Arlington offers several ways to live close to Washington: a home near a Metro station, an apartment along a bus corridor, or a quieter residential address with a different daily travel pattern. The useful comparison is the complete routine—housing, groceries, school, outings and the journey home. Use this guide to compare places, understand the local arrangements and prepare an arrival that fits your actual property.
Compare the building, its shared entrance and the walk beyond the property. Representative illustration.
01 /
Start with the decision you need to make
If you are still choosing a home, start with the place comparisons, then use housing and costs to build a budget for a specific unit. A neighborhood name is a useful starting point; the entrance, available space and recurring journeys determine whether the home works for you.
If you hope to live without a car, read everyday travel before narrowing the search. Test groceries and a Sunday return as well as the work commute. A direct train ride can be valuable, while a bus connection may require a more deliberate evening plan.
If the address is already settled, go to school registration, home services and the arrival plan. Keep the lease or closing date, the date you receive usable access and the moving crew's arrival as separate appointments until each is confirmed.

Put the address in its county context
This guide concerns Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac from Washington, DC. County departments handle the local public services and street procedures discussed here. Use the complete street address and unit when checking a service; a postal label or an attractive neighborhood description does not establish a school assignment, parking entitlement or utility arrangement.
The map locates seven selected places against the actual County outline, main roads and waterways. Its labels are approximate orientation points. Courthouse and Clarendon are grouped for comparison, for example, without drawing a boundary around them. Westover and East Falls Church are also distinct places within a broader comparison; a home near one is not automatically a short walk from the other's destinations.
Use the map to build a shortlist, then follow the street-level route for the property. It does not identify a particular station entrance, school zone, building entrance or legal truck route. Open the larger map to read the road context, and use the current transport tools for an actual journey.
Locate seven comparisons against the County outline, roads and waterways. Labels are approximate, not neighborhood or school boundaries. Explore the map.

Compare seven places and their daily routines
These seven comparisons use selected places and corridors, with some adjoining names grouped for orientation. They are not formal neighborhood boundaries or a ranking. Start with the routine each offers, then inspect the specific home. School assignment, utilities, parking and building access each require their own address check.
Rosslyn
Start here for a dense urban setting and the Blue connection as well as Orange and Silver rail.
The County describes a skyline of office buildings and condominiums. Compare the particular unit, shared entrance and usable rooms rather than assuming that all buildings offer the same layout or amenities. A higher floor and an attractive view do not settle storage, service access or the monthly charges.
Daily travel
Rosslyn is a rail connection to compare with your actual destination. Add the walk to the entrance and the grocery journey, including the return with bags. Test an evening outing as well as the weekday commute; nearby office activity does not establish your whole household routine.
Before choosing
If you are comparing a home just beyond the core, follow the complete outward and return route. Ask the building for its own parking, elevator and delivery arrangements. The urban-village name does not grant access to a garage or a loading area.
Courthouse–Clarendon
Compare County-government access, shops, restaurants and the Orange–Silver corridor together.
Courthouse contains County offices, while the County characterizes Clarendon as a walkable mix of businesses, restaurants, public space and tree-lined streets. Compare the specific apartment, condo or other home offered; this combined orientation corridor is not one uniform housing type or a formal boundary.
Daily travel
Court House and Clarendon stations provide Orange and Silver rail. Whole Foods at 2700 Wilson Boulevard supplies a concrete grocery-walk anchor between the comparisons. Walk from the actual unit entrance, through the crossings, and back at the time you expect to shop.
Before choosing
A home close to a busy commercial street and one on an adjoining residential block can create different routines. Inspect the actual entrance, listen during a viewing and ask about the property’s service window rather than assigning one experience to the whole corridor.
Virginia Square–Ballston
Start with two western rail-corridor centers, then compare the destinations around the home.
The County describes Virginia Square’s mix of education, arts, residential uses and parks near its Metro station, and Ballston as a busy downtown setting. Look at the available unit and its usable space, building charges and storage. The area label does not make two apartments equivalent.
