Moving to Texas: A Practical Guide

Explore Texas cities, from major urban neighborhoods to the Gulf Coast, High Plains and desert west. Compare moving arrangements, prepare both homes and make a clear plan for arriving.

Texas planning

Choose the Texas setting that fits your life

Texas offers more than one version of city life: Houston's neighborhoods and cultural districts, the separate cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio, coastal communities and the very different landscape around El Paso. Start with the twelve city portraits when you are still choosing a place. The map gives you a statewide orientation; county profiles and additional community names help you look beyond the first familiar city.

Once you have a destination, turn that choice into a household plan. Identify the home, the belongings you will take, the work needed before collection and the person who can receive. An urban apartment, a low brick house and a raised coastal home may each require a different sequence, even with similar contents.

Sterling Oakbridge plans interstate household moves involving Texas. Send both addresses and your dates for a review of the route and work. Information here about Texas-only movers helps explain a separate process; it does not establish a local Texas office or availability for every move within the state.

Texas cities and regions
Explore twelve Texas cities across several distinct regions. Use the city portraits and county profiles to narrow the setting you want to investigate.

Texas planning

Explore several Texases before choosing an address

Houston and the upper Gulf Coast. Houston's downtown, Museum District, Montrose and older neighborhoods offer different starting points. Galveston is a separate island and port city with historic streets and a coastal setting. A Houston-area search and an island-home search should include different daily destinations and property questions.

North and Central Texas. Dallas and Fort Worth are distinct cities within a wider region containing many other municipalities. Austin combines central neighborhoods, university activity and entertainment districts; San Antonio has its own river, historic neighborhoods and cultural destinations. Waco offers another Central Texas setting around the Brazos. Compare a particular home with the journeys you expect to make, rather than treating a regional name as one neighborhood.

The west, east and south. El Paso's desert mountains and border-city history differ from Lubbock's High Plains setting. Tyler provides an East Texas starting point, while McAllen introduces the Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi the coastal city. These portraits are an invitation to investigate, not a ranking or a promise that every part of a city offers the same housing or daily experience.

Houston

Houston offers a large urban setting with downtown towers, cultural destinations around the Museum District, Montrose and older residential neighborhoods. Choose the everyday places you want within reach, then compare the actual neighborhood and home. A Greater Houston address may be in a separate municipality; the regional label is not a description of one kind of housing.

San Antonio

San Antonio brings together the River Walk, historic streets, arts in Southtown and the Pearl area, alongside many residential settings. Explore a neighborhood beyond its best-known attraction before narrowing your home search. Tourism districts and nearby independent cities should not be treated as one municipal boundary or one uniform daily experience.

Dallas

Dallas has downtown and Uptown settings, the Arts District, Deep Ellum and distinctive areas such as Bishop Arts. Urban green spaces and adapted commercial districts provide different ways to explore the city. Compare the individual home and daily journey; a Dallas-area listing may be in another city within the wider region.

Austin

Austin combines central neighborhoods, the University of Texas area, live music districts and places around South Congress and East Austin. Begin with the activities and destinations you expect to use regularly. A central apartment and a home farther from the center can create very different routines and moving arrangements.

Fort Worth

Fort Worth is a city in its own right, with downtown, the Cultural District, Near Southside and the historic Stockyards offering different starting points. Explore the residential areas that connect with your daily plans, rather than using one visitor district to judge the entire city or treating it as interchangeable with Dallas.

El Paso

El Paso places an urban border-city setting beside the Franklin Mountains and the Chihuahuan Desert. Downtown arts and historic districts offer a different starting point from neighborhoods elsewhere in the city. Compare the particular home and approach with the journeys you will make; a regional border identity does not define a household-moving service across that border.

Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi offers a Gulf Coast city setting with coastal attractions, waterfront activity and separate beach areas to explore. Look beyond a holiday view to the actual neighborhood, home and daily destinations. Confirm the actual living level and receiving access individually rather than assuming every coastal address is a beach house.

Lubbock

Lubbock introduces a High Plains city with music and heritage destinations such as the Buddy Holly Center and National Ranching Heritage Center. Compare its neighborhoods and everyday destinations alongside the particular home. This is a different regional setting from the Gulf Coast or the larger eastern metropolitan areas.

