New Jersey / City relocation guide

Moving to Princeton, New Jersey

Moving to Princeton starts with the home and the routine it can support. Compare central streets and wider residential settings, plan the real school and travel connections, and arrange the documents, accounts and receiving conditions that make arrival work.

Princeton municipality boundary and your home choice

Princeton is one municipality in Mercer County: the former Borough and Township united in January 2013. The university is one part of the place, and a Princeton postal address can lie in another municipality. Use the property’s municipal address for schools, public services and permits.

For a home search, start with the eight comparisons and housing questions below. For a family, read school registration alongside the daily route. Once an address is chosen, use the account, loading and arrival sections to turn the handover date into a usable home. The municipal overview provides the wider context.

The map shows the complete current Census municipality. Its numbered road junctions orient selected comparisons, not exact historic-district, school or parcel boundaries. Use the Historic Preservation office for property-specific review rather than infer designation from an area name.

Compare eight Princeton home-search contexts

Compare a home and the journeys it supports. Historic names and explicitly described road contexts orient the search; the map points do not draw district limits or assign schools.

Nassau Street and Palmer Square

The central business district combines shops, offices and some homes, facing the university along Nassau Street.

Housing & setting
Compare the actual apartment entrance, shared stairs, sound and storage rather than assume a central address provides every amenity.
Daily travel
A central home can support walking to the library and many errands; test the route to your own work and food shopping.
Before choosing
Include private parking, deliveries and evening returns in the decision. A garage space and a truck loading position are different arrangements.

Witherspoon–Jackson

This historic Black community has close-set homes, porches and a continuing neighborhood identity north of downtown.

Housing & setting
Compare the actual home’s usable rooms and maintenance duties; a historic label does not establish present condition.
Daily travel
Try the route toward downtown and your regular shops with the crossings and load you will actually use.
Before choosing
Inspect the complete entrance and any shared drive. Ask Historic Preservation about proposed exterior work at the particular property.

Mercer Hill

Historic homes and institutional properties sit together around Mercer, Alexander and Stockton Streets.

Daily travel
Walk the route to the specific campus building or town destination you need, rather than use the university’s name as a single address.
Before choosing
Campus permissions, public-road rules and the housing agreement have separate owners. Confirm the entrance and receiving arrangements.

Battlefield and Stony Brook approaches

The southwest includes historic resources, open landscapes and residential settings around the Battlefield and Stony Brook.

Northern State Road and Arreton Road

State and Arreton provide a northern road anchor; the historic estate context includes buildings adapted to residential use.

Compare housing costs, rental certificates and responsibilities

Compare the full monthly cost: rent or ownership costs, property charges, utilities, parking, internet, maintenance and the transport your household will still need. Ask for the actual lease, included services and renewal terms. An apartment above a business, an older detached home and institutional housing have different entrances and responsibilities.

The municipal rental office distinguishes ordinary rental certification from fire compliance. One- and two-family rentals normally have a two-year Certificate of Compliance that can remain valid through tenant turnover. A change of occupancy still requires the applicable smoke/CO compliance certificate. Ask the owner for the current documents before committing to the handover.

For a three-or-more-unit property, individual apartment inspection is a State DCA responsibility, with separate common-area fire oversight. Room rentals need zoning approval first. Princeton reports no municipal rent control; that does not remove the lease or applicable New Jersey tenant protections. Set out in writing who handles repairs, snow, outdoor space and utility accounts. For an older rental, ask which lead-inspection and certificate requirements apply to that unit.

Daily travel: walking, the Loop and the Dinky connection

Living without a car is most workable when the home is within a practical walk of regular shopping and the town or campus destinations you use. Central and nearby residential streets offer that possibility; a more distant home needs a stronger transport plan. Include groceries, children’s activities, evenings, weekends and trips beyond Princeton, not only the commute.

The free Princeton Loop is open to everyone Monday–Saturday, excluding its listed holidays. The Express connects Princeton Station and the Shopping Center, with published operating hours of 6 a.m.–8:30 p.m.; the Local serves housing, downtown and shopping from 7:30 a.m.–9 p.m. Use current stop information and TripShot for the trip. It is not a Sunday or all-night service.

The Dinky connects Princeton Station with Princeton Junction, where you change for Northeast Corridor trains toward New York Penn or Trenton. For Philadelphia, a typical public-transport chain continues through Trenton and SEPTA; plan the actual connection and fare for your date. Princeton Junction has its own station parking arrangements; a town permit does not cover them.

TigerTransit is free and open to all, but routes vary with the academic calendar. Its Fall 2026 page separates semester and break service. Match the exact stop and both directions. If the last connection fails, a prearranged lift, available paid ride or another confirmed journey needs to fit the household’s budget.

Walking and cycling can cover short daily journeys where the route, crossings and conditions suit the person. Try the return with the load and at the hour you need. For residents who do not drive, locate an accessible bus stop and a reliable alternative for trips outside service hours before relying on the address.

