New York / City relocation guide

Moving to Newburgh, NY

Choose a Newburgh home by its usable rooms, entrance and everyday journeys. This guide covers the City on the Hudson’s west bank, separate from the Town and wider postal name. Explore six areas, then arrange schools, services and receiving access.

Start with the decisions that change your shortlist

If you are choosing a home, begin with the place comparisons and housing budget. Locate its entrance and your regular destinations. Visit with the people who will make those journeys, including anyone who does not drive; compare the rooms and travel pattern together.

With children, establish the school district, registration path and transport before booking the truck. Municipal boundaries, district boundaries and school placements answer different questions; a nearby school is not automatically the assigned one.

If the address is chosen, work through services, waste, parking and access. Get the key-release time, the person who opens shared entrances and the route for your largest furniture. The loading point, receiving access and any shared lift must work together.

02 /

Establish the City address and your daily geography

The City and Town of Newburgh are separate municipalities. A postal name or ZIP code does not establish which government supplies a service. Use the full street address, unit and parcel to establish the municipality, then check the provider or district separately.

Broadway provides an east–west reference through the City; Liberty and Grand help orient the eastern street network. The Hudson is the eastern geographic reference, while Beacon’s Metro-North station is across the river. Locate an actual station or bus-stop entrance rather than measuring a straight line to a label. The last part of the journey can decide whether a connection is useful.

The map combines the complete January 2026 Census City outline, streets and water with approximate comparison anchors. The six comparisons overlap; these are not neighborhood, school, flood or truck-route boundaries.

Walk from the front door, including changes of level, crossings and the return with bags. Repeat the important part at the time you expect to use it. A daytime visit and a late return answer different questions.

Compare six places and their daily routines

Six numbered comparisons help you choose a home by its daily routine. They overlap and are not six official, mutually exclusive neighborhood boundaries. Compare the actual home, whole budget and journeys; confirm jurisdiction, school placement and services separately.

1 · East End historic streets

Begin around Grand, Montgomery and Liberty streets for the documented older architectural setting. Historic character and a waterfront comparison can overlap.

City East End design guidelines: historical and architectural context
Housing & setting
Compare usable floors, storage and shared entrances in the actual older house or apartment.
Daily travel
Test the walk to Broadway or Liberty Street, groceries and the return from Beacon. Include steps and changes of level that matter with bags.
Before choosing
The tradeoff is architectural character alongside the actual property's upkeep and access. Establish designated status before planning exterior changes, and inspect the whole furniture route rather than assuming a grand doorway settles it.

2 · Downtown waterfront

Use the river edge and the Broadway–Colden Street connection as orientation points. The City's Broadway Park account explicitly describes a stair connection between Broadway and the waterfront.

City Broadway Park account and waterfront stair connection
Housing & setting
Compare usable rooms, building charges, storage and delivery access in the actual offer. A river view does not settle those details.
Daily travel
Walk uphill to daily destinations and back. Check the current bridge-shuttle or replacement-bus trip; a nearby dock does not establish a ferry or late return.
Before choosing
The tradeoff is river access against the particular uphill, stair or longer walking connection your routine needs. Test an alternative to the stairs if a stroller, mobility aid or shopping cart is part of that routine.

3 · Broadway corridor

The City's form-based code identifies Broadway between West and Grand streets as a commercial corridor. Use that defined spine to compare an actual home and its everyday connections.

City Code §300-127: Broadway Corridor and downtown districts
Housing & setting
In a mixed-use building, inspect the offered unit's entrance, floors, shared circulation and included services.
Daily travel
Broadway and Liberty is a NAT transfer point; the bridge shuttle serves selected downtown stops. Check the actual trip, waiting location and return time.
Before choosing
The tradeoff is access to a commercial and transport spine against the exact frontage, building access and street restrictions. Visit at the times you will use it and resolve the loading side and duration before dispatch.

4 · Colonial Terraces / Clinton Square

The City identifies Clinton Square, at Fullerton Avenue and Third Street, as the entrance to Colonial Terraces. It gives this comparison a concrete place to begin.