McAllen

McAllen provides a Rio Grande Valley starting point, with city parks, shopping and cultural activity. Town Lake at Firemen's Park is one place to begin exploring the urban setting. Compare the actual neighborhood and home with the wider Valley communities; McAllen is a particular city, not a name for every nearby address.

Galveston

Galveston is a historic port and island city, where older streets and Victorian architecture sit near the Gulf. Compare an established neighborhood, an apartment and a coastal home as different choices. The actual property's level, stairs and arrival route matter more than an island label when the household move is arranged.

Two joggers use a paved path beside a broad river and a Waco-style city backdropTX

Waco

Waco brings a Brazos River setting, downtown shops, Cameron Park and a university presence. Visit the places you expect to use beyond a single attraction, then compare neighborhoods and individual homes. Its Central Texas location provides another starting point for a search distinct from the larger Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth markets.

Rose beds and paved garden paths lead past benches and a civic-style buildingTX

Tyler

Tyler offers an East Texas city setting with the Municipal Rose Garden as one recognizable place to explore. Use the city as a starting point for comparing neighborhoods, homes and the daily destinations that matter to you. A garden visit can introduce the setting, while the particular property needs its own practical review.

Texas planning

A long Texas journey can still be a Texas-only move

The governing moving process depends on the actual shipment and journey, not simply the number of miles. A move entirely within Texas can be intrastate even when the two homes are far apart. A short trip across a state line is interstate. Tell the planner about an earlier or later transport leg, storage and the final destination so the arrangement is classified correctly.

For a Texas-only household shipment, use the TxDMV consumer resources and check the proposed operator's active certificate. For an interstate shipment, check the carrier and any broker through FMCSA. A familiar business name, an attractive truck or a website listing several cities does not establish the authority for your specific job.

Ask which business contracts with you, which carrier transports the goods and who is your coordinating contact. Keep those names aligned across the proposal and shipment documents. The company work described on this page is interstate household moving involving Texas; arrange a separate operator and scope check for a Texas-only request.

Show the complete path from the truck to the room

An access review is most useful when it follows the journey the furniture will actually take. Begin at the proposed stopping place, continue along the driveway or sidewalk, and show every entrance, stair, elevator and turn before finishing in the room. Give the measured carrying distance and the clear dimensions at restricted points. Include a garage or storage collection if it is part of the shipment.

For a detached home, show gates, branches, low overhead lines, a narrow drive and the space available for turning. Ask the owner about any private road or bridge and the ground's suitability for the planned vehicle. At a shared building, obtain the loading entrance, service-elevator arrangement and allowed working hours from management. An open curb or adjacent driveway is not permission to use it.

The team can then review the vehicle and handling method before quoting. If a transfer, longer carry or different entrance is needed, agree it while there is still time to prepare. Keep gate codes and other private access information out of public photographs. A representative scene cannot replace the details of your actual address.

Texas planning

Understand a Texas-only moving proposal

For a household move within Texas, the TxDMV brochure says the department does not regulate movers' fees. Compare the actual work and written terms rather than expecting a single statewide price. A binding proposal sets the agreed exact price; a not-to-exceed proposal sets a ceiling and permits a lower charge.

The mover must provide the written proposal and moving services contract before loading. Describe the inventory, packing, stairs, elevators, carries and extra stops accurately. Check the payment date and accepted method. Additions should be agreed in writing; do not rely on a verbal assurance about work omitted from the documents.

Use the Texas consumer guidance and the current rights brochure with the proposed carrier. These Texas-only arrangements are separate from an interstate proposal and from Sterling Oakbridge's same-scope long-distance flat rate. A charging threshold or estimate rule from another state should not be applied to the Texas shipment.

Texas planning

Look beyond the bedroom count

The contents and layout determine the moving work more directly than a home's floor area. A furnished condo can have more fragile pieces and tighter turns than a larger detached house. A townhouse can put everyday living upstairs; a coastal home's arrival level can sit below the rooms you need. Show the actual route instead of assuming that the street photograph explains the property.

