Moving help for the contents you are keeping

Sterling Oakbridge plans household and business moves, packing and storage for Newport News. Start with the belongings you are taking, the help you want and the receiving arrangements at the next address. A useful plan connects preparation, carrying, transport and placement, including the things that must stay available until the final evening.

Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.

Give both complete addresses, unit numbers and floors. Newport News is an independent city; a familiar Peninsula neighborhood or a nearby city name cannot select the authority for a particular curb or building. Tell the planner which decisions are confirmed and which still depend on a property representative, closing or a later delivery appointment.

You can request an estimate before every detail is settled. Identify unresolved access and inventory questions so they receive a decision deadline. A desired moving date becomes a workable schedule when the household can release its contents and the destination can receive them.

Plan for the actual home and its retained contents

Newport News includes several housing settings, and each raises different moving questions. The examples below are planning situations rather than accounts of completed customer jobs. Check the actual property before adopting an entrance, parking position or handling method.

A Hilton Village cottage with a short front approach

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources record describes modified English cottage architecture and detached, double and row houses in Hilton Village. For a home of this type, connect the front walk, entry steps, doorway and first interior turn in your photographs. Show a side or rear entrance separately if you want it considered. Architectural character does not establish the width or condition of an individual carrying route.

A Port Warwick apartment or live-above home

Port Warwick’s community description includes houses, townhomes, live-above homes, apartments and condominiums. Identify the residential entrance and the route from the accepted loading position to your unit. A commercial frontage or nearby square does not establish permission to load there. Where common access is involved, obtain the actual manager’s hours, lift arrangements and protection requirements.

A Denbigh household with belongings beyond the main rooms

The City’s Denbigh-Warwick planning page describes the area’s growth through single-family subdivisions and commercial strips. For a household with a garage, shed, loft or several storage closets, include every retained group in the survey. Decide which tools, seasonal belongings and spare furniture go to the next home, to storage or into a separately reviewed removal scope.

A move between the Peninsula and Southside

Identify the actual origin and destination before planning a harbor crossing. A move between Newport News and Hampton does not automatically require a tunnel. If the selected route does cross one, the assigned vehicle and load must suit that route. Treat the truck itinerary and the family’s passenger-car trip as separate planning decisions.

03 /

Connect the loading position to the final room

Send a continuous video or a sequence of photographs covering the proposed truck position, public sidewalk, private path, entrance steps, threshold, doors, landings, turns and receiving rooms. Include low ceilings and rails. A large front door does not settle a tight turn just beyond it, especially after furniture has been protected.

For a stair route, show the whole flight and both landings. Include the inside corner and overhead clearance where a long piece changes direction. Measure the actual item and relevant bottleneck when requested; a room’s floor area cannot establish whether its furniture can pass through the route.

We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.

The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

At an elevator property, include any steps before the lift, the cabin and door dimensions, the transfer corridor and the final unit entrance. Obtain the actual working window, reservation process, COI recipient and wording, security procedure, deposits and submission deadline. Name the person who can accept the arrangement and report a change.

Keep preparation and carrying in the same schedule. If a building permits cartons or protection to arrive before the carrying window, agree that earlier access with its representative. Common passages and doors still need to remain usable for other residents.

04 /

Choose a lawful working position with room to load

Start with an accepted off-street position where one is available. Show the driveway entrance, slope, surface, overhead obstructions and room to work around the selected vehicle. A driveway that fits a passenger car does not establish a suitable truck position. Agree use with the person who controls the property.

For a street position, send the exact block, side of street, date, hours and vehicle needs to the appropriate City contact. The City’s parking information distinguishes residential permit parking, loading zones and vehicle restrictions. A resident permit does not reserve a truck-length space. Its guidance on the two-hour large-vehicle limit includes active loading and unloading; that exception does not create a reservation or authorize waiting overnight.

Keep the public sidewalk, driveway openings and required pedestrian route clear. The City states that no part of a vehicle or trailer may block the public sidewalk. At a cul-de-sac, its parking guidance calls for parking parallel to the curb rather than backing or heading into it. Leave turning and working space in the plan instead of filling every available gap.

