Movers in Columbus, OH
Sterling Oakbridge movers help Columbus homes and businesses with local and interstate moves, packing, storage and specialist services. Share your addresses, dates and inventory so we can review the work and prepare your estimate.

Build the plan around the Columbus property
A Columbus move may involve a porch and side entrance, a shared stair above a storefront, a managed apartment building or a business receiving area. Begin with the belongings and the full route at each end. An address in a familiar neighborhood does not establish a loading space, usable lift or permission to enter after hours.
Send photographs of the approach, changes of level and largest pieces. Identify the person controlling access, the distance from the proposed truck position to the door, and any separate storage room or additional stop. For a business, distinguish the entrance customers use from the entrance available for the move.
The Columbus relocation guide covers city procedures and six area comparisons. Confirm the actual municipality for each address: a Columbus mailing address or regional description is not enough to establish which public-space rules apply.

Choose the help that matches the work
Sterling Oakbridge provides local and interstate household moves, commercial moving, packing and storage. Choose the work you need, then let us review the inventory, access and timing for your estimate.
| Moving help | What we can include | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Local residential moving | Loading, transport, delivery and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Both addresses, inventory, dates and the route through each property |
| Interstate moving | Pickup, transport and delivery arrangements, with storage when needed | Destination, date constraints and the person receiving the shipment |
| Commercial moving | Office and business furniture, equipment and agreed preparation, including moves with building restrictions | Business type, equipment list, building rules and the work schedule to protect |
| Packing and unpacking | Selected-item or full packing, preparation before move day and optional box unpacking | What you will pack and what you want us to prepare |
| Storage and staged delivery | Storage between addresses and an agreed receiving and delivery plan | Expected dates, contents and anything you need to access during storage |
| Designer and hotel furniture receiving | Receiving, storage and delivery of furniture to an agreed plan | Expected shipments, delivery instructions and the final receiving site |
Describe the result you need at each end: furniture placed in the new rooms, a selected group of items packed, a staged delivery or an agreed storage interval. Mark the possessions you will carry yourself and anything staying behind. This keeps the service discussion tied to the real inventory.

Coordinate a business move with the people reopening the space
For an office, shop or other commercial property, identify the person approving the move and the person controlling access at each building. Record the receiving entrance, loading position, security procedure and the rooms where items belong. A downtown shopfront may have a separate delivery door; an office suite may share its lift or corridor with other tenants.
Separate the physical move from technical shutdown and restart. Have your IT provider identify cables, equipment and network dependencies; ask the responsible specialist about any equipment that needs preparation beyond ordinary handling. List files, stock, fixtures and furniture by destination, and agree which group must be available first.
Give the estimator the permitted work window, not only the time the business closes. Arrange a receiver who can check the delivered inventory and authorize placement. If access changes, the decision-maker should be reachable before further handling or waiting is incurred.
IT transport and disconnection are available; arrange reconnection and system startup with your IT team. Crane work is outside our service scope.
We can also quote island moves, recycling, move-out cleaning and car shipping. For an island destination, provide the exact address so the vehicle or freight crossing, receiving arrangements and final delivery can be reviewed together.

Connect the curb, entrance and final room
Measure the narrowest door, usable stair width, landings, turns and low ceilings along the entire route. Include porch steps and the transition through the threshold. Check whether a large item can turn beyond the first door, and photograph any tight corner that affects handling.
At an apartment or commercial building, obtain the manager’s moving window, entrance instructions and lift arrangements. Ask who approves protective materials and insurance documents, and who will open the receiving area. A private driveway is useful only when the owner authorizes the vehicle and the agreed position leaves the route workable.
Send the measurements and large-item dimensions to the estimator before packing. Discuss disassembly or specialist preparation where needed. Public-space permission and the building’s own approval have separate owners; both need to support the same achievable schedule.
We can coordinate building COIs, moving-truck permit arrangements, elevator scheduling and moves that require union labor. Send the building instructions and management contact early. We can also arrange materials and packing before the carrying window when the property permits that access.
The agreed plan should identify who submits each request, who approves it and which City or building charges apply. An application is one step; the required access and time still need confirmation.