Measure each large piece with its feet, handles and other projections, then compare it with every opening and turn. Record stair width, landing space and elevator opening and cabin dimensions. A sofa may fit through a door but have nowhere to turn beyond it. Decide which room it belongs in before cartons occupy that route.

Identify furniture assembled inside the room, built-ins, heavy glass, previous repairs and anything fixed to a wall. Tell the team about fresh finishes or unfinished construction. At a condo or managed rental, get the building's own booking and insurance-document requirements. Keep the entry usable for other residents while planning the delivery.

Texas planning

Verify the Texas carrier and read the liability terms

Use TxDMV's Truck Stop lookup to check an active Texas certificate and match the carrier's name to the proposal. Read the supplied Texas rights brochure before loading. A separate certificate for a building and the carrier's liability for household goods answer different questions.

Texas-only liability is an agreement to read carefully, not an automatic full-purchase-price promise. The brochure describes written limits and distinguishes the mover's liability from separately purchased transit insurance. Establish the actual terms before choosing a protection arrangement, particularly for valuable or owner-packed belongings.

For a fee, loss or damage dispute, the current Texas guidance calls for a written claim within 90 days of delivery. Preserve the goods, containers, photographs and documents. Its mediation process follows the carrier claim; consult the current instructions promptly about the 35-day request period after an unsatisfactory offer or denial, or an unanswered claim after 90 days. Interstate claims have their own process. A delivery notation and an informal conversation should not be assumed to complete either claim procedure.

Texas planning

Keep the carrier, documents and protection choice connected

An interstate booking should identify the carrier and any broker, the household contents, services, payment and delivery arrangement. Use FMCSA's consumer resources to check registration and USDOT information. Match those identities to the documents, and establish who will arrive if another business arranged the booking.

Read the estimate, bill of lading and inventory as connected parts of the plan. Check that extra stops, packing, difficult access and storage stages are described. Keep copies with you, including any agreed change. Do not sign blank documents or treat an incomplete inventory as a complete price comparison.

Understand the selected liability option and any high-value-item conditions before loading. Interstate Full Value Protection differs from a written Released Value election, generally 60 cents per pound per article; separate insurance is another arrangement. Ask about owner-packed contents and any storage handover. Retain evidence and follow the carrier's written claim procedure if something is missing or damaged.

Texas planning

Prepare for heat, storms and a changed arrival plan

Check the weather and road conditions at both homes shortly before the move. A date that works at the collection address may conflict with a storm or unsafe approach at the destination. Use local alerts, the Texas Hurricane Center and DriveTexas when conditions could affect the household or journey. Follow an evacuation order rather than trying to preserve a furniture appointment.

For ordinary heat, keep drinking water and the household's essential supplies readily available. Arrange a safe place for children, pets and anyone who should be away from the work. Keep medications with you and confirm that the receiving home can be occupied as planned. Do not leave a person or animal in a parked vehicle while dealing with the shipment.

For rain, keep an unobstructed entrance and agree protection appropriate to the floors and walking route. For dangerous flooding or ice, contact the coordinator and receiver about another arrangement. Do not attempt a flooded approach to keep a date. A changed collection, storage stage or receiving day should be recorded clearly, including any changed work and charges.

Texas planning

Separate a truck route from permission to unload

A route map does not reserve a curb, loading bay or building entrance. Ask the property manager or relevant local authority how the truck may stop, whether a reservation or permit is needed, and which hours apply. Send the location, signs, carrying distance and any time limit to the team. Arrange a practical alternative if the preferred space cannot be used.

TxDMV's oversize and overweight resources concern vehicles and loads exceeding legal dimensions or weight, with a permitted route where applicable. They do not mean that every household-moving truck needs such a permit. The carrier reviews its actual vehicle, road restrictions, clearances and destination approach; a passenger-car route is not enough to settle those questions.

At the property, keep the path connected from the lawful stopping point to the entrance. A gate, landscaping, construction delivery or another booked vehicle can interrupt an apparently simple plan. For an apartment, coordinate the loading space and elevator appointment together. Confirm the final instructions close to the date and tell the coordinator promptly if management changes them.

