Moving to New Brunswick, NJ: choose a home and settle in
Compare the City’s downtown apartments, campus-side connections and residential streets through the home and the week you need. Then connect current travel, school registration, household accounts and a confirmed arrival arrangement.
Compare the usable home and shared entrance with the central street and weekly walking routes. Representative illustration, not an exact property.

Choose the home together with the week it needs to support
Still choosing an address? Start with the five area comparisons and the housing checklist. Visit with the same questions about rooms, total cost, everyday trips and shared space. A downtown apartment, an interior residential street and a home toward Rutgers Village can offer very different routines within the same city.
Moving with children? Establish the municipality and the child's grade, start district registration and arrange the school-day journey alongside the adult commute. A school beside a prospective home is a place to locate, not a confirmed assignment or a promise of a seat.
Already chose the home? Work through utilities, collection, parking, winter responsibilities and the arrival plan. Put an actual contact and decision date beside each unfinished arrangement. The New Brunswick moving page explains Sterling Oakbridge's service options and estimate process; this guide helps you choose and prepare the household setting.

Locate the City, its different settings and the two stations
This guide covers New Brunswick city in Middlesex County, New Jersey. North Brunswick, East Brunswick, Highland Park and Piscataway are separate municipalities. A New Brunswick mailing label or the 08901 ZIP does not establish the city responsible for a property, its school assignment or its household collection.
The center around George, Albany and Bayard Streets; the College Avenue and Easton Avenue connections; French Street and Joyce Kilmer Avenue; Livingston Avenue and the Pine/Nichol Street side; and Rutgers Village/Townsend make useful starting comparisons. These are approximate search settings, not five official neighborhood districts. Rutgers–New Brunswick is a university name spanning several settings and municipalities: Busch and Livingston campuses are in Piscataway. Check the particular address around the Cook–Douglass edge rather than treating the campus name as a municipal boundary.
The City's master-plan index and 2025 reexamination provide physical and planning context. The land-use map with a January 18, 2022 footer helps distinguish the mixed-use center, institutional areas and lower-rise residential streets. Its age matters: an old map does not establish today's business, a vacant apartment or a current zoning entitlement. The reexamination's recommendations are proposals for planning decisions, not permission for a particular home conversion.
The original orientation map retains the complete Census municipal outline and mapped roads, water and rail. Numbered markers identify approximate search settings. Station points come from NJ Transit's published location links; other public-place markers use Census street-address interpolation. They locate a vicinity, not a surveyed entrance. Use the map to connect the area comparison with a real visit and the correct station.
Use the numbered key to compare five search settings. Search markers are approximate; the map does not show school or neighborhood boundaries or legal truck directions. Explore the map.

Five home-and-routine comparisons
Start with the routines and property features that matter to your household. These selected areas help you compare; school assignment and building access have their own checks below.
Downtown / station and George Street
A compact mixed-use comparison around George, Albany and Bayard Streets, with civic, commercial and residential uses close together.
Compare the unit’s usable rooms and shared building access, street exposure, included storage and any paid parking. A central address does not settle those conditions.
Daily travel
Begin with the downtown Northeast Corridor station and the actual platform approach. Apply the current eastbound elevator notice and the timetable for the travel date.
Before choosing
Walk the shopping return with bags and the evening route. Inspect the actual entrance and accepting window, not simply the visible shopfront.
College Avenue / Easton and Buccleuch connections
An institutional and residential setting on the College Avenue and Easton Avenue side, with Buccleuch Park as a useful northern public-place reference.
Establish whether the home is a private rental, a shared house or university housing, which rooms and storage belong to the agreement, and who maintains common areas.
Daily travel
Compare the walk toward downtown rail and the actual Rutgers bus connection. Semester and weekend bus patterns differ; private housing is not automatically part of a campus service arrangement.
Before choosing
Try the whole school or work day and the late return. Inspect the actual street rather than infer traffic or quietness from its distance to a campus.
French Street / Joyce Kilmer connections
Central residential and mixed-use streets between the downtown connections and the Joyce Kilmer Avenue side. The park at 143 Joyce Kilmer Avenue provides a concrete visit point.