Daily travel
Virginia Square–GMU and Ballston–MU are on Orange and Silver. Central Library and the local shopping destinations can help test an ordinary week. Include the real station entrance and return journey; a station shown on a map does not supply a walking time from every nearby block.
Before choosing
Use the current bus stop and construction alerts if your journey connects with the Pike or another part of Arlington. Compare the complete route and property access before giving priority to an advertised distance alone.
Pentagon City–Crystal City
Compare Blue–Yellow rail, shopping and the actual property’s everyday connections.
The County describes Pentagon City as a shopping and dining destination with varied housing among commercial buildings, and Crystal City as a mixture of office, hotel and residential uses. Check the individual unit, its charges, shared circulation and the entrance you will actually use. These are distinct places grouped here for orientation.
Daily travel
Both stations connect with Blue and Yellow; the same rail map shows Reagan National Airport on these lines. Add the grocery trip, evening activities and the walk to your own entrance. For an early flight, check the first useful service and arrange a paid alternative when needed.
Before choosing
Obtain the building’s parking, visitor and moving instructions. A route through a retail complex or a public-facing lobby is not automatically the approved route for furniture delivery, and a garage intended for household cars may not accept a moving vehicle.
Columbia Pike
Consider a corridor of varied housing, local shops and restaurants with a bus-based travel pattern.
The County emphasizes the Pike’s variety of housing and local businesses. Compare the actual apartment, garden-apartment unit, duplex or other home offered, including its steps, heating and cooling, storage and included charges. A corridor name covers more than one building type and daily journey.
Daily travel
ART 41 connects the western Pike with Ballston, Clarendon and Court House, including published weekend service. Your complete trip includes the current boarding stop, waiting and the return direction. Construction closures can change the stop that an older map suggests.
Before choosing
Try groceries, a weekday appointment and a Sunday outing before deciding that the bus pattern fits. A home that works well with these connections can offer a different routine from one directly beside a rail station; compare the tradeoff explicitly.
Shirlington
Start here for a village outing, a library and greenway access, with bus connections beyond the center.
The County identifies Shirlington as an arts and entertainment center. Compare the actual village apartment or home farther from the center, including its floor plan, costs and the route with shopping. Being advertised as “near Shirlington” does not establish the same walk to the village for every address.
Daily travel
The bus station connects with other parts of Arlington rather than providing a Metro platform in the village. ART 87 reaches Pentagon on weekdays and Pentagon City on weekends; ART 77 serves Court House Monday–Saturday. The Sunday evening return needs attention because ART 87’s posted hours finish earlier.
Before choosing
Shirlington Library on Campbell Avenue and Shirlington Park on South Arlington Mill Drive are concrete destinations to test. Include the walk home and the park’s daylight hours. Use current stop alerts when planning the bus approach or return.
Westover–East Falls Church
Compare older residential settings and a local library against the actual rail or bus journey.
The Westover historic-district account records houses, garden apartments, duplexes and twin houses developed mainly between 1939 and 1948. That history explains architectural variety, not the present condition or availability of an individual home. East Falls Church is a separate residential comparison near its named Metro station.
Daily travel
Use Westover Library at 1644 North McKinley Road as one everyday anchor and locate the actual East Falls Church station entrance for a rail journey. A Westover address is not automatically a short station walk. Try the outward and return trip, including any bus connection, instead of treating the two places as interchangeable.
Before choosing
For an older home, inspect all usable floors, entry steps, storage and maintenance responsibilities. Compare the space you gain with the transport and upkeep you take on. Confirm school assignment and utilities separately for the specific address.
04 /
Compare the home and the full household budget
Arlington's housing choices include compact condos, managed apartments, older garden apartments, duplexes and detached houses. That variety matters more than a single headline price. A smaller condo may have the rooms you need but separate monthly building charges; a larger house may offer more storage while adding maintenance, utilities and a different transport budget.
The Westover historic-district account describes development from 1939 to 1948, including modest Colonial Revival houses, garden apartments, duplexes and twin houses. This explains part of the older housing landscape. It does not establish a listed home's present condition, alterations or availability. Treat the actual floor plan and inspection as the property evidence.