City Clinton Square location and Colonial Terraces entrance
Housing & setting
Inspect usable floors and outside duties in the actual offer. Check applicable design-district conditions before budgeting exterior work.
Daily travel
Try the actual entrance-to-stop journey, groceries, school or childcare and the return with bags. Test the separate connection for a regional train journey.
Before choosing
The tradeoff is whether this residential location fits the household's journeys and maintenance capacity. Compare its real travel pattern with a Broadway or waterfront address rather than assuming the same routine from a City-wide map.

5 · Downing Park vicinity

Use Downing Park around Carpenter Avenue and Third Street as the anchor. The City describes a central landscape of hills, paths and a pond; this label describes a vicinity, not a new neighborhood boundary.

City Downing Park landscape and location
Housing & setting
Compare the offered home's usable rooms, storage, entrance and upkeep. Check school assignment separately from park proximity.
Daily travel
Try a park visit and grocery journey from the same door, including crossings. Check the useful stop and the evening or weekend return.
Before choosing
The tradeoff is a park-oriented routine against the particular home's other connections. Choose the entrance and path your household can use; a park label does not certify a flat or step-free route.

6 · The Heights / southern streets

The City Film Office identifies The Heights in the south end, with historic houses and downriver views. This is a southern comparison, not a promise that every home has a view.

City Film Office description of The Heights and historic streets
Housing & setting
Inspect every usable floor and approach, and compare outside duties with the work your household can take on.
Daily travel
Test the northward journey toward Broadway or your useful stop, groceries and the return. Include the final homeward approach after a regional trip.
Before choosing
The tradeoff is how the southern location and individual home fit your routine against the extra connection some destinations may require. Check the address's services, district and authorized furniture route independently of its neighborhood description.

Compare the home and the complete housing budget

Newburgh’s older housing can offer very different living arrangements behind a similar exterior. Compare the actual apartment, attached home or detached house on your shortlist. Establish which floors belong to the unit, where everyday storage is, how you reach the laundry or refuse area, and which entrance is authorized for furniture. An attractive front room does not explain a shared hall, a rear stair or the terms of a converted building.

The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 figures for Newburgh city provide historical context: median gross rent $1,454, median owner-occupied value $247,900, and median monthly owner costs of $2,147 with a mortgage or $1,098 without one. These are period aggregates for different groups of homes. They are not October 2026 asking prices, a mortgage quote, neighborhood medians or proof that a suitable unit is available. Gross rent also differs from an advertised base rent.

Compare the home, commitment and usable space
Compare Ask for the actual commitment Inspect at the property
Apartment Base rent, included utilities, other recurring charges, deposits and lease conditions Unit entrance, usable rooms, storage, shared spaces and permitted delivery route
Attached or older house Rent or ownership costs, utilities, insurance, upkeep and any association obligations Every usable floor, stairs, door turns, heating arrangements and responsibility for outside areas
Detached house Housing payment plus taxes, insurance, utilities, grounds and maintenance Private approach, storage, basement access, outdoor duties and furniture route

For a rental, request the lease, the exact unit identity and the owner or manager’s repair contact. City Chapter 240 covers its defined non-owner-occupied rental properties. Where it applies, the license identifies the property, units and permitted occupancy. Its certificate provisions distinguish posting in properties with more than four units from providing tenants a copy with the lease in properties of four or fewer units. Confirm applicability for the building rather than assuming that a listing photograph establishes lawful occupancy.

Do not assume every City rental has ETPA rent stabilization. HCR’s Newburgh update, dated April 22, 2024 and still displayed when checked, reports the court ruling that voided the City’s adoption and withdrew the associated prior guidance. Establish the particular apartment’s current status and lease terms through the relevant official resources before relying on a rent-protection claim.

Add the cost of the routine to the home’s payment. Include ordinary travel, occasional late returns, grocery delivery if you will use it, and maintenance or shared-building charges that apply to the actual offer. Keep moving, setup and one-off purchases in a separate column so a low recurring payment does not hide a difficult arrival budget.