Texas planning

Choose the preparation that the contents need

Packing can cover selected fragile objects, particular rooms or most of the household. Decide what you will finish yourself and what the team should prepare. Give a realistic view of cupboards, books, dishes, electronics and garage contents; visible furniture alone does not describe the workload. Identify an unusual item early enough to review the method and materials.

Use cartons that can be carried and closed properly. Keep heavy contents manageable and give fragile pieces suitable cushioning and separation. Photograph equipment connections before disconnecting what you are responsible for. Confirm any item the carrier cannot transport before it is packed, and keep valuables, travel documents and regular medicines with your household.

For the agreed Sterling Oakbridge interstate work, packing is charged for working time and supplied boxes are separate. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate basic-material charge. Specialist preparation needs an item-specific review. At delivery, furniture unwrapping is included; emptying cartons is optional work charged for time, and packaging-waste removal is separate.

Texas planning

Decide how the large pieces will travel and fit

List the pieces needing more than a simple lift: beds, tables, sectional parts, cabinets with glass and furniture attached to a wall. Send photographs of joints, attachments and previous repairs, with assembly instructions where available. Some furniture can be partly dismantled; other pieces may be weakened by another disassembly. Have that decision reviewed before the collection day.

Basic disassembly and reassembly use moving labor time without a separate basic assembly charge in the agreed company work. Fixed installations, complex mechanisms, particularly heavy items and specialist operations need individual assessment. Do not assume that a general furniture service includes every technical trade or that the person surveying the job will perform each specialist operation.

Agree the placement at the destination and label components so they remain associated with the right item. Keep small fittings securely identified within the agreed packing method. The receiving route must be clear before large furniture arrives. Protection is removed from furniture during delivery; carton unpacking and waste removal are separate choices, so decide those tasks before the household expects the rooms to be finished.

Texas planning

Read the housing figures as background, not available homes

The 2024 ACS five-year estimates describe about 12.13 million Texas housing units. Detached single-unit homes make up 64.4% of that total. That is useful statewide context, but it does not tell you whether the home you choose has stairs, a service elevator, a sloping approach or room for the furniture. Apartments and other structures remain a substantial part of the stock.

The same source estimates 375,168 units built in 1939 or earlier, about 3.1% of all housing units. A statewide share cannot describe a particular historic street in Galveston, San Antonio or Houston. Inspect the candidate home's actual layout and condition rather than inferring them from its age or city.

Owner and renter figures use occupied homes as their denominator. Of about 10.99 million occupied units, 62.6% are owner-occupied and 37.4% renter-occupied. They are not shares of all structures or a list of current listings. The dated table below keeps these definitions separate. Use current property details and your own needs to make the housing choice.

Texas planning

A mobility figure does not measure moving-company demand

The 2024 ACS one-year estimate reports that 1.8% of Texas residents age one or older lived in another U.S. state one year earlier. It describes prior residence among the state's current population. It is not net migration, the number of households using a mover, or the number of shipments arriving in a particular city.

The percentage also does not explain an individual's reason for moving or show which neighborhood will suit you. A work location, relatives, a preferred type of home and everyday activities may point you toward very different parts of Texas. Choose those priorities first, then compare the actual places and properties.

Keep the decision to relocate separate from choosing the transport plan. Once a home is selected, its access, your contents, the dates and the receiving arrangement determine the moving work. A state's popularity cannot establish a carrier's route, price or availability. The Census sources provide dated context; they do not provide a live household schedule.

Texas planning

Crossing a nearby border changes the planning context

Texas adjoins New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. A household moving from the Texarkana area across the state line, or from El Paso into New Mexico, needs the interstate process even when the journey seems local. Ask for the full origin, destination and transport arrangement to be reviewed rather than relying on a shared regional name.

Each end has its own property and street arrangements. The destination may require a reserved elevator, a different truck approach or an authorized person available during specific hours. A short journey still needs a complete inventory, agreed work, documents and receiving plan. Confirm any extra stop or storage location before the quote is finalized.

