reconnection and startup. Crane work is outside our scope.
Can you move a piano, safe or large wardrobe?
These can be reviewed for individual quotation. Send photographs, dimensions or make and model where relevant, and the route at both ends. Explain any dismantling, installation or other work needed. Do not assume the method or price from an ordinary furniture estimate.
Can you remove unwanted furniture or packing waste?
Furniture removal and used-packaging collection can be quoted separately. Identify the items or materials, quantity, access and any property restrictions so we can review the removal and receiving arrangements. Packaging and waste removal are not included automatically in box unpacking or ordinary delivery.
What protection should I arrange before the move?
Discuss the available liability and additional-cost protection, limits and claims process before moving day and record your selection. Tell us about high-value items in advance. Interstate Full Value Protection applies unless Released Value is selected through the required written waiver; valuation differs from a separate insurance policy.
How can I contact the move-planning team?
Use the estimate request or call (475) 221-2030. Include your full Arlington, Virginia pickup address, destination, preferred dates and the help you want. The planning team can review your belongings, access and next step for the actual shipment.
What happens if the receiving keys are not ready?
Contact the planning team before dispatch or loading when possible. Have the authorized customer contact confirm a realistic access time and review rescheduling, a revised delivery or an available storage stage with its charges. Arrange personal essentials and accommodation separately. Delivery resumes after access and the revised service plan are confirmed.
How do I get the right level of survey?
Start with both addresses, dates, your contents and the help required. Add access photographs and building instructions if available. Our planning team will recommend an item-list, video or in-person review according to the work. You do not need to choose a survey method before contacting us.