In a smaller multi-unit or converted home, verify the correct entrance, shared stair, unit-specific storage and utility allocation. Compare usable room dimensions with retained furniture.
Daily travel
Test the actual walk or bus to the selected destination and the return with groceries. Do not turn a central position on a map into a guaranteed commute.
Before choosing
Connect the chosen front door with the school assignment, shop and park entrance. Establish the collector and parking zone for that precise address.
Livingston Avenue / Pine and Cook–Douglass edge
The Livingston Avenue corridor and residential connections toward Pine, Nichol and the Cook–Douglass side provide a different comparison from the downtown center.
Compare older street-facing homes and smaller buildings through their actual stairs, room use, shared space and included outdoor or basement areas.
Daily travel
Use the library and Recreation Park as concrete ordinary destinations, then test the selected campus or work route. Confirm the municipality of the home near the campus edge.
Before choosing
Check the school-day journey, collection arrangement and winter responsibility. A campus label does not assign a City service or grant use of a particular building.
Rutgers Village / Townsend side
The City’s eastern lower-rise residential setting, with Murphy Park at 131 Tunison Road as a useful public-place reference. It is distinct from the downtown station area.
Inspect the retained furniture route, private or shared storage, outdoor upkeep and any driveway or garage rights in the actual agreement.
Daily travel
Build the complete trip to downtown rail, work, school and shopping from the specific address. Include the return and a realistic alternative when a connection does not operate.
Before choosing
Visit the park approach and try the ordinary errands. Establish the City address, school assignment and collector without borrowing a neighboring municipality’s rules.
04 /
Compare usable space, written terms and the whole household cost
New Brunswick's housing includes detached homes, attached homes and apartments of very different sizes. The 2020–2024 Census structure table estimates 16,854 housing units: 3,609 detached units, 1,176 attached units, 4,628 units in two-to-four-unit buildings and 4,266 units in buildings containing at least 20 units. These are counts of housing units, not buildings. The figures are survey estimates with sampling uncertainty; they describe the stock during that period, not the homes available today.
Compare the same whole-home conditions at each viewing
Decision
Establish for this home
What it changes
Payment and initial cash
Current written rent or purchase terms, deposit, itemized fees and recurring building charges
The payment for this agreement and the funds needed before arrival
Utilities and shared work
Who pays each utility, how shared charges are documented, and who maintains common spaces and snow routes
The bills and responsibilities beyond the advertised payment
Actual rooms and storage
Usable dimensions, laundry, included closets and the precise private or shared basement, attic or garage rights
Whether retained belongings fit and which storage the household may use
Ordinary trips
Work, school or care, food shopping, evening return and weekend journeys
Whether the household can repeat its real week from this address
Receiving the household
Keys, entrance, stair turns or lift, any reservation and an accepting contact
Whether the selected arrival can actually enter the home
Inspect the floor plan on foot. In a converted or smaller multi-unit house, establish which entrance serves the unit, whether a stair is shared and where a large retained piece must turn. In a managed apartment building, include the common corridor and lift as well as the rooms. The official Brunswick gallery, for example, shows a compact kitchen opening into a living area. It is a useful reason to inspect circulation and furniture positions, not evidence that a pictured unit is available or that its public-facing entrance is the service entrance.
For renting, New Brunswick's Rent Control Office lists a 3.3% allowable annual increase for 2026 for regulated rents. That number does not cap every advertised new lease. The coverage rules include exceptions, including rents in an owner-occupied two-family property even though registration is still required. Private housing near Rutgers is not exempt simply because students live there. An approved vacancy-decontrol application can also affect the lawful starting rent; an application alone is not approval. Before comparing an uncertain offer, ask the office for the unit's classification, registered base and any applicable exemption or approved change.
If a tenant pays water, ask how the actual bill is allocated and documented. The City's rent-control guidance says the landlord must show the water bill and may not impose a fixed water charge. Resolve the arrangement with the office and the written terms for the particular unit rather than treating a flat added amount as self-explanatory.
