New York / City relocation guide

A practical guide to living in Pittsford, New York

A canal-side village address can put local shops, public resources and residential streets close together. Before choosing a home, test how the exact address works for your household, accounts and weekly journeys.

01 /

Know which Pittsford you are choosing

This guide covers the incorporated Village of Pittsford in Monroe County, New York, Census GEOID 3658354. It sits within the larger Town of Pittsford. A listing that says Pittsford or uses ZIP 14534 does not by itself establish village jurisdiction, school placement or a particular utility connection.

The Village introduction describes the Erie Canal waterfront, historic buildings and village business center. Use that as orientation, then visit the proposed home and trace the journeys you actually need. The map below shows the Census village boundary, not a parcel survey or school, flood, utility or delivery-permission map. Village Hall at 21 North Main Street can help route a village question to the responsible department.

Compare the whole home and the cost of living there

Walk through each candidate with the daily routine in mind: entrance, stairs, bedroom and bathroom access, work area, storage and the route outside. Measure the furniture you plan to retain against rooms and turns. Check which parking and outdoor spaces belong to the unit and which are shared. For downsizing, decide what fits before arranging the shipment.

Ask for a clear account of rent or purchase obligations, deposits, recurring charges, heat, water, waste and internet. Confirm who handles maintenance, snow clearance and equipment faults. Inspect the actual condition and relevant records with qualified help when needed. Canal proximity or an attractive older exterior does not establish flood status, sound systems or a completed permit history; investigate the parcel separately.

04 /

Ask about rental registration and planned alterations

The Village rental-registration page states that short- and long-term rental properties must be registered from January 1, 2025 and undergo safety and compliance inspections. Ask the owner about the property’s current registration and authorized use before committing. The owner’s registration is a different matter from your lease, deposit, keys and delivery arrangements.

The Building Department advises contacting it about exterior changes visible from the street or canal. Its FAQs explain that permit applications depend on required approvals, and that deeds are generally maintained by the Monroe County Clerk rather than comprehensively held at Village Hall. Obtain the right records for the work you are considering; do not schedule alterations on the strength of a listing description.

05 /

Start enrollment with the registrar and the address

The Pittsford Central School District registration page offers online and paper forms. After receiving the packet, the Central Registrar contacts the family about needed age and residency documentation. Call 585-267-1027 if you need a packet or have questions. Share prior records, language or support needs and any special circumstances early.

Ask the registrar to confirm school placement, the start date and transportation using the actual residence. The currently linked Enrollment Procedures PDF is dated June 1, 2015; its address-based placement and shared-housing guidance are useful starting points, but the current office should confirm the procedure for your family. If ordinary documents are unavailable, ask about appropriate alternatives promptly. A nearby school or postal address does not assign a seat, program or bus route.

06 /

Build a weekly journey plan using current RTS information

Check the trip from your front door to work, school, shops and appointments at the times you will use it. Include walking to a pickup point, transfers, the last return and a backup. Test a road commute rather than relying on a distance or an unmeasured promise of minutes to Rochester.

RTS On Demand currently says weekend service ended September 7, 2026 and weekday service runs until 8 p.m. Its Pittsford/Eastview zone PDF lists Monday–Friday 5 a.m.–8 p.m., reservations and connections including St. John Fisher. Confirm that both addresses lie in the relevant zone, the pickup arrangement and the return. The PDF’s holiday wording and older general text are not fully consistent with the current service notice; verify holiday travel directly at 585-288-1700. On Demand is a shared ride, not a guaranteed direct commute.

Check the actual departure, return and backup for the journeys you need.

07 /

Check the address for remote work and off-site travel

Ask internet providers whether service can be ordered for the exact unit, how the installation will occur and the earliest confirmed date. Ask the owner about internal wiring and test mobile reception indoors. Keep a temporary connection plan for the period between possession and installation.

If you regularly travel beyond the village, test the door-to-door journey with your schedule and baggage. Allow for parking, check-in, transfers and the return home. A canal-side setting can be appealing for breaks without resolving an airport trip or a late shift. Compare the household’s actual needs with available transport before signing.

08 /

Separate service connections from account responsibilities

Ask the owner which company bills electricity, gas and water, whether charges are included, and how sewer charges appear. Record meter and account responsibilities and the handover dates. For an address served by RG&E, its moving page provides start and stop requests; review the required information through the utility’s secure channel and keep the confirmed dates.

For an MCWA-served property, the buying/selling page has a purchase form and seller account process. Its customer FAQ says the property owner remains responsible for water bills, even when bills are sent in care of an occupant. Agree the rental arrangement explicitly. Village DPW monitors sanitary and storm sewers; confirm the actual connections and responsible account rather than using village membership to assign every system.

09 /

Use the Village collection arrangement and item rules

The Village refuse-district announcement says its residential program began June 1, 2025, with weekly Monday trash and recycling collection through Seyrek, acquired by Casella. It gives 585-823-3487 for service updates, tote changes and requested bulky pickups, which have an additional fee. Check the current calendar, property account and holiday changes before setting things out; the launch-year fee is not a quote for your current bill.

The Village DPW FAQs distinguish brush work from appliances, couches and household items that need the waste hauler. Do not leave unwanted furniture expecting DPW pickup. The DPW page contains conflicting bagging instructions and season dates without a clear year; ask the department about the current method. Town refuse-district information concerns a separate program and should not be applied to a village home simply because both say Pittsford.

10 /

Plan bulky and hazardous disposal before departure

Monroe County ecopark is a residential recycling resource at 10 Avion Drive. Household hazardous waste requires an appointment; many other accepted items do not. Review the item list, preparation, residency conditions, current hours and any fee before travelling. Ordinary household garbage, building materials and mattresses are among the stated exclusions.

