Moving to Greenwich, Connecticut

Moving to Greenwich, Connecticut means choosing among coastal villages, a busy town center and inland homes with different daily journeys and responsibilities. Compare the address against your work, school and household routine, then arrange the services and access that make arrival workable.

Moving to Greenwich: choose a home and prepare arrival

Greenwich offers several kinds of home search within one town: station-side village streets, the Greenwich Avenue center, western mill-village settings and larger inland properties. Start with the daily routine you need, then compare an actual home’s total cost and responsibilities. A village name cannot settle the school assignment, service account or route to the door.

  • Still choosing a home: compare the eight area contexts and test work, school and shopping journeys.
  • Moving with children: establish the address-based school process and the whole school-day routine before arranging a start date.
  • Address already chosen: begin with household accounts, truck space, building access and the arrival checklist.

Greenwich town boundaries and its different villages

This guide covers Greenwich town in Connecticut, including its inland and coastal communities. It is broader than the smaller Greenwich Census-designated place or the immediate downtown. The housing figures below use town GEOID 0919033620, and the map outlines the town rather than assigning neighborhood boundaries.

The Town’s 2019 plan describes distinct village centers, including Byram, Cos Cob, Glenville, Old Greenwich and Riverside. Use them as starting contexts, not a promise that every street has the same housing or walking conditions. An address near the New York or Stamford edge still needs its own municipality, school and provider checks.

Rail access is concentrated along the southern part of town; an inland property can be a different daily travel choice even when a listing uses the same Greenwich name. The numbered road anchors orient the comparisons. They do not approve a moving-truck route, identify a flood zone or establish an attendance area.

Compare eight Greenwich village and home settings

Compare the routine and responsibilities you want, then test real homes. These eight starting contexts cover village centers, western neighborhoods and inland properties without ranking them or assigning school zones.

Central Greenwich and Greenwich Avenue

Start here for the town-center pattern around Greenwich Avenue and the Greenwich station approach.

Main Library, Byram Shubert and Cos Cob locations ↗
Housing & setting
Compare an apartment, condominium or nearby house against interior space, shared-building obligations and the actual parking arrangement.
Daily travel
Test the walk to the platform and the errands you need, then the return home after an evening train. A central label does not settle the last leg.
Before choosing
The Main Library on West Putnam Avenue supplies an everyday destination. For a move, agree the receiving entrance and lawful truck space with the building and road owner.

Cos Cob

Use the village center and Cos Cob Library as starting anchors for a smaller-center comparison within town.

Main Library, Byram Shubert and Cos Cob locations ↗
Housing & setting
Compare established homes and any apartment or condominium option on their own terms: stairs, storage, noise and maintenance vary by property.
Daily travel
Try the complete trip to Cos Cob station, local shops and the activities you actually use. Check crossings and the return train rather than drawing a radius around the station.
Before choosing
The library is on Sinawoy Road; the Town also lists Bible Street Park and nearby wooded-park options. Ask who controls access and parking at the chosen home.

Riverside

Start with a residential search connected to Riverside station and the East Putnam Avenue corridor.

New Haven Line timetable, effective October 4, 2026 ↗
Housing & setting
Look at the home’s usable layout and outdoor responsibilities, then the actual approach from the street. A neighborhood name does not identify one housing form.
Daily travel
Compare a walk or arranged ride to the station with your shopping and school trips. Test the corridor crossing and the full outward and return journey.
Before choosing
Keep the property’s driveway and carrying route separate from your passenger-car commute. For school choice, use the district’s actual address process.

Old Greenwich

Use Sound Beach Avenue, the station area and Binney Park to compare a village-centered daily routine.

Parks and recreation facilities ↗
Housing & setting
Inspect the home, entrance and storage, then verify any advertised coastal or association access. A nearby shore is not a private amenity included in every address.
Daily travel
Try the station journey and everyday shopping before adding Greenwich Point visits to the routine. Check the specific park-access arrangements for the household and vehicle.
Before choosing
Binney Park provides a walking and recreation anchor; Perrot Memorial Library uses its own borrowing process. Evaluate coastal property conditions at the parcel level.