Inspect the kitchen-to-dining route, furniture positions and included storage. One compact closed Book carton rests beside the cabinet outside the passage; representative illustration.

Choose a train and return journey, not just a station pin
Downtown New Brunswick station is on the Northeast Corridor, at French and Albany Streets between Easton Avenue and George Street. Jersey Avenue station, farther southwest off Jersey Avenue/Route 91, is also on that line, but it is not an interchangeable all-day starting point. Compare the current departures and the return before choosing the home around either station.
October 11–November 14, 2026: NJ Transit is using temporary schedules for the Portal Bridge cutover. The temporary weekday Northeast Corridor table concentrates Jersey Avenue's New York-bound departures in the morning. The temporary weekend table shows no regular New York-bound Jersey Avenue departure for a daytime outward trip, although a few after-midnight trains arrive there in the other direction. Use downtown New Brunswick as the starting comparison for a two-way weekend rail day. Regular schedules are expected November 15, subject to safety testing; check the timetable applying to the actual date.
Step-free travel needs a separate decision. NJ Transit currently posts the downtown eastbound elevator out of service until further notice. A general accessible-station badge does not resolve this outage. Before making the journey or committing to a home around it, arrange the operator-confirmed station and ground connection that meet the traveler's needs. The westbound waiting-room closure is a different notice: it does not say the westbound platform is closed.
Driving to a train creates a separate parking arrangement. The station listings identify the lot operators and paid options; they do not promise a space. At Jersey Avenue, Lot 1 has staged closures from September 21 through late 2026, with overflow across Jersey Avenue. Include the real walk and crossing from the usable lot. Add the journey from the destination station to the actual workplace and the last usable return, including a late finish.
Test the actual crossing, platform approach and return for the bags or mobility aid the household uses. Representative illustration, not a station accessibility record.
06 /
Test a complete week without a car
The downtown and College Avenue connections are useful places to begin comparing a walking-and-transit household because they connect the central streets, downtown rail and the university bus network. That is a geographic starting point, not a guarantee that every errand is convenient. Visit the selected address and complete the actual grocery trip with bags, the school or care journey and an evening return. A shorter straight-line distance can still include a difficult crossing or the wrong platform approach.
The City's transportation directory lists NJ Transit routes 810, 811, 814, 815 and 818. Use the operator's bus timetable selector for the precise route, stop, direction, operating day and return. Route 810 connects New Brunswick and Woodbridge Center; the existence of a route does not establish its frequency or a late service.
Rutgers' regular New Brunswick campus buses are free and do not require ID during normal operating hours. They have different weekday, weekend and All Campuses patterns, with current tracking through TripShot. Confirm the semester or break schedule and the connection the household actually needs. The separate Knight Mover service requires Rutgers affiliation and ID, is requested when ready and cannot be reserved in advance. It is not a general public overnight ride home.
Give each essential trip a usable return and fallback
Trip to test
Complete the ordinary route
If it does not work
Work or study
Walk to the correct platform or stop, make the destination connection and return after a realistic late finish
Compare a different usable station or stop and the cost of a prearranged ride
Food shopping
Carry the usual bags from the selected shop to the home, including the last stair or lift
Price an actual delivery option or a planned shopping ride that serves the address
School, care or appointments
Include check-in, dismissal, care hours and the adult's next journey
Arrange a confirmed collection or care contact before relying on the week
Evenings and weekends
Check the actual service day, last return and the route after dark
Set aside funds for a confirmed alternative rather than assuming daytime service continues
The City's Dial-A-Ride is a separate eligible-resident service for people aged 60 or older, people with disabilities or low-income residents, with specified appointment and service purposes. It requires at least two business days' notice. It cannot fill an unplanned general shopping or nighttime trip simply because the passenger lives in the City.
07 /
Start school registration with the address and the child’s grade
For a home in New Brunswick City, begin with New Brunswick Public Schools' K–12 registration survey. Staff then contact the family. Prepare the parent or guardian's photo ID, the child's birth certificate, custody records if applicable, prior school records, immunization information and two accepted address proofs, such as a current lease and utility bill. The district also requests household-income information. Follow the current registration instructions for the child's actual grade and year.