Arrange 906 occupancy and any parking removal
The city’s right-of-way permit page expressly includes moving vans and trailers under 906 occupancy. Construction occupancy and storage containers follow a different category. Describe the actual address, vehicle, dates, required length and use of street or sidewalk to the Right-of-Way office at 614-645-7497 before relying on a loading position.
The online application guide gives a review window of three to ten business days. Submission and payment are steps toward a decision; neither is permission to occupy the street. Leave time for review and any approved parking signs, and confirm the authorized dates because the linked duration instructions are not consistent.
For removal of on-street spaces, the city’s parking policy requires advance notice: at least 24 hours in paid-parking areas and 72 hours elsewhere. Confirm the plan, signs, affected spaces and responsible person. Paying a meter or holding a residential parking permit does not create an exclusive moving space.
The full Columbus curb procedure explains the application, charges, posting and unresolved duration wording. If the requested position is unavailable, agree on a lawful alternative and its carrying distance before the crew arrives.

Decide what is packed, by whom and when
Labor, materials and optional work
| Item or task | How it is charged |
|---|---|
| Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly | Part of your moving labor time, without a separate basic assembly fee |
| Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape | No separate charge for these basic protection materials |
| Boxes supplied for your move | Charged separately |
| Packing | Charged for working time; boxes are separate |
| Unwrapping furniture | Part of delivery |
| Unpacking the contents of boxes | Optional work, charged for working time |
| Packaging and waste removal | Charged separately |
| Complex furniture and other specialist work | Individually quoted after review |
Tell us which tasks you want completed and which materials you need. Your estimate should distinguish moving labor, boxes, specialist work and removal charges.
Specialist services by individual quote
| What needs attention | Work available for review |
|---|---|
| Complex furniture | Bunk beds, Murphy beds, large flat-pack wardrobes and specialist sofa disassembly and reassembly |
| Heavy items | Pianos and grand pianos, safes, gym equipment and pool tables |
| Art and collections | Fine-art handling, soft packing, custom crates and crating to an agreed museum or collection specification |
| Hanging and installation | Pictures, mirrors, wall-mounted TVs, curtain hardware and chandeliers, with the removal, installation and any technical work scoped separately |
| Business equipment | Office furniture systems, restaurant refrigerators and ranges, and industrial equipment assessed for the specific item and route |
Send photographs, dimensions, make or model where relevant, and the route through both properties. Describe exactly what needs to be taken apart, moved or installed. We review the method and required work before providing an individual quote.
Identify dense contents, fragile pieces and items that need individual discussion. Books belong in small book cartons; a larger carton is not a useful way to reduce the number of boxes if it becomes too heavy to handle. Keep one clear packing task at a time, and label cartons by destination room and contents.
Set aside identification, closing documents, medicines, chargers and first-night essentials before work begins. Tell the estimator about unpacking or packaging removal you want included, so those tasks can be discussed with the rest of the scope.

Understand what the estimate is planning
Local moves: estimated hours, not a fixed total
Most local moves are priced by working time. Your estimate sets out the hourly basis, any minimum hours and the work and materials to be charged separately. Estimated hours help us plan the crew and whether the work can fit the proposed day; they are not a maximum charge or a promise that the move will finish within that time.
A move estimated at six hours may take eight if traffic delays the truck, an elevator is shared rather than reserved, packing is unfinished or the inventory or plan changes. Tell us about changes early. If the work needs preparation on another day or a separate delivery stage, we will review those arrangements with you. Charging follows the written terms for the move.
Long-distance flat rates: the same scope, the same price
For a long-distance move quoted at a flat rate, the agreed price stays the same when the shipment and agreed work stay the same. Added belongings, omitted items, extra packing or changed access and delivery requirements can change the scope and price. Keep the inventory, packing responsibilities and pickup and delivery conditions in writing, and have additions reviewed before the affected work begins.
Two homes with similar floor areas can require different work. A direct driveway entrance differs from a third-floor walk-up reached from a distant curb. Inventory, stairs, carrying distance, packing, large-piece handling, access restrictions and the delivery plan all matter.
Send the same information for both ends and disclose any additional stop or storage need. Identify fees charged by a municipality or building separately from moving services, including who pays them. Ask how waiting, a changed inventory or a revised destination would affect the agreed scope. Resolve these questions before the move is underway.

Review the scope, dates and protection choices
Dedicated long-distance moving
Our dedicated long-distance service uses a dedicated truck and delivery, with the same moving crew at pickup and drop-off. Confirm the pickup, delivery and any storage stages in your move plan. The survey and move-planning team performs a separate role from the crew carrying out the move.
Use the estimate review to confirm the addresses, inventory, packing responsibilities, access assumptions and people receiving the shipment. Keep written changes with the moving documents. If the home is not ready, contact the mover before loading to discuss an achievable alternative.
For an interstate move, use the FMCSA consumer guidance to understand the documents and questions to ask. Review protection choices and disclose high-value items in advance. The terms of the selected arrangement, rather than an informal description of coverage, govern the shipment.
Choose protection before the move
Discuss the basic liability option and higher protection available at an additional charge before moving day. Have the selected level, cost, limits and claims process recorded in your moving documents. Tell us about artwork and other high-value items in advance so their declared values and any special requirements can be reviewed.
For interstate household-goods moves, Full Value Protection applies unless you select Released Value through the required written waiver. Valuation is the mover’s level of liability; it is different from a separate insurance policy. Review the FMCSA explanation of liability and protection and the terms for your particular move.