Compare usable room space around the furniture.

Byram

Begin with the western village setting and Byram Shubert Library on Mead Avenue, close to the New York edge of town.

Main Library, Byram Shubert and Cos Cob locations ↗
Housing & setting
Compare the usable rooms, stairs and parking of each home. Inspect shared entrances and collection arrangements where a property has several households.
Daily travel
Test the actual route to work and shops on both sides of the state edge. A destination across the border may be useful without sharing Greenwich school or service rules.
Before choosing
Confirm the property’s municipality and the moving vehicle’s route. Byram park visits and resident pass requirements belong to their own current facility process.

Glenville

Glenville offers a western inland village comparison with mill-history context and the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center as a practical anchor.

Parks and recreation facilities ↗
Housing & setting
Inspect individual homes for additions, levels, storage and outdoor work. Compare the setting you want with the responsibility and cost you will retain.
Daily travel
Test the whole trip to the station or job, including a drive or dependable arranged ride where needed. A village center does not provide a rail platform at every address.
Before choosing
Use the civic center’s actual program and admission information for activities. Show any tight driveway, gate or stair turn before setting the moving plan.

Pemberwick

Use Pemberwick Park at Pemberwick Road and Moshier Street to orient a western-town residential comparison.

Pemberwick Park and community center ↗
Housing & setting
Inspect the specific house or apartment, shared boundaries and the responsibilities for parking, snow and waste. Avoid treating the whole area as one standard property.
Daily travel
Try the journey to essential shopping and the actual work or school destination. Include the last walk, crossings and the evening return where you will rely on transit.
Before choosing
The park includes a playground, sports areas and the William A. Yantorno Community Center. Confirm any booked activity separately from ordinary park access.

Back-country and inland properties

Begin here when the inland setting, usable space and property grounds matter more than being beside a station. The road anchor is for orientation, not a boundary for this informal area.

Request well and septic property records ↗
Housing & setting
Budget for the actual grounds, driveway, outbuildings and private systems. Obtain well and septic records when those systems apply and agree qualified inspections and maintenance.
Daily travel
A car or reliable arranged ride is the more practical base for a broad inland search. Test groceries, school, appointments and the station transfer as separate journeys.
Before choosing
For move-in, review gate opening, overhead clearance, slope and turning space, then name the person who can open the property and authorize placement. Do not assume a large lot gives a truck a usable route.

Housing costs, building checks and household responsibilities

For an initial historical benchmark, the 2020–2024 ACS five-year estimates report Greenwich town’s median gross rent as $2,674 per month and median owner-occupied home value as $1,695,700. The rent and value tables describe the survey period and carry uncertainty. They are not current asking prices or quotes for a particular village or property.

Build the working budget from the actual lease or purchase terms. Include parking, insurance, association charges where applicable, heating fuel, utilities and maintenance. Gross rent already incorporates applicable tenant-paid utilities; do not add the same component twice when comparing that survey measure. For a house, ask who handles the yard, drainage, snow, private systems and repairs.

Walk the usable rooms, stairs, storage and furniture route rather than relying on floor area. Ask about noise at the times you will be home, deliveries, guests, bicycle storage and home-office connectivity. For waterfront or low-lying property, review the exact address in FEMA mapping and obtain the property’s relevant records and professional advice; a village-wide label is not a parcel assessment.

Turn the housing choice into an address check

Detached village houseCheck the entrance and storage, whole daily journeys and the owner’s maintenance obligations.
Inland or estate propertyInspect the driveway, service systems and outbuildings, then budget for the responsibilities the owner retains.
Coastal homeAssess the specific parcel, access and insurance terms; verify any advertised water or association access.

Daily travel, trains and living without a car

Car-free living is most practical as a focused home search near a village center, useful shops and an achievable station or bus connection. Greenwich, Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich are New Haven Line stations. They are different starting points, not interchangeable promises of service frequency, accessibility or an identical commute. Use the current MTA timetable and TrainTime to choose the actual outward and return trains, including evenings and weekends.