What an asking-price snapshot can tell you
An October 20, 2026 review of Arlington listing results included a 900-square-foot condo advertised at $295,000, a 1,675-square-foot house at $825,000 and a 2,636-square-foot house at $1,275,000. These are three selected asking examples with different property types and sizes. They are not sale prices, a median, a prediction or the price of every home in the surrounding area.
Rental examples were equally different. Woodbury Park advertised a studio starting at $1,744 with an income restriction and possible fees. A 2,450-square-foot house on North Westmoreland Street was advertised at $4,695 a month, also with possible fees. The restricted studio offer is not a general market-rate apartment benchmark. Ask about eligibility, the actual available unit, lease dates and the complete charges before using an advertised starting rent in your budget.

For a rental, request the written list of recurring and one-time charges and identify which services the landlord includes. For a purchase, review the property and association documents with the people advising on the transaction. Compare homes using the same expected occupancy period and household needs; a low advertised monthly figure can omit something you will pay separately.
Compare usable space before arranging delivery
Bring the dimensions of furniture you intend to keep, but start with how the rooms will be used. Identify a sleeping area, work area, ordinary storage and a clear circulation route. A living room that fits a sofa may still leave no comfortable way to reach the next room once a desk and dining table are added.
Check the complete entry and every internal turn for larger pieces. Include the door opening, the landing on each side, stair turns and any elevator doorway. An advertised floor area or a photograph of an empty room cannot establish whether a particular piece will pass. Share photographs of the route with the moving team before treating a difficult item as a routine carry.
Compare usable floor space and the connecting doorway; keep packed items outside the route. Representative illustration.

Build a routine that works without a car
Living without a car is realistic for many households near the Rosslyn–Ballston rail corridor or the Pentagon City–Crystal City stations, especially when groceries and regular activities are also close to the actual home. It becomes more dependent on bus connections and paid backup trips along other corridors. For a household whose destinations are spread across the suburbs, keeping a car may be more practical even if the work commute uses Metro.
That is a choice about everyday life, not simply distance to a station. Include a normal grocery shop, a medical appointment, an evening outing, weekend activities and the trip back in poor weather. Test the route with the person who will use it. A comfortable walk for one adult may be a different task with a stroller, mobility device, heavy bags or a tired child.
Match the address to the transport connection
The Metro system map places Court House, Clarendon, Virginia Square–GMU, Ballston–MU and East Falls Church on the Orange and Silver lines. Rosslyn also provides the Blue Line connection. Pentagon City and Crystal City sit on the Blue and Yellow lines, which also serve Reagan National Airport. These are useful network relationships; they do not give the walking time from a particular apartment or certify that the required elevator is operating.
Columbia Pike has a different pattern. ART 41 connects the western Pike with Ballston, Clarendon and Court House. Its published April 2026 schedule lists 15-minute service through much of the weekday and 20-minute service during other listed periods. Saturday service is listed every 20 minutes from 6:45 a.m. to 1:05 a.m.; Sunday service every 20 minutes from 7:25 a.m. to 12:05 a.m. Use the timetable for your direction and stop rather than treating these route-level hours as a departure from your front door.
Shirlington has a bus station rather than a Metro station in its village center. ART 77 connects with Court House Monday through Saturday. ART 87 connects with Pentagon on weekdays and Pentagon City on weekends. The current ART 87 page lists Saturday service every 30 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and Sunday service every 30 minutes from 7:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. That earlier Sunday finish is a material difference when planning an evening return.
Construction can change the boarding point. ART's alerts include closures and detours affecting stops on Columbia Pike, Wilson Boulevard and approaches around Shirlington. Locate the current stop for both directions when trying the trip; a familiar route number does not mean an old stop is still being served.
Include evenings, weekends and trips beyond Arlington
Metro's posted October 24–25, 2026 weekend information gives general hours of 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday and 6 a.m. to midnight on Sunday. Check the current weekend notice and the last train for the actual journey when you travel. Station closing hours are not a promise that the last useful train leaves your stop at that time, and future track work can change the route.
