Moving services for Paterson homes and businesses

Sterling Oakbridge can move your household, pack selected belongings or a whole home, and arrange storage between addresses. Tell us what you want handed over and what you will prepare yourself. An upstairs apartment, a managed condominium and a detached house can need different work even with a similar furniture list.

Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.

Paterson's Census QuickFacts reports a 26.9% owner-occupied housing-unit rate for 2020–2024. If you rent, identify who authorizes work in the shared entrance, stairway or loading area. If you own, include any common-property rules that still apply. Tenure does not settle the physical route or give permission to use the street.

Provide the complete destination, including a storage stop or second delivery. A move within Paterson, another New Jersey address and an interstate departure need their own journey and receiving plan. We review the actual inventory, access and selected services before agreeing to the work.

Building access, shared routes and stairs

Start at the proposed truck position and follow the route to the last room. Show the sidewalk, private path, entrance steps, vestibule, doors, turns and each staircase or lift. Include a basement, attic or rear entrance if belongings must pass through it. A photograph of the furniture alone cannot show the work between the room and the vehicle.

For an upstairs unit, record every flight and landing, the narrowest turns and the doors that must remain usable for neighbors. In an elevator building, identify every lift and transfer point, the permitted entrance and any shared use. Ask who can release doors or provide keys when the crew arrives.

We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.

The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which municipal or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Have the person authorized for the property confirm the working hours, entrance, protection and elevator arrangements. Send any COI wording, certificate-holder details, recipient and submission deadline. A requested slot remains unconfirmed until the building accepts it; the certificate and the actual booking are separate requirements.

For example, a second-floor apartment may have a straightforward front door but a tight turn at the top landing. Show that turn with the largest piece's dimensions and construction before selecting a carrying method. Keep the route clear and agree who will handle any authorized preparation.

Moving-truck parking and the final approach

Choose the working position together with the approved entrance. Include the actual vehicle, door opening, ramp if used, and carrying distance. A household's cones, an empty space or a building reservation do not by themselves provide municipal permission.

The Paterson street-obstruction code requires a DPW permit before placing an obstruction in a street or other public place. It also requires someone to receive goods deposited from a vehicle onto a street or sidewalk and immediately remove them. Plan a receiver and a direct route inside, rather than an unattended pile of cartons on the public path.

The same article's driveway-parking permit is for private passenger vehicles. Do not treat a resident's permit or permission from a driveway owner as a moving-truck authorization. For a proposed public-space setup, contact Public Works at (973) 321-1488 with the exact location, date, vehicle and equipment footprint. Establish the applicable approval, applicant, charges and deadline before relying on that position. The obstruction permit's fee schedule is not a universal moving-van reservation price.

A signed loading zone also needs its actual conditions checked. The City's 2026 Oak Street ordinance specifies commercial loading on one defined segment, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with a 30-minute limit; its effectiveness depends on the required signs being erected. That is a location-specific provision, not a citywide moving-day allowance. If a proposed bay cannot support the work, agree another permitted position or sequence before dispatch.

Have the coordinator review a vehicle-appropriate route and the final approach to both properties. A car route, postal entrance or nearby parking garage does not establish truck clearance, a usable final turn or permission to unload.

Packing before the move and first-night essentials

Choose full, partial or fragile-only packing and define the retained contents. Show open cupboards, books, clothing and stored belongings as well as the large furniture. A house's basement and attic, or cupboards shared between rooms, can add work that a bedroom count misses.

Agree what the crew prepares and what you will finish. Keep bedding, a simple meal set and work or school items usable until their agreed packing time. Medication, keys, documents, valuables and travel essentials stay under your own control. Label separate home and storage groups before packing begins.

Labor, materials and optional work

Item or taskHow it is charged
Basic furniture disassembly and reassemblyPart of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee
Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tapeNo separate charge for these basic protection materials
Boxes supplied for your moveCharged separately
PackingCharged for working time; boxes are separate
Unwrapping furniturePart of delivery
Unpacking the contents of boxesOptional work, charged for working time

Complex furniture and other specialist workIndividually quoted after review

Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.

An earlier preparation visit can help when access is permitted. Confirm its entry and work area separately from the carrying appointment. At the receiving home, choose priority cartons and suitable surfaces before requesting optional unpacking or final cupboard placement.

Furniture preparation and difficult pieces

Send photographs of the whole piece and any model or assembly instructions for a large wardrobe, mechanism bed, piano, exercise equipment or difficult sofa. Include the actual dimensions and the full route. The question is which preparation and handling method will let that item reach its intended room.

