Moving to Shady Spring, West Virginia

Use these four checks to compare an actual property: county responsibility, water and sewer, schools and disposal. They do not divide Shady Spring into invented neighborhoods.

For a purchase, separate the advertised rooms from the systems and access you have actually inspected. Check drainage, heating, water and wastewater arrangements, the driveway and any outbuilding included in the transaction. Ask what equipment remains and what must be serviced or disconnected before moving; a community description cannot establish the condition of one home.

For a rental, confirm who opens utility accounts, who arranges waste service, what is included in the rent and how the key handover works. If the home will also be a workplace, check internet availability at the exact address and the room layout before relying on a general coverage map. A suitable-looking laundry room is still something to measure against the actual appliances and door route.

Try the outward and return trip to work, school, shopping and appointments at the times you expect to travel. Road distance, school traffic, a driveway exit and construction can affect a trip; the distance to a nearby anchor city is not a promised commute time.

The existence of a county service does not establish a usable stop at every Shady Spring home. Limited group contract transportation depends on vehicle and driver availability and is a separate inquiry.

Start with Raleigh County Schools at 304-256-4500, 105 Adair Street, Beckley. Give the physical address, the child’s grade and the intended first day; ask which school handles enrollment and whether school transportation is available from that address. A school bearing the Shady Spring name does not assign every postal address to it.

Shady Spring High School is one named district school, not a guarantee of placement. Ask the receiving school for its current document list and how records from the previous school should be transferred. Prepare identity, address, prior-school and relevant health/support information so you can respond to that confirmed list. Check kindergarten or pre-K timing directly rather than use an old registration announcement. Arrange first-day transport while any bus details are being settled.

Ask the current owner or landlord which providers actually serve the property, including water, wastewater, electricity, heating fuel and internet. A Shady Spring postal address alone does not confirm public connections; if the home uses a well or septic system, obtain the system information and inspection records.

For an existing Beckley Water connection, its establishing-service instructions request identification, the physical address, rental and landlord details where applicable, and a receipt showing the relevant sewer account has been established. Its online form lists Shady Spring PSD among the sewer choices and requires sewer payment before water is turned on. Water and sewer are separate arrangements.

Call Beckley Water at 304-255-5121 to confirm the provider, transfer process, lead time and deposit: its instructions and online form currently show different residential deposit figures. Do not treat the difference as an agreed charge or submit an account under the wrong sewer choice. Confirm activation before relying on water at key handover.

Ask the landlord or current resident which collection service serves the property, when a new account can start and how bulky items are handled. Do not assume the county landfill arranges curbside pickup or that a moving crew’s scope includes a cleanout.

The Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority landfill page lists Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday closure, with listed holiday closures. Fees depend on the vehicle and load; refrigerated appliances carry a separate Freon-removal charge. Confirm the item, fee and any delivery conditions before loading a vehicle.

The recycling center lists cardboard, office paper, newspaper, magazines, several metals, batteries and plastics #1/#2. It lists Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and closes on weekends and listed holidays. Check preparation and acceptance for your actual materials; landfill Saturday hours do not make the recycling center open on Saturday.

Choose a practical grocery and pharmacy trip from the real home, and arrange prescription transfers or appointments directly with the relevant provider before you need them. Check the opening times you will use rather than assume every nearby service keeps the same schedule.

The Shady Spring library at 440 Flat Top Road offers computers, free Wi-Fi and study seating, with paid printing, copying, notary and fax services. Its posted hours are Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays; call 304-763-2681 to confirm a particular visit or service. A public computer can help while home internet is being arranged, but does not promise a private workspace or uninterrupted business access.

Share the proposed vehicle position and the whole route to the door with your mover. Confirm property permission, usable ground, clearance and room to turn; keep essential access clear. For a roadside proposal, identify the actual road authority through county contacts or the relevant state office. Ask about that road, date and vehicle rather than infer permission from the absence of a published moving form.

Road-condition information and loading permission answer different questions. Avoid a last-minute route through an unverified shoulder, soft lawn or load-sensitive private area.

Measure the largest pieces against the actual doorway, screen door, hall turns and stairs, including where hands and protection need room. Photograph the complete route from the vehicle to the room. Complete any bulky-item or donation arrangements separately so rejected items do not become an unplanned moving-day load.

During the final days, keep essentials and documents with you, label rooms and check the route and weather again. On arrival, confirm the property is ready before unloading. Keep a fallback for late keys: whom to call, a workable receiving date and whether an agreed storage stage would be needed. Do not rely on an unconfirmed same-day utility activation or storage opening.