Can you live here without a car?

Yes, a carefully chosen address and routine can work without a car. Test groceries, appointments, social plans, evenings, weekends and trips beyond Newburgh. A workable commute alone does not establish a workable household routine, particularly for someone who cannot drive a backup vehicle.

Newburgh Area Transit and the Beacon bridge connection serve different purposes. The NAT operator publishes daytime service Monday–Friday, 6:50 a.m.–7 p.m., and Saturday, 7:50 a.m.–7 p.m., with specified holiday exclusions. It does not publish Sunday local service on that page. The posted ordinary fare is $1.50, with a $0.50 transfer at Broadway and Liberty. Check the route and both directions for your actual trip; operating hours are not a promise of a bus at every stop throughout that span.

The Newburgh Beacon Bridge Shuttle connects downtown and the Route 17K Park & Ride with Beacon station; selected trips serve Stewart Airport. Its current operator page and July 4, 2026 schedule include weekend and holiday service. Check whether your chosen trip stops downtown or runs express, and whether an airport stop is included. The schedule describes complimentary 2026 fares; that does not promise free travel in a later year.

Keep the bridge shuttle separate from the Newburgh–Beacon ferry. NY Waterway’s route notice and linked advisory, read for this guide, say ferry service is suspended because of damage at the Beacon landing and that replacement buses are operating. A waterfront dock or an older ferry timetable does not establish a running boat. Use the operator’s current notice to confirm the replacement stop and trip before relying on it.

Try a grocery outing with your usual bags. Save A Lot at 97 Lake Street provides a City destination to check; confirm current store details before travelling. Adams Fairacre Farms at 1240 NY-300 is an outward shopping trip to test separately. Match shop hours with the return transport.

For an evening out, work backward from the time you expect to leave. Check the last usable local connection, any transfer and the final walk. For Sunday errands, the daily bridge shuttle does not supply all of NAT’s local shopping links. If the trip needs a taxi, rideshare, delivery or help from someone you know, check the actual pickup arrangement and budget; none is guaranteed simply because a service category exists.

Without a license, choose a fallback you can take. Before signing, try an appointment, grocery return, Sunday activity and regional round trip. If essential journeys depend on unconfirmed rides, revise the address, routine or budget while those choices remain open.

Register children and confirm their actual school journey

NECSD registers established residents within its own district boundaries. Use the correct school-year online application, save its number and provide a reachable phone and email. Building placement depends on enrollment availability; Pre-K uses zones. UPK requires age four by December 1 of the current year, and kindergarten age five by that date.

Prepare age evidence, current primary and supplementary residency documents, parent or guardian ID, custody documents where applicable, health and physical-exam records, and available prior records or IEP. The district considers residency evidence current within three months; renters need a lease and current rent receipt. Shared housing has a district affidavit process. Contact Registration if documents or technology are a difficulty instead of assuming that an incomplete application will resolve itself.

The department’s current notice places the Welcome Center at 20 Chestnut Street, with registration support by appointment. Contact 845-563-5437 or registration@necsd.net. Follow that department notice when arranging a visit; the district’s general website header still shows a different administrative address.

For transport, the published guidance agrees that City kindergarten–grade 8 pupils are eligible, but its high-school thresholds conflict: one passage says more than 1 mile up to 15 miles, while the FAQ says more than 0.5 mile up to 18 miles. Obtain an address-and-grade decision from Transportation at 845-568-6833, rather than choosing the more convenient passage. Permanent home-address changes go through Registration.

The linked 2026–2027 alternate-stop form gives an April 1, 2026 deadline for September arrangements, accepts ongoing requests, and warns that later requests are not guaranteed for the start and may take up to two weeks after school begins. Requests are for five days a week and do not carry over automatically. Submit the current form for a childcare stop and confirm when the accepted arrangement actually starts.

Keep the assigned building, first attendance date and confirmed bus arrangement together. Arrange a district-permitted responsible person where required for a young child’s return. Plan the first days around received confirmations.