For a longer journey from the Northeast or another region, use the same approach to the actual addresses. Geographic proximity or a map line does not promise a particular arrival day. A route involving Canada has additional document and border stages. The international border near several Texas cities does not itself establish a household-moving service to Mexico.

Texas planning

Build around keys, appointments and the person receiving

Start with the dates that cannot move: when the old home must be empty, when you can enter the next one and when the building permits the work. Add the receiver's availability and any separate storage or specialist appointment. Distinguish these constraints from a preferred travel day so the team can see where the plan has flexibility.

Choose direct or suitable consolidated delivery against those needs. A household able to live without most furniture for a wider window has different options from someone with one elevator slot. Do not treat an estimated driving time as an unloading appointment. Loading, lawful travel, actual access and the receiving work all need to fit together.

Ask when each stage will be reconfirmed and which contact handles changes. Keep flights, cleaners, contractors and lease handovers from depending on an unconfirmed furniture arrival. If keys or construction may be delayed, decide how storage and later receiving would work before the belongings are collected. Put changes to work and price in writing.

Texas planning

Compare dedicated delivery with a wider-window shipment

Direct delivery uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and drop-off. Discuss it when the household needs a closely coordinated receiving plan or has limited flexibility. The team reviews the contents, loading, real route and access before proposing the journey. The delivery clock begins after pickup and loading are complete.

Consolidated delivery is available for suitable smaller shipments with a wider agreed window. Eligibility depends on the actual belongings and route; a low bedroom count is not enough to decide. Keep the things you will need during that window with you and make sure the receiving arrangement can accommodate it. Same-crew delivery is not promised for consolidation.

The confirmed maximum windows are destination-specific: up to 60 days for Florida or Canada and up to 90 days for California. A Texas destination needs its own agreed terms; it does not inherit the California limit. These are limits, not predicted arrival dates, and they do not include an automatic free-storage promise. Compare both choices against your household's actual needs.

Common moving situations

How the plan changes with your needs

These conditional planning examples illustrate decisions, not actual customer jobs or promised savings.

A Dallas building with one service-elevator slot

A household plans interstate delivery to a building offering a limited unloading appointment.

What to do. Confirm the loading bay, elevator size and receiver, then review the delivery model against that appointment.

Why it helps. The proposal includes the real receiving constraint instead of treating a driving estimate as a booked delivery.

A small Austin shipment with flexible receiving

Someone has selected belongings to transport and can manage without them during a wider window.

What to do. Compare eligible consolidation with dedicated delivery, including essentials, the written window and any storage charges.

Why it helps. The household chooses on usable timing and total work rather than assuming a small shipment always follows one schedule.

A raised Galveston home

Living rooms are above the arrival level, and a large sofa must reach them.

What to do. Show the actual stairs, landings and openings and have any proposed lift use reviewed with the owner.

Why it helps. The team can agree a feasible handling method before a loaded vehicle reaches the property.

An El Paso lease ending before the next home opens

The old property must be empty while the destination remains unavailable.

What to do. Arrange storage, inventory and later receiving as explicit stages, with essentials kept outside the shipment.

Why it helps. The gap and redelivery are included in the household plan instead of depending on an unconfirmed immediate handover.

Texas planning

Plan the Canadian paperwork before the shipment leaves

Canada is within Sterling Oakbridge's confirmed household-moving scope, subject to review of the goods, route, dates and work. Prepare the person's entry arrangements and the household shipment together. A border stage cannot be planned only after the truck has been loaded, especially when some belongings travel with you and others follow.

CBSA's moving or returning to Canada guidance explains who the personal-effects provisions cover and the lists needed for accompanying goods and goods to follow. Ownership, prior use and restricted-item conditions matter. Keep the required documents with you and arrange the first-entry and later shipment steps for your circumstances; do not assume every item enters duty-free.

Explain any storage, separate transport or later delivery at the outset. Identify who is responsible at each handover and which inventory and protection terms apply. An air or sea leg, another country, or a Mexico destination should be raised as a separate request. The United States and Canada scope described here does not establish those other services.