Make the property approach usable on the day
Columbus assigns sidewalk maintenance, including snow and ice, to property owners in its Public Service guidance. Establish who will clear the route and steps before the move, and inspect them again before handling begins. Clearing the front walk alone may leave a side entrance or receiving path unusable.
Check current weather, street signs and the building’s latest instructions before committing to the loading sequence. Protect the agreed indoor route from wet footwear and equipment. If conditions prevent usable access, contact the decision-maker while there is still time to choose a confirmed alternative window or storage arrangement.
10 /
Keep access, placement and disposal coordinated
Before handling starts, confirm the approved truck position, available entrance and receiving rooms. Keep the city permit and property instructions accessible. If another vehicle occupies the space or the receiving door is locked, have the responsible contact resolve the next step before carrying begins.
Walk through the inventory and mark what stays. Keep documents, medicines, chargers and first-night essentials with the household. Label cartons by destination room and identify anything needed immediately. Children, pets and visitors should remain outside the work route.
Have someone available who can approve placement and discuss a scope change. Inspect delivered items while they are accessible and retain the moving documents. Arrange unwanted furniture and packaging separately: Columbus’s ordinary bulk service has eligibility conditions, including a move-out clean-out exclusion. Keep the exit and essential rooms usable while unpacking continues.

Prepare the request and a practical fallback
Let the scope determine the survey
A clear item list may be enough for a small, straightforward job. More belongings, full packing, specialist items or restricted access can call for a video review or an in-person visit. Floor area helps describe the property, but the contents and work matter too.
Start by sending what you know. Our move-planning team will recommend the right level of review so the estimate reflects the job. You do not need to choose a survey method or work out every measurement before contacting us.
The survey helps us choose staffing, time and preparation for the actual job. The person reviewing your move is not necessarily part of the moving crew.
Include photographs of both entrances and the largest pieces, the inventory, building instructions and proposed truck positions. Say what is confirmed and what depends on someone else's decision. A requested utility date or permit application is not yet confirmation.
For Plan B, name the trigger, decision time and person authorized to approve a change. Confirm a later access window, lawful alternative loading position or actual storage availability before relying on it. Account for extra handling or waiting, temporary arrangements for people and pets, and the condition needed to resume delivery. Bring these questions into the estimate discussion while the alternatives remain available.

Questions before you move
What should I send for a Columbus moving estimate?
Send both full addresses, the inventory, proposed dates and photographs of doors, stairs and large pieces. Include packing, storage, building rules and proposed truck positions. Distinguish confirmed access from requests awaiting approval.
Can you help with a local or interstate move?
Discuss the origin, destination, inventory and required services during the estimate review. Confirm the actual shipment, delivery arrangement and responsibilities. An interstate move has its own documents and protection choices.
Does paying for parking reserve space for the truck?
No. Parking payment or a residential permit does not establish exclusive use. Ask the Right-of-Way office about the actual moving operation and any 906 occupancy permit, approved signs and parking removal.
How early should I arrange a Columbus moving permit?
The city’s application guide gives three to ten business days for review, and approved parking signs require additional advance posting. Apply early with the exact dates and footprint; confirm the authorized duration and issued permit before relying on the space.
Are basic furniture assembly and packing materials included?
Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly use your moving labor time without a separate basic assembly fee. Moving blankets, shrink wrap and tape have no separate material charge. Boxes are charged separately. Complex furniture and specialist work receive individual quotes.
Can you unpack boxes and remove the packaging?
Furniture is unwrapped as part of delivery. We can also unpack the contents of boxes as optional work charged for time. Packaging and waste removal are charged separately; include the help you want in your request.
What if the home or receiving entrance is not ready?
Name the decision-maker and a time to choose a fallback before loading. Confirm a later receiving window, lawful alternative position or actual storage availability, including the effect of waiting and additional handling.
What needs special attention in an older house?
Measure exterior steps, doors, stair turns and the route into each room. Provide dimensions for large pieces and discuss any disassembly or specialist handling. The age of a house alone does not establish what will fit.