Build an ordinary week around real destinations

The Newburgh Free Library’s main location is 124 Grand Street. Its posted regular hours include Monday–Thursday evenings to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1–5 p.m. The Town Branch has a separate location and timetable. Use the main library’s current calendar for the actual event and any registration, then check the journey home. A useful evening destination can still outlast a particular bus connection.

Downing Park, around Carpenter Avenue and Third Street, offers the City’s documented landscape of paths, hills and a pond. The Conservancy publishes dawn-to-dusk visiting information. Try the entrance and route that fit your home rather than treating the park’s name as a promise of one flat, step-free outing. Paths, weather and the needs of your household matter more than the straight-line distance to the park label.

Broadway Park at Broadway and Colden Street provides another orientation point between Broadway and the waterfront. The City describes its stair connection; inspect the route before choosing it for a stroller, a mobility aid or a loaded shopping cart. A river view and a convenient everyday route need not be the same feature.

For organized activities, the City Recreation Department directs residents to its current RecDesk calendar and registration. Check the actual age group, eligibility, fee, location and schedule before promising a child a particular activity. A general description of year-round programs is not a confirmed place in a session.

Useful resources: Main Library and calendar; Downing Park visiting information; City recreation registration.

Start household services for the exact unit

Establish included services, heating fuel, the unit's meter and the accounts you or the owner manage. Confirm start dates before relying on power, hot water or internet. Coordinate the old property's shutoff separately to avoid a gap.

Central Hudson distinguishes Start Service from Transfer Service between two properties it serves. Transfer does not move an account from one person to another: the outgoing holder stops service and the incoming holder submits a separate start request. Its residential instructions ask for official ID, the exact address including apartment number, and an emergency contact. A property without an installed meter uses a different new-service process; gas is not installed at every address in a served municipality.

For City water, buyers should arrange the Water Department’s closing or final meter reading and inspection so the previous owner’s usage is accounted for. The department lists 845-565-3356 for meter-reading questions; other billing issues go to the City Collector. Renters should establish with the owner how water is supplied and charged rather than assuming they open the same kind of account as an electricity customer.

For internet, confirm exact-unit availability, installation date and any landlord permission for access or wiring. If home working is essential, arrange a tested short-term option before relying on an unconfirmed installation.

Record the provider, account holder, exact unit, confirmed date, appointment window and access contact. Check activation on arrival. If an essential service is unavailable, use the agreed household fallback and contact the person who can authorize a delivery change.

Useful resources: Central Hudson service requests; City water FAQ.

09 /

Separate garbage, recycling and unwanted furniture

Ask the property which collection applies and where its containers are kept. The City’s ordinary garbage schedule has North Side collection Monday and Thursday, South Side Tuesday and Friday, and daily Monday–Friday Broadway collection between West and Grand Streets. Boundary-fronting properties follow the North Side garbage schedule. Put containers out only after 6 p.m. the preceding day and check holiday notices for the actual week.

Garbage belongs in bags inside labeled covered containers; the City gives a maximum of 96 gallons and 100 pounds per container. Return containers and uncollected material to the required rear or covered storage area by 6 p.m. on collection day. Construction and demolition debris is the owner’s separate disposal responsibility. Confirm the building’s container allowance and storage arrangement before leaving a move’s worth of material beside shared bins.

Recycling uses four sections, not the two garbage sides: A Monday, B Tuesday, C Thursday and D Friday, with setout after 6 p.m. the previous day. The City follows Orange County’s single-stream instructions. Establish the exact section and current accepted-material preparation; flatten clean moving cartons as instructed and keep unsuitable packing materials out. For a recycling-boundary address, Sanitation lists 845-565-1082 for clarification.

Ordinary bulk collection is a separate booking. The City describes Wednesday pickup, subject to holidays, a Tuesday 3 p.m. cutoff, and prepayment. Call 845-565-1082 or 845-565-3297 with the items, unit and pickup address. Mattresses and box springs are in its small-item category; confirm preparation, acceptance and total charge before setting them out.

