Choose what you want the packing crew to take over
A move can occupy the evenings long before the truck arrives. Opening cupboards, sorting belongings, buying cartons, protecting fragile pieces and writing labels can turn a couple of weeks after work into another project. You can do that work yourself, hand over all the agreed preparation, or keep the manageable groups and book help for the rest.
Full packing covers the retained household contents in the agreed scope. Partial packing names particular rooms or groups, such as a kitchen, books and a home office. Fragile-only packing concentrates on selected dishes, glass, framed pieces or collections. The useful boundary is a list of contents and responsibilities, rather than the phrase “help with packing.”
| Option | What we prepare | What to settle before the visit |
|---|---|---|
| Full household packing | The retained contents and furniture preparation included in the reviewed plan | What stays behind, what travels with you, storage groups and the time each room can be released |
| Selected rooms or inventory | The named cupboards, rooms or item groups | Who packs the remaining contents and when those cartons will be ready |
| Fragile-only preparation | The selected fragile pieces using methods suited to their shape and condition | Ordinary wrapping versus a specialist method or crate, and who handles the rest |
| Optional box unpacking | Opening agreed cartons and placing contents on suitable available surfaces | Priority rooms, usable surfaces and whether directed organizing or material removal is also wanted |
Furniture unwrapping is part of delivery. Opening household cartons is optional work. Portland moving services explains the carry, transport and placement; this page helps define the preparation and receiving work around it.
Review the contents, including what is out of sight
Open cupboards, closets, drawers and bookcases for the inventory review. Include the kitchen's small appliances, pantry contents intended to travel, linen, shoes, lamps, framed photographs and collections, plus belongings in an attic, basement or another storage area. Identify heavy books, unusually shaped pieces and anything with removable glass. A bedroom count cannot describe these differences.
A household might expect twenty cartons and discover enough retained contents for sixty or a hundred. That illustrates undercounting; it is not a forecast for a Portland apartment or a formula tied to floor area. Photos or a video review of open storage help choose carton types, cushioning, labor and whether packing needs a separate day.
Decide what to keep before those belongings receive paid preparation. Mark items staying at the property, already accepted for donation, sold or awaiting a separately agreed removal. Do not put keys, identity documents, medicines, valuables and personal arrival essentials into the main shipment. Keep the personal group with you and tell the crew how it is identified.
Small cartons keep books manageable; a suitable dish carton gives supported fragile contents room for individual wrapping and cushioning; a wardrobe carton supports selected hanging clothes. A customer tote needs a sound body, a usable lid and identification. Tell us what materials you already have so unsuitable or insufficient containers can be identified before the carrying appointment.

Arrange packing around the last night and actual access
Keep a final-night group usable until its agreed packing time. Choose bedding, towels, everyday clothes, a few kitchen items and what the household needs for work or school. Release nonessential cupboards first, then identify the small remaining group for the last pass. A booked full-packing service does not mean the customer must finish that packing beforehand.
A modest studio or one-bedroom shipment can sometimes be packed and moved in one local day when the contents, access and agreed work fit. A dense two-bedroom inventory or larger home may benefit from preparation on an earlier day. The inventory and usable work period decide; neither a room count nor extra workers guarantees completion within a short elevator slot.
Portland's Street & Sidewalk Occupancy guidance gives a five-to-ten-business-day application window and requires payment before issuance. Keep any required street arrangement separate from the building's approved entrance and carrying period. Materials delivery, packing inside the unit and loading can require different access appointments. The local guide's truck-parking procedure supplies the detailed municipal sequence.
Get the actual building instructions: keys, management contact, permitted hours, service entrance, each elevator and any insurance documents. Arrange preparation before the carrying slot where the property allows it. Keep shared exits usable and confirm where prepared groups may wait inside the home; a corridor is not an assumed staging area.
Four situations to plan before the cartons are closed
These are hypothetical examples, not accounts of completed customer jobs. Their value is in the different preparation and receiving decisions, rather than a promise about the number of cartons or hours.
Consider: a West End collection with a usable final evening
Imagine a household leaving a West End home with a book collection, ordinary dishware and several framed pieces. One person works from home through the afternoon before departure. The City describes a varied mix of building types and lot sizes in its West End historic-district resource; that does not establish the layout or access of this particular home.
Review the actual stairs, room route and surfaces. Release the books and display cupboard first, but leave the desk, a working chair and personal documents available until the agreed time. Use manageable book cartons and item-specific protection for glass and frames. Name anything needing fine-art assessment instead of folding it silently into ordinary dish packing.
The result is a defined prepared group while the household can still work and eat that evening. The last desk items and everyday kitchen pieces have a named final pass, and the first-night group travels with the household. A separate packing day can protect that sequence if the inventory will not fit the loading day.