Texas planning

Compare the complete job rather than two headline prices

Make each proposal describe the same belongings, addresses and services. Include cupboards, garage contents, storage collections, packing and large items. A short list that leaves out half the contents can produce a smaller-looking price without providing a useful comparison. Use a video or an in-person review when photographs and a list cannot explain the shipment.

For Sterling Oakbridge long-distance flat-rate work, the price stays the same for the same agreed shipment and service scope. A longer journey or delivery taking more time does not alone change that price. Added belongings, a different destination or extra services need a revised written scope and price. Make these distinctions clear before the work changes.

Read the included preparation, access, protection, storage, delivery and optional unpacking together. Basic assembly labor, packing time, separate supplied boxes and waste removal should not disappear behind a single general phrase such as full service. Do not choose a plan from an unverified price-per-bedroom estimate. The useful quote is the one tied to the household you actually intend to move.

Texas planning

Use a sequence that leaves room to resolve the hard parts

When you choose the home: gather the inventory, large-item details, photographs and date constraints. Obtain building or owner instructions and identify the proposed stopping place. Ask about any item, approach or appointment that could prevent the plan from working.

Before collection: agree the written work, price, protection, payment and delivery arrangement. Finish your part of packing, identify what stays behind and separate travel essentials. Confirm keys, permissions and the receiver. Tell the coordinator about changed contents or access before the team arrives.

On the moving days: keep the route clear, retain the documents and make an authorized person available. At delivery, direct furniture placement while rooms remain accessible, check the inventory and condition, and record concerns before signing. If the move includes storage, use the agreed handover rather than assuming the next stage will happen automatically.

After arrival: follow up promptly on any separate written claim, finish optional unpacking and keep the important documents together. Begin the new-resident appointments early enough to meet the applicable vehicle and license requirements. A useful timeline is based on the actual household and properties, not an unsupported universal number of days.

Texas planning

Have a usable home and an informed receiver ready

Before delivery, confirm that the household can enter and use the intended rooms. Working keys, lighting, essential utilities and a clear path matter as much as a signed closing or lease. Tell the coordinator if floors are unfinished, contractors still occupy the entrance or a room is unavailable. A delivery appointment should reflect those actual conditions.

Prepare a simple placement plan and give it to the authorized receiver. They need the inventory, relevant scope, contact details and enough time to check the goods. If you cannot attend, arrange that person explicitly rather than relying on a key left somewhere. At a managed building, match the person, loading bay and elevator appointment.

Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. Decide whether you also want carton unpacking and separate waste removal, or will do those tasks yourselves. Keep packaging available when a damaged item needs inspection and use the separate claim process. Avoid filling narrow halls with cartons before the large furniture has reached its rooms.

A mover lifts a moving blanket from a placed recliner.

Texas planning

Give the gap between homes its own plan

Storage can bridge a gap when the old home must be empty before the next one is usable. Agree the receiving location, inventory, protection, charges, access to belongings and later delivery before collection. A place to put the goods is only one part of the arrangement; somebody must also be available and authorized at each handover.

Carrier storage-in-transit and a delivery into customer-controlled storage can involve different custody and document arrangements. Ask where the carrier's delivery is completed and how any subsequent collection will be booked. Confirm who checks condition and records the inventory at the transfer. Do not assume a later redelivery or access to a buried carton is included.

Keep enough clothing, medicines, work equipment and household essentials with you for the whole gap, not merely one night. A wide consolidated-delivery window does not establish free storage. If the period changes, update the receiving and cost arrangements in writing. Tell the team as soon as a closing or construction delay becomes likely.

Texas planning

Settle the essentials and separate the new-resident deadlines

Begin with a usable bed, bathroom and simple place to eat. Keep medicines, identification, travel papers, chargers, clean clothing and supplies for children and pets with your household. Check keys, essential utilities and safety equipment, and leave the working routes clear as you unpack. Arrange waste removal rather than letting packaging block the entrance.

For most new residents bringing a vehicle, TxDMV says to register it within 30 days of moving. Use its current checklist for insurance, ownership documents, Form 130-U and the county tax office. The January 2025 checklist explains that noncommercial safety inspections ended, while applicable emissions inspections remain; commercial vehicles have different inspection requirements. Check the current rules for your vehicle and county.