The separate no-cost 2026 program has specific dates, including December 16, rather than free pickup every Wednesday. It requires booking by 3 p.m. the preceding Friday, allows up to five items per household, and requires the unit for an individual household in a multi-unit building. Earlier 2026 dates have passed. Confirm the published item limits and setout instructions for that program; a general moving booking does not reserve a municipal collection.

Decide what travels before the inventory is priced. Separate reusable goods and different waste streams. For an item not accepted for removal, agree where it remains and who handles it; public curb and truck space are not unbooked storage.

Useful resources: Garbage schedule; Garbage rules; Recycling sections; Recycling rules; Ordinary bulk collection; 2026 no-cost bulk dates.

10 /

Arrange a lawful loading point before dispatch

A paid parking session is not a reservation for a moving truck. Give City Parking Enforcement the exact block, side, date, arrival window and vehicle dimensions at 845-569-7525. Explain the expected loading duration and ask what authorization or temporary restriction the proposed stop needs, who obtains it, and what other location is acceptable if it cannot be used. A general moving-bay reservation process or standard fee has not been established here.

The code’s metered merchandise-loading provision gives commercial vehicles no more than 30 minutes. Its wording does not by itself establish that your household-goods job qualifies. Confirm that point with the authority, and arrange an approved alternative if the work needs longer. Active loading, parking a commercial vehicle and keeping a loaded truck overnight are different uses of the street.

Check the approach with the driver as well as the stop. City truck-route rules for vehicles over five tons gross weight include a direct local-delivery connection to the nearest truck route. That does not turn every mapped street into a through route. The separate Carter Street prohibition between Dubois Street and City Terrace must also be considered; do not assume an ordinary delivery exception overrides it.

Street-cleaning sections and exceptions affect the usable side and time. The City’s short north/south summary does not settle every boundary block, and its Broadway overnight summary differs from the code’s detailed side-and-day schedule. Supply the precise stop and time for confirmation. Photograph the current signs and check them again before unloading; avoid building a plan around whichever wording appears more permissive.

If the stop is unavailable, contact the coordinator. Agree a lawful replacement, its carry route, additional work or cost and the person who may approve it. A neighbor’s space-saving promise does not settle street permission.

Useful resources: Parking Enforcement; Standing and parking code; Truck-route code.

11 /

Check the whole route into the home

Walk from the loading point to the final room, including outside steps, doors, vestibule turns, corridors, landings and lift transfers. Compare actual furniture dimensions with each bottleneck, including the turn beyond a doorway.

Ask the owner or manager which route is authorized, when it is available and who releases each resource. In a shared building, confirm the delivery appointment, lift booking, protection requirements and the person who can admit the crew. Establish whether the outside entrance and the unit entrance use different keys. Send the useful photographs and measurements to the estimator before the job’s scope is accepted.

For a designated historic property, do not plan to remove protected exterior trim or railings simply because furniture will not pass. The current City historic-work process applies to relevant alterations; it is not a general permit for carrying furniture. Have the owner resolve the property’s status and any needed approval before promising an altered opening. An ordinary moving crew cannot authorize changes to protected fabric.

For a bottleneck, confirm another authorized entrance, an assessed item method or a different furniture choice. Establish who performs the accepted work and how it changes the written scope before moving day.

Agree where large pieces will go and keep essentials accessible. The room plan must fit the furniture while preserving shared exits and the circulation people need during delivery.

Useful resources: Historic-work code.

12 /

Prepare for winter and changing conditions

The City Charter places sidewalk maintenance and keeping the adjoining sidewalk and gutter clear of snow, ice and other obstructions on the abutting owner or occupant. Establish the practical responsibility with your landlord or household before a winter arrival. Include the porch or stoop, every tread, the private path and the public-sidewalk connection; clearing only the last section leaves a broken route.

A snow emergency changes street parking separately from ordinary cleaning. The City’s guidance prohibits parking on designated emergency routes and uses a 6 p.m. alternate-side changeover elsewhere; it also describes automatic activation on affected route portions at 2½ inches of accumulated snow and ice. Check the current City announcement or English/Spanish hotline, 845-569-7398, for your date. A municipal car-parking option is not confirmed truck-holding capacity.

