Movers in Glen Allen, VA

Plan a Glen Allen move around the work at both properties. Sterling Oakbridge can coordinate packing, furniture preparation, carrying, transport and delivery with the access and receiving arrangements your household or business needs.

01 /

Start with the rooms, entrances and receiving address

For a Glen Allen move, a useful inventory says more than “three bedrooms.” Identify which furniture starts upstairs, which cartons will be ready at the entrance, and what needs packing or preparation. Then follow those belongings through the old property and into the rooms where they belong at the new address.

Glen Allen is a Census-designated place in Henrico County. Mailing addresses carrying the Glen Allen name can cover a wider area, so send both complete addresses. The place name alone cannot establish the road authority, a building's loading arrangements or whether a particular driveway can take the proposed vehicle.

The 2020–2024 ACS housing estimates put detached homes at about 66.5% of housing units in the Glen Allen CDP, with attached single-unit homes accounting for another 13.9%. Both kinds of property can require several levels of carrying. A townhouse with assigned parking, a detached home with a private drive and an apartment behind a controlled entrance need different access plans; no neighborhood average settles those details.

Send wide photographs that connect the spaces. For example, show an upstairs dresser, the stair turn and the downstairs exit rather than three close-ups of the dresser. At delivery, identify its intended room and the route to that room. The planning team can then review whether the proposed work needs more measurements, furniture preparation or another access arrangement.

Build the service around what you want handed over

Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.

Designer and hotel furniture receivingReceiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed planExpected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site

Choose the point at which you want our help to begin and end. You might finish ordinary cartons yourself and ask us to prepare furniture, or book selected-room packing before the main move. A shipment going into storage also needs a later receiving plan, even if the final delivery date is still being settled.

Keep four groups distinct: belongings for the new address, items going into storage, things you will take yourself, and items staying behind or needing separately quoted removal. Mark the groups before packing starts. A landlord's furniture or a buyer's retained appliance should not be loaded because it happened to be in the same room.

Tell us about any work you expect at the receiving end, including furniture placement, ordinary reassembly and optional box unpacking. Describe the intended result so the estimate can distinguish transport from additional preparation and settling-in work.

03 /

Show the turn as well as the staircase

A long item may fit through a front door and still fail at the landing above it. Include the whole route: room exit, corridor turns, both ends of every stair flight, the external steps and the walk to the vehicle. At the new property, repeat the review through to the final room rather than stopping at the building entrance.

Property situationWhat to show or arrange
Townhouse with an upper bedroomThe actual furniture, every flight, the turning landing, handrails and standing space at each end.
Detached home with more than one entranceEach plausible approach, driveway surface and slope, overhead clearance and the route inside the selected door.
Apartment or managed communityLoading location, controlled doors, all lifts or stairs, permitted hours and the manager's booking or documentation requirements.
Assigned or shared parkingWho may authorize the proposed space and how pedestrians and other residents retain access.

A townhouse example: if a dresser cannot negotiate the intermediate landing, stop before dispatch and ask the planning team to review its construction and the available route. The resident must obtain any property permission, and the team must confirm a practical alternative before it becomes the plan. A different entrance, specialist preparation or another date may change the work and cost. Do not remove a railing or assume a window route is included.

We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.

The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

A submitted lift request is still a request until the manager accepts it. Ask for the resource, date, hours, access contact and any required documents in writing. If it is refused or changes, notify the planning team while another arrangement can still be checked.

Check the road owner and the proposed standing space

A driveway or private loading space can be useful when its owner allows the vehicle and the approach is suitable. Show its entrance, surface, slope, overhead obstacles and exit, together with the walking route to the home. A resident's agreement does not authorize occupation of a public curb or highway right-of-way.

Henrico Public Works identifies the road responsibilities: VDOT maintains interstates, US highways and state primary routes; the county maintains other public roads. Establish which agency owns the actual road before asking about an unusual truck position, equipment or occupied road space. A Glen Allen mailing address is not a reason to copy a neighboring county's procedure.