The district's registration FAQ explains that children are enrolled at the school zoned for the address. A nearby school building or the school shown in a property advertisement does not settle the assignment. If you seek another school within the district, the application goes through the assigned school and needs the specified principal and superintendent approvals; district transportation is not provided for an approved out-of-zone placement.
If address records or school papers are incomplete, contact registration rather than waiting silently. The FAQ provides a district residency-verification process when normal address proofs are unavailable, assistance obtaining prior records and a process for missing documents. If online registration is not workable, request a phone appointment. The district lists registrationappointments@nbpsnj.net and 732-745-5300, extension 3205. Its typical processing estimate follows completed documents and is not a guaranteed start date.
For 2026–27 preschool registration, the posted conditions include City residency and a child aged three by October 15. October 15 is the birthday cutoff, not a statement that applications close that day. Contact Early Childhood at extension 4060 or ec_registrations@nbpsnj.net for the child's situation, current placement process and documents. Arrange the daily trip, dismissal and any before- or after-school care separately from completing registration.
08 /
Connect the actual accounts and settle who pays each bill
PSE&G's service territory lists New Brunswick City for both electricity and gas. Before arrival, establish whether each account is the occupant's responsibility or is included through the owner or building. Use the utility's start, stop or move service process with the exact service address and dates. Prepare the requested identity and contact details, and check whether a deposit is required. For a transfer, arrange both the old stop and new start, with a forwarding address for the final bill; do not assume the landlord's contact switches the account.
The City's water and sewer page identifies City water service and Finance's billing role. Ask the owner or closing contact which account is attached to the property, who pays and what must be completed for this transaction. The online utility route uses the account and PIN; a tenant should establish the lawful billing arrangement rather than invent a separate account-transfer procedure. The posted billing contact is 732-745-5062.
Delivery and energy supply are different parts of a bill. The latest visible update on the City's energy-aggregation page is dated August 31, 2023 and reports no new supplier award. It does not establish an active 2026 municipal discount or automatic enrollment. Compare the actual supply line and current terms on the account before budgeting a saving.
Book internet against the unit, not just the street. Ask for the actual serviceability, installation date and any building access needed. Keep power, gas, water/sewer and internet confirmations together with the owner or utility contact who can resolve a missing start. If an essential service is not confirmed by the receiving decision date, arrange the people's temporary stay and the goods' receiving plan before departure.
09 /
Arrange cartons, ordinary refuse and bulky items separately
The City's 2026 recycling and trash guide separates regular refuse, two recycling zones and scheduled special collection. Identify the actual address's collector and schedule through the owner and the current City map. A calendar for a nearby street does not settle a building with private collection. Set material out after 5 p.m. the night before the applicable collection.
Use the correct collection stream after unpacking
Material
City guide instruction
Household preparation
Clean moving cartons
Flatten large cardboard and tie it in bundles no larger than 4 × 4 × 1 feet; small flattened pieces may go loose in recycling
Remove plastic inserts and foam, and keep the cardboard dry until set-out
Ordinary refuse
Up to three bags or cans per residential unit per collection; cans no larger than 32 gallons and each bag or can no heavier than 50 pounds
Use tied bags of at least 13 gallons and spread a large unpacking waste load across the correct arrangements
Bulky items and special loads
A special appointment covers a combined maximum of six cans, bags or bulk items per unit per special collection
Book the applicable collection before putting items outside
Mattress or box spring
Fully wrap each in plastic for the applicable special collection
Prepare both pieces rather than leaving an unwrapped box spring beside a wrapped mattress
Metal or an appliance
Use the separate appointment process; appliances with refrigerant have their own handling requirement
Confirm the accepted item and appointment before removal from the home
Wet, greasy or food-contaminated cardboard goes into refuse, not clean-paper recycling. Plastic film and foam inserts are not corrugated cardboard. Keep the usable public walk and receiving route clear while material waits for its correct set-out time.