A car-free household should have a workable paid alternative for an early flight, a late return or a trip that is awkward by transit. The County lists licensed taxi companies, including Red Top Cab at 703-522-3333. Ask the operator about the pickup, vehicle and fare arrangements for your journey. App-based rides are another option where available; their price and availability still need confirmation. These options also matter to people who do not hold a driver's license. Hiring a car is useful only for someone eligible to drive it.
Walking and cycling can add flexibility, but inspect the complete connection rather than assuming the shortest line is comfortable. Look at crossings, lighting, the surface and the return route. A park trail is a recreational resource with its own hours and conditions, not an automatic substitute for an after-dark street journey.
Try the complete grocery walk, including crossings and the return with bags. Representative illustration.

Separate school assignment from enrollment and choice
For a public-school search, begin with the exact home address in the Arlington Public Schools boundary locator. The neighborhood school is an address-based result. A postal ZIP, nearby campus or real-estate description does not assign a child to a school. For a move affecting a later school year, ask APS to confirm the applicable boundary and grade arrangements for that year before relying on an earlier result.
APS's published registration information accepts new-student registrations for the 2026–27 year and states that neighborhood-school registration has no application deadline. There are three published starting routes: online document upload followed by a virtual meeting with a registrar; an appointment at the neighborhood school; or an appointment with the APS Welcome Center at 2110 Washington Boulevard, first floor. The Welcome Center lists Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; call 703-228-8000 and select option 1 to arrange help.
Have the full address, the student's intended grade and previous school information ready when contacting the registrar. Ask which identity, residency and school records apply to your circumstances, and obtain the current checklist before submitting them. If housing is temporary or records are missing, raise that circumstance with the Welcome Center at the start rather than postponing the request or assuming a standard document list settles the case.
Health records are a separate preparation task
Virginia's health guidance requires a school entrance physical completed within the preceding 12 months for a child's first entry to public kindergarten or elementary school. It does not impose a new entrance physical merely because a student is entering middle or high school. Age- and grade-appropriate immunization documentation still matters, and local tuberculosis screening requirements can apply.
The statute also permits qualifying records of the report supplied on a prior school admission, so a transfer does not automatically require a fresh examination. It has a physical-examination exception for a parent’s religious objection when the child shows no visual evidence of sickness and the parent provides the specified written health statement. That is separate from immunization requirements.
If homelessness prevents supplying the examination records, contact the Welcome Center about the school-division liaison process. The law provides immediate admission with the specified affidavit and assistance obtaining the examination. Raise the situation when requesting registration help.
Ask the school nurse or registrar to review the records your child already has. The Virginia health form separates parent health information, immunization certification and the clinician's examination report. Equivalent records may be assessed against the required components. This is a reason to request records early, not to arrange an unnecessary examination solely because the household is moving.
Option schools and programs use a separate application process. New APS families exploring an option program are encouraged to register for their neighborhood school as well. Neither an application nor a home's proximity establishes an option-school place. Confirm the relevant program's current process, deadlines and any transport arrangements with APS.
Use a few real destinations to test a shortlist. Whole Foods Market at 2700 Wilson Boulevard is one concrete grocery anchor for the Courthouse–Clarendon comparison. Walk to the entrance from the actual property, include the crossings and try the return with a normal shopping load. This does not mean every nearby address has the same walk or that this is the right store for every household's budget.
Libraries help test a different part of the week. Shirlington Library is at 4200 Campbell Avenue; Westover Library is at 1644 North McKinley Road, Suite 3. Use the branch's current hours and program calendar to choose an actual visit. A convenient address is valuable only if the journey and the service fit when you will use them. Treat an event listing as an event, not a guarantee of childcare or a place in a program.
For outdoor time, Shirlington Park offers a paved trail, stream and fitness equipment beside the Four Mile Run Trail. The County lists its location at 2601 South Arlington Mill Drive, limited parking and sunrise-to-sunset hours. Include the approach and the journey home in your plan; access to a greenway does not establish that the whole route to your home is lit or suitable at night.