Consider: a Portland Commons move with less furniture to prepare
Suppose a student is leaving a furnished room at Portland Commons for another home. The University's room-features page describes supplied bedroom furniture and different apartment arrangements. Begin with the actual assigned room and belongings owned by the student, rather than treating supplied beds and desks as part of the outgoing inventory.
Review books, clothes, study equipment and personal kitchen items, distinguishing shared items from the student's own property. A focused partial-packing visit may suit those retained contents better than full furniture preparation. Obtain the housing program's actual access and checkout instructions and any permitted outside help; an ordinary campus parking pass does not establish the moving arrangement.
Pack released study materials and seasonal clothes first, retain the current coursework and personal arrival group, and check the room and cupboard interiors before handover. The result is a smaller, correctly owned shipment and a clear packing boundary, with no assumed removal of University furniture or automatic housing approval.
Consider: separate mainland and island receiving groups
Imagine a household dividing belongings between a mainland home, agreed storage and a Peaks Island address. Start with three inventories and confirmed receivers. The guide's island chapter explains why the accepted vehicle or freight method and the last journey from the landing must be settled separately.
Write the next destination, receiving room and useful contents on each carton. Add a carton number and opening priority; optional colors reinforce the words rather than replace them. Use an attached paper label on a customer tote. Mark protected furniture and associated parts consistently. Keep the groups distinct in the permitted preparation area and match them to the loading and receiving instructions.
The storage group needs an intake inventory and an agreed later release and delivery plan. The island group needs protection appropriate to its accepted transfers and conditions, with a person to receive it. A label does not reserve freight or approve a landing handover. The result is that each group reaches the correct next stage without being opened merely to discover where it belongs.

Consider: returning to unpack after a busy arrival week
Suppose delivery has finished but a household is still living around kitchen and linen cartons while working and caring for children. A later unpacking visit can address those agreed groups without reopening every room. Send the current carton list, room photos, priorities and available dates; a later visit requires its own confirmed availability and scope.
Release a clean, usable kitchen surface and the bedding area first. Open those cartons, check their contents and put items on the agreed surfaces. Leave renovation rooms and low-priority storage closed. If cupboard placement is also wanted, have the person making household decisions available and choose a crew size they can comfortably direct.
Keep empty cardboard, used paper and film separate from retained belongings as work progresses. Portland's collection guidance calls for loose recycling in the blue cart, while a building with another collection arrangement needs its own instructions. The useful result is usable priority rooms and a defined remaining list, with material removal and any return visit priced separately.
Protect the contents through carrying, loading and travel
The contents need support inside the carton as well as protection on the outside. Individually protect ordinary dishes and glass, cushion suitable groups and close a sound carton without forcing its flaps around protruding contents. Framed pieces, lamps, glass shelves and cabinet doors need methods suited to their construction. Point out condition concerns and high-value items during the review.
Protection continues through the carry, supported loading, restraint and vehicle movement. Carton strength, weight distribution and a stable load matter alongside wrapping. Clean handling and suitable gloves should match the material and grip; the same glove is not appropriate for every object. A staged photograph cannot specify a method for an unseen fragile item.
Fine art, antiques or items needing a crate belong in an individual specialist review. Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee; complex furniture needs its own quote. Protect the body before safely removing long legs, retain the complete protected part set and matching hardware, and empty ordinary dresser drawers while keeping them in the protected body. Identify genuinely loose parts separately.
For a separate purchase, use furniture delivery; for rearranging pieces already in the home, use in-home moving. Those tasks are different from opening household cartons.
Choose the level of receiving help you want
Basic box unpacking opens the agreed cartons and places their contents on suitable available surfaces. Prioritize the kitchen, bedding or another useful group, protect the receiving surface and keep a clear route. Used paper and open cartons show work in progress; they do not mean every cupboard is finished or the whole home is organized.

Home organizing adds final placement according to the customer's instructions. Decide which cupboard, drawer or shelf receives each group, identify items that remain undecided and keep one household decision-maker available. A smaller crew can be easier to guide through those choices. Agree the work and price individually rather than assuming organizing is included in basic unpacking.
Identify requested handyman work, wall material, fixings, permissions and the intended result individually. Hanging a picture or mounting a television requires a different review from putting plates into a cupboard. Agree any technical or electrical work, who will perform it and connection requirements before the visit. A finishing visit covers only the tasks and permissions agreed for it.
For a long-distance move, schedule receiving help around the actual delivery arrangement. The delivery window starts after pickup and loading are complete. Direct service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery; a suitable small consolidated shipment has a wider agreed receiving window. The Portland long-distance page explains those choices. Confirm the unloading appointment before relying on a separate unpacking crew or tradesperson.