The Right-of-Way Permit page covers listed work and stationary objects in public rights-of-way. It is not a published universal permit requirement for every occupied moving van. If a container, obstruction or other proposed use falls within that process, establish its classification, applicant and required documents before committing to it. An approved position for a working truck does not itself authorize leaving a container behind.

Have the actual arrangement confirmed before dispatch. If the proposed curb is unavailable, use an accepted alternative with a reviewed carrying distance and vehicle plan. A nearby garage, private lot or commercial loading area becomes an alternative only after its responsible party accepts the intended use.

05 /

Settle possession and receiving access before loading

Confirm when keys, possession and permission to receive the shipment become available. For a purchase, use the closing and property contacts to resolve those conditions. For a rental or condominium, confirm the manager’s moving arrangements as well as the lease start. A key handover does not book a lift or a loading position.

Give the planner a receiving contact with authority to approve placement and respond to an access change. Mark rooms clearly and identify furniture that must be placed before cartons fill the floor. Clear the intended footprint for the largest pieces and leave a continuous route for the crew.

If the receiving date remains uncertain, choose a decision deadline before dispatch and review a real alternative: an accepted later slot, a separately planned stage or available storage. Agree the charges, access to essentials and conditions for resuming delivery. Keep the family’s accommodation and travel decisions connected to that plan.

06 /

Pack the retained household in a usable sequence

Choose full packing, selected rooms or agreed fragile groups. Show cupboard, drawer and closet contents during the estimate, including the groups you will pack yourself. Furniture counts alone leave out much of the preparation. Keep gifts, disposal and storage groups separate from the contents going directly to the new home.

Labor, materials and optional work

Item or taskHow it is charged
Basic furniture disassembly and reassemblyPart of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee
Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tapeNo separate charge for these basic protection materials
Boxes supplied for your moveCharged separately
PackingCharged for working time; boxes are separate
Unwrapping furniturePart of delivery
Unpacking the contents of boxesOptional work, charged for working time
Packaging and waste removalCharged separately
Complex furniture and other specialist workIndividually quoted after review

Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.

Books can be divided into manageable cartons while the last-night kitchen, bedding and work supplies stay available until the agreed time. Put medicines, identification, keys, valuables and travel documents under your own control. Mark the final groups that become available late so they do not turn into an unplanned room of loose contents.

For split delivery, label by destination, receiving room and useful contents. Confirm storage intake, release notice and the later delivery arrangement. Labels help the crew identify a group; they do not secure storage capacity or a delivery appointment.

At the destination, choose closed-carton placement, optional contents unpacking or customer-directed placement in the requested scope. Provide appropriate clear surfaces and tell the crew what should be opened first. Collecting used paper indoors and taking packaging away are different tasks to agree.

Review protection, handling and final placement together

Photograph large pieces, their construction and any existing repairs. Include dimensions, glass, removable sections and mechanisms. Compare the protected outside size with the complete route at both properties. A piece that passed into the old home years ago may need a different plan at the new address.

Identify which parts are designed to separate and how fittings will stay with the correct item. Do not assume a bonded support behaves like a removable leg. Discuss a different entrance, vehicle arrangement or specialist method before treating it as an available solution.

Specialist services by individual quote

What needs attentionWork available for review
Complex furnitureBunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly
Heavy itemsPianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables
Art and collectionsFine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification
Hanging and installationPictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately
Business equipmentOffice furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route

Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

During delivery, furniture protection comes off as the receiving placement is completed. Keep that operation distinct from opening and putting away carton contents. The destination should have a clear furniture footprint and enough working space for the agreed assembly and placement.

Pianos, artwork and unusual pieces need their own construction, weight, value and route review. An available service category does not confirm a particular operation or date. Include the person authorized to approve the final position.

Use the actual bulk program, or arrange separate removal

Newport News’ Bulk Waste Program serves eligible properties paying the current Solid Waste User Fee and accepts listed resident-generated items, including furniture and mattresses. It limits combined bulk and vegetative waste to six cubic yards per collection. That is a collection limit, not a commitment to clear an entire house.

The published set-out window begins after 3 p.m. on the day before collection and ends before 7 a.m. on collection day. White goods require an appointment. Confirm the property’s collection arrangement and the item’s eligibility before placing it outside. Keep the carrying route and the retained shipment clear of discarded items.