For the wider town, especially inland homes, a car or dependable arranged ride gives much more flexibility. Test groceries, appointments, activities and visits as well as work. Check the last walk from the stop, crossings, lighting, slopes and the load you will carry. A station shown near a listing does not establish a comfortable walk or secure bicycle route.

CTtransit’s Stamford service includes route 311 toward Port Chester and route 312 service to Adams Corner in Greenwich. Use the current stop-specific schedule and alerts for the journey you need. A bus that covers one part of the corridor may leave a long last leg to an inland house, and a weekday departure does not establish a late-night or Sunday return.

If you do not drive, compare a delivery-supported household near essentials with reliable booked rides for trips the train or bus cannot complete. Check availability, cost and any accessibility needs for those rides before making them part of the weekly plan. Car rental only helps a person who is eligible to drive. Keep a workable alternative for a missed connection or cancelled ride, particularly when collecting a child.

If you will drive to a station, establish the applicable commuter parking permit, availability and any waitlist before treating that lot as your daily start. Test the home-to-platform and station-to-destination parts of the journey rather than budgeting only train time.

School assignment, enrollment and the whole school day

Use the Greenwich Public Schools registration page and its School Finder for the actual address and intended school year. Gather the birth, immunization and residency documentation required for your circumstances, complete online registration or arrange the offered registration process, and respond to the registrar. The nearest building or the school named in a listing is not a confirmed assignment.

For a child transferring schools, request the current school’s records and withdrawal or transfer material while the household move is being arranged. Ask the receiving district how to handle an address change, temporary housing, custody documentation or an incomplete residency record. Agree the actual first day and transport with the school; submitting a form alone does not establish attendance or a bus seat.

Greenwich High School has a separate sequence after district residency approval: placement testing and the counselor/course-selection process. Its published planning guidance allows five to ten business days for that sequence. Do not apply that high-school estimate to every elementary or middle-school registration.

Build the day around drop-off, pickup, school transport, after-school care and a workable closure-day alternative. Contact the actual program or licensed childcare provider about admissions, hours, age eligibility and places; school enrollment does not secure childcare. Test the trip at the time the household will use it, including the return from an activity.

07 /

Libraries, parks and everyday errands

Use a first-week loop to test the home: groceries, pharmacy, school or childcare, a library and a place for an ordinary walk. The Main Library on West Putnam Avenue, Cos Cob Library on Sinawoy Road and Byram Shubert Library on Mead Avenue give three different local anchors. Old Greenwich’s Perrot Memorial Library is a separate library; use its own current borrowing information for a card there.

Greenwich Library’s card process asks for identification and evidence of a current address for a resident application. Prepare those documents when the move is complete, especially if the address on your identification has not yet changed. Check the branch and the service you need before making a special trip.

Parks are part of the routine rather than a substitute for service checks. Pemberwick Park combines a playground, sports areas and a community center at Pemberwick Road and Moshier Street. Binney Park is an Old Greenwich walking and recreation anchor; the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center serves Glenville. Use the Town facility page for the particular activity and current arrangements.

For Greenwich Point, Byram and other controlled seasonal facilities, establish the OnePass and park-access option that applies to your household and vehicle. Resident verification, a selected pass option and a ferry ticket are different steps. A park pass does not give unlimited ferry travel; check the intended date and facility before planning a visit.

08 /

Utility accounts, water and private household systems

Make an account list with the owner or manager: service address, physical system, account holder, intended start date and the person who must provide access. The Town identifies Eversource for electricity, Connecticut Natural Gas for gas and Aquarion for public water. The actual home may use a different heating fuel or private water and septic systems.