Henrico’s community-maintenance guidance also limits parking of trucks and commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds gross weight, commercial trailers and wreckers in residential and agricultural districts, with a farm exception: they may park while loading, unloading or working at or near the premises. This is not a general overnight parking approval. The relevant vehicle, district and standing arrangement still need review.

Resolve the preferred position and a workable alternative before dispatch. If a shared space is unavailable, a longer lawful carry, a different authorized entrance or a revised day may be necessary. Have the property contact confirm the access and ask the planning team to review the labor, schedule and any additional charges. Household cones do not create a public reservation.

Choose what can be packed early and what stays in use

Start with contents you can do without before departure, while leaving a small set of everyday essentials for personal travel. Folded spare linen is a manageable early task; a working kitchen or a child's current bedding may need a later packing slot. Keep medicines, keys, identification and important documents with you.

Mark cartons for their receiving rooms and use a short contents description. If bedding goes into storage while the household stays elsewhere, make that distinction visible before the cartons are mixed together. A label should help the crew route the box without exposing private names or documents.

Labor, materials and optional work

Item or taskHow it is charged
Basic furniture disassembly and reassemblyPart of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee
Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tapeNo separate charge for these basic protection materials
Boxes supplied for your moveCharged separately
PackingCharged for working time; boxes are separate
Unwrapping furniturePart of delivery
Unpacking the contents of boxesOptional work, charged for working time
Packaging and waste removalCharged separately
Complex furniture and other specialist workIndividually quoted after review

Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.

Ask about partial packing when only selected items need help. Tell us whether your own cartons will be closed and ready, which contents remain loose and when the rooms are available for work. Last-minute packing affects the day differently from collecting a finished shipment.

Specialist services by individual quote

What needs attentionWork available for review
Complex furnitureBunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly
Heavy itemsPianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables
Art and collectionsFine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification
Hanging and installationPictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately
Business equipmentOffice furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route

Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

For furniture, describe the construction and any known detachable parts. Agree the preparation, fittings storage and intended reassembly before the item is taken apart. An ordinary furniture task and a specialist installation are different scopes; photographs help identify which review is needed.

Give a business move a clear operational handover

For an office or other business, identify who can release the old premises, open the new one and accept the final layout. Give the planning team the building rules, operating hours and inventory by phase. Furniture and equipment transport should be coordinated with the work required to reopen.

A phased-office example: staff may need a small working area until the agreed cutoff while the rest of the desks and closed equipment cartons move first. The business owner should approve that sequence and name the person handling technical disconnection and reconnection. Moving the devices does not by itself restore a network, software or service.

If receiving access or technical readiness slips, the authorized business contact and planning team need to decide before the first phase leaves whether to postpone it or use a confirmed holding arrangement. Record the access, resource availability, revised delivery stage and cost before proceeding. A possible storage contact is not a booked contingency.

IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.

We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

07 /

Ask for the charging basis and the complete agreed scope

Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

A move entirely within Virginia also needs the applicable state terms. The Virginia DMV household-goods guidance requires qualifying deliveries over 30 miles to use the rates in the carrier's filed tariff. Ask the written estimate to identify the charging basis for your actual route. A general local hourly example or an interstate flat-rate description does not settle every intrastate move.

Compare inventories and tasks as well as figures. Packing responsibility, furniture preparation, stairs, long carries, restricted loading, storage and receiving work all need to appear in the scope being compared. Have additions or changed access reviewed before the affected work begins.

Keep the estimate separate from the final documents and any selected protection option. The person preparing the estimate performs a different role from the moving crew; send changes to the planning team rather than assuming that a conversation on moving morning has already revised the written plan.

Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

Plan possession, pickup and delivery in a workable sequence

Direct and consolidated long-distance moving

Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.

The old and new properties do not need identical loading windows, but the sequence must work. Confirm when belongings can leave the old home, allow for travel and the agreed service, and establish when delivery may enter the new one. Include each managed entrance, lift and intermediate stage rather than checking just the first and last door.

