Movers in Dover, DE
Sterling Oakbridge movers help Dover homes and businesses with local and interstate moves, packing, storage and specialist services. Share your addresses, dates and inventory so we can review the work and prepare your estimate.
01 /
Plan the move around the actual Dover address
Start with the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the date you can take possession and the belongings that need to move. A Dover mailing address does not settle whether City parking, utility or collection arrangements apply. Verify the municipality and the individual building before treating a citywide summary as permission for a particular property.
A front door near the street can still involve a narrow landing, steps or a route around parked vehicles. A development with private parking can require an owner's approval for the truck. Explain both ends of the move, including any shared entrance, basement, garage or separate storage stop.
Use the Dover relocation guide to compare housing areas and prepare school, utility and collection tasks. This page explains the moving scope and what the planning contact needs from you.

Choose the services your move requires
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |
| Interstate moving | Pickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when needed | Destination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment |
| Commercial moving | Office and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictions | Business type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect |
| Packing and unpacking | Selected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpacking | What you will pack and what you want us to prepare |
| Storage and staged delivery | Storage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery plan | Expected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage |
| Designer and hotel furniture receiving | Receiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed plan | Expected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site |
Describe what you want to do yourself and what you want included in the moving scope. Identify belongings that will be packed before arrival, rooms that need packing help and anything that must remain accessible through the final night. If the move involves storage or more than one stop, provide the expected sequence and the receiving arrangements for each location.

Coordinate a business move with the receiving building
For an office, shop or other business, plan the work around the inventory and the building's actual operating requirements. Identify workstations, shelving, files, stock and any equipment that needs preparation by its owner or a qualified service provider. Assign someone who can decide where items go and resolve questions at both ends.
Ask the building manager about loading access, elevator reservations, insurance documentation and permitted work hours. A customer entrance may be unsuitable for equipment, while a shared delivery bay may be committed to another occupant. Agree the receiving route before packing departments into the order in which they should arrive. Explain any business interruption constraints without treating them as a confirmed completion guarantee.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

Check entrances, stairs and managed access
Photograph the route from the proposed truck position to the rooms that contain the largest pieces. Include the usable door opening, each turn, stairs, railings and the landing at the top. Measure furniture and the narrowest parts of its route; a building's age or a neighborhood name cannot establish whether a sofa will fit.
For a townhouse, apartment or shared property, identify the person who can authorize a loading position and provide keys. Confirm work hours, protection requirements and whether a reservation is needed. If access crosses private land, obtain the relevant owner's agreement. Explain any required gate or base-access screening before scheduling the arrival.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which City or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Arrange a lawful loading position in Dover
The City explicitly refers requests for temporary parking exceptions, including moving vans, to the Police Department. Its parking-permit guidance caps temporary permits at thirty days; that is a maximum duration, not a published application deadline or a reserved-space guarantee.
Begin with Dover Police non-emergency contact, 302-736-7111, and ask how to arrange the exception for the exact address, date, hours and truck. Provide the length of space needed and explain any ramp or pedestrian conflict. Ask who applies, what fees or documents apply, whether signs are authorized, who posts them and how an occupied space is handled. Obtain the actual approval and instructions before planning around that curb.
If the arrangement obstructs a lane, sidewalk or public right-of-way, ask whether Public Works or the road owner must also approve it. The City's maintenance and construction permit is a separate instrument; its construction notice periods do not establish the moving-van process. Residential stickers, a paid parking space and private loading approval serve different purposes.
Keep an authorized alternative available. If the expected space is unavailable, coordinate with the responsible official and the moving contact before using another position. The guide explains the full parking decision path.

Pack for handling, access and the first night
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.
Allocate a destination room to each carton and keep essential belongings separate. Medicines, keys, documents, chargers and items needed before the main unpacking should travel in a clearly identified personal bag. Do not bury the information needed for receiving the shipment among cartons that will be loaded first.
Use a suitable small carton for dense books and larger cartons for lighter contents such as linens. Tell the planning contact about artwork, delicate surfaces, unusually heavy pieces and anything whose packing requirements are uncertain. Photograph complicated assemblies before disconnecting them, retain their hardware together and establish who will perform any required appliance or equipment preparation.

