Vermont / City relocation guide

A practical guide to moving to Colchester, Vermont

Prepare for the household’s ordinary week as well as arrival. Confirm the actual property, school process, usable connections and daily trips, with a backup for unfinished arrangements.

01 /

Start with the town and the exact property

Colchester is a Vermont town in Chittenden County. The Census town outline here retains the whole boundary, including its water extent. It does not define a postal area, parcel, school assignment or usable truck route.

Confirm the address and jurisdiction with the property owner before opening accounts or choosing a school process. ZIP 05446 and a listing description are useful address details, but they do not settle every service responsibility. Keep the handover date, owner contact and unresolved work together.

Inspect a home for an ordinary week

Try the rooms, storage, laundry space and work area the household will use. Check heating equipment, visible maintenance needs, windows, lighting and the condition of the approach. Ask which appliances remain and which repairs will be completed before handover.

Compare the actual lease or purchase terms, recurring bills, setup charges and shared responsibilities. Visit at the hours relevant to the household. Confirm what must be usable for the first night, and keep a record of the outstanding work with its owner.

04 /

Try the everyday route as well as delivery access

Walk from the usual arrival point to the rooms you need, including door operation, changes of level, rails and lighting. Consider children, visitors, assistance and the household’s own mobility needs. Ask who maintains a shared corridor or outside approach.

Confirm normal entry arrangements separately from a temporary delivery booking. Keep maintenance and management contacts accessible, and ask how a lost key or unavailable entrance is handled.

05 /

Establish which vehicle space comes with the home

Ask which spaces belong to the tenancy or property and which are shared, private to a neighbor or part of a public road. Include visitors and deliveries in the discussion. Confirm signs and the responsible authority before promising a vehicle position.

Use Public Works for a town-road question. The town’s FAQs distinguish state roads and private roads from town-maintained roads; explain the actual location instead of assuming one office controls every approach.

06 /

Compare places without treating them as fixed service zones

The town’s driving-tour page names Colchester Village Center, Malletts Bay, Airport Park and Fort Ethan Allen. Use those names to organize property visits and daily destinations, then test the actual address.

Compare the school journey, shopping, work trip, outdoor access and recurring household responsibilities for each home. These planning areas are not attendance boundaries or a guarantee that all properties share utilities, housing types or travel times.

07 /

Use the school process for the student’s grade and year

Colchester School District registration separates preschool, kindergarten and other grades from returning-student verification. The grades 1–12 instructions also distinguish the relevant grade groups and transfer arrangements.

Contact the district with the actual address, grade, arrival date and school year. Arrange records and any outstanding documents early, and confirm the first school day with the school rather than relying only on an online submission.

08 /

Confirm residency and the current assignment

The district’s residency guidance asks for one listed primary document, such as a formal lease or closing record, or two of its listed alternatives. Ownership alone does not establish that the family lives at the property. Ask the registrar how to handle records changing during the move.

The zone-streets document effective for 2026–27 explains enrollment balancing between Union Memorial and Porters Point for certain streets, with sibling considerations. Confirm the student’s assignment directly; proximity to a school or this town map does not determine it.

09 /

Arrange the actual stop and a first-week backup

The district’s transportation page gives route and contact information and asks students to be visibly waiting seven minutes before their approximate stop time. Stops and schedules can change; check the current route for the enrolled student.

Confirm where the student waits, the return arrangements and who handles a missed connection. Agree school-day changes through the school or transportation office, and keep the family’s confirmation with the household during packing.

10 /

Test the complete outward and return journey

Try work, school, shopping and appointment trips at the times you expect to use them. Include destination parking, the final walk and the return after an evening activity. Keep an alternative for a car, ride or connection that is unavailable.

Green Mountain Transit’s #9 Winooski timetable lists connections including the Downtown Transit Center, Winooski and Water Tower Hill at Shaw’s. Some marked weekday runs operate only when Burlington schools are in session. Establish the usable stop and current day’s service for the actual home; the route name does not mean every Colchester address has nearby transit.