The program excludes commercial waste, contractor-produced debris and debris from property vacant for more than 60 days, among other materials. Resident do-it-yourself remodeling debris has its own permit conditions. A household move does not make every object eligible for municipal collection.

Give any proposed private hauling its own inventory, materials, destination and carrying route for review and pricing. Separate retained belongings first. Disposal, donation or collection must have an actual accepted destination before it becomes the solution for unwanted contents.

09 /

Release and receive business contents in clear groups

For an office, shop or other business move, identify what must keep operating until the last working period. Group the inventory by release time and receiving location. Include furniture, equipment, stock and stored records where they are within scope, with the access contact at each end.

Agree lift and loading arrangements, floor protection, security, document handling and any building labor-access requirements. Name the person who can approve a release, changed placement or additional work. A receiving label should lead to an available room or footprint.

Give your technical team responsibility for reconnection, testing and system startup. Review transport and disconnection separately from that work. Equipment arriving in the building is one stage; the business needs its own plan to resume operations.

10 /

Compare the same scope under the applicable estimate

Compare inventory, preparation, vehicle access, stairs, carrying distance, storage and receiving work together. State what you will do yourself. A smaller-looking estimate may cover fewer contents or omit a difficult route; agree the same scope before comparing the resulting charge.

Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

For a household-goods move wholly within Virginia, DMV’s consumer guide says moves of 30 miles or less may be charged by the hour. Its guidance for moves over 30 miles calls for itemized charges, and the carrier requirements include a tariff on file with DMV for that longer intrastate work. Crossing the 30-mile threshold does not turn a Virginia-only move into an interstate flat-rate service.

Virginia Code §46.2-2157 allows a written estimate based on visual inspection or information furnished by the shipper. Clarify whether it is binding or nonbinding and check the inventory and access assumptions. The statute allows binding estimates subject to its conditions, including qualifying destination accessorial charges unknown at the required survey. Request the applicable consumer information and time to review the documents.

Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

Review protection with the applicable shipment documents. Interstate valuation options do not establish the default terms of a Virginia-only move. Identify high-value items and existing damage before agreeing handling and protection; a general discussion cannot replace the actual terms.

11 /

Choose the response before a route or date fails

If the planned route uses a tunnel, have the carrier review the assigned vehicle’s dimensions, load, direction of travel and permits against VDOT’s truck restrictions and current posted conditions. Restrictions vary between facilities and directions. A passenger-car navigation choice is not proof that the moving truck can use the same route.

Check the property’s location with the City’s flood-risk resources where water exposure matters to the approach or storage plan. During a flood, the City advises against walking or driving through floodwater. A mapped location does not establish that a particular entrance or road is usable on moving day.

Before dispatch, name the people authorized to decide when access, possession, weather or the loading position changes. Set the decision time early enough to change the plan before loading creates a stranded shipment. Identify the accepted alternative, any revised carrying distance or separate stage, its cost and the conditions for later delivery.

Keep medicines, keys, documents and the first-night group accessible to the household. A delay plan should explain where people stay, who updates the crew and receiving contact, and what confirmation allows work to resume. Storage or a later slot is useful only when its actual availability has been agreed.

12 /

Send the contents, route and decisions for review

Send both addresses, floors, desired dates and the retained inventory. Include preparation, storage, unusual pieces, proposed loading positions and destination placement. Show every retained storage area as well as the furnished rooms. List access or possession decisions that remain open and the people who own them.

Let the scope determine the survey

A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.

Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.

The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.

Use the method that makes the actual contents and route clear. Explain what changes after the survey: an added room, a different date, a newly discovered stair or extra destination work can affect the plan. Have the revised scope and applicable charges recorded before the additional work proceeds.

For date flexibility, offer the dates that both properties and the household can accept. Compare complete workable arrangements, including time away from work, receiving help and storage if needed. An alternative date is a planning option, not a promised discount.

Questions before you move

What moving help can I request in Newport News?

Household and business moving, packing and storage can be planned around the retained contents and receiving arrangements. Choose full preparation, selected rooms or agreed fragile groups, and describe assembly, unusual pieces and optional unpacking. The estimate should identify the actual work and availability for your move.

Do you have to inspect the whole house for an estimate?

