South Burlington has its own civic services, schools and local destinations alongside regional connections to Burlington and Williston. Choose an address by the routine you need to live there, then resolve the accounts, documents and access that make the first weeks work.
Try the journeys that will become part of the household’s ordinary week.
01 /
Start with the actual city and address
South Burlington is an incorporated city in Chittenden County, separate from Burlington. Use the street address and unit number when checking a school, account, journey or property rule. A postal ZIP, regional business name and municipal boundary answer different questions.
The map below follows the US Census Bureau’s city geometry, including the water area extending into Lake Champlain. It is an orientation map. It does not determine a parcel boundary, school placement, utility provider, flood risk or the route a vehicle can take.
Write down the ordinary destinations that matter to you: work, school, shopping, appointments, a walk or a regular activity. Try the journeys at the times you expect to use them. A place can be nearby on a map and still require a different entrance, crossing or travel arrangement.
Keep South Burlington’s City Hall and Public Library at 180 Market Street distinct from Burlington’s municipal offices. The city’s civic-center page identifies the shared building. Confirm the office and opening hours for your particular task before visiting.

Three parks for different outings
Choose an outing that suits the household: a short wooded walk, a lakeside visit or a longer nature trail. These three city parks have different entrances and facilities. Check the individual destination and current conditions before leaving home.
City Center Park
A wooded break near the civic and commercial center.
The city describes a seven-acre wooded park with a natural playground, benches, art and about half a mile of walking trails. It can make a manageable first outing while other arrival tasks remain unfinished.
Finding the entrance
The facility listing gives 30 Iby Street. Entrances also connect from Barrett Street, Market Street and Garden Street. Limited parking is available at the end of Iby Street; a nearby building’s parking is not automatically public park parking.
Before you go
The published hours are dawn to dusk. Select an entrance, look up the current path conditions and keep children’s supervision and accessibility needs in your plan.
Red Rocks Park
A lakeside park for a walk or a planned beach visit.
The city lists several miles of trails for walking, jogging, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, plus a beach and picnic facilities. Choose the activity and check its conditions rather than assuming the whole park offers the same access year-round.
Finding the entrance
The published address is 4 Central Avenue, South Burlington. The city notes limited parking outside the park throughout the year. Use the actual entrance and current instructions rather than a general Burlington waterfront destination.
Before you go
Hours are dawn to dusk. Portable toilets are seasonal, listed May through October. Check current water-quality notices before swimming, and use the separate reservation process for the pavilion.
Wheeler Nature Park
An open-ended nature walk with room to build a regular outdoor routine.
The city describes 119 acres with pedestrian trails and scenic areas for walking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The listed fenced off-leash dog area is a specific facility, not permission to let a dog run freely across every trail.
Finding the entrance
The facility entry identifies the parking lot off Swift Street. This is Wheeler Nature Park; Wheeler Homestead is a separate city listing. Follow the trail map for the particular route rather than combining the two entrances.
Before you go
Published hours are dawn to dusk. Read the current trail map, bring footwear suited to the conditions and confirm the relevant dog-area rules. Historical conservation discussions on the page do not establish today’s trail condition.

Choose a home by the routine and responsibilities
Compare the whole monthly commitment: rent or ownership costs, utilities, ordinary transport, parking and the services the household uses. Ask which bills are included, which you must arrange and who handles snow, repairs and waste. Put the answers beside each address so two properties can be compared fairly.
During a viewing, check actual usable space. Follow the route to a bedroom, bathroom and working area; consider furniture placement, storage and where arriving cartons can wait without blocking circulation. A room’s floor area is only part of how it works.
Renters can ask the owner about the city rental registry and inspection process. The city directs owners to register units and provides a complaint route and contact for questions. Its page notes exemptions for certain uses; ask about the actual property rather than treating a broad category as a compliance finding.
For ownership or renovation questions, confirm the parcel, permitted use and intended work with the appropriate city office and qualified professionals. Map layers can help locate a question, but they do not replace a survey or a property inspection.
Before committing to a location for remote work, test the internet option at the exact unit, the place for a desk and the household’s simultaneous needs. An advertised coverage area is not a booked connection. For downsizing, measure the pieces you want to keep and decide what will be stored or passed on while access remains straightforward.
Leave the room and its walking route usable while cartons wait to be unpacked.

