Movers in Dumfries, VA
A Dumfries move might begin at a townhouse door, a garage or a business loading area. Sterling Oakbridge starts with the route your belongings will take and the work you want done, then builds the moving plan around both properties.
01 /
Give the move a clear beginning and destination
Start with both full addresses and the date each property becomes available. Include a storage unit, another household or any extra stop that belongs in the same move. If keys will change hands while you are travelling, name the person who can receive the crew.
Walk through every space in the inventory, including a garage, shed, attic room or off-site storage. Separate belongings that are staying from those to be moved. A few photographs of each room help reveal large pieces and access questions that a bedroom count misses.
When you are still choosing the home, our Dumfries relocation guide covers the practical arrangements to investigate before fixing the delivery date.
02 /
Choose which tasks you want taken off your list
You may want to pack gradually yourself, have the kitchen and fragile items prepared for you, or arrange help across the whole home. Tell us what you will finish and what you want the crew to do.
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |
| Interstate moving | Pickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when needed | Destination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment |
| Commercial moving | Office and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictions | Business type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect |
| Packing and unpacking | Selected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpacking | What you will pack and what you want us to prepare |
| Storage and staged delivery | Storage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery plan | Expected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage |
| Designer and hotel furniture receiving | Receiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed plan | Expected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site |
For a small shipment, list the actual pieces and any cartons still being packed. For a larger household, identify rooms that must stay usable until departure. The plan can then match the work without guessing from the size of the property.
03 /
Make the estimate reflect the whole job
Send the inventory, requested services, dates, floor levels and access photographs. Point out large or delicate pieces, extra stops and any gap requiring storage. Show the approach to the building as well as the front door.
Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total
Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.
A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.
Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price
For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.
Compare estimates against the same scope: packing, materials, loading access, delivery and additional tasks. Ask how a changed inventory or delayed handover would be handled. Keep the agreed version available and update it when the job changes.
04 /
Check the garage door as carefully as the front door
A garage can look like an easy way into a house until the route reaches two steps and a narrow interior door. Record the whole path: level ground outside, the threshold, landing, door opening and the turn into the next room.
For a townhouse or apartment, show every flight and landing between the vehicle and the destination room. Measure usable space around fixed rails and door hardware. A large piece needs to make each turn, even if it fits through the first doorway.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.
Agree which entrance may be used and who can authorize any change. Keep outgoing furniture and items staying at home away from that route.

05 /
Agree a loading position before the court fills up
At a shared parking court, establish who controls the space and where residents need to pass. Show the proposed vehicle position, the approach from the road and the room required behind the truck. Confirm any association or property-management arrangements in advance.
The town publishes a Route 1 widening project page and directs readers to Public Works for current timing and traffic impacts. Check relevant notices near the move date instead of relying on the route seen during an earlier viewing.
For a position on a public road, ask Dumfries Public Works which authority and arrangements apply. A driveway or apparently empty curb is not automatically a suitable place for the vehicle. Keep pedestrian access, collection areas and other entrances usable.

06 /
Pack for the rooms you are going to use
Set aside documents, medication, keys, chargers and a change of clothes before packing gathers pace. Keep the items needed during travel or a storage gap with you. Label other cartons by their intended room, with a brief contents note where it helps.
Use small cartons for books and other dense contents. Give dishes their own preparation and cushioning; leave fragile pieces visible for discussion rather than adding them loose at the last moment.
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
If you are doing part of the packing, agree when it will be ready and which items remain for the crew. Keep the unpacking plan realistic: a usable kitchen corner and bedroom can matter more on the first evening than opening every box.

07 /
Raise awkward and valuable pieces early
Send photographs, dimensions and any handling instructions for an unusually heavy, fragile or valuable item. Include the route at the receiving property; getting a piece out of one home does not show how it will reach the next room.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.
Identify specialist assembly, equipment preparation or installation as separate work. For appliances and connected equipment, agree who performs the necessary preparation and when it must be complete.
08 /
Decide what the business needs working first
For an office, shop or other business premises, mark the equipment, records and stock that must be available immediately after delivery. Label them against the receiving layout and decide what stays in service until the last working day.
Arrange the loading area and building access with the property manager. Include operating hours, shared entrances and a receiving contact who can answer placement questions. Do not assume that a commercial address has a level entrance or a private loading bay.
Coordinate network, utility and installation appointments with the providers responsible for that work. Their schedule may affect when a room can receive furniture, even when their work is outside the moving scope.
09 /
Make a plan for the gap between addresses
A closing, tenancy handover or work assignment can leave time between departure and arrival. Tell us the confirmed dates and the parts still uncertain so storage or an alternative delivery arrangement can be discussed.
For a move connected with military orders, identify transportation-office requirements and any base-access steps before confirming arrangements. Ask that office about authorization and reimbursement; a household moving booking does not establish either.
Book around the real receiving window and keep an alternative in mind. If access, keys or a date changes, tell us while there is still time to revise the plan.
10 /
Keep the working route clear from the first carry
Before arrival, move household cars from the agreed loading position and clear the route inside. Keep children and pets away from open doors and the working area. One available contact can settle questions without several people giving different directions.
Walk the route with the crew lead. Point out fragile fittings, items that stay and the rooms that should receive the largest pieces. A garage threshold still needs checking even when the floor on either side is level.
Direct and consolidated long-distance moving
Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.
At delivery, review the agreed tasks and placement before the crew leaves. Keep any remaining work specific so you know what can be handled next.

11 /
Keep protection, unpacking and disposal clear
Discuss the protection choices and questions about individual belongings before moving day. Keep those arrangements with the estimate.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.
Sort unwanted items before departure week. The town’s waste guidance requires advance arrangements for bulk material and excludes several kinds of waste. Confirm acceptance before putting items out; transporting belongings and disposing of unwanted material are separate tasks.

Questions before you move
Do you arrange both local and interstate Dumfries moves?
Yes. Tell us the origin, destination, inventory and requested work so the appropriate moving plan can be reviewed.
Can you help with a small shipment or only part of the packing?
Yes. List the pieces and cartons, and identify which packing tasks you want handled. Include access and any additional stops in the request.
Can a garage be the delivery entrance?
It may be an option, but show the full route, interior door, steps and turns, and confirm the owner permits its use. The route needs to work for the particular items.
Who agrees the truck position in a shared parking court?
Start with the property manager or association responsible for the space. Confirm the position and timing, and include access for other residents in the plan.
Are basic materials and furniture assembly separate charges?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Can you unpack and remove the packing materials?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
What if military orders affect my dates?
Tell us the confirmed dates and any uncertainty. Check transportation-office authorization, reimbursement and base-access requirements with the responsible office before confirming arrangements.
Can you handle an office or shop relocation?
Yes. Send the equipment and stock inventory, receiving layout, access and operating constraints, including what must be usable first.