If work, school or an activity is farther away, try that journey too. One household may value a compact village routine and a bus connection; another may prefer a house with more private space and accept driving to activities. Comparing those tradeoffs is more useful than treating every desirable destination as equally close to every Arlington home.
Include a park visit and the return journey in the routine you test. Representative illustration.
08 /
Arrange the actual home's services
Start with the lease, seller or property manager's description of what is included. In a managed apartment or condo, water, refuse or other charges may be handled through the building. Ask which accounts you must open, which meters serve your unit and how a technician obtains access. Do not create a separate County account simply because you have an Arlington mailing address.
County water, sewer and refuse accounts
For a property using a customer account with the County, the published start procedure asks you to call 703-228-5000 at least one business day before the desired start. The Customer Contact Center lists Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. The page lists a $40 water turn-on fee for a new account, reflected on the first bill. Initial billing can differ by service and opening date, so keep the service confirmation and check the first bill's period.
A tenant or other non-owner account needs the property owner's authorization. Have the owner's contact details ready and use the County's authorization process. Water and sewer will not start until the signed non-owner form is received; the County asks callers to allow up to 24 business hours for processing before calling back to commence service. Leave time for that step as well as the requested start date. A completed form is not the same as a scheduled turn-on; look for the welcome confirmation after scheduling.
When leaving a County-served home, request the final bill one to two business days before the stop date. The County warns that water can be turned off as early as 6 a.m. if no replacement account is scheduled that day. Coordinate the handover so the outgoing account's end and the incoming home's usable services match the plan.
Electricity, gas and connectivity
Dominion's Virginia start-service instructions ask for the exact address and unit, customer identity and contact information; a meter number is helpful. Use the provider's secure account process. Its published connection charge is $5.70, and service orders are worked Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., excluding holidays. Request the date early and keep the meter accessible. Some situations require an adult to provide access, and deposit requirements can apply.
For a home with Washington Gas service, give at least two working days' notice—48 hours excluding weekends and holidays—and arrange access to the home. Start charges depend on the circumstances, including whether the gas is already on, and a deposit may be required. Electric service must be active for gas appliances with electronic ignition; water must be active before a gas water heater can be lit. Schedule those dependencies in the right order.
Ask the building or owner about the internet connection already serving the unit, then check the provider's address-specific installation and equipment arrangements. County contact information includes Verizon and Xfinity, but a provider's presence in Arlington does not establish that a particular plan or connection is available in every unit. If you work from home, arrange the confirmed connection date and a temporary option before the first working day.
Plan ordinary refuse and the move-out items separately
Arlington's County curbside program serves single-family homes, duplexes and some town houses. Apartment and other managed properties can have different collection arrangements. Identify which system serves the actual address and ask management where household refuse, recycling and large items belong.
For County curbside customers, place carts out by 6 a.m. on collection day and no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before; remove them within 24 hours after collection. Follow the property's collection day rather than leaving move-out materials outside when the unit is emptied. If a collection is missed, the County asks for a report by 5 p.m. on the first business day after the scheduled trash day.
Ordinary bulky household furniture such as a sofa or mattress does not require a separate pickup request under the published County curbside instructions, provided it is suitable for that collection. Furniture must fit into the back of the trash truck. Items weighing more than 500 pounds need a private hauler at the resident's expense. Electronics and bulk metal need separately arranged special collection; call 703-228-5000 or use the County's service tools. A building's private collection contract may work differently.
Keep unpacking materials separated. The County accepts cardboard and other specified recycling loose rather than inside bags. Cartons containing packing peanuts, foam or trash can be left behind as improperly prepared recycling. Glass bottles and jars use drop-off recycling, and polystyrene packing materials belong in trash under the published instructions. The County also identifies grocery-store collection as an option for plastic bags and bubble cushioning. Use the item lookup for anything uncertain before putting it in a cart.
Decide who removes the materials generated by your move. Unpacking box contents, removing packaging and taking away unwanted furniture are different tasks with different arrangements. If requesting help from Sterling Oakbridge, specify the items and work for a quote; do not assume the moving crew or the building's collection service includes everything left at the property.