DPS handles driver licenses and IDs separately. Its current guidance allows qualifying valid, unexpired out-of-state licenses for up to 90 days after moving; vehicle registration is part of the preparation for a Texas license. Book the relevant appointments and review exceptions and document requirements. Do not apply a single 90-day deadline to all the paperwork.

Texas planning

Bring the choices into one practical household plan

Before booking, be ready to state what moves, who prepares it, where each transport or storage stage occurs and who receives. Add the dates that cannot shift and the access arrangements at both homes. A specific unresolved choice is easier to solve than a general promise that everything will be handled later.

Use the city portraits and county guides for place research, then use your actual address to define the work. Choose direct or suitable consolidated delivery against the household's flexibility. Review packing, furniture preparation, optional unpacking and any storage separately so the written proposal matches what you expect to happen.

Keep the coordinating contact, inventory, proposal, protection choice and building instructions available during travel. Share private codes through an appropriate private channel. Reconfirm changed dates or contents in writing and leave an informed receiver ready. For an interstate household move involving Texas, send the two addresses, belongings and date constraints to begin that review. The next step is a plan for those particular homes, rather than a price or arrival promise inferred from a statewide guide.

Planning answers

Texas moving questions

Straightforward answers about prices, packing, delivery and getting settled.

Ask about your move
Does Sterling Oakbridge handle moves involving Texas?

Yes, interstate household moves involving Texas are within the company scope described here, subject to review of the route, contents, dates and services. Send both addresses and explain what needs packing or special handling. A Texas guide or city portrait does not establish a local office or automatic availability for a Texas-only move.

Where should I start if I have not chosen a Texas city?

Compare the twelve city portraits, map and county guides against your own daily destinations, housing needs and preferred setting. They span major urban areas, coast, High Plains, East Texas and the border region. Then investigate the actual neighborhood and current property. The guide does not rank cities or infer suitability from a statewide statistic.

Is a long move inside Texas always interstate?

No. Distance alone does not make a household shipment interstate. A journey entirely within Texas can be intrastate; crossing a state line or another transport stage may change the process. Give the carrier the complete origin, destination and journey so it can identify the governing arrangement and documents.

How do I check a Texas-only mover?

Use TxDMV's Truck Stop carrier lookup, check an active Texas certificate and match the legal name to the proposal. Read the current Texas rights brochure before loading. For an interstate carrier or broker, use FMCSA instead; a company's name or truck marking is not enough to establish authority for your shipment.

What is the difference between binding and not-to-exceed in Texas?

For a Texas-only move, a binding proposal states the agreed exact price; a not-to-exceed proposal states a maximum and allows a lower charge. Read the work, inventory, payment and written-change terms with the moving contract before loading. These proposal types should not be replaced by a charging rule copied from another state.

Does an interstate flat rate stay fixed if travel takes longer?

For the same agreed shipment and service scope, Sterling Oakbridge's long-distance flat rate stays the same; a longer journey or delivery duration alone does not change it. Added belongings, changed addresses or extra services need a revised written scope and price. Keep the inventory and included work complete when comparing proposals.

What does direct delivery mean?

It uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and drop-off. The team reviews the actual contents, route, loading work and receiving arrangements before proposing timing. It is useful to discuss when the household needs closer coordination, but a map distance or passenger-car driving time does not itself guarantee an arrival day.

Can a small Texas shipment use consolidated delivery?

It may be suitable after the contents and route are reviewed. Consolidation has a wider agreed delivery window and does not promise the same crew at both ends. Check whether your household and receiver can manage that window, and keep essential belongings with you. A small apartment alone does not establish eligibility.

When does the delivery clock start?

After pickup and loading are complete. Agree the actual window and receiving arrangement in writing before collection. A Texas destination needs its own terms; the California maximum does not automatically apply. Consolidated limits for particular destinations are not predicted arrival dates or an automatic free-storage allowance.

Can I use any available curb or loading bay?

Only when the street or property arrangements allow it. Ask management or the relevant local authority about permission, reservations, restrictions and hours, then give the team the location and carrying distance. A truck route or oversize permit does not reserve the space. Agree an alternative if the preferred place cannot be used.