Keep recycling, usable donations, bulky waste and hazardous items separate while sorting. Ask the relevant recipient or hauler about each route and arrange collection before the move where possible. A county recycling center is not a general furniture dump, and a moving shipment is not an assumed disposal service. Keep a copy of any agreed pickup and removal arrangement.

11 /

Use the library as a practical first-week resource

Pittsford Community Library is at 24 State Street, phone 585-248-6275. It lists technology services, study rooms and programs alongside its collections. Check the current hours and availability of the service or room you need rather than assuming everything is open whenever the building is.

The library-card page describes eligibility and accepted identity/address documents. Bring appropriate documentation and ask at the desk if your address records are still changing. A digital E-Card provides digital collection access; the page explains how to obtain fuller privileges in person. Check current fees and return arrangements before borrowing, especially if you are moving again soon.

12 /

Arrange continuity of care before the move

Identify a practice that can meet each family member’s needs, confirm acceptance and insurance, and request the transfer of records before you need a visit. The regional Rochester Internal Medicine Associates at the Schottland Family YMCA page lists an adult practice at 2300 West Jefferson Road, Suite 400, with appointment and first-visit information. Its location is a regional resource, not a village assignment or an assurance of an appointment.

Keep medicines, a current list, care records and essential equipment with you. Check the journey to the practice, pharmacy and regular treatment. If mobility needs affect housing, assess the everyday route to bedrooms, bathing and outside access, as well as the one-time furniture delivery. Contact appropriate providers directly about clinical or access requirements.

13 /

Explore programs and the canal at your own pace

Pittsford Recreation lists programs and facility reservations at the Spiegel Community Center, 35 Lincoln Avenue, phone 585-248-6280. The Senior Citizens page gives 585-248-6235 for programs and advance luncheon reservations. Review eligibility, registration, dates and access for the specific activity; a general program list does not guarantee a place.

The NYS Canal Corporation trail page provides rules and a link to current trail alerts. Its dawn-to-dusk guidance applies to Corporation-owned segments; confirm the part you intend to use. Explore the village’s canal setting without treating the trail as a delivery route or overlooking a closure. Use current notices when planning a walk, ride or visit.

14 /

Reserve practical delivery space with its owner

Before confirming delivery, inspect signs and agree where the selected vehicle can stand. The Village parking guidance includes winter overnight restrictions and clear fire access. Its FAQ requires parking with traffic. The parking map link is reference guidance; current signs and the responsible owner determine what arrangement is available on the day.

Private space needs the owner’s agreement and sufficient entry, standing and exit room. Ask Village Hall about any public-road approval needed for the date and operation. This guide has not established a universal moving permit or an exemption from posted rules. Keep a fallback for occupied spaces and give the moving team the confirmed arrangement.

15 /

Prepare the keys and the route to each room

Record the key handover time, receiving contact and who can approve a different entrance. Measure the narrowest turns against the furniture, photograph steps and landings and agree any building work window. Keep shared doors and emergency routes clear, with room to move cartons out of circulation as they arrive.

For a rental, keep condition photographs and the landlord’s contact available. For a purchase, confirm possession through the responsible closing parties. If your dates change, update household accounts, travel and the moving plan together. A ready inventory cannot compensate for keys that have not been released.

16 /

Assign snow clearance and check heat

For a winter arrival, confirm who clears the authorized vehicle position, walkway and steps, and when the work will be completed. Village DPW plows public streets and sidewalks; that does not establish clearance of your private approach. Recheck signs, weather and actual ground conditions near the date.

Confirm working heat, lighting and a safe entrance with the owner. Keep snow piles out of the agreed standing and walking routes. Pack first-night supplies separately and identify what happens if travel or possession slips. An illustration of winter access cannot establish conditions at a particular home.

17 /

Use a manageable arrival checklist

Before possession
  • Confirm village jurisdiction, key timing, household accounts and delivery access.
  • Contact the registrar, care providers and any program you need.
  • Test daily journeys and arrange a backup for service or schedule gaps.
On arrival
  • Record condition and agreed meter readings with the owner.
  • Make sleeping, bathroom, food and essential walking space usable first.
  • Keep papers, medicines and chargers accessible while cartons are sorted.
During the first week
  • Verify account starts, school arrangements and appointment records.
  • Confirm waste days, bulky pickup and recycling before setting out items.
  • Check library and community resources against your real routine.

Questions before you arrive

Is this guide for the whole Town of Pittsford?

It focuses on the incorporated village, GEOID 3658354. Check the parcel separately; the town and Pittsford mailing area are larger.

Do village rentals need registration?

The Village page states that short- and long-term rentals require registration from January 1, 2025. Ask the owner about the property’s current registration and approved use.

How do we start school registration?

Use the PCSD online or paper packet, or call the Central Registrar at 585-267-1027. Confirm placement, documentation, support needs, start date and transportation for the actual residence.

Can we rely on RTS On Demand on weekends?

The current RTS notice says weekend service ended September 7, 2026. Check current alternatives and holiday operation directly; do not use an old timetable as a weekend plan.

Will Village DPW collect an unwanted couch?

Its FAQs direct household items and appliances to the waste hauler. Arrange the bulky item pickup and fee before putting it out.

Is ecopark a general rubbish drop-off?

It accepts listed residential recycling streams and appointment-based household hazardous waste. It excludes ordinary household garbage, building materials and mattresses; check the specific item first.

Does the village map assign my utilities or school?

It shows the Census incorporated place boundary. Parcel conditions, school placement, utility connections and vehicle access need their own checks.

Can a winter move override street parking restrictions?

A moving booking does not establish an exception. Arrange a lawful standing position with the property and road owners before delivery.