Test a journey against the current timetable
Use GMT’s current schedules and live stop map for the address and day. Route 1 Williston lists South Burlington City Center and University Mall among its stops. Route 11 is now City Connector, with a South Burlington timetable centered on Timber Lane at Kennedy Drive and connections toward downtown Burlington. An older Airport-labelled timetable is not a current airport-trip plan.
Compare the outward and return trips, the walk to the stop, transfers and the last useful departure. Route tables differ by day and direction. If an airport, hospital or early shift is the reason for the move, check that exact destination and arrival time rather than inferring a direct trip from the route name.
GMT’s fare chart lists a regular single fare of $2, a daily cap of $4 and a 30-day cap of $50. The cap uses Ride Ready by GMT app or smart card; cash and contactless open payments are not capped. Cash requires the exact fare. Ask customer service about discount eligibility before relying on a reduced fare.
Check service alerts before travelling. Current September 2026 notices show construction detours affecting routes 1 and 11 toward downtown Burlington. They are dated operational notices, not permanent descriptions of every stop.
For cycling or walking, inspect the complete route, including road crossings and the section near home. Test a practical version in poor weather or darkness before making it the household’s only option. Keep a fallback for a journey whose timing cannot move.
Check the whole outward and return journey for the time and conditions you need.

Separate school enrollment from childcare
Use the South Burlington School District’s 2026–2027 registration page for a new student. It provides the Family Enrollment Portal and says all required documents must be on file before attendance. An online submission needs follow-up if documents or a receiving arrangement remain unresolved.
The required-documents page asks South Burlington families for one principal residency document, such as a current lease, mortgage/title or property tax bill, plus two accepted supporting documents dated within the last 60 days. Read the exact list and the alternative for living with another household; do not assume one address paper completes the requirement.
Birth/age verification, immunization records and any relevant legal documents have their own requirements. Prekindergarten and Act 166 paths differ. The main page and linked document page contain different preschool-location wording, so confirm the program and health forms directly instead of choosing a campus by inference.
The district has three elementary schools and supplies a Find My School map. Check the exact address, then confirm placement, transportation, the first attendance day and any support needs with the receiving school. Property ownership or a post-office box alone does not establish residency.
School’s Out is a licensed childcare program distinct from the school day. Its current 2026–2027 page says programs are at capacity and directs applicants to the waitlist; the waitlist resets annually. Confirm that status and arrange an alternative rather than treating school enrollment as an after-school place.

Set dates and responsibility for each account
Ask the owner or manager which utility serves the exact property and who holds each account. Record the provider, responsible person, requested start or stop date and any appointment. Follow up on a request until the service needed for arrival is actually arranged.
South Burlington’s Accounts & Services page says water billing also covers wastewater and stormwater. Bills normally go to the owner of record, unless the required landlord–tenant request is filed. Billing is quarterly, and a minimum usage fee applies unless termination at the curb stop is arranged.
The city’s water forms page links the property-owner agreement for tenant billing and separates new-location, meter and allocation applications. A normal account change and work creating a new connection should not be treated as one process. Contact the Water Division at 802-864-4361 about the property, transfer, final reading and effective dates.
For electricity, confirm the serving utility independently. Green Mountain Power’s new-customer guide directs customers to check its service-area map, call 888-835-4672 to establish service, then create an online account. This guide does not assign a provider solely from a South Burlington mailing address.
Schedule internet and any technical installation with access in mind. Ask whether someone must be present and test the connection before the first work session. Keep heat, essential lighting and account contacts accessible when moving in winter; a submitted account form is a different step from a working service.