Before dispatch, have someone check the actual entrance and agreed stop. Look for an untreated landing, a snowbank blocking the curb connection, standing water, a closed door or a change to the allowed side. Tell the coordinator what has changed while another arrival time or route is still practical. A map or a photograph from a previous visit does not establish present passability.

Useful resources: Sidewalk responsibilities; Snow-emergency guidance.

Make the arrival plan usable when something changes

Record key release, service start dates, loading point, building appointment and receiving contact. Keep documents, personal supplies, chargers, clothes and children's or pets' first-night essentials with the household, accessible if delivery waits.

Conditions for a workable arrival fallback
If this happens Confirm before changing the plan Resume when
Keys are delayed A decision deadline, the owner’s revised release time, the household’s destination and an accepted arrangement for the load The receiving person, keys and authorized entrance are ready
Loading space cannot be used A lawful replacement, its carry route, timing, additional work and authorized cost decision Driver and coordinator confirm the stop and complete route
Weather or essential service prevents arrival Actual conditions, the suitable household fallback and any accepted holding or later delivery capacity The agreed receiving conditions and appointment are restored

An accepted fallback names the provider or property, capacity, window, access, price and authorized decision-maker. An inquiry or general storage page is not confirmed capacity. If an arrangement cannot accept the goods, settle another workable option before committing the truck.

Confirm where people will sleep or work and how they reach it. Separately confirm the belongings' destination and delivery restart. Record the accepted scope and cost of any extra vehicle, carry, waiting, storage or later appointment.

Update personal records through their own owners. New York DMV requires existing license, permit, non-driver-ID and vehicle records to be updated within 10 days of a move; USPS forwarding does not update DMV. At this check, the DMV address page reports its online change service unavailable and gives mail or office alternatives. Follow the current page for the method that is working when you act.

Use the Newburgh moving page to prepare the addresses, inventory, access photographs, dates and unresolved questions for your estimate.

Questions before you arrive

Does a Newburgh mailing address mean the home is in the City?

No. Check the complete address and parcel to distinguish City from Town. Then confirm district and utility coverage separately before applying the relevant procedures.

Can I live in Newburgh without owning a car?

Yes, if the address and transport support your whole week, including groceries, evenings, Sundays and regional returns. Confirm the cost and availability of backup rides or delivery; a non-driver needs a fallback they can use.

Is Metro-North in Newburgh itself?

The rail connection is Beacon station across the Hudson. Include the cross-river connection, station approach and return trip; proximity to the river does not establish a usable train journey.

Can I rely on the Newburgh–Beacon ferry for my commute?

NY Waterway's notices report suspension and replacement buses after Beacon landing damage. Confirm the current trip and stop. The separate bridge shuttle has its own timetable, including weekend service.

Is $1,454 the rent I should expect to pay now?

No. It is the City's Census median gross rent for 2020–2024. Compare the actual current lease, included utilities and other charges, plus travel and one-off costs.

Are all Newburgh rentals rent stabilized?

No. HCR's displayed Newburgh update records the City's ETPA adoption being voided and prior guidance withdrawn. Establish the particular apartment's current status and lease terms before relying on a stabilization claim.

What should I request before renting an older apartment?

Request the unit identity, lease, included services and repair contact. Where Chapter 240 applies, check the rental license and permitted occupancy. Inspect the actual rooms and authorized entrance.

Will my child attend the closest school?

Not necessarily. NECSD says building placement depends on current enrollment availability, while Pre-K uses zones. Confirm district eligibility and the assigned building through Registration rather than reading an assignment from the postal name or nearest school.

Which documents should I gather for school registration?

Gather age proof, primary and supplementary current residency evidence, parent or guardian ID, applicable custody papers, health and physical records, and available prior records or IEP. Renters need a lease and current rent receipt. Ask Registration about its shared-housing affidavit process if that is your situation.