What details matter for a raised coastal home?

Show where the truck may stop, the arrival level, stairs or approved lift, landings, doors and the full route to the rooms. Give clear measurements for large furniture and obtain the owner's instructions. Do not assume that every lift may carry household goods or that a coastal address has the same access as another home.

What should change if flooding or an evacuation threatens the move?

Follow official instructions and contact the coordinator and receiver about a changed plan. Use DriveTexas and local alerts close to travel; do not enter a flooded approach to keep an appointment. Another collection date, storage or later receiving may be needed, with the actual changes to work and price agreed in writing.

Can I book packing for only fragile belongings?

Yes, selected items or rooms can be included in the agreed interstate work as well as broader packing. Explain what you will finish yourself and identify unusual pieces in advance. Packing uses working time; supplied boxes are separate. Blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate basic-material charge.

Will the team empty all my boxes at delivery?

Furniture is unwrapped as part of the agreed delivery. Taking contents out of cartons is optional work charged for time, and packaging-waste removal is separate. Decide those tasks before delivery and tell the receiver what is included. Keep packaging available when a damaged item may need inspection.

Is basic furniture assembly a separate charge?

Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Identify the pieces and joints in advance. Complex, fixed or specialist items need individual review; some furniture may be unsuitable for repeated disassembly. Do not assume a general furniture service includes every technical operation.

Does mover liability mean full replacement insurance?

No. Read the actual liability agreement and any separate insurance policy. Texas-only terms and interstate valuation choices differ; a limited liability amount is not a promise to reimburse the purchase price. Discuss high-value items, owner-packed contents and storage stages before signing, and keep the written selection with your shipment records.

How do I report damage after a Texas-only move?

Record the issue, keep the goods and packaging, and send the mover a separate written claim. Current Texas consumer guidance uses a 90-day deadline from delivery and explains the later mediation process. Act promptly and use the current instructions. A note on the delivery document should not be assumed to file the claim; interstate claims follow their own process.

What if my Texas home is not ready when I must leave?

Arrange a storage stage before collection. Agree the location, inventory, protection, charges, access and later delivery, including who checks and signs at each handover. Keep essentials for the whole gap with you. A wide delivery window does not mean free storage, and a customer-controlled storage delivery can end one stage before another collection begins.

Can someone else receive the shipment for me?

Yes, when an authorized receiver is agreed in advance. Give them the inventory, placement plan, contact details and the work they should expect. They need access, enough time to check delivery and clear signing instructions. A key left at the property is not a complete receiving arrangement.

Which documents should stay with me?

Keep identification, travel and entry papers, moving documents, the inventory, protection selection, contact details and essential property instructions with your household. Medicines and valuables should also remain accessible. Avoid packing everything into one carton that may be unavailable during a wider delivery window or a storage gap.

How soon must a new Texas resident register a vehicle?

TxDMV generally requires vehicle registration within 30 days of moving. Use its current checklist for insurance, ownership or registration evidence, Form 130-U and the county tax office, and review any applicable exception. Noncommercial safety inspections ended in 2025, but applicable emissions inspections remain. Check your vehicle and county rather than using an old general inspection checklist.

Is the driver-license deadline also 30 days?

DPS's current guidance allows qualifying valid, unexpired out-of-state licenses for up to 90 days after moving. Vehicle registration and a Texas driver license are separate processes, and registration evidence is part of preparing the license application. Review the current DPS requirements and exceptions and book appointments early; do not apply one deadline to all documents.

Can Sterling Oakbridge plan a Texas-Canada move?

Yes, subject to review of the household goods, route, dates and services. Use CBSA guidance to prepare the accompanying and goods-to-follow lists and the entry arrangements for your circumstances. Keep documents with you and plan any storage and later delivery before loading. Eligibility for duty-free personal effects depends on the actual conditions.

Does an El Paso or McAllen move include transport to Mexico?

The confirmed company scope described here covers the United States and Canada. A Texas border-city address does not establish a Mexico-moving service. Identify any other international destination or additional transport leg at the beginning so the actual request can be reviewed separately, rather than assuming it is included.