Plan for cartons and items that need another destination
Confirm regular collection with the landlord, association or actual hauler. CSWD’s South Burlington Drop-Off Center at 87 Landfill Road is a separate option with limits: no trailers or dumping mechanisms, limited loads and no oversized furniture. Check current hours and the exact material before loading a vehicle.
Its page lists dry, clean, uncoated paper and cardboard among blue-bin materials. Separate packaging film, foam and other materials rather than treating every part of a moving box’s contents as recyclable. Use CSWD’s item lookup when the destination is unclear.
Do not plan a mattress, large appliance or large furniture trip based only on this site’s proximity. Confirm an accepting facility and its conditions for the specific item. The South Burlington page describes a tight site with limits, and facilities can differ.
Drop-off is self-service. Arrange a manageable way to unload, check fees and payment methods, and consult the closure information before leaving home. If a provider is removing packaging or unwanted items, confirm that work, destination and charges in its scope.
Keep the move, reuse and disposal groups visibly distinct. Agree with other household members before removing an item with shared ownership or sentimental value. Reducing the shipment works best when those decisions are made while there is still time for the chosen collection or handoff.
08 /
Check parking before the first delivery
Ask the landlord or association about resident, visitor and delivery spaces. Confirm whether a stall fits the household’s vehicle and where a moving truck is permitted to stand. A space useful for a car may leave no room for a loading route.
For city streets, the Highway FAQ publishes the winter restriction from midnight to 8 a.m., December 1 to April 1. Ask Public Works to confirm ownership if it is unclear, and clarify a move at the date boundary. Private streets require the owner’s instructions.
The City Center parking-management page describes development of a strategy around Market Street. It does not establish a current reservation, price or loading entitlement for a particular property. Follow the posted instruction and ask the responsible manager about the actual space.
Before arranging delivery, photograph the approach, standing area and route to the entrance. Pass the information to the provider and settle any public-space question with the responsible authority. Keep a feasible alternative if the preferred position is unavailable.
09 /
Make the first evening work
Confirm keys and door access before the shipment arrives. An apartment fob, garage control, service entrance and elevator can have separate arrangements. Identify an authorized receiving person who can answer questions without searching for management mid-delivery.
Use a simple room plan for bulky furniture, and keep the main circulation route clear as cartons arrive. Prioritize the sleeping space, bathroom and the basic food and work supplies needed next. Unpack the rooms that solve those needs before spreading every carton across the home.
For a household member with mobility or support needs, verify the real entrance, lift and internal route. A listing’s accessibility description may leave unanswered questions about daily use. Test the features that matter to that person.
Keep a personal arrival bag, relevant documents and essential contacts separate from the shipment. Plan children’s and pets’ whereabouts during the active move, and reserve room for a technical installer or another necessary appointment. The new home becomes usable through those arrangements as well as furniture delivery.
10 /
Prepare for winter and a changing road approach
Ask who clears the parking space, walkway, porch and shared passage after snow. Confirm the practical timing, where snow is piled and what happens if conditions change before delivery. A cleared car stall does not necessarily leave a clear carrying route.
Look up current city construction updates close to an important journey. The city lists work around Williston Road and I-89 and says schedules are estimates affected by weather. Planned improvements should not be treated as already open routes.
For outdoor outings, choose the individual park and current conditions. Red Rocks has seasonal facilities; Wheeler’s trails and fenced dog area have their own use. A dawn-to-dusk schedule does not describe ice, maintenance or accessibility on a particular day.
Keep one workable alternative for a disrupted journey, account appointment or key handover. Put the person who can decide and the next contact beside it. A fallback is most useful when it is arranged before you need it.
Assign clearing from the standing space through the entrance before winter delivery.

Build a first week around useful places
Start with a small set of tasks that make ordinary life possible: the outstanding account action, school contact, shopping and a tested work journey. Leave room for an office visit that needs another document. Check the exact location and hours before setting out.
The South Burlington Public Library is at 180 Market Street. Its card policy lets eligible residents over five obtain a card with identification showing name and current legal address. People employed in South Burlington have a separate proof-of-employment route. Ask staff what suits your circumstances.
Look up an activity or resource you would actually use: reading, technology help, a children’s program or a borrowing service. Check the program’s current arrangements.
Try one of the city parks described below, choosing the particular entrance and activity. A short City Center walk, a Red Rocks outing and a Wheeler trail visit serve different purposes. Make enjoyable stops part of the routine without filling the first week with commitments.
After several ordinary days, adjust errands and room placement to what the household uses. If the physical move is still being arranged, the South Burlington moving page covers service choices, estimates, packing and delivery.
A reading visit can become part of the first week’s routine.

Questions before you arrive
Does this guide cover Burlington or all Chittenden County?
It concerns South Burlington city. Burlington is a separate municipality; regional connections are identified as such. The Census map includes the city’s water area and does not represent a postal or service boundary.
Can the city map tell me which school serves the address?
Use the district’s Find My School tool and confirm the exact address with the receiving school. The municipal outline is not an elementary attendance map.
Is submitting online registration enough for a school start?
The district says all required documents must be on file before attendance. Follow up on the receiving school, documents, start day and transportation.
Does school registration include a School’s Out place?
School’s Out is a separate childcare program. Its current page reports capacity limits and a waitlist; confirm availability and keep another childcare plan.
Do renters automatically receive city water bills?
The city normally bills the property owner. Tenant billing requires the owner agreement; check responsibility, effective dates and the actual property with the Water Division.
Is Route 11 still an Airport timetable?
The current GMT route is City Connector. Use current schedules and the live map for the exact destination and day; old route naming does not prove an airport connection.
Will paying by contactless bank card earn GMT fare caps?
GMT’s current chart says open contactless payments and cash are not capped. Caps apply through the Ride Ready app or smart card; confirm the payment method and any discount with GMT.
Can a trailer take a move-out load to the local CSWD site?
The South Burlington site prohibits trailers and dumping mechanisms and limits sizes and loads. Confirm another appropriate destination for material that does not meet its conditions.
Is City Center parking already reserved for a delivery?
The strategy page does not grant a particular parking or loading right. Check posted restrictions, management instructions and the responsible public authority for your arrangement.
Which park is convenient for a short City Center walk?
City Center Park has several entrances and short trails. Choose the entrance that suits the trip and confirm current conditions; Red Rocks and Wheeler serve different outings.