Empty contents before furniture protection. Ordinary empty drawers normally stay installed and secured in the complete piece. Review removable shelves, long detachable legs and matching fittings according to their construction; do not assume integral parts detach. Basic disassembly and reassembly use moving labor, while complex work needs its own review.

Specialist services by individual quote

What needs attentionWork available for review
Complex furnitureBunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly
Heavy itemsPianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables
Art and collectionsFine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification
Hanging and installationPictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately
Business equipmentOffice furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route

Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.

Prepare and protect the piece before handling, with a clear destination and route. If the agreed method cannot accommodate it, resolve the alternative before loading. Mounting, repairs and technical connections are separate tasks rather than an automatic result of placing furniture in a room.

Commercial moving, receiving and reopening

For an office, shop or another business project, identify the person who can authorize release at pickup and accept delivery. Provide the item list, loading and building rules, security requirements and the time when the space must return to use. Transporting a room's contents and restoring its operations are different responsibilities.

IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.

We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

Use labels that match the actual receiving rooms, desks or storage groups, and arrange the people needed to open the property and direct placement. Keep stock, private records and items staying behind distinguishable before the crew begins. The estimate should reflect additional preparation or specialist handling you request.

If the business depends on equipment, stock or a technical system being usable that evening, name its owner and the required sequence. Unloading alone does not establish that the business is ready to operate.

Moving estimates and separate charges

Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total

Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.

A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.

Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price

For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.

For a move that begins and ends in New Jersey, use its applicable intrastate terms and rates. The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs states that such movers must be licensed and provide a written estimate. Long mileage within one state does not by itself establish an interstate flat rate.

Compare quotations on the same contents, carrying route and selected services. Include stairs, long carries, restricted working hours, additional stops, packing, cartons, unpacking, storage and agreed specialist work. A lower number for an incomplete inventory is not the same work at a lower price.

Pickup, delivery, storage and moving protection

Direct and consolidated long-distance moving

Our direct long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and the same moving crew at pickup and delivery. For a suitable small shipment, ask about consolidated delivery with a wider agreed receiving window. We serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Confirm pickup, delivery and any storage stages in the written move plan. The planning team performs a separate role from the moving crew.

Confirm the actual delivery arrangement and who will receive the shipment. Direct delivery's dedicated truck and same crew should not be assumed for a consolidated service. A delivery window starts after pickup and loading are complete, not at an earlier packing visit. Send fixed receiving constraints before choosing the arrangement.

At both properties, identify the furniture and cartons that must become usable first. Prepare stable surfaces for selected unpacking and keep entry routes clear while the main pieces are placed. Give the receiver labels and authority to direct the agreed work; loading order alone does not replace receiving instructions.

Choose protection before the move

Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.

For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

09 /

Moving dates, access delays and a usable fallback

Give the dates you can accept at both addresses, the key handover and each property's working hours. Loading and unloading windows need a workable sequence with travel between them; they do not need to be identical. When a window is short, review whether permitted packing, materials delivery or preparation can happen earlier.

Agree a decision deadline before crew dispatch and before any alternative expires. Name the customer or other authorized person who can approve a change, the coordinator who will arrange it and the property contact who can accept entry. A pending closing, requested elevator slot or storage inquiry is not a confirmed resource.

If keys, the truck position or a usable receiving route will not be ready by that deadline, choose a confirmed alternative: a later accepted window, another permitted position, or available storage with a release and redelivery plan. Agree extra labor, handling, storage and transport charges before additional work. Identify where people will stay and which essentials remain with them during the gap.

If access fails on the day, pause the affected work while the authorized decision is made. Resume when the alternative's access, receiver, scope and costs are accepted. Do not unload onto a public sidewalk simply because the original appointment has fallen through.

10 /

Unwanted furniture and packaging removal

Separate belongings you retain from an authorized unwanted-item list before packing. For household furniture, the City's current garbage page directs residents to the RecycleCoach Bulk Pickup tab for free scheduling. The linked accepted-items list includes sofas and couches; items must be manageable by two people, loose items bundled or contained, and mattresses and box springs wrapped in plastic.

The bulk-waste code requires scheduling before curb placement and prohibits setting materials out before 6 p.m. on the day before their scheduled collection. Resident drop-off requires government-issued ID proving Paterson residency. Recyclables, commercial furniture and several specialist waste categories are outside that bulk definition. Do not assume a moving crew can use resident drop-off merely by carrying your items.