For a winter arrival, agree who clears the steps, private path, building entrance and legal unloading area before the crew is dispatched. Those are operational checks for the specific property. A public sidewalk's legal clearing deadline does not mean the private carrying route will already be ready when your appointment begins.
The County requires property owners to clear adjoining public sidewalks across their width up to three feet. The published timing is within 24 hours after snow stops for accumulations below six inches, or within 36 hours for six inches or more as measured at National Airport. Another snow event resets the clock; the County posts the official ending time for an event. Physically incapable individual homeowners and snow redeposited by government action have stated exemptions, and the County Manager can suspend enforcement because of conditions.
Keep snow from private property off public streets and sidewalks. Where a manager or contractor handles clearing, establish who reports an untreated step or blocked entrance and who can arrange the correction. Inspect the route again before use; an illustration of a cleared sidewalk or a report that a contractor visited does not certify an actual surface is free of ice.
During hot weather or heavy rain, include suitable personal supplies and a clear place for the household while work is under way. Report a slippery entrance, standing water or a closure to the planning contact. If conditions prevent the agreed approach, obtain a usable authorized alternative or revise the appointment. An unapproved exterior shortcut is not a substitute for the access arrangement.
Agree who clears and treats the steps, private path and public sidewalk before a winter arrival. Representative illustration.

Keep resident parking and moving access distinct
Resident street parking, a building's private garage and space for a moving vehicle are separate arrangements. A lease can include one while leaving the others unresolved. Ask where the household car may stay, where visitors may park and where the moving vehicle can lawfully stand for the actual loading period.
The 2026 residential permit transition
Arlington began a phased transition to electronic Residential Permit Parking permits in July 2026. Existing customers are being called by zone group, with renewal information sent by email and post. The County says printed FY2026 permits remain valid through the relevant zone's transition period; keep the paper permit until replaced rather than treating its printed June or July date as the sole instruction.
Not every County address is eligible for RPP. Verify the precise address before relying on street parking as part of a housing decision. The published eligibility process requires proof of residence and, for a vehicle-specific permit, registration with the Commissioner of Revenue at that address. If an address is not recognized and you believe it is eligible, contact park@arlingtonva.us or 703-228-3344. For a building's private garage, obtain the separate space, vehicle and visitor terms from management.
A vehicle position and a complete carrying route
For public-street placement, Arlington County's published Moving Van/Container Permit procedure calls for an application at least five business days before the preferred start, or seven when a County holiday falls in that period. A private loading area requires the owner's or building's approval instead. Confirm which space is involved, the actual vehicle dimensions, permitted dates and any sign arrangements before scheduling around it.
A building may also control the entrance, elevator and carrying hours. Ask for the actual move instructions and identify who approves required paperwork. Show the complete route from the permitted vehicle position through doors, turns and stairs or elevator to the unit. Do not treat a resident parking permit or an open garage door as permission or sufficient clearance for a moving truck.
The Arlington moving-services page explains the work to discuss, the County street process and estimate preparation in more detail. Send the property instructions to the planning team while dates can still be coordinated.
Make one plan covering the home, the household and the belongings. Name the person who can authorize changes and the person who will unlock the receiving property. Agree when access must be confirmed before loading, how the two contacts can be reached and who passes any change to the moving team.

Have the authorized contact resolve a blockage or obtain an agreed alternative
After arrival
Essential supplies, service confirmations, room placement and remaining paperwork
Record unfinished items and who will complete them; keep essentials accessible
If the keys are delayed
Suppose an apartment handover is delayed while the originating home must be vacated. Contact the planning team before the truck is loaded and ask the authorized property contact when access will actually be released. A hoped-for time later that day is not a receiving appointment.
Review a confirmed later delivery window, a revised moving date or a separately agreed storage stage. Establish which alternative has capacity, who authorizes it, the handling and delivery stages, charges and the earliest usable receiving date. A storage contact or a service listed on a website is not a booking. Keep the written revised plan with the people directing the work.
Arrange where people and pets will stay and how they will travel. Keep medication, documents, keys, chargers and overnight belongings with the household, outside the shipment. Resume delivery only when the receiving contact confirms usable access and the planning team confirms the revised arrival arrangement. This decision is easier before loading commits the belongings to a destination that cannot receive them.