Arrange the service that actually reaches the property
ServicePractical sequence
ElectricityUse Eversource’s start, stop or transfer process; select the Connecticut service area, enter the complete address and requested date, complete any required steps and retain confirmation. Arrange the old address separately.
Natural gasUse Connecticut Natural Gas’s moving process for an existing gas-served property. Confirm whether the account or an appointment must be arranged; an account request does not add a gas connection to a house.
Aquarion at purchaseCoordinate the closing with the attorney and Aquarion. Its Connecticut sale process asks for advance closing details for a final bill; the stated ten-day timing concerns that closing process, not a universal move-in activation deadline.
Aquarion at a rentalAsk who keeps the account. A qualified single-family tenant may apply under Aquarion’s lease conditions; a shared-meter multi-unit property usually remains the landlord’s account. Resolve the property’s service-line arrangement with the provider.
Well or septicRequest the property’s Environmental Health records and agree inspection, maintenance and any remedial work with the owner and qualified providers. A town name does not identify the system at the house.
Internet and heating deliveriesCheck the full address and equipment, obtain any installation or delivery appointment, and arrange access. Test essential connectivity before relying on a home office.

Use the Eversource, CNG and Aquarion account instructions for the transaction you need. If the date is unconfirmed, contact the provider while the handover can still change and arrange a confirmed place to work or stay if an essential service will be unavailable. Household setup is separate from the moving crew’s furniture placement.

09 /

Trash collection, recycling and unwanted furniture

Greenwich households can take accepted material to Holly Hill or arrange a licensed private collector; do not plan on a universal Town curbside furniture pickup. Ask the landlord or manager which collection arrangement serves the address and where items may be held. For self-haul, obtain the applicable Holly Hill permit and check the current accepted-material and fee instructions before loading.

The Town waste page distinguishes resident access from commercial entry. A hired hauler needs the applicable commercial permission or approved owner-verification arrangement. Confirm that the person you hire can use the intended receiving facility; a resident’s permission is not automatically the hauler’s admission.

As you unpack, separate clean dry cardboard, flatten empty cartons and sort other materials using the Town’s current waste guidance. Ask about mattresses, appliances, electronics and large furniture as separate categories rather than assuming one mixed load is accepted. Keep any booked removal slot, costs and set-out instructions clear of the moving vehicle’s route.

For a paid unwanted-furniture request, send the item list, photographs, carrying access and intended destination to the provider. Confirm what is accepted and what remains at the property. If collection is delayed, retain an authorized holding place or reschedule the handover; do not put an unapproved item at the curb as the fallback.

10 /

Seasonal weather, snow and property access

Before choosing a coastal or low-lying home, search the exact property in FEMA mapping and review the relevant property records and insurance terms. Ask about access, drainage and essential equipment with the owner and qualified advisers. The orientation map on this page supplies no parcel-level flood assessment.

For winter arrival, agree who clears the driveway, steps, entrance and adjacent sidewalk. The Town’s snow guidance puts driveway access and adjoining sidewalk clearing with the property side; a road-plow pass can leave snow at the entrance. Road clearing does not establish that the moving route is ready at the booked time.

Recheck Greenwich Alerts and road closures and the property contact before dispatch when weather changes access. If the planned entrance or lawful truck space is unusable, agree a confirmed later slot or other available stage and who approves its cost. Keep the first-night essentials and any temporary accommodation plan independent of the shipment.

11 /

Moving-truck parking and the route to your address

Start with the actual truck and a private working position if the property permits one. Share gate width, driveway slope, turning space and the entrance route with the mover. Keep ordinary cars clear of the agreed space and name the person who can open the gate at the receiving time.

For use of Town right-of-way, on-street rented space or a container, ask Highway Division about the applicable permit, site plan and traffic-control requirements. Identify the road owner, submit what that owner requires and retain the issued permission and conditions. The Town page’s notification after permit issuance is not a universal application deadline for every household move.

Do not send an ordinary box truck onto the Merritt using a car route. Have the mover review the legal vehicle route, local signs and clearances. A commuter permit, neighbor’s informal agreement or a pending application does not reserve the work area. If it remains unavailable, decide on an approved alternative before dispatch.

12 /

Keys, building access and the whole carrying route

Obtain the actual key or gate handover time, receiving person, building hours and any elevator booking. Send the manager’s COI wording and confirm acceptance, then keep the approval and reservation together. At a house, identify who authorizes use of each entrance and the rooms where furniture can be placed.