If possession or room readiness changes, agree an actual storage and later-delivery arrangement, access needs and extra handling before using it. Keep needed personal items outside that storage group. A possible facility or unconfirmed appointment is not a receiving plan.
Compare the complete paid scope
Packing labor is charged for working time, and company-supplied cartons are separate. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate basic protection-material charge. Optional box unpacking is charged for working time; directed organizing, specialist preparation, handyman work and packaging removal need their own reviewed terms. Your estimate should show which services and materials you selected.
| Part of the plan | What changes the work |
|---|---|
| Packing labor | Actual cupboard contents, fragile handling, sorting already completed and usable preparation space |
| Cartons and specialist protection | Types, quantities, supplied versus customer materials, and any separately reviewed crate |
| Preparation visit and moving day | Separate access appointments, retained final-night groups and the approved carrying period |
| Receiving work | Cartons to open, suitable surfaces, directed final placement and a same-day or later visit |
| Other stages | Storage, another destination, accepted island transfers and removal of empty materials |
Adding full packing to a move can bring the combined budget toward twice the cost of moving the same shipment already packed. It can be below or above that illustration; it is not a standard multiplier or a quote. Compare the same belongings and access, including cartons, return travel, optional work and any external building, permit or freight charges.
For a substantial inventory, four packers on an earlier day and six movers for the carry could be one assessed arrangement, not a staffing promise for every larger home. Receiving work might add three or four hours to a suitable delivery day or be handled by two people on another agreed visit. Contents, access, decision-making and availability determine the actual plan. The reason to book help may be usable evenings and an earlier return to ordinary life, rather than a lower cash total.
For an unchanged long-distance shipment and agreed services, the agreed flat rate stays the same even when travel or delivery takes longer. Added contents, extra packing, another stop or changed access can change scope; have the affected work reviewed and agreed in writing. A packing time illustration does not become a ceiling on a time-based service.
Keep empty packaging separate and choose its next route
Check paper folds and carton corners for small retained parts before clearing the materials. Gather empty cardboard, used paper, plastic film and foam separately inside the authorized area. Keep them away from goods still being unpacked and from the active walking route. Removal needs its own agreed scope and price.
The City's Trash & Recycling guidance requires loose recycling in the blue cart and says Styrofoam goes in the City's purple trash bags rather than recycling. It also distinguishes residential collection from commercial properties, whose owners retain a private contractor. Confirm the arrangement for your actual building instead of filling a shared cart or assuming a business can use household collection.
ecomaine's Recycling 101 says to flatten cardboard and keep plastic bags and film out of single-sort recycling. Remove mixed packing material before recycling the cardboard. Follow the property's current collection or accepted drop-off instructions for the remaining streams. The City curbside page also says the recycling cart stays with the property when you move.

If unpacking reveals furniture you no longer want, separate that item from the empty packaging. Use junk removal and disposal to arrange a separate item review and accepted removal route. The Portland guide explains municipal starting points, including island differences. Do not set furniture outside before the applicable collection has accepted and scheduled it.
Send the information that makes the packing plan concrete
Send both addresses, dates and the packing option you want, with photos of open cupboards and retained belongings. Include floor, stairs, elevator instructions, legal loading position, available preparation area and the time each part of the home can be released. Name any island, storage or second receiving address at the start.
List your own packing, requested company packing, final-night group, fragile pieces and optional receiving help separately. Tell us which rooms and surfaces will be usable at delivery and who can direct final placement. We can then recommend the appropriate inventory review, identify materials and put the agreed work into an estimate.
For wider planning, use the Portland relocation guide and Maine moving page. They cover the local and state decisions without requiring you to choose a packing method before contacting us.
Portland packing and unpacking questions
Can I book packing without handing over every room?
Yes. Choose full household packing, named rooms or groups, or selected fragile items. Write down what the crew prepares and what you will finish, including cupboards and belongings in secondary storage. Optional box unpacking is a separate choice.
What does full packing mean for the final night?
The crew prepares the retained contents in the agreed scope, while a named final-night group stays usable until its agreed packing time. Keep personal documents, medicines, valuables and arrival essentials with you; release nonessential cupboards first.
How do you estimate cartons for a Portland apartment?
We review the actual retained contents, including open cupboards, books, clothes, kitchen items and secondary storage. A room count or floor area cannot determine carton quantities. Photos or a video review help choose materials and the preparation plan.
Should I sort belongings before the packing visit?
Yes. Identify what moves, stays, has an accepted new owner or needs separately agreed removal before paying to prepare it. You do not need to pack the contents booked for company packing. Keep personal essentials clearly separate.
Can packing and moving happen on one day?