If the bulk reservation form cannot find the address, ask the landlord or Public Works whether the building uses private collection or whether its record needs attention. That failure does not mean permission to leave the item at the curb. For a missed recycling pickup, follow the guide's reporting instruction by noon the next day. A mover's commercial disposal and a resident's municipal collection are separate arrangements.

Build ordinary outings into the home comparison
Use a few concrete public places to test the household's week. New Brunswick Free Public Library, at 60 Livingston Avenue, offers free cards to people who live, work, own property or study in the City, with the stated identification requirements. The basic application calls for two valid IDs, one showing the current address; nonresident workers and students have additional qualifying evidence. A campus mailing label is not the whole eligibility decision: the library directs Busch and Livingston students toward Piscataway's library-card route.
The City's parks directory gives several different ordinary destinations. Buccleuch Park at 321 Easton Avenue has fields, play space and paths. Joyce Kilmer Park at 143 Joyce Kilmer Avenue has neighborhood recreation including a playground and spray pad. Recreation Park at 7 Pine Street, with access from Sandford Street, combines fields and other recreation facilities. Murphy Park at 131 Tunison Road is a useful Rutgers Village-side reference with a school-side path, fields and play space.
For a small downtown outing, Liberty Park at Liberty, Bayard and Neilson Streets opened in September 2025; the current directory describes paths, dog areas and a small playground. It will not appear as an existing park on the older 2022 parks map. Select the entrance and activity from the current listing, then try the journey from the prospective home. A recreational field in view does not establish public access at every time or a booked event.
Pair these outings with the less picturesque tasks: shopping with bags, laundry, a pharmacy or appointment, and the final return home. Establish the particular shop or provider and current hours before making it part of the routine. Keep the address comparison useful to the household rather than relying on a generic list of attractions.
Include a repeatable park visit in the address comparison, using the actual entrance and permitted activity. Representative illustration, not a specific park condition record.
11 /
Keep resident parking, station parking and unloading distinct
New Brunswick Parking Authority's residential permit system uses digital vehicle plates, address evidence and the applicable zone. Check the property's eligibility and the vehicle to be registered. Visitor rules and temporary arrangements have their own conditions; a visitor's permitted area is not simply any street in the City.
A residential permit does not reserve a bay, override a traffic restriction or authorize a moving truck to unload. A paid station parking arrangement is another separate use. If the household needs a car, get the precise building space, street permit or other parking agreement in writing and include its cost. If the move needs curb access, establish the legal stopping position and any applicable arrangement separately with the responsible authority and the moving plan.
Walk from that actual stopping position to the accepting room. Include the public sidewalk, private entrance, shared corridor, lift or stair and any narrow turn. Ask who opens a service entrance, which working window is permitted and whether building documents or a reservation are required. A place visible from the apartment window can still be the wrong receiving point.
12 /
Assign the entire winter approach before an arrival date
New Brunswick's Municipal Code chapter 12.16 requires the owner, occupant or tenant to clear snow and ice from the abutting sidewalk within 12 daylight hours after the fall or formation. If ice is so frozen that removal is impracticable, the chapter provides for coverage with sand or ashes. This is not a 24-hour-after-the-storm rule.
Resolve who performs the work at the particular home, including a shared building. Then inspect the separate private path, steps, landing and door-swing area as part of the receiving arrangement. The public-sidewalk provision does not by itself assign every private surface to the same person. Snow pushed into a driveway opening or a narrowed route can change whether the planned move can safely proceed even when the main sidewalk has been cleared.
Before the agreed weather decision time, the person holding the keys should check the whole approach and send its current condition to the household and moving contact. If it cannot receive the move, use the agreed alternative receiving or storage arrangement and the people's separate accommodation plan. Resume only after access, the accepting person and any revised working window are confirmed. Check the collection route as well: the City guide asks residents to clear the curb or place material in front of snowbanks so it can be collected.
Assign and inspect the sidewalk, private path, steps and landing together before arrival. Representative illustration; snow-clearing responsibility depends on the actual property arrangements.