What are the published Pre-K and kindergarten ages?

NECSD’s UPK requires age four by December 1 of the current year; kindergarten requires age five by that date. Use the correct school-year application and confirm placement through the district.

Will a City address give my child a school bus?

The published guidance agrees on eligibility for City kindergarten–grade 8 pupils. Its high-school distance thresholds conflict, so obtain a decision for the exact address, grade and assigned building from Transportation at 845-568-6833. Do not treat the nearest school or an unprocessed request as an assigned route.

Can the school bus use a childcare address?

Use the current alternate-stop form. The 2026–2027 form accepts ongoing requests after its April 1 deadline, warns that late arrangements are not guaranteed for the start, and requires five days a week. Confirm the approved stop and effective date; last year’s request does not carry over.

Where is the school Welcome Center now?

The department gives 20 Chestnut Street. Arrange support at 845-563-5437 or registration@necsd.net, and confirm the appointment before travelling; the general website header shows a different administrative address.

Can the previous tenant transfer the electricity account to me?

Central Hudson says its Transfer Service option is for one customer moving between two served properties. For a change of person, the outgoing holder stops service and the incoming holder makes a separate start request. Confirm the exact unit, meter and activation date.

What should a City homebuyer do about water?

Arrange the Water Department’s final or closing meter reading and inspection so the previous owner’s usage is accounted for. For meter-reading questions, call 845-565-3356. Renters should establish water responsibility and charging with the owner rather than assume an individual tenant account.

Are garbage and recycling collected on the same schedule?

They use different systems: garbage has North and South sides plus a Broadway provision, while recycling has sections A–D. Establish both for the exact address and check holiday notices. Put the relevant containers out after 6 p.m. the previous day, following the building’s arrangement.

Where do empty moving cartons go?

Follow current single-stream preparation for clean cardboard. Establish your recycling section, flatten cartons as instructed and keep unsuitable packing material separate. Confirm shared-building storage and collection before setout.

Can I put a mattress outside on an ordinary collection day?

Book and confirm bulk collection first. The ordinary City program describes Wednesday service, a Tuesday 3 p.m. cutoff and prepayment; mattresses and box springs are listed as small items. Confirm preparation and charge with Sanitation before setout. The moving order is a separate arrangement.

Is municipal bulk pickup always free?

No. The no-cost 2026 program has specified dates, including December 16, a preceding-Friday 3 p.m. booking deadline and a five-item household limit. Ordinary bulk collection has its own payment process. Use the program applicable to your actual date and items.

Does paying a meter reserve space for the moving truck?

No. Confirm the proposed stop and duration with Parking Enforcement at 845-569-7525. Ask what authorization is needed and who obtains it. The code’s 30-minute merchandise-loading provision does not establish household-goods eligibility or permission for a longer move.

Can the driver follow an ordinary car-navigation route?

Have the driver review the vehicle and actual approach. City truck-route rules and the separate Carter Street prohibition can matter, and a road shown on the orientation map is not permission to use it. Confirm the route and legal loading point before dispatch.

Who should clear the entrance for a winter move?

Set the practical responsibility with the owner, landlord or household in advance. City Charter duties cover the abutting sidewalk and gutter; your receiving plan also needs the stoop, steps and private path checked. Confirm present conditions and snow-emergency parking before the vehicle arrives.

Can we remove an old exterior railing if furniture will not fit?

Do not assume permission. Have the owner establish whether the property or feature is designated and whether the proposed alteration needs City historic-work approval. Assess another authorized route or an appropriate item method before moving day; the crew cannot approve a protected-feature change.

What is the useful fallback if the keys are late?

Set a decision deadline, revised key-release time, household destination and accepted load arrangement with capacity, timing, access, cost and authority. Resume when the receiver, keys, entrance and loading plan are ready.

Does mail forwarding update my DMV records?

No. New York DMV requires its relevant existing records to be updated within 10 days and says USPS forwarding does not do that. Use the current DMV instructions; its address page reported the online transaction unavailable at this check and offered mail or office alternatives.