If you want help removing possessions or used packaging, request the selected items, carrying work and lawful receiving route as a separate paid scope. Basic unpacking can gather wrapping in the agreed area; taking it away is a separate task. Keep that arrangement distinct from the resident's municipal collection booking.

Request an estimate for your Paterson move

Let the scope determine the survey

For a household move within New Jersey, the goods must be inspected in person or by video before the written estimate, including a small job. Send an item list, photographs and the route details to start that review. For other work, our planning team will identify the appropriate level of review. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.

Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.

The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.

Start with both addresses, dates, the retained item list and the help you want. Add photographs of open storage, complex pieces and the whole carrying route, with floors, stairs, each lift and the actual entrance. Include building instructions, COI requirements, proposed truck position and receiving constraints.

You can contact us before every measurement is available. We will recommend the review method and identify the missing details that affect the proposed work. The useful result is an estimate for a defined inventory, achievable access and agreed paid stages, with a decision point for changes.

Questions before you move

Which services can I combine for a Paterson move?

You can request household moving with full, partial or fragile-only packing, storage between addresses and selected receiving help. Describe the rooms or contents you want handed over and the work you will finish yourself. The inventory, both properties and requested result determine the agreed combination; a service menu does not confirm a particular date or specialist method.

How is a move within New Jersey priced?

Use a written estimate for the actual inventory and access under applicable New Jersey intrastate terms. The State consumer source confirms the written-estimate requirement. For hourly work, estimated hours plan the job and are not a guaranteed cap. Distance within New Jersey alone does not turn the move into an interstate flat-rate shipment.

Can I reserve the curb by putting out cones?

Household cones do not themselves create municipal permission. Show the exact position, date, truck and equipment footprint to Public Works and establish the applicable approval before relying on it. Paterson requires a permit for an obstruction in public space, and a signed loading bay has its own location and time conditions. Confirm a permitted alternative before dispatch if the proposed position cannot support the work.

Does a driveway parking permit cover the moving truck?

Do not use that permit as a moving-truck authorization. Paterson's driveway-parking provision specifically concerns private passenger vehicles and contains further applicant and location conditions. Agree the commercial vehicle's actual working position and any public-space approval separately, even if the property owner can authorize use of a private route.

What do you need to review an upstairs apartment?

Show the route from the truck position through the entrance to the final room: steps, each flight and landing, narrow turns, doors and any lift or transfer. Add dimensions and construction for difficult pieces, and identify who authorizes shared-area work or provides keys. A floor number or furniture photograph alone cannot establish that route.

What if the building offers only a short moving window?

Review whether the actual carrying work fits the accepted window. Earlier packing, materials delivery or preparation may help when the property permits it. Fit the two addresses and travel into a workable sequence. Before dispatch, agree an accepted alternative, another stage or available storage if the original window cannot support the work; do not rely on an unapproved overrun.

Are furniture assembly and packing materials included?

Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.

Complex models, missing fittings and specialist work need review. Send the actual construction and route so the proposed method fits the item rather than assuming every piece is ordinary assembly.

Can you pack early, unpack and take away the packaging?

Yes, we can review an earlier packing visit with accepted access, and optional box unpacking at delivery or a later agreed visit. Keep the final-night group usable until its packing time. Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request. Final cupboard placement and any additional finishing tasks should be specified separately.

Can I put an unwanted sofa or mattress out for City pickup?

The City's household list includes sofas and couches, with items manageable by two people; mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic. Book the free pickup through the current City Bulk Pickup tool before setting items out. The code allows set-out no earlier than 6 p.m. on the day before the scheduled collection. Commercial furniture and other excluded categories need a different reviewed route.

What if the delivery keys or access are delayed?

Set a decision deadline before dispatch, an authorized person who can approve changes and a confirmed alternative. That may be a later accepted window, another usable position, or available storage with release and redelivery arranged. Agree additional costs, where people will stay and essentials to keep. If access fails, affected work pauses until the alternative and conditions for continuing are accepted.

Does a business move include reconnecting IT?

IT transport and disconnection can be reviewed as moving work; arrange reconnection, testing and startup with your IT team. Provide the inventory, release and receiving contacts, security rules and required operating sequence. Unloading equipment does not establish that the business or technical system is ready to use.

What should I send first for an estimate?

Send both addresses, dates, retained contents and the work you want. Include photos of open cupboards and storage, large or complex pieces and the complete carrying route, with building instructions and receiving restrictions. Identify packing, extra stops, storage, unpacking or removal. You can begin before every measurement is available; the review will identify what else changes the work.