Make the estimate reflect the actual work
Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total
Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.
A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.
Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price
For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.
The usable carrying route, inventory and agreed services matter more than a neighborhood label. Provide the floor, stair details, distance from the proposed truck position and any building time limit. Explain extra stops, storage, packing and specialist handling at the outset so they can be reviewed as part of the scope.
Keep public permit charges, possible police details and building charges visible as separate planning questions. A municipal fee table is not a moving-company quote. When comparing estimates, compare the inventory, services, timing assumptions and exclusions behind each one. Send material changes before the move rather than expecting the original estimate to cover a different access route or additional belongings automatically.

Agree the sequence and protection arrangements
Dedicated long-distance moving
Our dedicated long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and delivery, with the same moving crew at pickup and drop-off. Confirm the pickup, delivery and any storage stages in your move plan. The survey and move-planning team performs a separate role from the crew carrying out the move.
Confirm the contact at pickup and delivery, the order of any stops and how a change in readiness will be communicated. If keys or an elevator reservation are delayed, tell the planning contact before the truck arrives. Discuss any storage or additional handling that an alternative would require and obtain the revised arrangements before authorizing it.
For an interstate move, review FMCSA consumer guidance alongside the mover's written documents. Keep the inventory, estimate and agreed service details available, and ask about any term you do not understand before signing.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

Prepare the approach for weather and local restrictions
Assign responsibility for the whole carrying route, including the public frontage, front walk, steps and landing. Dover's ordinance adopted May 12, 2025 requires adjoining sidewalks to be clear of snow and ice within twenty-four hours after snowfall ends and to remain clear afterward. A legal deadline does not establish that a particular route is ready for carrying furniture.
Check the approach again shortly before arrival. Meltwater, fallen leaves and wet steps can change conditions after an earlier inspection. Keep cartons and protective materials clear of drains and public passage. Confirm current street notices and any building restrictions if weather or nearby works change the original arrangement.
Tell the planning contact promptly if possession, access or safe unloading becomes uncertain. Discuss the practical alternatives, including any storage or rescheduling needs, before accepting additional work or assuming that the truck can simply wait at the curb.
10 /
Keep decisions and access clear on the day
Walk the route with the receiving contact before unloading begins. Point out the rooms, any item that needs particular handling and anything excluded from the move. Keep children, pets and visitors away from the carrying path. Have keys and entry instructions available without posting private access codes in shared paperwork.
Confirm that the truck arrangement matches the authorization and that common entrances remain usable. If an obstruction or changed building rule prevents the agreed method, stop to resolve the change with the responsible people. At delivery, check room placement while the crew is still present, retain the agreed documents and complete a final walk-through for belongings or equipment that may have been missed.

11 /
Request an estimate with access details
Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
Add the Dover parking status: proposed truck position, intended applicant and any open question for Police or Public Works. Include the inventory, packing choices, stairs, carrying distance and building time limits. Send photographs and measurements where access is uncertain so the review can identify the remaining decisions before the date is committed.

Questions before you move
What should I include in a Dover moving estimate request?
Provide both addresses, the inventory, dates, packing needs and access details. Include stairs, carrying distance, building restrictions, extra stops and the status of the proposed truck position.
Does Dover offer a temporary parking exception for a moving van?
The City directs moving-van exception requests to Police and limits temporary permits to no more than thirty days. Ask for the address-specific application, timing, fees, posting and enforcement instructions; the duration limit is not an application deadline.
Does a residential parking sticker reserve the truck space?
No reservation is established by the residential sticker guidance. Ask Police about the temporary exception and any separate space-control arrangements, then confirm the permitted loading position.
Can you help with packing, storage or specialist items?
Describe the work and belongings in the estimate request. Review the service options above and confirm the agreed scope, preparation responsibilities and any storage sequence in writing.
Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
How should I prepare an older entrance?
Measure the door, stairs, landing and turns, photograph the full approach and identify the largest pieces. Confirm who can authorize any change to doors, railings or shared access before moving day.
What happens if keys or the loading position are unavailable?
Tell the planning contact before arrival and agree a lawful alternative with the property or public authority. Any change involving storage, timing or extra handling needs a separate review of its practical consequences.
