Start with the lease, owner or closing team: identify the existing supplier and meter for electricity, gas and water, then separate those from Township sewer billing and any county charge. The Township's resident welcome packet lists PSE&G, South Jersey Gas, New Jersey American Water and Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission as utility contacts. It does not mean every address receives every service from them.
For a property served by PSE&G, its start, stop and transfer instructions distinguish opening the new address from closing the old one. Have the full service address, requested dates and contact details ready; a new account may require a deposit and identity information through the provider's secure process. A transfer includes both addresses and both dates. Keep the old address active for the period in which you still need it.
South Jersey Gas distinguishes a home with an existing gas meter from a property that first needs availability and installation review. Establishing an account is different from installing a new connection. Give the actual provider access for any required appointment and retain the accepted service date. If the home uses New Jersey American Water, arrange its account handoff through that provider using the existing property and account information; do not use MPWC's process for a different water company.
For an existing MPWC property, the purchase and sale process calls for a final water reading before settlement and an account transfer after closing. The buyer should find out whether the reading has been ordered and provide the closing evidence or account update. This is separate from the engineering application for a new water connection. MPWC's landlord and tenant rule keeps the property owner on the account; a tenant can be added with identification and a valid lease.
The Tax Collector handles Township sewer charges; residential sewer is billed annually with an April 1 due date. Establish the current account and who pays it rather than assuming the water-company bill covers it. The Sewer Department says the resident is responsible for the sanitary line from the main connection to the home and directs sewer-bill questions to the Tax Collector. For a rental, distinguish the lease's payment duties from the provider's account rules.
Finally, arrange internet installation, equipment return and access to any shared utility room. On handover, record meter readings where accessible and agree who can enter if an appointment changes. If essential power, heat or water is not confirmed for the arrival date, decide the household's temporary accommodation before loading rather than arriving with people and belongings at an unusable home.