A delayed-closing example: an expected closing time does not guarantee keys or permission to unload. Before the dispatch decision, the buyer should obtain the receiving-access confirmation from the authorized property contact. If possession is still uncertain, discuss postponement or a separately confirmed storage and later-delivery arrangement while those options remain available.

For a storage alternative, record what goes there, who has accepted it, the available dates, access conditions, handling and redelivery costs. Arrange people, pets and overnight essentials separately. Resume delivery when the receiving contact confirms lawful access and the planning team confirms the delivery resource and revised terms.

09 /

Choose dates around permissions and readiness

Give us several acceptable dates when you can. An elevator booking, lease handover, closing or permitted loading period may be more important than choosing a particular weekday. We do not have a measured Glen Allen booking pattern that would justify promising a cheaper date or an available crew.

If the loading window is short, ask whether packing can take place on a separate authorized day and what must be complete before the crew arrives. Confirm access to the rooms for that preparation; a future tenancy or anticipated closing is not permission to work there early.

Keep weather and traffic contingencies tied to the actual route and properties. Name the person who can authorize a changed day or entrance, agree a decision deadline with the planning team before dispatch and identify the accepted alternative. Check what a delay means for keys, accommodation, storage and charges rather than assuming one phone call preserves every booking.

10 /

Receive the rooms before opening every carton

Have the receiving contact ready to open the property and identify the final rooms for large furniture. Keep the route clear while the larger pieces are placed, then direct labelled cartons to practical wall-side groups. In a bedroom, leave access to the bed and door so the household can use the room before every box is unpacked.

Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.

A rental cleanout example: do not promise the old unit empty on the assumption that any moving truck can use the county dump. Henrico’s Public Use Areas are a resident primary-residence service with proof requirements; the county treats waste from rental properties and commercial ventures as commercial and prohibits it there. That distinction applies even when the material looks like ordinary household furniture.

Set aside belongings for removal from the shipment, identify their material and condition, and agree an authorized receiving route and separate price before collection. For an eligible resident, Henrico’s bulky-waste service through TurboHaul can be another option, but its stated collection period is within 14 calendar days rather than a promise of pickup on moving day. Check eligibility and timing before relying on it for a landlord's deadline.

If the planned removal cannot happen, the resident or other authorized property contact must agree where the items may remain or accept another confirmed route. Do not leave them at a public curb or unattended property and treat the move as complete. Continue the agreed removal only after access, acceptance and cost are settled.

Send a request the planning team can assess

Include both addresses, preferred dates and alternatives, a room-by-room inventory, photographs of large or awkward items and wide views of the carrying routes. Tell us what you will pack, what you want us to prepare, and any storage, unpacking or separately quoted removal you need.

Let the scope determine the survey

A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.

Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.

The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.

For interstate household-goods moves covered by the federal survey requirement, the written-estimate rule requires a physical survey unless the individual shipper signs the required written waiver before loading. An informal photo exchange does not itself record that waiver. Confirm the applicable survey and written estimate with the planning team; this federal rule is separate from Virginia-only moving terms.

Add the property contact, confirmed loading or lift arrangements, possession status and any deadline that changes the sequence. If something is still pending, say who is deciding it and when you expect the answer. We can then review the uncertainty with you before it becomes a moving-day obstruction.

Keep the accepted scope, receiving plan and later changes in writing. The aim is a workable handover: the right belongings prepared, carried, transported and delivered to the rooms and stages you have agreed.

Questions before you move

Can you combine a Glen Allen move with selected-room packing?

Yes. Ask for the rooms or contents you want us to pack and identify what you will finish yourself. Include loading, transport and the receiving work you need in the same request. The estimate should distinguish working time, separately charged boxes, optional box unpacking and any removal.

Are blankets, shrink wrap and tape charged separately?

Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.

Does a Glen Allen mailing address establish the same access rules everywhere?

No. Send the complete address so the road, property and building arrangements can be checked. The Census CDP is a statistical boundary; the broader mailing name does not establish a loading space, an office location or a particular road authority.

What should I send for furniture on a townhouse upper floor?

