New York / City relocation guide

Moving to East Rochester, New York

A useful address fits the journeys, rooms and responsibilities of the people living there. Check those details before signing, then connect the handover to school, utility and first-week arrangements.

Know which East Rochester address you are choosing

This guide concerns the incorporated village of East Rochester in Monroe County, New York, Census GEOID 3622865. The municipal history timeline records the formation of coterminous government in 1981; local services are presented under the Town/Village name. This is a different place from East Rochester in New Hampshire.

Check the street address and parcel before relying on the mailing name. The 14445 postal area is not the boundary used for this guide, and neither a postal label nor this orientation map establishes school eligibility or a utility connection. Ask the responsible provider about the full address and unit number.

Compare homes against the routine you need

Write down the journeys that must work: employment, school, medical care, shopping and the people you visit regularly. Test both the outbound and return trip at the times you actually need them. Include a backup for bad weather or a missed connection.

For a household with children, resolve school placement and daily travel before treating a property as suitable. For someone reducing car use, check the walk to the relevant stop and the last trip home. For remote work, verify service installation, signal and a usable work area. For a smaller household, compare storage and access as carefully as room count.

Give each property a short list of verified strengths, unresolved questions and recurring costs. A low advertised rent or asking price does not describe the whole cost of living there.

04 /

Inspect the rooms and the approach together

Measure the pieces you intend to keep against the receiving rooms and the route into them. Open doors and check stairs, narrow turns, storage access and where everyday furniture will stand. Confirm laundry arrangements, heating controls, usable outlets and how much floor space remains once the furniture is placed.

Ask about maintenance history, water entry, repairs and responsibilities. Visit at a time when you can assess surrounding activity; local industrial history does not determine current noise at a specific home. For mobility needs, inspect the entire path from vehicle or sidewalk through the entrance to bathroom and sleeping space.

Keep photographs and the dimensions that affect your choice. Resolve a difficult carrying route before buying a large replacement piece or agreeing a delivery date.

05 /

Separate the agreement from the key handover

For a rental, record the exact unit, possession date, deposit terms, included utilities, parking spaces and responsibility for snow and waste. Ask the landlord about approved occupancy and any relevant property requirements; direct code or permit questions to the Building Department. A published contractor rule is not a substitute for checking the rental itself.

For a purchase, review the property records and planned work with the appropriate advisers and department. Confirm the final walkthrough, key transfer, utility arrangements and anything the seller must remove. A scheduled closing does not mean the home is already available to receive furniture.

Keep a short fallback plan if possession slips: where you will stay, who confirms readiness and which belongings must remain accessible.

06 /

Start registration with the district and the actual residence

The East Rochester Union Free School District registration page offers an online pre-registration portal or a mailed packet through the registrar at 585-248-6306. Its current instructions request the child’s birth certificate, proof of residency, immunization records and most recent physical. Confirm the accepted documents and requirements for your circumstances directly.

The page lists packet delivery at the high-school Single Point of Entry or the District Office mailbox, and a mailing address of 222 Woodbine Avenue. Check current submission arrangements before visiting. Ask about placement, start date, records transfer and support needs early enough to resolve missing information.

School transportation needs a separate address and student check. The district transportation page lists forms and current procurement documents; those documents alone do not promise a bus route or eligibility for an individual student. Confirm the daily arrangement with the district.

07 /

Use a current timetable and test the whole journey

The RTS Monroe maps and schedules page identifies schedules effective September 7, 2026. It links the 50 Fairport/Penfield schedule, whose own cover carries a June 29, 2026 effective date. Check with RTS which timetable applies to your travel date, then use the current route map and timetable to check the stop serving the address, walking connection, transfer and return time. A route name does not establish that every East Rochester home has the same access.

Verify weekday, weekend and holiday operation separately. If a journey needs another service, ask RTS about the current connection and eligibility. Keep a backup for a missed final trip, a change of work hours or a winter walk that takes longer than expected.

Drivers should test their own departure and return, including parking at the destination. Regional proximity is not a promised commute time, and a passenger-car route does not prove a large moving vehicle can use every turn or entrance.

Resolve water billing before possession changes

East Rochester’s DPW FAQs direct water-main, hydrant, meter and water-bill questions to the Monroe County Water Authority. Start with MCWA Customer Service to confirm the account and property situation.

MCWA’s customer-care FAQs state that the property owner remains responsible for water bills, even if bills are sent in care of an occupant. Renters should record how the lease allocates payment and who handles account questions. That owner-liability statement does not settle the terms of an individual lease.

For a purchase or sale, use MCWA’s property-transfer instructions and confirm the information required for the closing. Establish the intended billing start and the party handling the transfer rather than assuming a postal change transfers the account.

