Movers in Salem, NJ
Sterling Oakbridge movers help Salem homes, apartments and businesses with local and interstate moves, packing, storage and specialist services. Share your addresses, dates and inventory so we can review the work and prepare your estimate.

Start with the route and the work you need
Salem moves can involve rentals, houses, business premises or an interstate route. The ACS 2024 five-year survey estimated that about 65% of occupied city homes were rented; that describes residents, not the company's mix of jobs. For a rental, begin with the lease and building rules; for a purchase, confirm possession and the actual access route. Tell us which shape yours is, with both addresses and your dates, and we will plan the work around it.
The address itself tells us a lot. Salem runs a trash-sticker system — $1 a sticker, sold at named stores downtown — and a Saturday convenience center on Grieves Parkway, so a move-out cleanout is planned against that rhythm, not improvised. The Salem relocation guide covers housing, utilities, schools and city procedures; this page covers the move itself.

Choose the moving help you need
Your move may need local transportation, packing help, storage between leases or closings, specialist care for fragile or high-value pieces, or a long-distance shipment with an agreed price for an unchanged scope. Each is a different scope of work, so the estimate starts from what you actually need rather than a package.
Local moving covers Salem and the surrounding Salem County communities — Pennsville, Carneys Point, Woodstown and the townships included — with Wilmington across the Delaware. Long-distance moving covers interstate shipments. If your move needs both — for example, an apartment into storage, then delivery to another state — say so at the start so the stages are priced and scheduled together.
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |
| Interstate moving | Pickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when needed | Destination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment |
| Commercial moving | Office and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictions | Business type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect |
| Packing and unpacking | Selected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpacking | What you will pack and what you want us to prepare |
| Storage and staged delivery | Storage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery plan | Expected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage |
| Designer and hotel furniture receiving | Receiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed plan | Expected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site |

Plan a Salem business move around your hours
Salem's business addresses sit along Broadway and the downtown blocks — shops, services, professional and county offices around the historic courthouse square. A commercial move here ranges from a small suite to a storefront, and the constraint is usually your operating hours.
Send us the inventory of workstations, shelving and equipment, the access at both ends, and your operating constraints — which hours you can be offline and what must run first at the new address. We plan the sequence so the interruption stays short.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

Plan the carry from the truck to the room
In Salem the access survey splits by stock. Rowhouses and older singles: the porch or stoop, the older front door, the narrow stair with a landing turn, the basement stair. Apartments: the shared entry, the steep stair, and doors framed before king-size furniture — measure the entry, the stair width and the landing depth before assuming a piece fits.
Two local checks belong in the survey. On the denser blocks, the truck position — curb, alley or side street — is decided from photos, not assumed. And in rentals, the landlord's written rules on the truck position and floor protection come before the day.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

The curb plan, and the sticker week
Salem’s truck position — curb, driveway or alley — needs an address-specific plan based on street photos, vehicle size, posted restrictions and the carrying route. Obtain the property owner’s instructions for private access. For a public curb or any proposed restriction or reservation, ask the City Clerk (856-935-0372 ext. 215) which department and approvals apply; the city also lists Police non-emergency at 856-935-0057. Confirm the answer and any conditions before moving day. A survey photograph does not authorize parking or obstruction.
One local rhythm matters on moving week: disposal runs on the city's sticker system — every trash bag needs a $1 sticker, sold at named downtown stores and the City Annex — plus the Saturday-morning convenience center at 515 Grieves Parkway, where bulk items are paid for in advance. A move-out cleanout is planned against that, with stickers bought before the packing starts. The step-by-step Salem parking section covers the curb plan and the disposal week.

Choose packing, furniture preparation and specialist care
Packing help scales from a few fragile cartons to a full pack. If your move includes a full kitchen, a basement of stored goods, or a rowhouse's upper floors — tell us which spaces are in scope so the materials match the work: books in small book boxes, wardrobes for closet contents, divided cartons for dishes.
The city's rules reward a planned cleanout: stickers on every bag (containers no heavier than 40 pounds and no larger than 32 gallons, bags no larger than 32 gallons), recycling in open containers — never plastic bags — and an item-specific disposal plan for larger pieces. Packing the "keep" list first and completely, and buying stickers ahead, is the difference between a clean move-out and a scramble.
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

What affects your Salem moving cost
Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total
Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.
A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.
Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price
For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.
Locally, the practical cost drivers in Salem are access and volume. A third-floor apartment with a tight stair takes longer than a level single; a long carry from a worked-out curb position lengthens every trip. The packing level you choose, disassembly, and any storage stage each change the total. The estimate reflects the work you describe — accurate floors, stairs and a real inventory make it accurate.
Disposal is mostly a schedule here: stickers at $1, the Saturday-morning window at Grieves Parkway, bulk items paid in advance. A cleanout planned that way is an errand, not a scramble.