11 /

Identify the water supplier for the address

The town’s water-supply page says Colchester has no town water department. It identifies Fire District No. 2 for part of Malletts Bay, Champlain Water District for other areas, and Essex as the Fort Ethan Allen contact.

Ask the owner and the relevant supplier which arrangement applies to the exact property, who holds the account and when service will be usable. Check a private supply separately if relevant. Keep water, sewer and other household accounts distinct when requesting a transfer.

12 /

Ask how the shore sewer work affects the property

The Malletts Bay sewer page publishes connection work and access changes along specified parts of Lakeshore Drive, including estimated fall 2026–fall 2027 work for one phase and a Williams Road detour during East Lakeshore closures.

Check the current street instructions and the owner’s actual connection status. A published phase does not confirm that a particular home is already connected or establish its bill, contractor appointment or usable entrance.

13 /

Confirm heat, power and internet before occupancy

Ask which electricity, heating-fuel and internet providers serve the home, who owns the equipment and whether a visit is needed. Record the confirmed usable date and the person giving a technician access, rather than only the date of an application.

The town stormwater page separately describes annual property-owner billing based on impervious surfaces. Ask the owner how the current charge and any closing or tenancy responsibility apply; verify the current bill instead of carrying an old published rate into the household budget.

14 /

Choose household collection and a destination for cartons

Colchester’s service FAQs state that the town does not collect household trash and recycling. Ask the owner about a private contract, shared bins, pickup position and current recycling instructions before the first collection.

CSWD’s Essex Drop-Off Center is at 218 Colchester Road in Essex. Check the actual material, load limits, fees and eligibility before travelling, particularly for large items or a commercial removal. It is a neighboring Essex facility, not a town collection service.

15 /

Make the library part of the first-week plan

Burnham Memorial Library is at 898 Main Street, with 802-264-5660 for questions. Check the current hours and calendar for a visit, activity or pickup. Keep identification and changing address records available when asking about a card.

The library’s digital-services page links an online card application and learning resources. Confirm the card and access required for the service you want; a link to a resource does not settle eligibility or a reservation.

16 /

Choose an outdoor visit around the actual facilities

Bayside Park is at 2 West Lakeshore Drive and includes a beach, paths, playground and courts. Some facilities are seasonal. Check current conditions and any booking before making a day’s plan.

Try the entrance, parking and walking route that fit the household, and check current shore or water information before swimming.

17 /

Keep care, appointments and everyday essentials working

Contact existing health, care and support providers about records and arrangements after arrival. Confirm that the intended new provider can accept the household’s needs before relying on a directory listing or nearby address. Keep medicines, necessary equipment and contacts with the people using them.

Assign shopping, meals and transport during the first days. Ask who can help if a supplier visit, school appointment and work shift overlap. A furnished home still needs a workable daily routine.

18 /

Check winter parking and the final approach

The town winter program states that unauthorized overnight parking on public land and highways is restricted from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., November 15–March 15. It also prohibits pushing snow onto a public street or sidewalk without written Public Works permission.

Ask who clears the private drive, landing and steps, and who treats ice or reports an obstruction. Check the actual approach after plowing. Arrange a practical alternative when the route or essential home connection is unavailable.

Questions before you arrive

Does ZIP 05446 or the map determine every service?

No. This is the full Census town boundary, including water. Establish the property’s jurisdiction, school assignment, provider and usable route by its actual address.

Will my child automatically attend the nearest elementary school?

Confirm directly with Colchester School District. The 2026–27 zone-streets document includes enrollment balancing for listed streets; proximity alone does not determine assignment.

Does Colchester have one town water department?

The town water page says it does not. Identify the supplier and account for the actual property with the owner and appropriate provider.

Does the town collect household trash and recycling?

The town FAQs say it does not. Arrange the applicable private or shared collection, or confirm an eligible drop-off destination for the load.

Is the Essex Drop-Off Center in Colchester?

It is at 218 Colchester Road in Essex. Check current CSWD material rules, limits, fees and eligibility before travelling.

Which overnight winter parking rule should I check?

Colchester’s winter page restricts unauthorized parking on public land and highways from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., November 15–March 15. Confirm the location and applicable permission.