They can for a suitable smaller inventory when the agreed work and access fit. A fuller apartment or larger home may benefit from an earlier packing day. Assess the contents and permitted work period instead of treating bedrooms or additional workers as a completion guarantee.
Does an earlier packing day require building permission?
It may. Confirm when materials, packers and furniture preparation may enter and where finished groups may remain. A loading or elevator appointment does not automatically authorize an earlier visit. Keep shared exits usable.
What is the Portland street-occupancy lead time?
The City publishes a five-to-ten-business-day application window and requires payment before issuance. Treat the approved street arrangement separately from the building access period, and assign responsibility for the application and documents. The local guide gives the fuller parking procedure.
Are a West End home and a campus room the same packing job?
No. Review the actual contents and access. A home may include collections and stored belongings, while Portland Commons supplies bedroom furniture described by the University. Identify personal versus supplied property and obtain the housing program's actual move instructions.
Can you pack only dishes, glass and framed pieces?
Yes. Define the selected fragile group and the remaining customer packing. Ordinary dish protection, removable furniture glass and high-value art need methods suited to their construction; identify anything requiring specialist assessment or a crate before the visit.
How should books and hanging clothes be prepared?
Use manageable book cartons and a suitable supported wardrobe carton for selected hanging clothes. Review the contents, weight and carton condition. Identify destination rooms, and tell us about customer materials so unsuitable containers can be addressed before loading.
Do labels need more than a color?
Yes. Write the next destination, receiving room and useful contents, with a carton number and opening priority where helpful. Colors can reinforce those words. Attach a paper label to a customer tote and keep the inventory consistent with loading and receiving instructions.
How do I separate an island shipment from goods staying on the mainland?
Create separate inventories and clearly identified groups for each next destination. Confirm the accepted island vehicle or freight method, every handover and the receiver before setting the delivery plan. Carton labels help handling; they do not reserve transport or approve landing access.
What if some belongings go into storage?
Separate the storage inventory and agree intake, any needed access, release and later delivery with their charges. Keep daily essentials outside that group. Storage and another handling stage need confirmed arrangements rather than an assumed place to wait.
What does basic box unpacking include?
It opens the agreed cartons and places contents on suitable available surfaces. Choose priority rooms and keep those surfaces ready. It does not automatically place every item inside cupboards, organize the whole home or remove the packaging.
Can I request unpacking after delivery day?
Yes, a later visit can be arranged for selected unopened groups or remaining rooms. Send the current inventory, photos, priorities and available dates. Confirm crew availability, access and charges for that visit; the original delivery does not reserve an automatic return.
How is home organizing different?
Directed organizing places belongings in the cupboards, drawers or shelves chosen by the customer. Keep a decision-maker available, identify undecided items and agree the scope and price individually. A smaller crew may be easier to guide through those decisions.
Does unpacking include hanging pictures or connecting equipment?
No automatic finishing or technical scope is included. Identify requested mounting or handyman work, wall material, hardware, permissions and result separately. Agree any technical or electrical work and who will perform it separately; ordinary cupboard placement is a different task.
How are packing labor and materials charged?
Packing is charged for working time and supplied cartons are separate. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate basic protection-material charge. Optional box unpacking uses working time; specialist work, directed organizing and material removal need their own reviewed terms.
Is twice the moving cost a fixed packing price?
No. Packing plus moving can approach twice moving the same shipment already packed, but may be below or above that illustration. Compare the actual inventory, labor, cartons, access, visits and optional work. It is neither a multiplier used for every home nor a time ceiling.
When should I arrange unpacking for a long-distance move?
Plan it around the selected delivery model and confirm the actual unloading appointment before relying on separate receiving help. Direct service has a dedicated truck and the same crew; a suitable consolidated shipment has a wider agreed window. Delivery windows begin after pickup and loading are complete.
Will a longer journey change the agreed long-distance flat rate?
For unchanged inventory, access and agreed services, the agreed flat price stays the same when travel or delivery takes longer. Extra contents, packing, stops or changed access can change scope; have that work reviewed and agreed separately in writing.
Can empty cartons and plastic film go together in the blue cart?
No. Keep accepted recycling loose and separate mixed packing materials from flattened cardboard. Keep bags and film out of single-sort recycling. Portland directs Styrofoam into its purple trash bags. Follow the actual building collection arrangement.
Can you take away the empty packaging?
Yes, removal can be selected with its own agreed scope and price. Check folds for small retained parts and keep cardboard, paper, film and foam separate. A commercial property uses its private contractor arrangements; do not assume household collection covers every location or company load.
What should I send for a useful packing estimate?
Send the addresses, dates, retained contents and the packing boundary, with open-cupboard and access photos. Include building instructions, any island or storage stage, the final-night group and optional receiving help. Name the person who can make placement decisions and any firm deadline.