09 /

Check sewer, heat and connections at the property

The municipal street-maintenance page distinguishes the public sewer mains from the homeowner’s lateral connection. Ask about the lateral’s condition and any known work when evaluating a home; municipal maintenance of a main does not establish the condition of the private connection.

Confirm the existing electricity and gas accounts with the property owner and provider, then arrange the dates and access needed to start service. Check the home’s actual heating fuel, equipment and controls rather than inferring them from the town name. Have a qualified person handle disconnection or installation that requires specialist work.

Check broadband availability for the precise unit, installation lead time and equipment requirements. If work or medical equipment depends on a connection, arrange a tested fallback while the account is being established. Provider availability and municipal boundaries are different checks.

10 /

Arrange collection before discarding the old household

The DPW collection FAQs distinguish normal weekly refuse from bulky items such as furniture, mattresses and appliances. They say special pickup can be arranged and may carry a fee. Use the street pickup schedule and confirm your service, collection day and bulky-item arrangements before setting anything out.

Weekly refuse guidance gives properly contained trash, cans no larger than 35 gallons and no heavier than 50 pounds. Ask DPW about move-related volumes, carton recycling and the applicable current instructions; a large pile left at the curb is not automatically ordinary collection.

For electronics, chemicals and other special materials, check the specific item against Monroe County ecopark rules before travelling. The facility handles listed residential recycling streams and has appointment requirements for household hazardous waste. It is not a general dump for an entire unwanted household. Company packaging-waste removal, if requested, is a separate moving service with a separate charge.

11 /

Choose public places you will actually use

The municipal parks page lists Concrest Park, Edmund Lyon Park, Legion Eyer Park and Northside Park. Edmund Lyon includes open green space and recreation facilities; Legion Eyer includes ball fields, a pavilion and Quinzi Lodge. Check current access, reservations and facility conditions before planning a gathering or activity.

The East Rochester Public Library listing is a starting point for current location, hours and contact information. The county library-card guidance describes free cards for Monroe County residents and requests identification showing county residency. Confirm the accepted documents, the particular service you need and program registration. Build a first-week plan around useful visits instead of assuming every listed facility is open whenever you arrive.

Check food shopping, prescriptions and routine appointments against your actual travel. Move essential records and arrange ongoing care before running out of supplies; a nearby address does not guarantee appointment availability.

12 /

Check the parcel and records before relying on a map

Use the FEMA Flood Map Service Center for address-based flood information and review the applicable map and documents with the appropriate adviser. Ask the owner about past water entry, drainage and insurance requirements. A village boundary map cannot determine whether a particular basement or parcel is suitable for storage.

For planned exterior work, access changes or another use of a building, check records and requirements with the Town/Village. Retain inspection and approval information relevant to your decision. Unresolved maintenance or permitted-use questions should remain visible in your property comparison.

13 /

Plan everyday parking and delivery separately

Before choosing a home, confirm which parking space belongs to the unit, whether it is shared and how visitors or a second car are handled. Walk the connection to the entrance with the belongings you regularly carry. Ask the owner how snow or another vehicle changes the available space.

A household parking arrangement does not establish a suitable place for a moving truck. Share the intended standing position, entry and exit with the planning team and confirm private access with the owner. For public space, check signs and ask the responsible municipal department about the proposed operation and date. Keep a workable alternative if the first position is unavailable.

14 /

Make winter responsibilities explicit

East Rochester’s snow-plowing page gives the seasonal street-parking restriction of 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., November 15 through April 15, and says vehicles must not block sidewalks. It also assigns occupants or owners the remaining sidewalk snow or ice after plowing. Confirm the current requirements and who performs the work at the property.

Ask where a car can stand overnight, who clears the entrance and steps, and where snow can be stored without blocking the route. Before delivery, agree a clear standing place and continuous path to the door. Plowing a public road does not ensure that a private entrance is ready for carrying furniture.

Keep winter clothing and the supplies needed for the first night accessible. Check current weather and travel conditions near the move date, and tell the planning team when access changes.

15 /

Keep a receiving day checklist

  • Confirm keys, possession and the person directing furniture placement.
  • Check the agreed vehicle position, entrances, lighting and walking routes.
  • Record meter/account arrangements and essential maintenance contacts.
  • Make sleeping, bathroom and basic food arrangements usable first.
  • Keep documents, medicines and chargers apart from the main unpacking.

Use the moving-services page for the inventory and work scope. The household arrangements above continue after the shipment has arrived.

16 /

Close the remaining household gaps

Confirm the school start, transport arrangement, utility dates and records-transfer status. Check collection days before putting out cartons or bulky items. Test the commute and return trip again from the home, including the walk or parking connection.

Visit the resources that matter to your routine, check any bookings and keep the current contact information with your household records. If a property question remains unresolved, send it to its owner with the full address and the decision you need; do not treat an unanswered question as permission.