Keep the vehicle paperwork on separate clocks
For a new Virginia resident with a vehicle, DMV lists 30 days for titling and registration, and 60 days for an ordinary driver's license; the CDL deadline is 30 days. Safety inspection, applicable emissions requirements and insurance are separate parts of the vehicle process. Use DMV's current checklist for the vehicle and your circumstances.
Arlington also requires the separate vehicle personal-property tax account with the Commissioner of Revenue within 60 days. DMV does not notify the County on your behalf. Complete both records and any address-specific RPP application; updating one does not finish the others.
Is Arlington a separate city or a county for these services?
Use Arlington County, Virginia, for the local services in this guide. The County handles the cited water, refuse, parking and street procedures. Check the full street address and unit for the actual service arrangement; an Arlington postal label does not establish a particular school, parking permit or building utility account.
Where should I start if I want to live without a car?
Start with homes near the Rosslyn–Ballston rail corridor or Pentagon City–Crystal City, then check that groceries and regular activities fit the actual address. Columbia Pike and Shirlington offer useful bus connections with different evening and weekend patterns. Try a grocery return, an outing and a Sunday trip as well as work. A convenient commute alone does not make the whole routine practical.
How do Rosslyn and Ballston differ for a transit search?
Both sit on the Orange and Silver rail corridor, while Rosslyn also has the Blue Line connection. Rosslyn offers a dense office-and-condo setting; Ballston is another busy urban center farther west. Compare the specific home, grocery route, building entrance and destination rather than assuming either place has one price or a universal walking time to Metro.
Does Columbia Pike have the same rail access as Clarendon?
No. The Pike comparison is primarily a bus connection rather than a station along the Orange–Silver corridor. ART 41 links the western Pike with Ballston, Clarendon and Court House, with published weekend service every 20 minutes during its listed hours. Locate the current boarding stop and both directions for the actual home, including construction changes, before relying on that connection.
Can I rely on the same Shirlington bus late on Sunday?
ART 77 does not provide Sunday service, and ART 87's published Sunday service ends at 6:45 p.m. Plan the actual return through current transit tools and alerts. If it does not have a suitable service, arrange a paid taxi or another confirmed alternative rather than assuming the outbound bus will also take you home late.
What if I do not have a driver's license?
Choose an address whose routine works by walking, transit and suitable paid trips. A licensed taxi is a usable alternative without driving yourself; the County lists operators such as Red Top Cab at 703-522-3333. Confirm the pickup and vehicle required for your journey. A rental car or car-sharing option only helps someone eligible to drive it, so it should not be your sole backup.
Are the housing prices here a typical Arlington budget?
They are selected October 20, 2026 asking examples, not a typical price or a market average. The examples have different sizes and property types. Build your own budget from the actual unit, current terms and all recurring charges. In particular, the Woodbury Park starting studio offer is income restricted and may have fees; it is not a general market-rate rent benchmark.
What should I inspect beyond the advertised floor area?
Check the rooms you will actually use, storage, furniture positions and a clear route between them. Then inspect the complete entrance, doorway openings, landings, stairs or elevator and internal turns for larger pieces. Share photographs with the moving team when an item or route needs review. An empty-room photograph cannot establish that your furniture will pass or leave comfortable circulation.
How do I find the neighborhood public school?
Use the exact home address in the APS boundary locator and confirm the intended school year and grade with APS when necessary. A ZIP code, a nearby school or a real-estate description does not assign a student. Option programs use a separate application process, so their location should not be treated as a guaranteed place for the child.
How can I start public-school registration?
APS publishes three routes: online upload followed by a virtual registrar meeting, an appointment at the neighborhood school, or an appointment with the Welcome Center at 2110 Washington Boulevard. Call 703-228-8000, option 1, for the Welcome Center. Its published hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Describe the address, grade and any missing records or temporary housing so staff can identify the appropriate process and checklist.
Does every child need a new physical because we are moving?
