Movers in Essex, CT

The view from the new home is one part of the decision. Getting your belongings through its doors is another. Sterling Oakbridge plans moves to, from and within Essex around the inventory, the access and the work you want finished at the other end.

01 /

Start with the belongings that are coming with you

A move may bring a whole household together, split belongings between two homes or leave part of a property in use. Walk through each room and storage area, then make those decisions visible in the inventory. Include garden equipment, cellar contents and items stored somewhere else.

Mark anything that stays with the property. If selected pieces go to relatives, storage or a separate address, identify the groups and receiving contacts before packing begins. That prevents an extra stop from becoming a surprise on the day.

Still comparing addresses? Our guide to moving to Essex covers the local arrangements worth checking alongside the house itself.

Choose how much of the work you want handled

You may want a crew to move a prepared shipment, help with selected packing or handle preparation across the home. Tell us what you intend to do yourself and where you want help, including work after delivery.

Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.

If part of the property stays occupied, agree a clear route and keep the belongings that are staying apart from those being loaded. A simple room-by-room plan helps everyone work from the same decisions.

Give the estimate the details that affect the job

Send both addresses, your preferred date, the inventory and the tasks you want completed. Add photographs of larger pieces and the entire access route: the proposed vehicle position, path, entrance, stairs and turns. Include extra stops, storage and anything needing separate preparation.

Let the scope determine the survey

A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.

Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.

The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.

Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

Review what the estimate includes and how the work is charged. If the shipment, date or receiving property changes, update the plan before moving day. An address alone cannot describe the work inside it.

04 /

Follow the path from the driveway to the final room

Front steps and a small landing can matter as much as an upstairs turn. Photograph them together so the approach is clear. Measure usable door openings and the space around fixed rails, ceilings and corners; a room measurement does not show whether a long piece can reach it.

Record any separate route to a cellar, upper floor or outbuilding. Show changes of surface outside and tell us which entrance the owner has approved. Discuss removing a door or altering a fitting before assuming it can be done.

We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.

The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

For shared premises, establish delivery hours and a contact who can resolve access questions. Keep the route free of the belongings that are staying.

Review the vehicle position for this property

A driveway suitable for a car may not provide the width, turning room or working space needed for the moving vehicle. Show its entrance, surface, overhead clearance and the space behind the proposed position. Confirm permission for shared or neighboring access with the responsible person.

If a public-road position is needed, contact the authority responsible for that road about the arrangement. Essex Public Works is a starting point for town-road questions. Do not assume the village name or a quiet-looking street establishes permission.

The town’s snowstorm parking rule prohibits street parking during snowstorms and requires cul-de-sacs to remain clear for plowing. Discuss another workable date or access arrangement when conditions affect the plan.

Keep the first night separate from the rest of the shipment

Set aside bedding, towels, chargers and a few kitchen essentials for arrival. Keep keys, personal documents, medication and travel belongings accessible to you. Label cartons for the destination room so delivery does not depend on remembering what was packed where.

Use small cartons for books and other dense items, and suitable larger cartons for lighter linens. Protect fragile pieces separately from heavy contents. If you pack part of the home yourself, agree what will be ready and what the crew is expected to finish.

Labor, materials and optional work

Item or taskHow it is charged
Basic furniture disassembly and reassemblyPart of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee
Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tapeNo separate charge for these basic protection materials
Boxes supplied for your moveCharged separately
PackingCharged for working time; boxes are separate
Unwrapping furniturePart of delivery
Unpacking the contents of boxesOptional work, charged for working time
Packaging and waste removalCharged separately
Complex furniture and other specialist workIndividually quoted after review

Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.

Include the items still in daily use in the preparation schedule. Lamps, loose shelves, wardrobe contents and the last kitchen cupboard can take longer than an already cleared room suggests.

Discuss awkward or delicate pieces before the day

Send photographs and dimensions of unusually heavy, fragile or difficult pieces, with any relevant maker’s instructions or condition information. Include the route at both properties. The receiving staircase may be the more important constraint.

Specialist services by individual quote

What needs attentionWork available for review
Complex furnitureBunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly
Heavy itemsPianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables
Art and collectionsFine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification
Hanging and installationPictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately
Business equipmentOffice furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route

Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

Confirm the preparation and handling agreed for each item. Specialist assembly or related work needs an explicit scope rather than being assumed from the general moving booking.

08 /

Plan around the work that needs to resume

For an office, shop or home workspace, identify what must be usable first. Separate essential equipment and records from stock or furniture that can be placed later. Label destinations against a simple room plan.

Agree loading access and receiving hours with the relevant owners or managers. Make someone available to answer placement questions, especially where the new layout differs from the old one.

Coordinate disconnection, installation and other technical appointments with their providers. Tell us how those arrangements affect the moving sequence without assuming unrelated technical work belongs to the crew.

09 /

Match the moving date to actual access

Confirm when keys will be available and who will receive the shipment. A hoped-for closing or tenancy date is useful for planning, but the delivery needs a property that can accept it.

If repairs, a handover or travel arrangements could delay access, discuss storage or another delivery plan early. Separate what you need during the gap from what can remain stored.

Tell us promptly when dates change. Keep the property contact, agreed access and moving arrangement together so an update reaches the right people.

10 /

Make the receiving rooms ready for decisions

Decide where the larger pieces should go and identify rooms clearly. Keep the delivery route clear of contractor materials and items waiting to leave. One available contact can resolve placement questions while the work is underway.

Direct and consolidated long-distance moving

Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.

Check the agreed tasks before the crew leaves and note any follow-up. A usable bed, somewhere to sit and the first evening’s essentials may be the right stopping point before the rest of the unpacking.

11 /

Keep protection and separate work clear

Discuss the protection choices for your move and any particular handling concerns. Keep the estimate, agreed scope and relevant documents together.

Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.

We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

If unwanted belongings or packaging need removal, agree that work and its destination separately. A facility’s rules and charges depend on the material; a moving booking does not guarantee acceptance.

Questions before you move

Do you handle local and interstate moves involving Essex?

Yes. We provide local and interstate moving. The inventory, requested work and access at both addresses determine the plan.

Does the same moving plan work in all three Essex villages?

The plan depends on the actual properties. Show the driveway or loading position, entrance, stairs and destination rooms for each address.

Can the vehicle simply park on the street during snow?

Essex prohibits street parking during snowstorms. Review current conditions and arrange suitable access or timing before relying on a street position.

Can you pack selected rooms rather than the whole house?

Yes. Identify the rooms or items needing help and what you will prepare yourself, then agree that division in the estimate.

Are basic assembly and protection materials extra?

Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.

Can you help with unpacking and packaging removal?

Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.

What if the receiving home is not ready?

Tell us promptly so storage or a revised delivery arrangement can be discussed. Keep the belongings needed during the gap separate.

Can unwanted furniture be included with the move?

Arrange any removal work separately, including its destination and charges. Confirm acceptance with the receiving facility or organization.