From the first conversation to placement
Direct and consolidated long-distance moving
Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.
The review starts with your two addresses, dates and inventory. Before moving day we confirm the scope in writing: what is packed by whom, the access plan at both ends, where the truck stands, and the timing windows, including the backup plan if a closing, a lease date or a storm moves the date.
When the day comes, the crew works the confirmed scope: protect the route, load in the agreed order, place room by room at the destination, and reassemble what was disassembled for the route.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

Plan around the river-basin seasons and the month-end rhythm
For a Salem move, confirm the lease or closing date and the company’s availability early; if your handover falls at month-end, ask about that specific date and an alternative. Winter adds storm dates that can move a closing or a lease start.
Underneath sits the city's weekly rhythm: stickers on bags, the Saturday-morning center, and periodic bulk amnesty events announced by Public Works. Whatever the season: the estimate early, the date with a backup, the cleanout planned ahead.
10 /
Prepare for the day you actually booked
Before the crew arrives, clear the agreed curb space and the entry to its full width. Inside, clear the main walking route and set aside the items that travel with you — documents, medications, chargers, the kettle. In a shared building, confirm the hall window and give the neighbors the heads-up.
At the house, walk the route with the crew lead before the first carry: which entrance, which stairs, where the staging area is. A level route is dolly work — the efficient way to move dressers and cartons — so keep that path free of rugs, clutter and parked cars. If something changes mid-day — weather, a delayed key handover — say it early; the plan adjusts better in the morning than in the afternoon.

Tell us about your Salem move
Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
The more concrete the request, the more useful the answer: both addresses, preferred dates plus an alternative, the inventory or a room-by-room outline (basement included), the entry and any tight turns, packing expectations, and anything fragile or oversized. Photos of the largest pieces, the curb and the stairs help us price the actual work. For an interstate shipment, ask for the carrier's legal operating name and written terms; the federal Protect Your Move checklist explains what interstate movers must provide.

Questions before you move
Can I book a move entirely within Salem?
Yes. We provide local moving within Salem and the surrounding Salem County communities — Pennsville, Carneys Point, Woodstown — plus Wilmington across the river. Send both addresses, your dates, inventory and access details so we can plan the crew and work required.
Where does the moving truck park at a Salem home?
Review the actual curb, driveway or private loading place from street photos and the vehicle dimensions. Follow posted restrictions and written property instructions. Ask the City Clerk (856-935-0372 ext. 215) which department must approve any public-curb restriction or reservation, and confirm conditions before the date; a property owner’s consent alone does not authorize public-street use.
Do you handle apartment turnovers?
Yes. Tell us the unit and floor, the entry situation, the stair or elevator and any shared-hall restrictions. Photos of the route help us plan the carry and crew size. Obtain the landlord’s written moving instructions before the day.
How do I get rid of things I am not taking?
Every trash bag needs a fully displayed $1 sticker; the city FAQ names the 49 Deli, Salem Liquor, Parkers Jewelers, the Broadway Sunoco and City Annex, and says retailers may not charge more than $1. Containers must not exceed 40 pounds or 32 gallons; bags must not exceed 32 gallons. The 515 Grieves Parkway center is listed for Saturday 8 a.m.–noon, with listed bulk items $5 or five stickers paid in advance and no household trash accepted. Confirm bulk pickup with the Treasurer’s Office by Thursday 3:30 p.m. for Friday; do not place items out over 24 hours beforehand. Past amnesty dates are not a current booking.
Who provides water and sewer in Salem?
New Jersey American Water acquired the city’s water and wastewater systems on June 25, 2024. Use its Salem City page, MyWater start/stop service or 1-800-272-1325 to confirm the exact service address, account holder and handover dates. In a rental, check whether the landlord or tenant holds the account.
How is the price of a Salem move set?
Local moves are priced on the labor and time the work needs — volume, access (stairs, entries, the carry from the truck), packing level and any storage stage all shape it. Long-distance shipments carry an agreed price that holds while the shipment and scope stay as agreed. The estimate reflects the detail you give us.
Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