Princeton school registration and address-based placement

Start PPS pre-registration online. After approval, the district emails the remaining forms. Prepare the child’s identity and health records, the applicable primary residency document and three secondary proofs. A signed current lease is one primary option; university or seminary housing has its own letter option. Previous school records and high-school transcripts are also required where applicable.

Use the March 2026 residency manual for the exact address: some streets are split by number, side or housing complex. Neighborhood names and the nearest building do not assign a school. The district registration page explains Community Park’s DLI choice for kindergarten and first grade, and reassignment of nonparticipants or later-grade entrants zoned there. Agree placement and transport with the registrar.

Public preschool is free, with eligibility, completed registration and placement handled separately. The program uses a lottery or waitlist when demand exceeds seats; moving into town does not guarantee an immediately available place. For a midyear arrival, ask the early-childhood office about current openings and the next valid application dates. Plan the first journeys until school transport is confirmed.

For an in-district address change, notify Central Registration and supply the original new lease or deed and updated secondary proofs. A new school assignment requires a transfer. For living with relatives or friends, use the registrar’s affidavit and owner-meeting process. If usual proofs are unavailable, housing is unstable or an IEP/504 must transfer, contact the registrar for the applicable route and records rather than assume the normal lease packet fits.

Everyday library visits, outdoor space and local routines

A resident can obtain a free Princeton Public Library card with valid identification and a qualifying residency proof, such as a current lease or utility bill. The current card policy follows the municipality, not simply a Princeton ZIP code. Apply online or bring the documents to the Checkout Desk. Borrowing, study spaces and the Library of Things can help while the home is being set up.

Build a normal week around the actual food shop, library, school or work destination and an outdoor route the household can use. Compare the walk and crossings from the property; a nearby landmark is less useful if the return does not fit the person, hours or weather.

The municipal historic guide describes town settings as well as park and canal contexts. Treat a public park, university grounds and a private garden according to their own access rules. At home, check whether outdoor space is private or shared, who maintains it and what furniture or deliveries it can receive.

Princeton utility accounts: electricity, water and internet

The municipal utility guide identifies PSE&G for electricity and gas, New Jersey American Water for most homes, and the municipal Sewer Department for sanitary sewer. Confirm the exact address and existing service: a provider’s town coverage does not establish that every unit has a separate meter or gas connection.

Assign each account before handover
ServiceResponsible starting pointWhat to establish
Electricity and gasPSE&G and the lease or ownerAccount holder, existing meters and confirmed transfer or connection date
Water and sewerNew Jersey American Water and municipal sewer billingWhether the home has public service, who receives each bill and what the lease includes
InternetThe provider available at the specific unitInstallation access, equipment, activation and a temporary option if needed

Ask the owner or provider to confirm the start, not merely receive the request. Photograph relevant meter readings at handover, keep confirmations available and arrange a working contact method. If essential service or access will be missing, choose a confirmed alternative for the first night before sending the shipment.

Move-in packaging, trash carts and reserved bulk collection

Separate reusable materials, municipal trash, county recycling and items needing another route before unpacking generates a pile. The Town’s trash and bulk rules use the Princeton cart for ordinary residential collection; loose bags outside the cart are not collected. Use the address collection day. Ordinary cart set-out is 7 p.m. the previous evening–7 a.m. on collection day; the Central Business District uses 9 p.m.–6 a.m. Remove an empty cart by 11:59 p.m., or 10 a.m. in the CBD.

Bulk pickup is reserved, normally on Wednesday, for at most two qualifying items under 50 pounds each. Request by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. and wait for the assigned date before setout. Mattresses and box springs must be wrapped. Metal, electronics, appliances, building debris and several other materials are excluded, so a large clearout needs a separate agreed collection route.

MCIA recycling uses the County yellow or green buckets. Keep plastic film and other contaminants out; flattened cardboard has its stated separate set-out allowance. Store materials privately until the correct collection. Electronics use separate accepted routes, not the municipal drop-off or ordinary bulk pile.

The 2026 waste mailer has section-specific leaf, branch and log collection dates. Keep those streams apart from moving waste and preserve clear access. For a managed building, establish the property’s collection arrangements and where packaging can be stored before delivery.

Flattened cardboard and rolled packing paper stand separately from bagged plastic film beside a private exit.
Used paper and plastic film are kept separate.

09 /

Weather, leaf collection and university calendar changes

Allow for wet leaves, ice and darker return journeys when choosing the entrance and daily route. Assign snow clearing before the first winter weather. The sidewalk ordinance sets a 24-hour clearing duty after snow stops or ice forms, with a four-foot residential path and full corner-ramp clearance; the actual owner or occupant responsibilities must be arranged.

Check current storm and road notices, including any declared parking restriction, before using a booked curb position. Reconfirm travel during university breaks because TigerTransit service changes with the calendar, and share actual lease or institutional handover dates with the receiving contact.