The scope determines the survey. A clear item list may be enough for a small straightforward move; more contents, packing, specialist pieces or restricted access can call for a video or in-person review. Send what you know so the planning team can recommend the appropriate method. The surveyor is not necessarily part of the moving crew.

What should I show for a Hilton Village cottage?

Show the retained contents and a connected route from the proposed vehicle position through the private walk, steps, entry and first interior turn. Add stairs, landings and alternative entrances where relevant. The historic housing description is a starting point; the actual protected furniture and route determine the handling plan.

How do I plan a Port Warwick apartment or live-above move?

Identify the residential entrance, unit, floor and accepted loading position. Obtain the property representative’s actual moving hours, lift arrangements, protection and insurance-document instructions. A nearby shop frontage or parking area does not grant loading permission for the dwelling.

Does a resident parking permit reserve room for the moving truck?

No. The City’s residential permit program concerns eligible parking; it does not reserve a truck-length working area. Confirm the exact position, date, hours and vehicle requirements with the responsible parties before dispatch, including enough space to load without blocking the sidewalk.

Can a truck park head-in at a residential cul-de-sac?

The City’s parking guidance calls for parking parallel to the curb in a cul-de-sac, rather than heading or backing into it. Review the actual position and turning space for the selected vehicle. A convenient gap does not override signs or other applicable restrictions.

Does active unloading mean the truck can wait overnight?

No reservation or overnight authorization follows from that exception. The City FAQ includes active loading and unloading in its discussion of the two-hour large-vehicle limit, while other restrictions still need review. Arrange an accepted waiting or working position for the actual vehicle and hours.

Does every moving van need a right-of-way permit?

The published Right-of-Way Permit process covers listed work and stationary objects; it does not establish that every occupied moving van needs that permit. Give the Permit Office the actual proposed use if it involves a container, obstruction or other relevant placement, and obtain the applicable classification and instructions.

Will a move to Hampton necessarily use a tunnel?

No. Newport News and Hampton are on the Peninsula. The actual addresses and accepted truck route determine the journey. If another destination requires a harbor crossing, the carrier must review the truck, load, direction and applicable restrictions rather than simply using the family’s car route.

How is a move wholly within Virginia priced?

DMV guidance says moves of 30 miles or less may be hourly; for longer intrastate moves, compare itemized charges under the applicable tariff and estimate. Give every estimate the same inventory, packing, carrying route and receiving scope. A longer Virginia-only move is not automatically an interstate flat-rate move.

Is a written Virginia estimate always a guaranteed final price?

No. Confirm whether the estimate is binding or nonbinding. §46.2-2157 permits estimates based on inspection or shipper-furnished information and defines conditions for binding estimates, including qualifying unknown destination accessorial charges. Review the actual inventory, access and documents, and agree additional requested work in writing.

Can you pack books now and leave the last-night essentials usable?

Yes. Agree the selected groups and when each becomes available. Books and other retained contents can be prepared before the final kitchen and bedding group. Keep medicines, valuables, keys and travel documents with you. Packing uses working time and company cartons are charged separately.

Are basic assembly and packing materials included?

Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.

Can you unwrap furniture, unpack cartons and remove packaging?

Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.

Can we put unwanted furniture out for City bulk collection?

Eligible properties paying the current Solid Waste User Fee can use the Bulk Waste Program for listed resident-generated furniture and mattresses. The combined bulk and vegetative limit is six cubic yards per collection. Set-out is after 3 p.m. the previous day and before 7 a.m. on collection day; confirm eligibility and the actual collection arrangement first.

Will bulk collection take appliances and all renovation debris?

White goods need an appointment. The program excludes contractor-produced debris and commercial waste, and resident do-it-yourself remodeling debris has permit conditions. It also excludes debris from property vacant more than 60 days. Give any separate private removal its own materials, inventory and price review.

What happens if the destination or loading position is unavailable?

Use the authorized contacts and deadline agreed before dispatch. Confirm a later slot, accepted alternative position or separately planned stage or available storage, with the revised cost and receiving conditions. Keep essentials accessible and decide where the household stays. Resume delivery once access and unloading arrangements are confirmed.

Does a business move include restarting our computer systems?

Transport and disconnection can be reviewed, while your technical team owns reconnection, testing and startup. Provide release groups, security conditions, receiving locations and an authorized contact. The business’s restart plan must continue after the equipment is unloaded.