13 /
Give unfinished arrangements a decision time and a real alternative
Bring the address, household routines and arrival into one short record. Name who controls keys, who accepts the goods, which entrance and window are confirmed, and which utility and school contacts remain open. Keep documents, medication, chargers and the first night's essentials with the people who need them rather than inside a load that may arrive separately.
Resolve the receiving decision before the household is committed to arrival
Trigger
Decision owner and time
Alternative to confirm
Keys, lift or working window still unconfirmed
The household and building contact decide by the time agreed with the moving contact, before departure
An authorized receiver and usable window, or an agreed receiving/storage alternative with its costs and later delivery conditions
Essential utilities or a usable sleeping space are unavailable
The account holder and household decide before the planned first night
A confirmed temporary stay for the people, essentials kept with them and a separate decision about where goods may be accepted
Weather or an obstructed approach prevents safe access
The key holder reports the actual route before the agreed weather decision time
A confirmed clearing/access solution or the agreed alternate arrangement and revised working window
School or care start remains unresolved
The parent or guardian contacts the district or provider before relying on the first working day
A confirmed interim care/collection contact and the documents or decision still needed to start
A useful alternative has a named contact, a confirmed place or service, an agreed cost and a condition for resuming the original plan. “We will sort it out on arrival” leaves the goods and the people with different unresolved problems. Any moving, storage, packing or later delivery arrangement must be included in the actual agreed scope rather than assumed from this guide.
Use the New Brunswick moving page to connect the chosen home and access conditions with the service discussion. Keep the household's final record accessible to the people traveling and to the person receiving it.

Questions before you arrive
Does this guide also cover North Brunswick or East Brunswick?
No. It covers New Brunswick City in Middlesex County. North Brunswick, East Brunswick, Highland Park and Piscataway are separate municipalities. Establish the actual municipality from the full property address before using its school, collection or permit procedure; a New Brunswick mailing label alone does not settle that decision.
Where should I begin comparing homes in New Brunswick?
Begin with downtown/station streets, College Avenue/Easton, French Street/Joyce Kilmer, Livingston Avenue/Pine and the Cook–Douglass edge, and Rutgers Village/Townsend. They offer useful geographic contrasts in housing and daily connections, not official neighborhood boundaries or quality rankings. Compare actual homes with the same cost, usable-room and whole-week checklist.
What kinds of homes does New Brunswick have?
The 2020–2024 Census estimates include 3,609 detached units, 1,176 attached units, 4,628 units in two-to-four-unit buildings and 4,266 units in buildings containing at least 20 units. These are units rather than buildings and describe a survey period with sampling uncertainty. For a current choice, inspect the actual rooms, shared access, storage rights and written terms.
Is every advertised rent limited to a 3.3% increase in 2026?
No. The City lists 3.3% as the 2026 allowable annual increase for regulated rents, but unit coverage, exemptions and approved vacancy decontrol can change how an offer is assessed. Ask the Rent Control Office for the unit classification, registered base and any applicable exemption or approved change before relying on the number. A submitted vacancy application is not approval.
Is a private rental near Rutgers automatically exempt from rent control?
No. Proximity to a campus or student occupancy does not by itself establish an exemption. The City lists specific categories, including institution-owned and operated dormitories, and other coverage exceptions. Verify the particular private unit with the Rent Control Office rather than treating “student housing” in an advertisement as its legal classification.
Can I plan a weekend New York trip from Jersey Avenue station?
For the temporary October 11–November 14, 2026 timetable, use downtown New Brunswick as the starting comparison for a two-way daytime weekend trip. The current weekend table has no regular New York-bound Jersey Avenue outward service, although a few after-midnight trains arrive there in the other direction. Recheck the timetable for the actual travel date after the temporary period.
Can I rely on downtown New Brunswick station for step-free eastbound travel?
The current operator notice says its eastbound elevator is out of service until further notice. If step-free travel is essential, arrange an operator-confirmed station and ground connection that meets the traveler’s needs before the trip or before basing a home decision on it. The station’s general accessible designation does not resolve that outage.
Can people who are not Rutgers students use its campus buses?