10 /

Reserve loading space before the truck is dispatched

For an eligible metered location, the current meter-bag application is the starting point: at least 48 hours ahead, $15 per space per weekday, ending at 5 p.m. Evening and weekend use is excluded. Municipal staff install and remove approved bags. If the approved space is occupied, contact Police at 609-921-2100 rather than place your own barriers.

Non-metered reservations go through the Traffic Bureau at the same number, requested 48 hours ahead without a guarantee of availability. Fixed objects such as a dumpster also need the applicable Engineering right-of-way permission. Meter bags do not cover accessible spaces, an already reserved place or the listed project exclusions. The Parking Operations office can confirm a proposed arrangement.

Residential overnight permits are a separate Clerk/Zoning process for eligible streets and homes without on-site parking. Apply with an original signed lease or mortgage agreement and valid vehicle registration. The Clerk checks eligibility and issues the initial one-week permit while Zoning reviews the application. The stated charges are $10 for that week and $30 per quarter for the permit. Its overnight period is 6 p.m.–9 a.m.; it does not reserve truck space. On former-borough streets, parking longer than one hour between 2 and 6 a.m. is restricted without applicable permission. Arrange the household’s car parking and the mover’s loading position separately.

Match the whole vehicle and loading operation to the actual road authority, property and time window. If public space will not work, agree an authorized private position or another feasible receiving plan and its extra handling before dispatch.

11 /

Keys, stairs, lifts and the room that must work first

Receive keys and test the actual entrance before the truck arrives. Walk from the loading position through gates, stairs, landings and doors to the final room. Measure large pieces and identify vulnerable finishes. Agree how shared entrances remain usable and who can authorize a change.

For an apartment or institutional property, obtain receiving hours, lift bookings where needed, the approved door and any COI requirements. A preferred delivery date or campus affiliation does not create access. Keep the contact who can open and approve the property reachable.

Choose the first usable room and keep its floor and furniture route clear. Set aside bedding, a working light, chargers, food and personal documents. Check condition, placement and agreed assembly with the delivery contact before treating the household setup as complete.

13 /

A workable Princeton arrival and a confirmed plan B

Before committing to delivery, confirm the handover, required occupancy documents, essential services, lawful loading position and the person who can receive. Keep a clear inventory of what travels now, what stays and what may need storage.

If one of those conditions fails, decide before dispatch or as soon as the change is known. Name the household decision-maker and the property contact who can admit the crew. Choose a confirmed later delivery slot, an approved alternate entrance or agreed storage with a specific redelivery arrangement.

Identify who can approve extra handling, storage, redelivery or accommodation costs. Keep the household’s essential belongings and travel independent of the truck. Record who will confirm restored access or service, what condition allows work to resume and the revised receiving time.

Questions before you arrive

Can I live in Princeton without a car?

A central or nearby home can work without daily driving when regular shops, work and other destinations fit its walks and transit. The free Loop helps Monday–Saturday; the Dinky connects to Princeton Junction rather than directly to New York. Include evening and Sunday trips, groceries and a workable paid or arranged alternative before relying on the address.

Does a Princeton mailing address mean Princeton municipal services?

No. Princeton ZIP codes and the word Princeton in a development name can extend outside the municipality. Confirm the real property municipality before relying on school registration, library-card eligibility, utility arrangements or permits.

Does a new tenant always need a fresh rental inspection?

For a one- or two-family rental, an unexpired two-year municipal compliance certificate can remain valid after a tenant change. Fire smoke/CO compliance is a separate change-of-occupancy requirement. Ask the owner for the current documents and the rental or fire office to resolve the property’s branch before handover.

How do I register my child for Princeton Public Schools?

Begin online pre-registration, then follow the approval email for the remaining forms. Prepare the applicable primary residency document plus three secondary proofs, identity and health records, and previous school records where needed. Placement follows the exact address and program rules; confirm it and school transport with the registrar.

Is a public preschool place guaranteed when we move in?

No immediate place is guaranteed. Princeton offers free public preschool with eligibility and complete registration; a lottery or waitlist is used when applications exceed seats. For a midyear move, ask the early-childhood office about current openings, placement and the next valid application period.

Can we reserve a moving space for Saturday with a meter bag?

The current meter-bag program excludes weekend and evening use. For a Saturday move, agree another lawful loading arrangement with the property owner and responsible authority before dispatch; include any different vehicle or longer carry in the plan.

Can we leave unwanted furniture with the ordinary trash?

Only qualifying bulk items use the separate reserved route: normally Wednesday, at most two items under 50 pounds each, with the request due Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Wait for the assigned date. Excluded materials and a larger clearout need another confirmed disposal route.

What should be ready before our furniture arrives?

Have the keys, required occupancy documents, essential services, lawful loading position and receiving contact confirmed. If one fails, decide before dispatch or when the change becomes known, choose a confirmed alternative and agree costs and the condition for resuming. Keep first-night essentials with you.