No. Virginia's entrance-physical rule applies to first entry to public kindergarten or elementary school, with the examination within the preceding 12 months. It does not automatically require a new physical for entry to middle or high school. Qualifying prior-admission examination records can also satisfy the statute. Ask the school nurse to review existing records and applicable exceptions or screening requirements before arranging additional appointments.
Should I wait for an option-school result before registering?
APS encourages new families exploring option schools to register for their neighborhood school as well. Treat the option application and neighborhood enrollment as separate processes. Ask APS about the relevant program's current deadlines, grade eligibility and transport arrangements; submitting an application does not guarantee a place.
Will I need my own County water account in an apartment?
Ask the property manager which services the building handles and which accounts you must open. County water, sewer and refuse account procedures apply to the properties they serve, while a managed building can bill or arrange services differently. Obtain the unit-specific instructions before opening an account or assuming utilities are included in the advertised rent.
What extra step applies to a tenant's County utility account?
A non-owner account needs the owner's signed authorization. Have the owner's details ready, submit the required authorization and allow up to 24 business hours for processing after the signed form is received, then call back to arrange service. The County says water and sewer will not start before that signed form is received. Keep the scheduled service confirmation; submission alone does not establish the turn-on appointment.
In what order should I arrange electricity, water and gas?
For a home using Washington Gas, active electricity is needed for gas appliances with electronic ignition, and active water is needed before a gas water heater can be lit. Arrange those dependencies and access to the home before the gas appointment. Washington Gas asks for at least two working days' notice excluding weekends and holidays; use each provider's confirmed dates rather than assuming all services start together.
Does a sofa need a special County pickup request?
For eligible County curbside customers, the published instructions allow ordinary bulky household furniture such as a sofa at regular trash collection without a separate pickup request, provided it fits the collection requirements and truck. Electronics and bulk metal need special collection; items over 500 pounds require a private hauler. A managed building's private service may have different rules, so identify the address's collection system first.
Where should unpacking materials go?
Separate the materials before collection. County recycling takes specified clean, empty materials loose rather than in bags; cardboard containing packing peanuts, foam or trash can be left behind. Glass bottles and jars use drop-off recycling, while polystyrene packing goes in trash under the published instructions. Use the County item lookup for uncertain materials, and agree separately who removes packaging generated by the move.
Is my old paper parking permit invalid because its printed date has passed?
Do not decide from the printed date alone. Arlington's 2026 electronic-permit transition calls existing customers by zone group, and the County says FY2026 paper permits remain valid through the relevant transition period. Follow the current instructions for your zone and keep the paper permit until replaced. For a new address or an unrecognized application address, ask the RPP team to verify eligibility.
Does resident parking permission also reserve the moving truck's space?
No. Resident street parking, private building space and public-street moving-vehicle placement are separate arrangements. Determine the actual loading position and obtain the applicable County or property approval, then coordinate the building entrance, elevator and working window. For the County public-street process, apply at least five business days before the preferred start, or seven when a County holiday falls in that period.
Who is responsible for clearing snow before arrival?
Agree responsibility for the private steps, path, entrance and unloading area with the owner or manager before dispatch. For adjoining public sidewalks, the County requires property owners to clear within 24 hours after snow ends below six inches, or 36 hours for six inches or more as measured at National Airport, subject to the stated exemptions and the County’s official storm ending time. That legal deadline does not establish that a particular private carrying route is ready at your appointment time.
What are the main vehicle deadlines after an out-of-state move?
DMV lists 30 days for vehicle titling and registration and 60 days for an ordinary driver's license, with 30 days for a CDL. Arlington's separate vehicle personal-property tax account is due within 60 days; DMV does not notify the County for you. Work through the applicable inspection, emissions and insurance steps as well, and treat any RPP permit as another address-specific arrangement.
What should I do if the receiving keys are delayed?
Tell the planning team before loading and obtain a usable handover time from the authorized property contact. Review a confirmed later delivery window, rescheduling or separately booked storage, including capacity, handling, charges and the next delivery date. Arrange people, pets and overnight supplies outside the shipment. Resume only when receiving access and the revised moving plan are both confirmed.