Walk the route from the working truck position through every door, stair and landing. Photograph tight turns and show large furniture dimensions before moving day. Agree floor and finish protection and any planned furniture work. Identify belongings that must go into a garage or outbuilding separately; that space must be suitable for the actual items and agreed duration.

For a business premises, add the inventory, permitted loading period and reopening requirements. Name who disconnects, reconnects and tests essential systems. A delivered desk does not make the new premises operational, so confirm a temporary working arrangement where downtime is unacceptable.

If keys, lawful truck space, a usable entrance or an essential household service are still unconfirmed, the planned arrival needs a decision rather than another assumption. Decide before dispatch, or as soon as a change is known, while the mover and property contact can still alter the arrangement.

Name the household decision-maker and the property contact who can authorize access. Choose a confirmed alternative: a later booked slot, an approved alternate entrance, or agreed storage followed by a specific receiving arrangement. Where the home cannot be occupied, book suitable temporary accommodation and keep personal essentials with the household. An unbooked supplier or pending application is not a fallback.

Agree additional handling, storage, redelivery or accommodation charges with the relevant provider and identify who may approve them. Record who will confirm restored access or service, the condition required for work to resume and the revised delivery time. Keep those confirmations and contacts accessible outside the stored shipment.

Questions before you arrive

Which Greenwich does this guide cover?

Greenwich town in Connecticut, including its coastal villages and inland areas. The smaller Greenwich CDP and the immediate downtown are not the whole town. Use the full address for municipality, school and provider checks; the housing figures here use town GEOID 0919033620.

Where should I begin a Greenwich home search?

Begin with Central Greenwich for the Greenwich Avenue and station routine, Cos Cob or Old Greenwich for a village-center search, Riverside for a station-linked residential comparison, Byram for its western village context, Glenville or Pemberwick for western inland settings, or back-country properties when space and the setting take priority. Test an actual home’s rooms, total costs and daily journeys; these are starting contexts, not rankings or school zones.

Can I live in Greenwich without a car?

Yes, with a focused address search near essentials and usable train or bus connections; it is a more restrictive choice than a town-wide home search. Test shopping, appointments, evenings and weekends as well as work. For inland homes, a car or dependable arranged ride offers much more flexibility. If you cannot drive, confirm delivery and booked-ride alternatives and their cost; car rental cannot solve that limitation.

How do I enroll a child after moving?

Use Greenwich Public Schools registration and School Finder for the full address and intended year, prepare the required identity, immunization and residency documents, and complete registration or the offered appointment process. Ask the registrar how transfers or special residency circumstances apply. Agree the first day and transport with the school; a submitted form is not confirmed attendance. High-school students also follow GHS placement and counselor steps after residency approval.

Who starts electricity, gas and water accounts?

The household should agree the account holder with the owner or manager, then use Eversource for electricity and Connecticut Natural Gas for an existing gas-served address. Aquarion’s Connecticut process differs between a purchase and a rental; the attorney coordinates a closing, while landlord, service-line and lease conditions affect a tenant account. Confirm private well or septic responsibilities from the actual property records. Retain service dates and any appointments before relying on the home being ready.

Can I put unwanted furniture at the curb for Town pickup?

Do not assume Town curbside furniture pickup. Arrange an accepted Holly Hill self-haul or a licensed private collector under the current rules for the actual items. Confirm resident or commercial admission, the accepted category, any fees and the holding or collection arrangement. A missed collection needs an authorized holding place or revised date, not an unapproved curb pile.

Does a parking permit reserve space for the moving truck?

No. Resident or commuter parking permission does not reserve a moving-truck work area. Review an approved private position with the property and mover first. If the plan uses Town right-of-way or rented on-street space, obtain the applicable Highway Division instructions and permission, identifying the actual road owner. Keep the issued location and working conditions with the move plan.

What should happen if closing or access is delayed?

Decide with the property and mover before dispatch, or as soon as the change is known. The authorized household contact should choose a confirmed later slot, approved alternative entrance or agreed storage and later delivery, with charges and receiving arrangements recorded. Keep personal essentials outside storage and book accommodation if the home cannot be occupied. Name who confirms the condition for resuming work and the revised delivery time.