Regular New Brunswick campus buses are free and require no ID during normal operating hours. Check the actual weekday, weekend or break route and current tracking for the needed connection. Knight Mover is a separate service requiring Rutgers affiliation and ID; it is requested when ready and cannot be reserved in advance.
Can a household manage without a car here?
A downtown or College Avenue-side address is a useful starting comparison for walking, rail and campus-bus connections. Test the actual work, food-shopping, school or care, evening and weekend trips, including bags and the final route into the home. Where a trip fails, confirm the delivery, care or prearranged ride and its cost before making the weekly plan depend on it.
Will the nearest public school be my child’s assigned school?
The district says enrollment follows the school zone for the address. Begin registration with New Brunswick Public Schools and confirm the assignment for the child’s actual grade. A nearby building or property advertisement is not confirmation. An out-of-zone request requires the district’s approvals, and transportation is not provided for that approved placement.
What if I cannot provide the usual two address proofs for school registration?
Contact district registration and ask about residency verification rather than waiting to begin. Its FAQ describes a verification process when normal address documents are unavailable and assistance obtaining school records. If online registration is not workable, request a phone appointment through registrationappointments@nbpsnj.net or 732-745-5300, extension 3205.
Is October 15 the preschool application deadline?
The current 2026–27 overview uses October 15 as the date by which the child must be three, along with City residency. It does not state that this is the application deadline. Ask Early Childhood at extension 4060 or ec_registrations@nbpsnj.net about the child’s placement process and current documents.
Who supplies electricity, gas and water?
PSE&G lists New Brunswick City in both its electric and gas service territories. Establish whether the home needs occupant-held accounts, then arrange the exact address and start date. City water and sewer billing has a separate account and Finance contact; ask the owner or closing contact who pays and which property-account steps apply. Internet also needs its own unit-specific service confirmation.
Can I assume the City energy-aggregation program gives me a current discount?
No. The latest visible City update is dated August 31, 2023 and reports that no new supplier award was made. It does not establish an active 2026 discount or automatic enrollment. Compare the current supply charge and terms on the actual utility account before budgeting a saving.
How do I dispose of moving cartons?
Keep clean cardboard dry, remove plastic and foam, and flatten it. The City guide calls for large cardboard in tied bundles no bigger than 4 × 4 × 1 feet; small flattened pieces can go loose with recycling. Wet, greasy or food-contaminated cardboard goes in refuse. Use the actual collector and recycling zone, with set-out after 5 p.m. the night before collection.
Can I leave a mattress at the curb after moving?
Arrange the applicable special collection first, then fully wrap both the mattress and any box spring in plastic. The City’s special collection has a combined six-item/bag/can maximum per unit per appointment. If the reservation form cannot find the address, ask the landlord or Public Works whether private collection or an address-record issue applies before setting the item outside.
Does a residential parking permit reserve an unloading space?
No. The digital residential permit applies to an eligible vehicle, address and zone under the Parking Authority’s rules. It does not reserve a bay or override other restrictions. Establish a legal truck stopping position and the complete receiving route separately from the household’s resident or station parking.
How soon must the sidewalk be cleared after snow or ice?
City code requires the owner, occupant or tenant to clear the abutting sidewalk within 12 daylight hours after the fall or formation. For ice impracticably frozen in place, the chapter provides for sand or ashes. Assign the actual worker at the home and inspect the private path, landing and door area separately before relying on the receiving approach.
Where can I start exploring ordinary public places?
Try the library at 60 Livingston Avenue, Buccleuch Park on Easton Avenue, Joyce Kilmer Park, Recreation Park on the Pine/Sandford side or Murphy Park on Tunison Road, according to the home being compared. The current City directory also lists Liberty Park downtown, opened in September 2025. Use the actual entrance and current activity conditions, then test the journey from the prospective front door.
What should be settled if the home cannot receive the move on the planned day?
Before the agreed decision time, confirm the person who controls keys, the accepting window and whether the route and essential services work. If they do not, confirm an authorized receiving or storage alternative for goods, the people’s separate temporary stay, costs and the conditions for later delivery. Keep first-night essentials with the people who need them; no alternate service is booked merely by reading this guide.