Send the actual item, its dimensions and construction where known, and wide photographs of both ends of every stair flight and the turning landing. Include the route at delivery. Have a difficult fit reviewed before dispatch; do not remove rails or dismantle furniture speculatively.

What if my apartment has a lift and controlled entry?

Arrange the property’s required loading and lift access with the authorized manager, and obtain the accepted date, hours, entrance and contact in writing. Send all intermediate stairs, lifts and door restrictions to the planning team. A submitted reservation or a key to one entrance does not establish the whole route.

Can the moving vehicle wait overnight on a residential street?

Do not assume that it can. Henrico’s guidance restricts residential and agricultural parking for commercial vehicles and trucks over 10,000 pounds gross weight, commercial trailers and wreckers to loading, unloading or nearby work, with a farm exception. The actual vehicle, district and proposed position still need review; a loading allowance is not an overnight approval.

Does every household move need a Henrico right-of-way permit?

The sources reviewed do not establish a universal permit or curb-reservation procedure for every ordinary household move. Identify the road owner and describe any proposed occupation of road space, equipment or unusual standing arrangement to that authority. Obtain the applicable answer before relying on the position; private permission does not reserve a public curb.

Who maintains the public road outside the property?

Henrico Public Works says VDOT maintains interstates, US highways and state primary routes, while the county maintains other public roads. Check the particular road rather than deciding from the Glen Allen name. Private drives and managed loading areas require their own owner’s agreement.

Is the local estimate a maximum total?

No. Estimated hours help plan the crew and day; they do not cap the actual working time. Traffic, readiness, access and added work can change it. For a Virginia-only move, ask the written terms to identify the applicable tariff and charging basis; the DMV guidance includes filed-tariff requirements for qualifying deliveries over 30 miles.

When does a long-distance flat rate stay the same?

For a move quoted at a flat rate, it stays the same when the agreed shipment and service scope stay the same. Added belongings, extra packing or changed access and receiving requirements need review and can change the price. Confirm the terms for the actual route, including any state-specific requirements.

What if closing is delayed and the new home is not ready?

Tell the planning team before dispatch while a postponement or storage alternative can still be checked. The buyer or authorized receiving contact must confirm access; an expected closing time is insufficient. Use storage only after its availability, dates, access, handling and redelivery costs are accepted. Resume with confirmed possession and a confirmed delivery arrangement.

Can removal items from a rental property go to a county Public Use Area?

No. Henrico’s published eligibility rules classify waste from rental properties, vacant lots and commercial ventures as commercial and prohibit it at the resident Public Use Areas. Agree a permitted route and separate removal price for the actual material before collection. Resident identification does not make an otherwise prohibited load eligible.

Can I rely on county bulky collection to clear the home on moving day?

Only if an eligible arrangement has been accepted and its timing meets your deadline. Henrico’s TurboHaul service states collection within 14 calendar days, which does not guarantee your moving date. Check the item and pile qualifications, booking and charges. If the timing fails, arrange an authorized alternative rather than leaving items behind without permission.

Can you take furniture apart and put it back together?

Basic furniture preparation and reassembly can be included in the agreed move. Show the construction, size, detachable parts and intended receiving room in advance. Complex furniture, specialist installation or uncertain access needs individual review and quotation; do not assume wall work or a window route is part of an ordinary furniture task.

Do pickup and delivery access windows have to match?

No. They must form a feasible sequence: authorized pickup, the agreed travel or storage stage, then authorized delivery. Confirm every required lift, entrance and receiving contact, and let the planning team assess the sequence. If one resource changes, review the whole plan before dispatch.

What protection should I choose before the move?

Discuss the available liability and higher-cost protection choices and record the selected level, limits, cost and claims process in the moving documents. For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless Released Value is selected through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s liability, distinct from a separate insurance policy; flag high-value items early.

What does a useful first estimate request contain?

Both full addresses, dates and alternatives, room-by-room contents, packing responsibilities, photographs of awkward items and the complete access routes. Add confirmed property arrangements, possession status, storage or receiving stages and separate removal work. Identify any pending decision and its authorized contact so the planning team can review it with you.
